There were contrasting fortunes for Manchester United and Liverpool in their pre-season meeting this weekend.

While Jurgen Klopp’s side once again looked like a team worth trusting with Fantasy Premier League investment, the reasons to avoid Manchester United continue to grow.

We’ve taken a look at the big clash for Scout Notes…

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool

  • Goals: Andreas Pereira | Sadio Mané (£9.5m), Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m), Sheyi Ojo, Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m)
  • Assists: None | Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Shaqiri, Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), Ben Woodburn

Manchester United’s defensive woes worsened over the weekend as they were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool in Michigan. Chris Smalling (£6.0m) pulled up in the warm-up and was forced out of the game, while Luke Shaw (£5.0m) sat out the match too. That meant that Eric Bailly (£5.5m) had to play in the meeting while carrying an injury himself, and Jose Mourinho also revealed that Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) would miss the start of the season.

“Smalling? I’ve no idea (about a return). Shaw? I’ve no idea. Matic had a surgery. Yes, of course (he is out for the start of the season). I don’t know (about a return). He came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest in the holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.”

Such a slew of injuries could seriously damage United’s clean sheet prospects for the beginning of the season with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) potentially out for a month, Diogo Dalot (£5.5m) not available until September and Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) and Matteo Darmian (£5.0m) destined for exits. There hasn’t been too much interest in the Red Devil’s defenders thus far, Bailly the most popular with just 5.8 percent backing. However, David De Gea (£6.0m) has become the most fashionable shot stopper and he could be set for some sales in the coming days. Since Friday, the Spaniard has already lost 0.4 percent ownership, with Ederson (£5.5m) or Alisson Becker (£5.5m) potential alternatives to the United man.

Man United were equally poor at the opposite end of the field, mustering just three shots on goal. One of those was Andreas Pereira’s impressive first-half free-kick but forward players Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.5m) were starved of service playing in front of a second-string midfield. Anthony Martial (£7.5m) was not involved again and it looks as if the problems are mounting for Mourinho, which may put Fantasy managers off owning United assets.

“Antonio Valencia comes from holiday – I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he was back, then injury and also go back. Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here. So we have Alexis (Sanchez) and (Juan) Mata who play every minute of every match and now we have Real Madrid and after that Bayern Munich and that’s our start.”

On the other hand, Liverpool demonstrated their credentials for Gameweek 1 investment with another strong performance. Of particular note was Sadio Mané dispatching his second penalty-kick of pre-season, despite the fact that Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) had won it. Also on the pitch at the time was James Milner (5.5m), long-time taker, and Fabinho (£6.0m) whose history suggested he could be in the conversation. The fact that they did not step up for this one does imply that the Senegalese forward could be set to take spot kicks in the league this season. Salah’s penalty record at Liverpool is scored one, missed one, while Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) has missed two from three he has taken.

Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m) put on another good display which could see him force his way into the starting line-up earlier than expected, especially with Firmino still absent. The Swiss international played in an advanced role against Manchester United providing an assist and scoring a spectacular bicycle kick in the second-half. Also pushing for first-team involvement is Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m) whose substitute appearance in this match provided his fourth goal of pre-season – no Liverpool player has more so far.

The battle between Joe Gomez (£5.0m) and Ragnar Klavan (£4.5m) to start at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Gameweek 1 was not furthered by this particular match. Gomez started Liverpool’s previous encounter with Klavan replacing him at half-time, this time around it was the Estonian who got the nod from the beginning. He played 45 minutes before Nathaniel Phillips came on for him while Gomez replaced van Dijk in the 65th minute. We will definitely need to follow this situation more throughout the summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-1-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Fosu-Mensah, Bailly, Tuanzebe (Gomes 81’); Mitchell (Fred 71’), McTominay, A Pereira, Herrera (Bohui 81’), Darmian; Mata (Chong 71’), Sánchez (Williams 81’).

LIVERPOOL XI (4-3-3): Grabara (Kelleher 45’); Moreno (Robertson 65’), Klavan (Phillips 45’), van Dijk (Gomez 65’), Camacho (Chrivella 65’); Lallana (Woodburn 45’), Fabinho (Jones 65’), Milner (Grujic 65’); Mané (Ojo 45’), Solanke (Sturridge 65’), Salah (Shaqiri 45’).

Maurizio Sarri confident Alvaro Morata has Chelsea future

    9.0 anyone?

He was the worst player I owned last season, so not unless I see some form first.

        Likewise.

Could be very good value if he hits the form he's capable of though.

        Big If.

Still not confident he will stay, there was a meeting in Nice yesterday where Chelsea proposed Morata + 55m swap for Higuain + Rugani.

Yeah, if Higuain arrives Morata will be irrelevant. Get him on Thurs evening when the tran window closes.

If he's Sarri's man, Sarri plays him. I wouldn't be getting him myself.

I think he’d be a bad signing to be honest, very overrated player

At 9.0 that is a good deal, I’d get him if he’s starting to be honest. But Lacazette also is very interesting, and Firmino. And Arnie. And Zaha. And Tosun. And King. And Austin. And even Vardy. And Aguero. And Auba. Not Kane though 🙂

Too many strikers all of a sudden, I think it’ll be more important than ever this year not to get sucked into Hokey cokey’ing between them trying to chase last weeks points

For me the cheap second striker spot is a trap for flexibility.

A few reminders as we approach the beginning of the new season:

    1. Make sure you have a grav! (The picture beside your screen name.) It's a good way to help you get replies for your comments as it helps other users recognize you and your posts.

From the FAQ at the bottom of the page:
Head on over to http://www.gravatar.com and register for an account (make sure you register with the same email as the one you are registered with here). Choose an image, and this will be associated with all of your comments on site. Your gravatar image should appear next to your comments within roughly 24 hours.

    2. Posting your team is fine in moderation but don't spam it. You shouldn't post your team multiple times within an hour, for example.

    3. Try to respond to other users' RMTs. Not only is it a good way to understand things you could do for your team, it's the only way the system works. If everyone responds to 10 RMTs for every 1 they post, the feedback user's get will be more useful and the pages won't be so cluttered. Responding also helps build goodwill.

We will have RMT Community Articles coming soon - please post your RMTs in those articles! The mods will be notified and will spend time responding. Again in those Community Articles, users should try to respond more than they post

RMT etiquette is always appreciated. I'll try and comment on a couple if I'm posting one of my own. The only justification for a repeat post within an hour is if you somehow manage to get the last post on a page and don't get any comments on it.

Geoff just a head up for the pre-season tab. Fulham played two friendlies the other day - the 0-0 with Fiorentina, but also we won 3-1 vs Athletic Bilbao.

      Kebano goal, Seri assist
      Kamara goal,
      O.g., Sessegnon assist

I think it would be useful to add a feature whereby we can aquire goodwill through some kind of measurement system - granted by community members for example. It would also help users evaluate better whether the advice can be trusted.

Would also be appreciate if people could tailor their advice to the poster and the team/strategy.

It's no good listing the players you have in your team in an attempt to bash them into a template. Try to put yourselves in a position where you're open to the idea that the RMTer actually values the players in their team, and suggest a few player/strategical changes that you think could give them an edge over their current team.

You're also welcome to ask questions bout the team rather than assume the RMT has put no thought into it (even if this is the case). It's nice be generous with your assumptions about the poster rather than to take a condescending, elitist stance.

Great stuff, I remember it got a bit heated in here with some RMTs last season. They can get very irritating, especially when posted as names with no real question other than RMT pls. If we are going to do so, we surely require more information on why a particular set of players have been selected. RMTs must have more behind the thought process than these are 15 players I could pick for my 100 mil budget, what do you guys think? In this way, the discussion adds value to the community and doesn't drain its energy with relentless, meaningless RMTs.

Because Debuchy left in January. The gulf in quality between Bellerín and Lichtsteiner is massive. Monreal is finished as evident by his performances at the end of last season and Kolašinac is rubbish when he’s not playing as a wing-back. Bellerín will get 30+ league games.

If you look at the statistics he’s always rotated his full backs even when one was a much better option than the other- he rotated Tremoulinas at Sevilla

Assuming that Liverpool will score a ton of goals this year. And keita looking like her will play further forward, with either; Milner, Fabinho and Henderson playing deeper. Can only assume that he is real value at 7.5

I’ve got him in my team and I’m absolutely buzzing

If you captain Salah every game, is there sense in not owning Kane, Aguero or Auba given the high price reflects captaincy option and going cheaper upfront? Just wondering if captain Salah and a spread of budget is something to consider?

13 outfield starters (hopefully) so flexible, but 3-4-3 probably mostly.

                      Currently on:

                      Ederson 4.0
                      TAA Cedric 4.5 4.0 4.0
                      Salah Mane Jota Neves Cairney
                      Kane Aguero Wilson

But this depends on there being two likely 4.0 starters. Wilson may well also become Andone whch will give me 1.0 to use elsewhere.

                        • 12 Years

I don't think I'd be happy with two 4.0m defenders.
As you say, Wilson downgrade could help with this, Sorloth looks good in pre-season, if he nails down a place it could help.

I'm struggling to make Kane and Salah work, especially with a decent 2nd striker in a 4-4-2.

I'm coming around to Mane instead of Salah as he seems to have been made penalty taker now.

I'd certainly be tempted, yes. I guess this is the crux of my thought - is a choice of having him as big hitter captain and extra points worth the lesser strength in other positions? Quite possibly but the other way makes for some really balanced looking teams

Oh I think I'm there, just tinkered my team into what is definitely my favourite draft yet. And there's 0.5 in the bank for emergencies 😎

      Very very minor emergencies!

Won't be to everyone's taste, but I've fit in all the players I like finally.

        Patricio
Robertson - Van Dijk - Otamendi
        Salah - Sane - Jota - Maddison - Richarlison
        Aguero - Zaha

        4.0 - AWB - Peltier - Kamara

Nah gonna go with my gut and keep Maddy. If I drop anyone its Richarlison, possibly for Pedro or Arnie

yeah, Zaha vs Arnie and Pedro vs Jota/Richarlison are tough calls.

  22. Eze Really?

Is spending 5.5 on the likes of Gundogen worth it?
I know he will only play half the games, maybe more due to his versatility.
He could sit in the side and when he does not play, a decent bencher to take his place.

Depends on the rest of your squad. Could be worth a punt but not for me.

        Cairney would be bench cover.

Also depends if you wanted to go triple City and he's taking up a spot that you could otherwise fill with a more attacking mid...

Fernandinho might rest first few GW's so very likely taht Gundogan gets few games at the beginning of the season. KDB, Mahrez, Sterling also out. So small change that he gets advanced position though D.Silva most likely playing behind strikers.

    Gtg for now???

    Bettinelli
    Otamendi Robertson PVA
    Salah(c) Sane Ramsay Richarlison
    Lacazette Arnautovic Zaha

    Fabianski Cedric Ward WanBissaka

possibly but keep an eye on Pep's comments RE Sane's fitness. I've put Eriksen there as placeholder for now.

Also double Arsenal might be more advisable from GW3 onwards, but that's a tough thing to achieve with your setup as Ramsey is the best option at 7.5.

Arnie is gonna be in basically everyone's team isn't he? Scoring like a maniac in pre-season + two very good home games in the first four.

I'd even back him vs Liverpool / Arsenal.

Unlucky not to score at Anfield last year (hit the bar + had another good effort saved), and then he actually did score at the Emirates.

Bonus of being 7.0 & therefore able to become any of Wilson / King / Tosun / Zaha / Gayle / Perez if any of those lads show form.

Can't decide between him and Tosun just because of Everton's nice fixture run

Going with Richarlison as the route to Everton attack. Think he can match or outscore Cenk.

Not for me - your view on fixtures can be spun the other way easily with some opposite cherry-picking.

How am I cherry picking? Acknowledged 2 good games + 2 bad ones in first four, but he's shown he can do it in the toughies...

    RMT please

    3-5-2
    Foster
    Robbo Tomkins Cedric
    Salah Ozil Richarlison Pedro Jota
    Aguero Zaha

    Fabianski Arnie Ward Pereira
    0.0 ITB

My main concern is how to get a premium 6.0/6.5 city defender for their nice run
Maybe downgrade Jota, play Arnie and upgrade Cedric to Mendy?

downgrade Jota/Rich/Pedro to Cairney and suddenly you're in business.

Ozil is a very intriguing punt! You’ll have to monitor Pedro...can’t seem him playing week in week out.

Cedric may not start as he hadn’t returned to pre-season so possibly look at Hoedt for example.

Play Arnie 100% and I’d keep Jota over Pedro imo unless otherwise

Downgrade either 5th mid or 3rd forward. Too much money on the bench.

Not bad at all, although personally I think 2 x 7m up front makes it hard for you to get any of the big hitters if needed but that's just personal preference

How important are Good BPS players for you?

I remember having Mane last year and he would score, get a clean sheet point and would always be matched by Firmino who would get an assist only then a bunch of bonus.
