Virgil van Dijk’s first full season in a Liverpool shirt has much potential from a Fantasy perspective.

The club-record £75m signing from Southampton made an instant impact on Merseyside, helping the Liverpool defence to seven clean sheets in his 14 league appearances for the Reds.

Priced at £6.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season, van Dijk and left-back Andrew Robertson are the joint-most expensive defensive assets in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Liverpool welcome West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Southampton to Anfield in the first six Gameweeks and their defenders are proving to be popular FPL purchases: all five members of the perceived first-choice backline, including Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) and goalkeeper Alisson (£5.5m), have double-digit ownership.

The past two seasons have been something of a frustration, both for van Dijk personally and for his mostly untapped Fantasy potential.

Van Dijk’s debut Premier League campaign in 2015/16 still represents his personal FPL benchmark, with the-then Southampton centre-half registering three goals, ten clean sheets, 16 bonus points and 130 FPL points overall as the Saints finished sixth under Ronald Koeman.

A serious ankle injury suffered in January 2017 cut short his sophomore season with the Saints before a transfer window tussle for his services between Southampton and Liverpool hampered his pre-season preparations for the campaign just gone. Having handed in a transfer request in August of last year, van Dijk was to start just 11 league matches for the Saints before further speculation led to his omission from Mauricio Pellegrino’s team in mid-December.

The move to Anfield has firmly placed van Dijk back onto the FPL radar, though, and the Dutch international’s form in the final four months of 2017/18 hints at greater things to come: no Premier League defender kept more clean sheets than van Dijk (seven) after his Liverpool debut in Gameweek 24.

Van Dijk’s Initial Impact at Liverpool

Despite an inglorious first league appearance in a Liverpool shirt (a 1-0 away defeat to Swansea City), van Dijk’s positive effect on the Reds’ backline was palpable.

Before the Dutchman’s arrival, Liverpool had conceded goals at a rate of 1.21 per match (the sixth-best average in the league) and allowed a mean of 1.56 big chances per fixture (seventh-best). Six other Premier League sides had registered more clean sheets than Liverpool (nine) prior to van Dijk’s capture, meanwhile.

From Gameweeks 24 to 38, the Reds conceded an average of 0.66 goals per fixture (the joint-best mean in the top flight) and only allowed their opposition an average of 1.2 big chances (joint-second best) per match. The Reds’ total of eight clean sheets – only one of which van Dijk wasn’t present for – over this period was also a division-high.

Liverpool’s defence in general improved in 2017/18 and their record at Anfield was notably impressive, with only ten goals conceded and 12 clean sheets registered (out of a total of 17) across the whole of the season.

Goal Threat

Van Dijk is surely due a goal or two this season. In 2017/18, the only defender to have more attempts on goal than the Dutch centre-back (27) without scoring was Brighton’s Shane Duffy. Twenty of van Dijk’s efforts were from set plays, highlighting his particular strength at dead-ball situations.

Van Dijk’s minutes-per-chance mean of 83.4 was also the best in the Premier League among centre-backs with more than 20 league appearances to their name.

From van Dijk’s Liverpool debut onwards, the only centre-half to have more efforts on goal (16) than the former Celtic defender was Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

The Netherlands international was on target in the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund this week and intriguingly took a direct free-kick in the 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Alisson’s Arrival

The acquisition of Brazil number one Alisson from Roma surely adds to van Dijk’s clean sheet potential. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper had a better save percentage (79.3%) last season than all other Premier League goalkeepers bar David de Gea; Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet’s save percentages, by contrast, were down at 68.9% and 61.0% respectively.

De Gea and Nick Pope were the only Premier League goalkeepers with a better “expected goals (xG) prevented” total than Alisson, who saved a net total of eight shots that he was expected to concede.

De Gea was also the only goalkeeper in the English top flight who bettered Alisson’s clean sheet total of 18 for Roma.

A Lack of Rotation Threat

For Liverpool to make a serious tilt at the Premier League title this season, then the only top-class centre-back on their books is surely a must-start in the vast majority of their domestic matches.

From Gameweek 26 until the end of the 2017/18 season, van Dijk started every single one of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures. This unbroken sequence of appearances came in spite of the Reds’ progress to the final of the UEFA Champions League and Klopp’s predilection for rotating other key members of his side, including Robertson and Alexander-Arnold (both of whom failed to start three of those 13 matches).

That van Dijk – unlike Alexander-Arnold and Lovren – has had the summer off from international duty also bodes well for his chances of a sustained run in the first team right from Gameweek 1.

When he's fit then Kompany, but he can't stay fit. So then it must be Otamendi, from an FPL perspective at least. Maybe Mendy is better but we have yet to see.

    RMT!

    Ederson (Speroni)
Robertson Shaw Van Aanholt (Kolasinac, Bennett)
    Salah Sane Miki Richarlison Mata
    Aguero Zaha (Kamara)

    - 2 strong Captain picks (Salah/Aguero)
    - Arsenal cover with Miki (wouldn't like to have 2 Arsenal attacking at this stage, especially with early fixtures). Aguero can easily be switched out for Auba though.
    - Prefer Ederson as best way into City defence at the moment
    - Can't look past attacking threat from Van Aanholt (especially as he now has a fantasy team and extra incentive to perform!! Downgrading to Tomkins is tempting though.
    - Would like Arnie over Zaha but fixtures putting me off (even though he tends to perform against big teams).
    - Everton cover with Richarlison (great fixtures, prefer him to Tosun currently). Would like to see how Richarlison performs in pre-season before deciding to stick though.
    - Mata to have a lot of gametime in early fixtures, can be swapped out for Mili or Ramsey, or possibly a cheaper player to free up funds for a double FT week.

    Cheers!

Looks strong overall. Personally wouldn't go for Kolasinac given uncertainty at LB and the fact I don't fancy them to get a CS in the first two Gameweeks.

Shaw and Mata is probably too much of a risk for me unless you're committing to an early wildcard. Probably transfers waiting to happen come GW3. Think it's best to limit yourself to one punt on players benefitting from World Cup absentees.

With City assets you just have to pick one and accept the fact that they will be rotated occasionally.

Many are choosing to start with Mahrez as he seems nailed for the start of the season with many players returning late from the World Cup.

I’d say two games. Mahrez can also be played centrally though in the D.Silva role so he’s my City pick at the moment.

Not sure to be honest, but Everton weren’t a good defensive unit last year, aren’t looking good in pre-season and have an attack minded manager.

I know on paper the fixtures look kind, but it’s not screaming out get an Everton defender to me just yet.

I was going to suggest Tomkins, but agree that two Palace defs is too many.

Is anyone going to gamble on Mohamed Elyounoussi early on? There is usually one unknown who starts on fire, see Richarlison last year.

    He comes with goalscoring pedigree

50 odd league goals in 130 or so appearances over the last 5 seasons.

I think the rule of thumb is having spending evenly and at incremental price points.

Guess the idea behind that is that you can then react with a one for one transfer if a player goes on fire.

    Afternoon peeps

Here's some tips. Read them, ignore them (as I do every season :D); up to you.

    - Decent, nailed on 4.5m GK + a cheapie 4m who may have a chance of starting. Do not rotate keepers; they often score more away from home in a tough fixture due to save points. I guarantee a 4.5m GK will score within 20 points of De Gea by season end.

    - We've just had a World Cup. Check team news to see if your picks have been partaking in preseason friendlies! You might want to start the season with a few backup options and wildcard once the regulars are all back and available. Lamela, Moura maybe even Llorente should get the chance to impress at bargain prices.

    - WE'VE JUST HAD A WORLD CUP! Some players didn't go. There may be a shrewd pick or two on those which have had a full pre-season with their club team. Italy (Zappacosta, Emerson, Gabbiadini, Ogbonna, Schelotto(£4m)); Holland (Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Locadia, Ake, Hoedt, PvA, Janmaat); Chile (Sanchez), Cameroon (Matip - if not injured), and the usual home countries 😉 (Ramsey, Robertson), will all be pushing for starts.

    - Squad balance. Attackers score more than defenders (duh) but premium defenders score more than budget mids. It's unlikely that your GW1 team will have all the TotS players, so pick a tiered squad where you can easily swap in or out a player of similar value.

    example 343
    4.5m - 4m
    5.5m - 5m - 4.5m - 4.5m - 4m
    13m - 9.5m - 7.5m - 6.5m - 4.5m
    11m - 9.5m - 7m

example 352 - fantastic mid-priced midfielders this season.
    4.5m - 4m
    6m - 5.5m - 4.5m - 4.5m - 4m
    13m - 9.5m - 9m - 6.5m - 6.5m
    11m - 7m - 4.5m

    - Be wary of teams with new managers (Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, West Ham). Formation changes (Alonso no longer a wingback), new signings (Richarlison) and a fresh evaluation of squad players can ruin the best laid FPL plans. Give it a few weeks to let these teams settle and for the bargains to emerge.

One question, what is the logic of spending less on defence in a 4-3-3?

Basically more funds from not spending 7m on a third striker. You could have the same defence in both a 343 and 352 and spend the extra upgrading the second striker from 7m (Arnie) to 9.5m (Firmino), but would have to compromise on the midfield a little.

I sound simple? You guys are arguing that this is logical and I am the simple one?

Yes, A SINGLE 4.5 keeper will score within 20pts of David De Gea. However, as acknowledged within the same post you will not own the Team Of The Season, and so this will not be the 4.5 keeper you pick.

                  Bollocks

We have just had a world cup. Agreed. Llorentte still wont start as Son is available GW1. Lamela and Moura are still weak picks. In all cases there is a reason they are fringe players for their clubs so "punting" on them is exactly that, a punt and thus doomed to fail.

                  Bollocks

We have just had a world cup, I already agreed to this. Yes some players didnt go, and are enjoying a better preseason for it. What is the relevance? A good pick is a good pick regardless. Van Dijk and Robertson are decent picks anyway.

                  Bollocks

Azpi outscored all but three attackers last season. In fact if you look at a lot of the premium defenders they outscored quite a lot of strikers last season.

                  Bollocks

Tiering your squad has balance, but at the end of the day, you will still wreck your squad to get in the must have player, or indeed to switch to 4-3-3 once you realise you bollocked up on not having decent defenders who outscore strikers. The 4-3-3 example is also 100.5M

                  Bollocks

New managers make teams harder to predict. However, as for being wary of new managers you could also see this as an opportunity to get ahead as someone is pedalling the idea that new managers should be avoided so you can get a good start by backing the right one if you want.

                  Bollocks.

Regardless of how it turns out, it needs to be assessed from a theoretical standpoint. You can't judge it on the basis of a tiny sample of highly variable data.

I've spent too much time arguing against structure on this site to do it again right now, but it won't be proven right or wrong by whether the winner of FPL next season likes or dislikes it.

In fact, all the things here depend on too many unpredictable thing to draw conclusions in hindsight about which was the right decision. The right decisions are right rigardless of if they end up having the best results in hindsight.

I think Ginkapo has been a bit harsh, but I think it's likely a reaction to the hulking of one man's opinions (which he disagrees with), and the frustration that comes with seeing (what many believe to be) myths, not only persist, but be actively supported and proliferated by the site.

If it were a bit more focussed on one of the points, and supporting why/how the theory is grounded in logic, data or experience, then it could be a much more useful HT imo

                      Appreciate the effort nonetheless. 🙂

'Do not rotate keepers; they often score more away from home in a tough fixture due to save points.'

Isn't this a reason to rotate?

'premium defenders score more than budget mids'

This is not mutually exclusive. 2 cheapie rotating defenders can match a non rotating premium Defender leaving you up on points as a budget midfielder will outscore the cheapie midfielder.

What he’s saying about cheap keepers is that their hauls come at unexpected times.

For example, you would have benched Fabianski last season for his away game at Man City when he saved a pen and made multiple saves if you were doing a 4.5 rotation

I like that split of funds a lot. There's nothing worse than looking at your first sub and thinking meh. With a 4.5m def as your first sub, there's still a decent chance of points given a good fixture.

I agree with you on the keepers and premium defenders but there's no right or wrong obviously, each to their own.
I expect the new managers to give their teams a boost but I m certainly wary of certain assets such as Alonso, Siggy, CHE mids due to this.

sadly so. I'm on Stekelenberg at the minute. The key point being don't spend 9.5m on keepers. The points ceiling for a keeper is lower than outfield players. If you can nail a rotation system that works then fantastic but there's always surprises.

Don't see why this was hulk-worthy tbh.

About the goalkeeper, the only 4.5m GK that came within 20 points of DDG last season was Fabianski. So I don't how you're making any guarantees. And it's irrelevant anyway because this isn't FPL Draft. In FPL, we maximize our points throughout the season using transfers. Assuming we don't use any transfers on GKs, we can have a GK until our first WC, a different one until our second WC, and then a third one for the rest of the season. So all that matters is which GK we like for the near future, not season tallies.

      your 1st example 343

      Comes to 100.5 million

So your def would be made of 2 x 4.0 defenders and having to find a 4.5 to start every weak

quite a weak defense with 3 potential non nailed on defenders

He missed a sitter and wanted a goal. Got the approval from Salah.

United apparently had bid accepted for Wliian.
Anyone else feel that United's current wingers are better than him, Sanchez Martial Rashford Lingard Mata.
I don't get what Mourinho sees in Willian?

No one really understands much of what Mourinho does nowadays anymore. With that amount of attacking talent people should be talking about United in fantasy terms the same way City is talked about

He's going to kick out young Martial in favour of old Willian. Mou's losing it - avoid United assets!

Rashford, Lingard and Mata are dog shite.

Thanks Andy I don't do template never have never will it doesn't work for me,Fabri is Fulham's newest GK signed from Beskitas for £5mill I presume he will be the number 1 ahead of Bettinelli now and is a bargain at 4.5 in my eyes

Oh right. I'm going for a 4.5/4 goalkeeping combo - currently on Fabianski, considering Patricio, but will add him to my watchlist.

I'm anti-boring-template too. Death or Glory for me!

Patricio might be a good pick can see Wolves doing very well this year and keeping a few CS's not sure what to suggest for the £4.0 keeper your after as there is not much choice. I like your style we will all be chopping and changing our teams anyway through the season being template doesn't always score you high people need to grasp that.

    Removed Zaha from my team.

Obviously doesn't want to play for Palace anymore. No point if his heart and head isn't in it.

PVA may have to go as well. Not as effective without Wilfred.

Zaha came out and clarified his Instagram post afterwards ... something all the papers conveniently don't follow up on in their stories ... By all means, sell Zaha and PvA 😉

      Zaha is staying at CPFC.
