Virgil van Dijk’s first full season in a Liverpool shirt has much potential from a Fantasy perspective.

The club-record £75m signing from Southampton made an instant impact on Merseyside, helping the Liverpool defence to seven clean sheets in his 14 league appearances for the Reds.

Priced at £6.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season, van Dijk and left-back Andrew Robertson are the joint-most expensive defensive assets in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Liverpool welcome West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Southampton to Anfield in the first six Gameweeks and their defenders are proving to be popular FPL purchases: all five members of the perceived first-choice backline, including Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) and goalkeeper Alisson (£5.5m), have double-digit ownership.

The past two seasons have been something of a frustration, both for van Dijk personally and for his mostly untapped Fantasy potential.

Van Dijk’s debut Premier League campaign in 2015/16 still represents his personal FPL benchmark, with the-then Southampton centre-half registering three goals, ten clean sheets, 16 bonus points and 130 FPL points overall as the Saints finished sixth under Ronald Koeman.

A serious ankle injury suffered in January 2017 cut short his sophomore season with the Saints before a transfer window tussle for his services between Southampton and Liverpool hampered his pre-season preparations for the campaign just gone. Having handed in a transfer request in August of last year, van Dijk was to start just 11 league matches for the Saints before further speculation led to his omission from Mauricio Pellegrino’s team in mid-December.

The move to Anfield has firmly placed van Dijk back onto the FPL radar, though, and the Dutch international’s form in the final four months of 2017/18 hints at greater things to come: no Premier League defender kept more clean sheets than van Dijk (seven) after his Liverpool debut in Gameweek 24.

Van Dijk’s Initial Impact at Liverpool

Despite an inglorious first league appearance in a Liverpool shirt (a 1-0 away defeat to Swansea City), van Dijk’s positive effect on the Reds’ backline was palpable.

Before the Dutchman’s arrival, Liverpool had conceded goals at a rate of 1.21 per match (the sixth-best average in the league) and allowed a mean of 1.56 big chances per fixture (seventh-best). Six other Premier League sides had registered more clean sheets than Liverpool (nine) prior to van Dijk’s capture, meanwhile.

From Gameweeks 24 to 38, the Reds conceded an average of 0.66 goals per fixture (the joint-best mean in the top flight) and only allowed their opposition an average of 1.2 big chances (joint-second best) per match. The Reds’ total of eight clean sheets – only one of which van Dijk wasn’t present for – over this period was also a division-high.

Liverpool’s defence in general improved in 2017/18 and their record at Anfield was notably impressive, with only ten goals conceded and 12 clean sheets registered (out of a total of 17) across the whole of the season.

Goal Threat

Van Dijk is surely due a goal or two this season. In 2017/18, the only defender to have more attempts on goal than the Dutch centre-back (27) without scoring was Brighton’s Shane Duffy. Twenty of van Dijk’s efforts were from set plays, highlighting his particular strength at dead-ball situations.

Van Dijk’s minutes-per-chance mean of 83.4 was also the best in the Premier League among centre-backs with more than 20 league appearances to their name.

From van Dijk’s Liverpool debut onwards, the only centre-half to have more efforts on goal (16) than the former Celtic defender was Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

The Netherlands international was on target in the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund this week and intriguingly took a direct free-kick in the 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Alisson’s Arrival

The acquisition of Brazil number one Alisson from Roma surely adds to van Dijk’s clean sheet potential. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper had a better save percentage (79.3%) last season than all other Premier League goalkeepers bar David de Gea; Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet’s save percentages, by contrast, were down at 68.9% and 61.0% respectively.

De Gea and Nick Pope were the only Premier League goalkeepers with a better “expected goals (xG) prevented” total than Alisson, who saved a net total of eight shots that he was expected to concede.

De Gea was also the only goalkeeper in the English top flight who bettered Alisson’s clean sheet total of 18 for Roma.

A Lack of Rotation Threat

For Liverpool to make a serious tilt at the Premier League title this season, then the only top-class centre-back on their books is surely a must-start in the vast majority of their domestic matches.

From Gameweek 26 until the end of the 2017/18 season, van Dijk started every single one of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures. This unbroken sequence of appearances came in spite of the Reds’ progress to the final of the UEFA Champions League and Klopp’s predilection for rotating other key members of his side, including Robertson and Alexander-Arnold (both of whom failed to start three of those 13 matches).

That van Dijk – unlike Alexander-Arnold and Lovren – has had the summer off from international duty also bodes well for his chances of a sustained run in the first team right from Gameweek 1.

I don't think Mkhi is in Arsenal's first-choice XI (although will undoubtedly get minutes) and I'm not convinced Roy wants to play Zaha as a no.9 even if he does stay. Don't know if that's relevant to you. Good luck.

Maybe the wrong forum for it but an interesting question nonetheless...
What will happen to Victor Moses this season? If rumours are to be believed, Sarri is planning on playing 4 at the back for Chelsea (surely reducing Alonso's appeal, but let's not get into that right now). With Christensen, Rudiger, David Luiz, Cahill at CB, and Chelsea supposedly in the market for Rugani as well, it would seem that Azpilicueta will be moving back to RB. With Zappacosta providing cover there, do we think that Moses will be pushed further up the field again, competing with Willian/Hazard/Pedro for a spot on the wing? If so he may become quite an attractive prospect.

I'm a big fan of his, and thought he impressed at the world cup, and so would like to see him given the chance. From a Fantasy perspective a 6.0 defender playing as a winger for Chelsea could be fun as well...

Moses fits Sarri's winger role much better than Pedro - he's quick and direct in a similar way to Callejon at RW last season for Napoli. Pedro has had three poor seasons at Chelsea, and is a shadow of the player he was at Barca.

    First draft - watcha think?

    Ederson
    TAA, Cedric, Tomkins
    Salah, Eriksen, Mane, Richarlison
    Aguero, Arnie, Zaha

    Speroni, Jags, AWB, Stephens
    Bank 0.0m

Austin in for Zaha would give me 1m to beef up the defence (Jags -> Bellerin), and I quite like the double switch in GW3 of Eriksen/Arnie -> Mkhi/Laca for the good ARS fixtures.

    Cheers and good luck all!

Guardiola said last season that Mendy and Sané won't play on the left together. So if Mendy plays, Sané will be on the right or on the bench.

      https://www.thenational.ae/sport/football/pep-guardiola-mendy-absence-to-blame-for-not-pairing-jesus-and-aguero-together-1.677394

"“When you have Mendy, he can play wide and the winger can go inside,” he said. “Delph cannot do that. Without Mendy, [winger Leroy] Sane has to go wide, which is why they don’t play together."

So I guess we have to wait and see if Mendy is as nailed as people suggest and if Pep will find new role for Sane it would feel like such shame to waste young Germans potential.

That makes more sense, I must have remembered wrong.

It still could be true that Mendy takes Sané's minutes; they never started together when both were fit.

I was wrong again, they started the match in which Mendy was injured after 29 minutes. So Pep is definitely willing to start both, and I'm an idiot.

I think he was referring to the 3-5-2 he was using at the time. If he sticks with 4-3-3, seems improbable that he'd rule out Mendy and Sane dominating the left flank on general principle.

Sané definitely benefitted from the 4-3-3. He immediately became nailed on after the switch: https://mobile.twitter.com/FPL_Connect/status/923097370627362816?s=09

This is a gamble for anyone investing in expensive City assets. Pep's line-ups are notoriously fluid and he rotates so much. You simply can't apply the logic of other managers and clubs to City.

For myself, I'm starting with both but expecting to switch Sane to KdB as soon as the latter is ready.

The ‘why they don’t play together’ was referring to Jesus and Aguero as pointed out below .... but the mids will rotate, Jesus and Kun may rotate, Jesus and Sane may rotate ...

Safest bet is KdB, or get 2 other City mids and just accept rotation

How many teams are represented in your current drafts?

I've got 7 at the moment.

    City, fairly obviously
    Liverpool, see above
United, decent start and defence always decent
    Everton, good fixtures
    Southampton, decent fixtures,
    West Ham, Arnie
    Watford/ Wolves for Budget Midfielder.

    Leaving out:
Arsenal, wait and see for me, looking to bring in on wildcard
    Chelsea, see above
Spurs, see above, wait for players back from world cup
    Burnley, Europa rotation

Promoted sides, bit too punty can easily jump on them

Most other lower table teams have poor fixtures to start the season
Brighton, Newcastle etclook to get them in at a later date.

Which teams are you representing at the moment?

Not many. Triple City, triple Pool and double Arsenal don't leave much variety, esp when the fillers include double Wolves and double Cardiff! I'm an all-or-nothing- kinda guy. Coverage smotherage.

Yeah I'm almost definitely going triple city or pool. I'm obviously not including my terrible bench warmers in my team analysis though was just interested to see which teams people are mainly focusing on. 🙂

I have been studying the goalkeepers I have looked at obvious clean sheets, but number of saves and bonus point are also very interesting.

    Top 8 clean sheets 2017/18
    De Gea 18, Ederson 16, Courtois 15, Lloris 15, Cech 15, pope 11, Ryan 10, Pickford 10

Top 8 number of saves, 1 pt per 3 saves
    Fabianski 137, Ryan 124, Pickford 121, De Gea 115, pope 113, begovic 111, lossl 103, Foster 99
(Only De Gea is listed from top 6)

    Top 8 bonus received
    Pope 19, Schmeichel 17, Pickford 16, Fabianski 14, Ryan 13, Henessey 11, Lossl 11, Foster 11
    (No top 6 listed)

    Top 5 penalty saves 3/2
Fabianski 3, Ryan, Lossl, Schmeichel, Ederson 2

I can certain see why the top 5 keeper are their price due to the number of clean sheets, but there is so much value beyond an expensive keeper.

If Pickford does end up at Chelsea his bonus points will be limited as well as number of saves but clean sheets are more likely, at 5.0m its a bargain.

Pope (currently Injured), Lossl, Pickford, Fabianski, Ryan are quite evident in the lists above as top performers so maybe these are the keepers to consider and spend the extra money wisely elsewhere.

van Dijk is definitely more nailed.

But with Robertson you'd fancy him to get either 0 mins or 90, so as long as you have a sub you'll be fine.

Robertson's continual attacking threat makes him more attractive for me. Although I think van Dijk is well capable of scoring a few.

Keita and sessegon might not be worth the money but decent punts, time will tell. Maybe move Keita to gross to see how Keita settles and where he plays. Gross is low risk as high goal involvement and Brighton have improved their squad

Interesting move opting for Gomez, do you think he's more likely to start than Klavan or another CB. My personal opinion of your team is your midfield is slightly weak with too many punts (sessegnon, Keira & Kenedy). Loving the front 3, but the risk of Firmino not playing is too much for me. And slightly put off by Auba for Arsenal's opening fixtures.

I 100% agree but I’m going to wait a week or two to see what the situation with City is , don’t want to have Mahrez for two games then have to ship him when Sterling is back, same with Sane. Only one I’d be confident owning long term is De Bruyne and since he possibly isn’t starting the season he isn’t in the draft. Why who are your city attackers of choice?

Personally I think this is a well balanced team for the first 3 gameweeks without too much change. 3 Everton my only worry especially double defence. Think I would out pickford for another goalie to spread risk.
I have Vvd, Robbo, pva , richarlison, auba, Arnie, salah and Mahrez as well but with Coleman instead of Baines. Good luck for the season. I never ever start well but hopefully this year.

    Thinking im happy with this

    Ederson (Boruc)
Robbo - PVA - Coleman (Yedlin, Peltier)
    Salah - Eriksen - Rambo - Cairney/Costa (rotate)
    Aguero - Zaha - Tosun

Yedlin can cover PVA in GW2 and Coleman GW6. Only thing I'm considering is Arnie but still not sold on his fixtures.

    Any mistakes/advice?

Arnie is a good option, I'd take him over Zaha and Tosun to be honest. After a trip to Anfield his fixtures are actually quite good. Travelling to a new look arsenal and Everton and 2 juicy home fixtures. I think he's going to do very well this year.

    Changed my team AGAIN.

Based on Chelsea signing a 5.0 GK (Pickford or Schmeichel), and Willian remaining in the PL at either Chelsea/Man Utd.

Planning on 4-3-3 with this side.

    Chelsea GK (4.0 fodder)
    Mendy Robertson Shaw Coleman Tomkins
    Salah Mahrez Willian (Cairney, Stephens)
    Aguero Arnie Zaha

Rotation shouldn't be too much of an issue as Cairney (who I like a lot), a defender (or Stephens with his 2-3 pts each week) will come in.

Possibly Auba/Laca in for Aguero in GW3. If Laca, it'll allow me to upgrade Shaw if he's set to lose his place to the returning Young.
