With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Latest draft - what do you think? 😉

    DDG
van Dijk - Luiz - Vestergaard
    Salah (C) - Sanchéz - B. Silva - Richarlison - Pedro
    Lacazette - Gray

    (4.0 - Stones - Kamara - Wan-Bissaka)

Surely I'll have to w8 and see what the match between Chelsea and City offers, but if Luiz and Stones(from GW2) looks nailed, then my plan is to do Sanchéz + B. Silva/Pedro -> 2 other midfielders (might be KDB and Mkhi + 1mil) Then do Gray -> Zaha/Arnie for free after GW3 😉

Defense should be fairly nailed (watching out for Stones/Luiz ofc), but would like to let it stay as it is, and focus transfers in my midfield/attack.

You're right. Also saves me 0.5.

Vestergaard > Bertrand. I tend to like the CB more if priced the same due to BPS and goal threat. And Vestergaard will really bring some air force into that box on corners 😉

        But I like Bertrand too.

Lol, yet Son wants to go play there after the World Cup, despite now that he's established himself at Spurs. Typical nonsense. Watch Spurs find a winning formula with Moura or Lamela and Son won't get a look in besides 20 min appearances again.

This is my team at the moment, feel free to rip into it. Feels kinda wrong not having a City mid/forward in there, but I think Mane/Auba are better options, respectively

    Ryan / Button
    Azpi / Mendy / Robertson / Sakho / Wan-Bissaka
    Salah / Mane / Ramsey / Richarlison / Ralls
    Aubameyang / Arnautovic / Kamara

I’m not a fan of 2 Liverpool midfielders, one or the other for me, midfields looks like it could do with some work if you plan on 3-4-3 formation.

It'll be 4-4-2! I've tried to upgrade Ramsey while tinkering but I'm not sure there's a way to do it that actually makes much sense, value-wise. Also lol on Mendy - his fitness is a worry, and it might depend on whether he plays in the Community Shield, but I do like him a lot

I’d keep Ramsey in all honesty.. manager says he will be key to Arsenal’s squad this season... and always seems to end up on high FPL points. I’d want to upgrade Richarlison or Ralls (depending on who your going to start) more. Everton don’t look great at all since they beat that grass roots team 22-0.

Mendy... I love the look of him. I don’t think they’d spend £55 odd million pounds to not start him. Now he’s back to full fitness I think he will be nailed in place personally. Only time will tell.

Tinkering around with some different ideas and I have to admit I liked the look of this one:

    Ederson (Stekelenburg)
    Robertson Luiz Tarkowski Lovren Wan-Bissaka
Salah Hazard De Bruyne (Stephens, Masuaku)
    Aguero Zaha

Apart from the WC issues with the Belgians and Lovren which I’ll deal with through replacements+budget, I like the rest of it! What do you all think?

Intriguing. I am looking at something similar:

Inclined to agree in the case of Lovren, although my draft had Mane, which precluded that option. Cairney is the 5.0 mid I'm eyeing (see my post next page). But I am going to give some thought to your draft, as I am a huge fan of KDB/Haz. Eriksen has hung with KDB over the last two seasons and might again. Mane looks inspired this year, but I feel like he will be felled by the inevitable injury or ban at some point and mins will suffer per #history.

    Ederson
    Alonso | Robbo | 5.5 | Tomkins
    Salah | Eriksen | Mane | 5.0
    Auba | Arnie

    Stek | Wan-B | Stephens | Quaner

5.5 def is probably Bellerin (I know first 2 fixtures rough), maybe Bailly if United start looking less shambolic.
5.0 mid one of Cairney/Hughes/Neves (probably in that order).
If Mendy looks like he will play and Heaton heals up, Mendy could become the missing def and Heaton slots in for Ederson.
If Wan-B stays nailed, could swap Tomkins for a def who rotates well with Palace (NEW, SOU, etc.).

Players are largely template, but I haven't seen too many teams with this precise allocation of funds (most spend less on back line, more up top, and/or mid priced 3rd and 4th mids instead of premium 3rd and 5.0 4th). Obviously the 5.0 playing mid is a worry, but is the team otherwise strong enough if a 5.0 emerges who can score 115 or so (a ala Mooy last year)? Notwithstanding the new manager and new system, I feel like Alonso (and Azpi) can approach the points production they have the last two seasons (worries over Alonso last year - granted, different ones from this year, proved unfounded over season's course). Not confident that if I were to downgrade that 6.5 def position to a 5.0 def and upgrade 5.0 mid to someone like Richarlison or Jota (or upgrade Quaner to Mitro) that I would come out with more points across the two positions. Seems to be a dearth of value at the 5.0 def price point (and 6.0, other than Robbo/VVD and Mendy if he plays). Also trying to build a squad that isn't dependent on a lot of planned transfers (as events to come will no doubt dictate unplanned moves).

    Thoughts?

I'm having the same problem w/ the dearth of quality defenders at 5.0 and 6.0 bracket (and any bracket, really). It's been hard to have any confidence in defenders outside of a Liverpool defender Ederson, whom I've also opted for.

I'm intrigued by your fund allocation. I was on Eriksen for a bit but am worried that Spurs won't be at full strength and thus he won't carry the same punch he would with a fit and ready Kane/Alli in the side.

All told, though, I like the way you're thinking. You're tempting me to dump Rich/Jota for a Chelsea def. I think it's the right move.

        Cheers!
KUNTHEMAN(C) has a very interesting 5-3-2 draft on the prev page that might interest you as well.

I like it! Cos it's very similar to mine.

If you run a 4.5 set and forget keeper. You can have 3 premium defenders and Jota instead of a 5.0 in the midfield.

I really think Patricia (as with Fab) will keep within 20-30 points of the top keeper this season.

Will give thought to Pat in goal, especially if Mendy becomes a dependable option. Thanks!

      Thoughts on this 3-5-2?
Defence not the strongest but the cheap defenders rotate well for the first few weeks. Pereira potentially OOP.
Not bothered about not having any premium strikers for the first few GWs.
I could get Peltier for Bamba, but I don't want to take another risk in defence seeing as I already have AWB (last season Peltier was still rotated in some games). Bamba likelier to get BP too.

      Foster - Ryan
      Robertson - Pereira - Dunk - Bamba - AWB
      Salah - Sanchez - Eriksen - Mane - Richarlison
      Arnie - King - Kamara

No better picks than Sanchez? Utd looks disarray.

              He's looked good in pre-season.
Also he's an easy switch to KdB or Hazard once they get going.
Can't be bothered with Sane, who could get benched if Pep opts for a 3-5-2 - meanwhile Sanchez is OOP for a few GWs and on penalties.
Another option is Siggy + Morata/Laca for Sanchez + King but it's unclear whether Morata and Laca will be starting every week, and Laca's first two games are horrendous.

Not balanced at all. Buying premium striker will cost you Salah or at least 8 points

Not true. I could get a premium striker by downgrading Sanchez to a 6m mid and upgrading Josh King.
Either way, I'm fine going without a premium striker until I wildcard around GW 5 - 6.

Pereira is an interesting pick. Sanchez > Sane and upgrade Dunk?

Sane too much of a rotation risk for my liking. Dunk has some decent fixtures (GW 1 wat, GW 4 FUL, GW 5 sou). I think he's a bargain at 4.5 if he starts putting goals into the other team's net instead of his own.

Forwards are precious positions, so not sure about having a non playing forward in your squad ?

Surely better to play 343 and have a 4.5 playing mid on your bench ?

                Kamara to 6.5/7
                Richarlson to playing 4.5

I don't want to use my 3rd forward so I don't see the point in doing that.
I think Richarlison is better value than other 6.5 / 7 strikers (bar King and Arnie)

Fair enough, but you end up with a non playing 4.5 3rd forward on your bench ....

Personally I reckon Wood, King, Zaha, Tosun, Arnie, Wilson etc will all get a better points per game score than Richarlison this season .... as they all did last season beating his 3.3 ppg 🙂

Elyounoussi would have been worth a punt but FPL have overpriced him I reckon.
