Marko Arnautovic was on the scoresheet for the fourth match in a row as he continued as the spearhead in the West Ham attack, while Diogo Jota demonstrated his eye for goal with a strike in Wolves’ 2-1 defeat at Derby County.

Christian Eriksen was given another start in Tottenham Hotspur’s encounter with Barcelona in Los Angeles, while Southampton kept their first clean sheet of pre-season in a 2-0 win over Dijon.

Newcastle United produced a backs-to-the-wall performance to draw 0-0 with Porto, meanwhile.

Our latest instalment of Scout Notes rounds up the goals, assists, team news, injuries and tactical talking points from the five remaining pre-season friendlies contested over the weekend.

Ipswich Town 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Felipe Anderson (£7.0m), Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m), Sead Haksabanovic

It’s five goals in four pre-season friendlies for Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m), who already features in over a quarter of Fantasy Premier League squads despite his positional reclassification.

Unlike Wilfried Zaha, another midfield star of 2017/18 who has been listed as an FPL forward for the coming season, Arnautovic has featured as an out-and-out striker in all of his appearances over the summer and led the line again at Portman Road over the weekend.

Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI looked near to full-strength, with Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko (both £7.0m) flanking Arnautovic in attack and Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) once again playing in the central midfield trio.

Anderson opened his West Ham account after just three minutes of the match in Suffolk, the Brazilian bundling home a teasing Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m) cross.

Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena (both £4.5m) looked shaky at the heart of the West Ham defence and were dissected far too easily for Ellis Harrison’s equaliser.

The two centre-backs were bystanders again shortly afterwards when an unmarked Harrison headed against the post.

Arnautovic’s winner was all of his own making, the Austrian collecting a Sead Haksabanovic pass in midfield and surging through the Ipswich defence to prod the ball past home goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) made his debut for the Hammers between the sticks.

Declan Rice (£4.5m), listed as a defender in FPL, once again impressed in central midfield after replacing the mediocre Pedro Obiang (£4.5m) in the second half and is an “out of position” asset to monitor in the Hammers’ two remaining pre-season friendlies – albeit not one who would likely offer much by the way of attacking threat.

Yarmolenko was switched to a “number 10” role after the introduction of Robert Snodgrass at half-time.

WEST HAM UNITED (4-3-3): Fabianski; Fredericks, Ogbonna, Balbuena (Diop 71′), Masuaku (Zabaleta 71′); Obiang (Rice 71′), Kouyate (Snodgrass 46′), Wilshere (Noble 46′); Yarmolenko (Martinez 60′), Anderson (Haksabanovic 60′), Arnautovic (Cullen 81′)

Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Barcelona (3-5 penalties)

  • Goals: Son Heung-min (£8.5m), Georges Kevin-N’Koudou
  • Assists: Christian Eriksen (£9.5m), Anthony Georgiou

Mauricio Pochettino assuaged fears of an injury crisis in his midfield after the International Champions Cup match with Barcelona at the weekend.

Already without Dele Alli (£9.0m), Eric Dier (£5.0m) and Mousa Dembele (£5.0m) after their participation in the World Cup, Pochettino was devoid of the services of Erik Lamela (£6.5m) and Victor Wanyama (£5.0m) for Sunday’s match in Los Angeles and lost Moussa Sissoko (£5.0m) to a hamstring injury midway through the first half.

Speaking of Sissoko’s early withdrawal, Pochettino told the club’s own media channel:

Yes, I think it’s minor. Maybe he was a little bit tired, but I think it’s not a big issue. We will wait… the next few days to see what happened.

Erik (Lamela) was, after the game against Roma, a minor muscle injury, that’s why he’s here with us and we hope he can play against AC Milan.

Victor (Wanyama) has gone back with Tashan (Oakley-Boothe) to London to see the doctor. I think it was the same problem as last season in his knee. We will assess him in the next few days and see what happens.

Sissoko had originally lined up in central midfield with youngster Luke Amos, with Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) starting in front of the pair in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1.

The withdrawal of Sissoko on 35 minutes forced winger Lucas Moura (£7.0m) inside, with substitute Georges Kevin-N’Koudou being stationed on the flank. The versatile Moura was to play as Spurs’ central striker in the second half after the exit of Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) at half-time.

Ben Davies (£6.0m) started his second successive match at centre-back and, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen (both £6.0m) also yet to return from their post-Russia break, there is a strong chance the Welshman could line up at centre-half in the Gameweek 1 encounter with Newcastle United. Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m), at least, returned as a substitute in this match after his World Cup exertions.

With Davies’ FPL appeal rooted in his ability to couple an attacking threat with clean sheet returns (no defender created more chances than Davies last season), his deployment at centre-back would perhaps strengthen the case of right-back Serge Aurier (£6.0m) as an early-season route into the Spurs backline.

Eriksen went close with two free-kicks – striking the woodwork with one of them – as Spurs fought back from 2-0 down to take the match to penalties. Both of the Lilywhites’ goals came from blocked shots as Son Heung-min (£8.5m) and N’Koudou followed up efforts from Eriksen and youngster Anthony Georgiou.

Georgiou missed the decisive kick in the penalty shoot-out as Barcelona ran out 5-3 winners.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga (Vorm 62′); Aurier, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Walker-Peters (Sanchez 46′); Amos, Sissoko (N’Koudou 35′); Son, Eriksen, Moura (Georgiou 62′); Llorente (Skipp 46′)

Derby County 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goal: Diogo Jota (£6.5m)
  • Assist: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) ended Wolves’ three-match run without a goal but couldn’t help his team to a first win in five, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat at Pride Park.

The match saw Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) make his Wolves debut alongside Ruben Neves (£5.0m) in central midfield and the new arrival seems set to share set-piece duties with his fellow Portugal international on the basis of what we saw at Derby over the weekend.

Barry Douglas was, of course, a prominent figure at dead-ball situations last season but his shock departure for Leeds United in midweek has had a ripple effect elsewhere in the squad; his replacement, versatile debutant Jonny, is no stranger to playing in Douglas’s position but is predominantly right-footed and doesn’t offer that same teasing delivery from the left flank in open play.

Moutinho’s deployment in the centre of midfield saw Romain Saiss (£4.5m) drop back to centre-half, where he has featured on umpteen occasions for Morocco.

Jota’s strike, sandwiched by goals for Derby’s David Nugent and Mason Mount, came after Neves had struck the bar with a trademark long-range shot. Neves – who had 90 attempts on goal from outside the box last season – had earlier whistled an effort from distance just past the post.

Leo Bonatini (£5.0m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) both got 45 minutes as the spearhead of the Wolves attack, with Jota and Helder Costa (£5.0m) stationed either side.

Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) was Wolves’ only notable absentee this weekend and was said to have missed out with a knock – although speculation remains rife of a possible move away from Molineux for the Portuguese winger.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (3-4-3): Patricio (Norris 61′); Saiss (Bennett 61’), Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 45′), Jonny (Giles, 61′); Costa, Bonatini (Jimenez 45′), Jota (Enobakhare 73′)

Dijon 0-2 Southampton

  • Goals: Shane Long (£5.0m), Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m), Charlie Austin (£6.0m)

Angus Gunn (£4.5m) has been promised further pitch-time by manager Mark Hughes after the young goalkeeper made his Saints debut in the 2-0 win over Dijon FCO at the weekend.

Speaking to the club’s website after their week-long training camp in France came to an end, Hughes said:

He’s (Gunn) going to get more minutes in the next two games as well. I think that’s important. He’ll experience St Mary’s, and that will be a box ticked for him.

Southampton entertain Celta Vigo and Borussia Moenchengladbach this week in their final two pre-season fixtures, with Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) seemingly still in pole position to start 2018/19 as the Saints’ number one – although Fantasy eyes will be on the respective minutes the two goalkeepers are given in the two forthcoming matches at St Mary’s.

Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida (both £4.5m) are yet to feature in pre-season following their World Cup exploits, although budget defender Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) did return to the Saints’ side after his own participation in Russia with Poland.

Sam McQueen, another £4.0m-rated defensive asset, began on the right flank in Cedric’s absence.

Having featured at centre-back in Southampton’s previous three July friendlies, Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) returned to a more familiar left wing-back role and set up Shane Long (£5.0m) for the Saints’ opener.

Long was replaced by Charlie Austin (£6.0m) at the break and the former Queens Park Rangers striker collected a fortuitous assist for Southampton’s second after his sliced volley fell into the path of Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m), who prodded home from close range.

That Hughes seems keen on fielding two recognised forwards in this 3-5-2 set-up would seemingly bode well for Austin’s chances of a Gamweek 1 start, but it was the Saints’ first-half strike partnership that the Welshman reserved his praise for:

I thought it was important to get Shane back involved. He’s missed a little bit through injury, so it was good that he came back in. I thought Shane and Gabbi in the first half were really bright in their work and caused them a number of problems.

Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) began the match as the furthermost forward central midfielder, with Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) trialled in “the hole” in the second half.

SOUTHAMPTON (3-5-2): McCarthy (Gunn 46′); Hoedt, Vestergaard, Bednarek (Stephens 46′); Bertrand (Targett 75′), Romeu (Ward-Prowse 66′), Hojbjerg (Davis 46′), Armstrong (Elyounoussi 46′), McQueen (Reed 66′); Long (Austin 46′), Gabbiadini (Redmond 66′)

Porto 0-0 Newcastle

Florian Lejeune‘s (£4.5m) season could be over before it has even begun. The severity of the French centre-half’s knee injury was confirmed by manager Rafael Benitez after the 0-0 draw with Porto at the weekend:

The reality is we have lost Lejeune – he has a cruciate ligament injury, so we will lose him for a while. He will need an operation, and he will need some time. We needed a centre-back before [Lejeune’s injury] and still we need maybe another one. It’s bad news about Lejeune but to see Fabian Schar doing well is important; he will give us this extra option we didn’t have.

Schar (£4.5m) could be the main beneficiary of Lejeune’s prolonged absence, having joined the Magpies from Deportivo La Coruna last week. The Swiss defender made his debut as a 62nd-minute substitute for Ciaran Clark (£4.5m), who will also have designs on that second centre-back spot alongside Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m).

Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) produced a heroic display between the sticks as the Newcastle goal led a charmed life, with Porto hitting the woodwork on two occasions.

Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) could be set for the exit at St James’ Park, meanwhile. Joselu (£5.0m) started his third successive friendly as the Magpies’ lone striker, with Gayle once again being completely overlooked – as he had been at Hull City last weekend – by Benitez.

United are only awaiting a work permit before a deal to bring Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto to the club can be finalised, while speculation is rife that West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon is bound for the north-east in a cash-plus-player swap with Gayle.

Paul Dummett (£4.5m) made his first start of pre-season in what was something approaching Benitez’s first-choice side, although Kenedy (£5.0m) was missing once again after the birth of his child.

NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1): Dubravka (Darlow 72′); Yedlin (Sterry 62′), Clark (Schar 62′), Lascelles, Dummett (Manquillo 46′); Diame (Hayden 72′), Shelvey (Ki 62′); Ritchie (Roberts 72′), Perez (Longstaff 72′), Murphy (Atsu 72′); Joselu (Armstrong 72′)

We're still a week and a half away from the start of the season and there are too many variables around FPL teams at the moment for me to even consider starting my team. So I'm going all Christmas humbug instead and I'll ask you to let me know the things people say on FFs that get your goat! Here are my top 4:

    - "Nailed": Think of the metaphor - someone has taken a metaphorical nail and pinned him to the team with the diligence of a skilled lepidopterist.

A player isn't "more nailed than y" or "75% nailed", is either "nailed" or he isn't.. Anything less and he can only be considered a more or less likely starter.

    - "Essential": very few players are ever essential, and all top players are eventually priced to a point where your reasons for picking them depends on how you balance and shape the rest of your team - how strong you want your bench to be, whether you have alternative captain picks etc. Salah last year was arguably the only "essential" player we have had in the last few seasons.

    - "He's due": A player who has not scored in nine games is not all the more likely to score in the tenth unless there has been a major shift in personnel, formation or tactics. He is much less likely to score than the player whose form is...

    - "unsustainable": "He's scored in nine games, the odds of a player scoring in ten games in a row are tiny so he's almost certain to blank". This is, of course, complete nonsense.

    Come on, what are yours?!

XD how's your planning going, D? Enjoyed the Arsenal write-up. Anyone essential? Depends on how nailed they are I suppose.

Apparently Ozil is as nailed as the come. So my plan to cover Arsenal with Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Nelson is flawed since I don't have enough eggs in the starting XI basket.

Personally it's for people who view wildcarding as a instant way to get green arrows. It's as the term suggests, a 'wildcard': anything could happen I think it's perfect to plan for it based on fixtures and form, but to expect that a wildcard is a instant remedy to your team is not the right mentality. Patience is key!

Not as much as you might think.
          Example:
Assume the given probabilities of scoring as accurate.
If a player has a 50% probability of scoring in a game, and he scored in 8/10 - people might assume he is 80% likely to score instead od 50% ==> unsustainable form
Alternatively if a player has a 50% probability of scoring in a game, and he scored in 2/10 - people might assume he is 20% likely to score instead od 50% ==> due (to score more)
It's impossible to perfectly quantify how likely a player is to score, but thats why we use underlying statistics (xG, shot, etc) where we can see if someone is overperforming (alternatively on unsustainable form) or underperformong (alternatively due).

Though it is faulty to assume a player who is "due" will overperform.and average out over a small period (as is a a couple of games)

        This I agree with partially.
Coverage can be fully applied for defense (all the defenders get 4 pts for a CS)
Negatively, you only get a limited numver of BPS added epr game - ie you are more likely to get BPS if you pick the right players from different teams (so they don't "steal" each others BAPS)

But still it is a very weak arguement

Yeah aiming for coverage is marginally better than doubling up for two reasons - BAPs, as you say, and also the fact that you might have a player score, but if it's 1-0 with 5 minutes left, the fact that player A scored means that player B is less likely to score - he may be subbed or the team may go more defensive. If player B played in a different match with different aims and outcomes then he might get more points. Avoiding doubles for the sake of it is nuts though!

Yeah, this is a valid point too - but it also depends highly on the team. There are teams willing to put 8 goals past their opponents 😀

@RedArrows, but with this logic, if you owned player B only, he would be more likely to score that if you owned both Player B and Player A?

The Baps thing i disagree with too. The probability of the players getting baps are the same whether you own one or both. As is the outcome.

This is similar thinking to avoiding players who play against each other in one week. If you play the odds across the whole season, you will get more points than if you bench a good player for the sake of avoiding the clash. That said, this scenario is mitigated by the fact you can avoid poor fixtures with transfers. If the clash is actually a good fixture for both players, then there's no good reason I can see to reduce your overall likelihood of good points in order to go for bust or glory by benching one of them. (In fact this reminds me of captaining players with "high ceilings" despite low points per match).

I guess my argument could be better formulated than I managed above! so:

Each manager has an obligation to try to win games (even José, apparently), regardless of what this does to fantasy assets.

A proportion of wins are tight, and if you have two players on the same team then if the manager shuts up shop then all attacking players suffer. One/both/neither of the players could have delivered attacking points by the time that this happens, but in the case of a 1-0 situation it is likely to be one/neither.

If the second player is playing in a completely different match, then there is an entirely separate incentive for the manager of that match to go for the win, regardless of what happens in the first game which is, to the manager in question, laregly irrelevant to their own in-game situation, as both games reach 80 minutes, player A might be being subbed, whereas player B might be getting more support, more crosses, pushed higher up the pitch etc.

This is my reasoning anyway. I understand that this can be reversed in a way - if the first match provides 6 goals then there is a good chance that two players from this team will do very well, and you might as an FPL manager end up cursing the fact that you didn't have two irons in the fire. For me, it's just that 1-0s are just so much more common than 6-xs, and FPL is generally about catching the steady drip of points rather than the cascades!

I think I'd argue that even though player B retains the same probabilities for points scored, the probability of (A+B) having a higher score will be higher if A and B are from different teams (simply because you exclude the event in which player A and player B get 3 BPS)
ie there is a mutually exclusive event of both players scoring 3 BAPs if the players are on the same team.

This is all given that both "B" players are most likely to score the same points.

The same arguement can be said for a clash, even though the individual probabilities stay the same the probability of a higher score for both players will *change* due to the mutally exclusive events (ie attacker A scoring and defender B getting a CS).

Completely agree - in a vacuum, I'd say that there would be a slightly higher points combo from A+C (different teams) than A+B (same teams) for BAPs alone, let alone my thoughts on managers going defensive at the end of tight games.

All things are rarely equal in FPL though, so there are often other very good reasons for wanting to avoid a double-up (or to commit to one). The main one being that the best players available at the different price points are likely to be spread across the league.

Here's my reply to your arguemt above RA

The probability of your individual player being the one to score the goal in a 1-0 game is the same if you own another player in that game. Just by owning a player from a different game, it doesn't increase your chances of getting a goal.

I can see (what I would call) the psychological block, here. It seems like having players from separate games which are going to be 1-0, means that you have 2 players fighting for 2 goals instead of 2 players fighting for 1 goal. So if we exclude the possibility of a result higher than 1-0, and look at the overall the collective probability one of your two players scoring a goal, both scenarios give you the same chance of 1 goal, but the scenario with "2 baskets" gives you a higher chance of scoring 2 goals (because 2 goals is impossible a 1-0 game).

However, this rationale relies on either a cap at 1-0 or on intervention from one of the players scoring (and simulaneously lowering the chances of a second goal).

The latter isn't a problem because the intervention is an intervention. It happens during the game, which is after you have made your decision. Pre-game, you can just pick the players with the highest chance of FPL points, regardless of the team.

The former isn't a problem because there is no cap at 1-0. First, the likihood of teams in general scoring more than 1 goal or more than 2 etc is fairly irrelevant in my book, because, again, you are already taking into account the probability of a player scoring points when you pick him (which includes the possibility of a team scoring more than one goal).

Second, however, if you do buy into the "1 goal is most likely scored by a team" I have done some calculations, and it appears that one goal is indeed the most likely amount of goals that a team scores in a PL match. However, PL teams score 2+ goals in 40% of their matches. If you pick players from better clubs (getting a bit to close to "coverage" here).... Okay.... If your player belongs to a top club, I would presume they score 2+ goals much more frequently than 40% of the games. "Tottenham Hotspur’s most frequent result is a 4-0 win, which has happened on four occasions", for example. https://talksport.com/football/219493/every-premier-league-teams-most-frequent-scoreline-revealed-170414235298/

Here are the caluclations I made. The probability of a team scoring this number of goals in a game in the PL:

                      0 = 28.2%
                      1 = 31.6%
                      2 = 15.5%
                      3 = 8.7%
                      4+ = 15.95%

I did these using this link https://www.windrawwin.com/statistics/full-time-scores/ It's not impossible that I made mistakes 🙂

Just to add to that final point:

The average goals that a team score in a match last season was 1.32, but the top 6 look like this:

                        City = 2.79
                        Pool = 2.21
                        Spurs = 1.95
                        Arsenal 1.95
                        United = 1.79
                        Chelsea = 1.68

I personally think is irrelevant to double ups, but for you it might suggest that doubling up on top teams is more viable than lower teams 🙂

If you're into pedantry, I don't think you should be saying that there are many reasons to avoid a double up and then qualify it by saying that your team is just unlikely to end up having a double up due to pricing structures. One is an active decision; the other is a byproduct.

I think I understand what you are getting at mate, and what you say makes a lot of sense.

I can't escape the fact that it's all rather academic because I don't really think there is enough of a difference between (A+B) and (A+C) for it really to make much of a difference to the way I pick a team, actually!

I wrote to say why I think A+C is slightly better but actually that makes me look like I'm a coverage over doubling supporter, which is actually not true. Both are endorsed or derided unfairly, and I think there is every reason to double up rather than "cover" especially when, as you say, some teams averaged 2+ goals every game last season!

aren't you arguing that if you have 2 players in a single game or 2 players spread across 2 games, that you have the same chance of the same numer of goals, and by inference points ? or have I missed the point ?

"The probability of your individual player being the one to score the goal in a 1-0 game is the same if you own another player in that game. Just by owning a player from a different game, it doesn't increase your chances of getting a goal."

      "unsustainable" is valid for:
      1) huge conversion rated (ie shot 3 times and scored 2)
      2) huge points/min (came off the bench twice to assist and score, played 30min)
      and so on..
      "due" can be valid if:
      - said player has a lot of shots on target, high xG, just unlucky in a few games (ie VVD had quite a few proper attempts on target)
      "essential":
once upon a time Kane, Mahrez and Vardy were essential
      "nailed":
it can be a loose nail, you dont get to define the metaphor - but the contextual meaning stands for "likeliness to be in the starting XI"

Good points - disagree re "nailed": because of what the word means it can only have entered FPL parlance for the times when people wanted to say that a certain player is one of the first on a teamsheet. It has been watered down to such an extent that it is meaningless.

"Due" suggests that a player isn't scoring, but should be. So it excludes players who are scoring and should be, like Joe's goals imminent table. Which is nice if you want to paint a narrative of the unfortunate souls who aren't getting the luck, but not so nice when you're trying to make FPL decisions, because you've categorised the players who don't need to be categorised ([are already scoring] vs [are not already scoring])

Actually, I dislike Joe's goals imminent table as IIRC it only counts players who are not scoring, so it's a bit 'gambler's fallacy'. Inlcude all the players who are scoring on there for a balanced picture.

Right this is exactly what I'm trying to say 🙂

@LosBlancos. The last sentence was just trying to reinforce what I already said.

If you value the xG, for example, then you will want to look at xG of all players. Perhaps you could remove the players who aren't nailed from your decision. But the goals imminent table removes players who are already scoring.

The word "due" is like the goals imminent table. If "due" = good, then it is also good that a player isn't scoring. It seems to suggest a player who isn't scoring is better than one who is. In reality, I would say that whether a player is scoring in recent games is completely irrelevant to their xG.

              Ah I see - I skimread it because, y'know, tldr :p

Yes I love Joe's work but this one is really flawed. The players who are actually scoring are a much better indicator of who will score than those who got "unlucky". What if the "unlucky" player always misses because he puts his shots on target in the middle of the goal just to be safe and they always get saved? The stats don't really help with these real-life scenarios.

That can be included if they ponderize (ponderise?) the shots on goal.
IE a shot to the corner is valued higher than a shot to the middle of the goal.

But realistically if they are top players playing in a top league you'd expect them not to shoot "safe"? :p

The level of shooting in football in general often astounds me. I get genuinely baffled when I see players shoot at the middle of the goal from close range, long range, or whatever. I must be misunderstanding something about the pressure of the situation or the perspective from the camera (making the pitch look smaller than it is etc) etc. But you see some players know what they are doing and but the ball where the keeper isn't, so why do so many players struggle with this? *shrugs*

              Right, got you now.

I think the table is made that way because its the players who are playing well and dont score that go under the radar, whilst you always check on the goalscorers. I think you can easily set up an xG ranking in the members section.

Due is conditionally good I guess.
if a player is not scoring its good if he's due 🙂

So you think that xG isn't a good indicator then?

"structure" and "balance" do have valid points too - means you need less FT to swap around players you "really" need. Likely thing is though, that you wouldnt want to lose the player who is at that price point.
" eggs in one basket " and " risk management" refer to cover basically.

And Salah is worth his price, I think he does better than last season tbh.. wouldn't you say that would be essential as a C pick?

"feel ok with not having X as I already have Y who covers his points" . - the concept of offensive coverage is ridiculous. It sort of exists in defence as clean sheets go to the whole team so barring an unlikely goal, BPS and cards you can assume defenders who start a game for the same team will usually score the roughly the same. Salah scoring doesn't help me just because i have him "covered" with Firmino.

People suggesting someone isn't a good pick because of a new manager. It doesn't really make a difference if they are still playing in the same position and haven't had their roles changed. Suggesting the likes of Auba and Laca won't perform in the league because of a new manager is a bit ridiculous, seeing they're smashing pre season, in form, and playing in positions that they have played in most of their career. They will have been getting used to the new manager and his philosophies for the past few weeks.

I kind of agree. A player doesn't cover another player's points. I think coverage of teams is important though. So you want at least one attacking player from man city for example. I know de bruyne sterling may get more points, but I currently have Silva to cover city spot if they are free scoring as before.

"Nailed" for me means "will start 100/100 games", so 80% nailed is shorthand for "will start 80/100 games". I don't have a problem with it really. I have more of a problem with people claiming players are nailed when they are not likely to start 38/38 games that they are available. Plays like Salah are rotation risks, even if they're only rested once every 8-10 games.

          Salah isn't nailed. Really? 😆
Think he starteded every game barring injury? Maybe was rested once ehen they had two games on consecutivr days or something - but even Kane would be rested for that

Have you never shoddily nailed something to the wall? Less nailed implies its more likely to fall down, i.e no longer be nailed. It makes sense both figuratively and literally.

Oh, I thought of another one. Peak pedantry INCOMING:

Triple captain doesn't triple the captaincy. It multiplies it by 1.5.

So it should be called 1.5x captain or triple baseline

      XD

I agree the term isn't perfect. You could read it as triple [points] captain, and [double points] captain to make sense of it, where the square brackets indicate information that at some point in time has been deemed redundant. I think the fact they were invented at different times and by different people has resulted in inconsistent naming logic! In the words of philosopher, C. Pilkington, "Get rid of it".

"If player A scores X, you will be X points behind from the start"

This comment drives me up the wall. It applies to every single player every single gameweek. Its a non-argument. But people seem to think that when applied to highly owned players, its suddenly qualitatively more important advice.

In fairness I have to say I disagree with this one - or at least, the only player i’ve seen this comment applied to is Salah - and it is (a) blantantly true with Salah that if he scores a brace in GW1 & you dont’t have him you will be 25-30 points behind those who do I.e. most of the game, probably 3 or 4 million players, and (b) used as a stark wake up call/illustration to give perspective to those considering going without.

It doesn’t apply to Kun, Auba or anyone else because none of them will have Salah’s 60-70 % ownership, therefore you will not be behind 3 or 4 million players, you might be behind a few hundred thousand, and none of them will have Salah’s close to 100% captaincy, therefore it’s not 25-30 points, it might be 5-10 points which is easily made up by other sub 11.0 players.

What the comment doesn’t mean is that you have to pick Salah. What it also doesn’t mean is that it’s impossible to do well without Salah. That’s like saying it’s impossible to win the lottery, which it is not.

What the comment does do is highlight that it’s highly likely you should pick Salah, and highly likely you can’t do well without Salah.

Ted captains Salah and gets 2x15=30
Tod captains Aguero and gets 2x8=16

Then theres the other 10 players...

Tod now is much more likely to be 14 points behind Ted, and even if Tod got lucky with his other players, Tod is now also scrambling to try to find a way to get Salah in and has to make an extra FT. Tod feels like a very silly billy.

I find it irritating when people use the arguments:
"I've just got a feeling he's going to explode"
      or
"I think he's got a point to prove"
      and, to a lesser extent,
"It's easier to get rid of him than have to get him in."

Every time I ask someone why they've picked Sanchez, I seem to get a combination of these responses.

Wow, what a high-quality discussion that was, further up the thread.

Late to the party I know, but my tup'pence-worth is that whilst I'm in the anti-"coverage" camp, some of the discussion did challenge me. Having thought it through, I feel that while the 'coverage' argument can make a marginal difference in the short-term and relate to some players and teams, I don't think it's valid for the high-scoring teams. I'm committed to tripling up on Liverpool and City, but I'd never go for 3 United attackers while Mou is holding the reigns.

Do you mean coverage as in:

            A) Covering specific teams (e.g. more Liverpool & City = more points)
            B) Covering lots of teams (fewer from one team = risk spread = more points)

For me, "coverage" is a useless term because it can be used to rationalise both.

I think too many people are expecting Arnie to score a goal a game.

perhaps in the easier fixtures. Neither balbuena or Diop are flawless especially Diop looks donkey. But pellegrini loves to dominate the weaker team pushing his full backs way up and Fredericks will excel at that as we’ve seen this pre season

He makes great runs and creates space for his team mates. He did very well for us last season although his shooting and often his crossing let him down. I wish him the best but I'm not convinced he'll cut it in the prem since he can't defend and can be rather hot headed

Depends on Mourinho. If its anything like last season, Sanchez could end up feeding on scraps and looking nothing like the Arsenal player he was.

    1. SW6

Unless they're really awful I don't consider fixtures at all for attackers.
For my GW1 team I wouldn't look beyond GW5 fixtures for defenders and budget players.

    2. banskt
      • 12 Years

I generally look 6-8 weeks for all budget defenders (< 5.5m), budget midfielders (

6 weeks on the whole but for this season im reducing that down to three.

    4. Zarafa
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

In general I would care less about fixtures as players get more expensive.

As you can't transfer your players that frequently when there are fixture swings, it's better to look for quality players in form who are likely to still get points even when fixtures are poor, and save your transfers for other players.

I think it's better to look for the player you think would outperform the rest over the 38-game season and not just over the next 3-5 games.

Defenders are a bit of a minefield this year. It feels like the top 4-6 teams are not settled, due to injuries and players returning from World Cup duties. And forwards don't tend to be value for money (as this article rightly points out: http://whogottheassist.com/the-death-of-the-third-striker/).

Anyone else opting for a 3-5-2, with a power midfield?

Haha unsurprisingly given the source of said article I am! Got Not Diomansy Kamara in the write off slot and deciding between 352 and 442. Value is there not in the 5.something forwards

        Yeah I'm currently on:

        Foster / Fab
        D.Luiz / Cedric / Tomkins / Diop / Wan-Bisaka
        Salah / Mane / Eriksen / Pedro / Mkhi
        Aguero / Arnie / Quaner

I could downgrade Mkhi for Jota and upgrade a defender. Or downgrade Mkhi to a 4.5 and turn Quaner into Zaha.

Bobby Reid could become of interest.

I completely take on board the death theory, but am convinced that this season (and moving forward) the importance of a three man bench will be critical.

The Man City rotation thing is only going to become more prevalent among higher spending squads. Nailed players are going to become fewer and fewer in the attacking positions. Having 15 solid options you can rely on (and rotate yourself) is a strategy I'm strongly leaning toward.

For the 3rd striker, that means Josh King for me, until a lesser priced option becomes viable.

I think Arnie Zaha + 11.0 fwd of your choice could be a good forward line in a 343. They are nailed on, hungry for goals in teams not really affected by the world cup. I prefer them to all the unproven or not nailed 6.5-7.0 mids...

I keep changing my team every day. Here's the one for today:

    Patricio | (Steele)
    Azpilicueta | Robertson | Mendy | Bellerin | (Doherty)
    Salah | Eriksen | Sane | Richarlison | (Cairney)
    Zaha | Wood | (Andone)

Still looking for suitable alternatives of Mendy.
I swapped Firmino to Eriksen, because of the 40 extra points that I will get from him.

I have realized that, and am thinking about it. But Aubameyang, Aguero or Firmino is not appealing for me at this point. Aguero will not start GW2. Aubameyand will score how much -- 220 max? Not worth my 11m.

Morata / Vardy / Arnautovic / Lacazette are on my watchlist, and I can easily swap Zaha / Wood to one of them.

Because, Jesus is back, and the talk of the town is, he is looking sharp as ever. Remember the start of last season? It required a Jesus injury to bring back Aguero in the team.

And, I had a Kane. I realized that was one of the mistakes for my poor showing last season. Less total points. I am going back to my template of successful seasons. For now, at least.
