Best Watford players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Why not Bellerin and suffer through first two? Looks good after that, and he could provide some attacking threat in GW1-2.

    Ederson
    Alonso | Robbo | 5.5 | Tomkins
    Salah | Eriksen | Mane | 5.0
    Auba | Arnie

    Stek | Wan-B | Stephens | Quaner

5.5 def is probably Bellerin (I know first 2 fixtures rough), maybe Bailly if United start looking less shambolic.
5.0 mid one of Cairney/Hughes/Neves (probably in that order).
If Mendy looks like he will play and Heaton heals up, Mendy could become the missing def and Heaton slots in for Ederson.
If Wan-B stays nailed, could swap Tomkins for a def who rotates well with Palace (NEW, SOU, etc.).

Players are largely template, but I haven't seen too many teams with this precise allocation of funds (most spend less on back line, more up top, and/or mid priced 3rd and 4th mids instead of premium 3rd and 5.0 4th). Obviously the 5.0 playing mid is a worry, but is the team otherwise strong enough if a 5.0 emerges who can score 115 or so (a ala Mooy last year)? Notwithstanding the new manager and new system, I feel like Alonso (and Azpi) can approach the points production they have the last two seasons (worries over Alonso last year - granted, different ones from this year, proved unfounded over season's course). Not confident that if I were to downgrade that 6.5 def position to a 5.0 def and upgrade 5.0 mid to someone like Richarlison or Jota (or upgrade Quaner to Mitro) that I would come out with more points across the two positions. Seems to be a dearth of value at the 5.0 def price point (and 6.0, other than Robbo/VVD and Mendy if he plays). Also trying to build a squad that isn't dependent on a lot of planned transfers (as events to come will no doubt dictate unplanned moves).

    Thoughts?

I'm having the same problem w/ the dearth of quality defenders at 5.0 and 6.0 bracket (and any bracket, really). It's been hard to have any confidence in defenders outside of a Liverpool defender Ederson, whom I've also opted for.

I'm intrigued by your fund allocation. I was on Eriksen for a bit but am worried that Spurs won't be at full strength and thus he won't carry the same punch he would with a fit and ready Kane/Alli in the side.

All told, though, I like the way you're thinking. You're tempting me to dump Rich/Jota for a Chelsea def. I think it's the right move.

I like it! Cos it's very similar to mine.

If you run a 4.5 set and forget keeper. You can have 3 premium defenders and Jota instead of a 5.0 in the midfield.

I really think Patricia (as with Fab) will keep within 20-30 points of the top keeper this season.

          Thoughts on this 3-5-2?
Defence not the strongest but the cheap defenders rotate well for the first few weeks. Pereira potentially OOP.
Not bothered about not having any premium strikers for the first few GWs.
I could get Peltier for Bamba, but I don't want to take another risk in defence seeing as I already have AWB (last season Peltier was still rotated in some games). Bamba likelier to get BP too.

          Foster - Ryan
          Robertson - Pereira - Dunk - Bamba - AWB
          Salah - Sanchez - Eriksen - Mane - Richarlison
          Arnie - King - Kamara

                  He's looked good in pre-season.
Also he's an easy switch to KdB or Hazard once they get going.
Can't be bothered with Sane, who could get benched if Pep opts for a 3-5-2 - meanwhile Sanchez is OOP for a few GWs and on penalties.
Another option is Siggy + Morata/Laca for Sanchez + King but it's unclear whether Morata and Laca will be starting every week, and Laca's first two games are horrendous.

Not balanced at all. Buying premium striker will cost you Salah or at least 8 points

                    5 years, 8 months ago

Not true. I could get a premium striker by downgrading Sanchez to a 6m mid and upgrading Josh King.
Either way, I'm fine going without a premium striker until I wildcard around GW 5 - 6.

Sane too much of a rotation risk for my liking. Dunk has some decent fixtures (GW 1 wat, GW 4 FUL, GW 5 sou). I think he's a bargain at 4.5 if he starts putting goals into the other team's net instead of his own.

Forwards are precious positions, so not sure about having a non playing forward in your squad ?

Surely better to play 343 and have a 4.5 playing mid on your bench ?

                    Kamara to 6.5/7
                    Richarlson to playing 4.5

I don't want to use my 3rd forward so I don't see the point in doing that.
I think Richarlison is better value than other 6.5 / 7 strikers (bar King and Arnie)

Fair enough, but you end up with a non playing 4.5 3rd forward on your bench ....

Personally I reckon Wood, King, Zaha, Tosun, Arnie, Wilson etc will all get a better points per game score than Richarlison this season .... as they all did last season beating his 3.3 ppg 🙂

Am I the only one who doesn’t see value in most of the sub 9.0 midfielders? Think there’s a lot of fool’s gold there. Pogba and Ramsey the only ones that interest me, maybe Mkhitaryan/Willian if they’re nailed. The only cheap mid I’d be considering is Cairney. I don’t think they will outsource the likes of Azpi, Robertson...even Arnautovic, Zaha.

Fair enough 2 very good fixtures to start for Eriksen and Mahrez must be a doubt despite been given the all clear. ( still yellow flagged)

Similar to mine so I lile it. Very good balance if you plan on playing 2 up front every week.
My only concern is where you'd downgrade if you decide to upgrade your third striker at some stage. Might take a few moves?

I'd likely change with a wildcard, Likely bring Kane in once August is out the way. A downgrade of one of the 9.5 mids would be likely source of funds

                        Ok DZ need responses here.
The 11 below have to be nailed as my bench is too bad to post.
I will monitor Luiz and Mahrez in CS anyone else not nailed?

3-4 week plan with .5 ITB
                        1. Mane to KDB
                        2. Choice of 3 (probably Coleman) to Bellerin
                        3. And maybe Davies to Mendy

                        Patricio

                        Robertson Davies Bailly Luiz Coleman

                        Salah Mane Mahrez

If that team has to be nailed then you are going to have some issues. Davies, Bailly, Luiz, Mahrez and Wood will all be benched occasionally I feel

If you want nailed you need to go for the likes of Eriksen, one of Zaha or Arnie up top. Key players. Then the team sheets won't be too much of a worry

K from that mid of Salah Erik and KDB ( when back)
Then go Wood > Zaha / Arnie
Would need to find 1 mil from defence
And don't like not having 2 Coty attackers but they are never going to be nailed with the exception of KDB.
                                Thanks again

Don't really see the point of commenting on RMTs before next Wednesday but... I could easily foresee a -4 after GW1 as there isn't much balance of budget

Looking a little more long term, tempted to start GW1 with both Pogba and Bellerin ( both seem nicely priced) rather than plan for GW3 transfers. Madness?

                          Nod madness.
In the scenario where they do better that expected in hard fixtures they would surely see price rises.

The way I see it, if he leaves they'll buy a replacement. If he stays and Sarri is pissed off with him then Pedro is a shout.

The downgrade from Salah to Mané frees up so Much cash. Anybody else feel their team looks much stronger without Salah in it?

Would not know. Ain't done a draft without him.

I think there's a possibility to ditch through the season but I wouldn't start without in case he continues where he left off

This. Starting without Salah is an unnecessary risk. Take a punt or two with your other players if you fancy a differential.

Most of the drafts i've messed around with are Salahless. While I don't believe he's worth the £13m, the trouble is the normally reliable alternative pricey big hitters like Kane, Auba, KDB, Aguero, Hazard, hell even Lukaku all have question marks over their season openers.
Salah could be one to start with, then a downgrade to one of the above with change leftover.

                        Finally love this draft.

Morata is the only one I think people can dispute.

                        Ederson 4m
                        Robbo Bailly Luiz Cedric AWB
                        Salah Sanchez Eriksen Neves Stephens
                        Morata Arnie King

Sanchez will become KDB whenever he is back and I'd love to squeeze firmino in but actually really fancy Chelsea fixtures so may just stick with morata for now.

Best 5.0 mid? Kenedy/Hughes/Cairney/Lennon? Which 2 to start with? I'm currently playing 5-4-1

Btw I'm trying to rotate the 2x5.0 mids. I'm currently on Kenedy and Hughes! Any suggestions are appreciated! The other 3 mids are Salah - Sanchez - Mane! I have opted for Morata as my lone striker with Sorloth and Quaner on the bench!

That would be the worst fwd line I have been very seen.

I'm leaning towards Ralls (pens) and maybe Neves (set pieces)
Kenedy's a shout but awful fixtures

Actually a few decent options at this price. Hard to say which will rotate well as they all seem to start at home. Don't go kenedy. Neves, Cairney, Costa, Hughes and falls could all work out well

I'm a bit biased with kenedy to be fair as I had him towards the end of last season and he flattered to deceive and loved getting booked for a 1 pointer! Don't get your hopes up with those fixtures.

                        RateMyTrash:
                        Ederson / 4.0
                        Robertson / Pereira / Kabasele / AWB / Peltier
                        Salah / Richarlison / Mahrez / Gray / 4.5
                        Auba / Aguero / Mitrovic

Plan on starting Robertson and Pereira every week; Cardiff, Watford + Palace rotate really well to have at least one favourable fixture for the cheapies each week. Gray is a punt, he could really step up with Mahrez gone.

Midfield weak. So many with Rich as 3rd best mid. He hasn't scored since GW 12. Better options from promoted teams imo. Mitrovic no thanks. I'd rather Arnie+Zaha and 1 premium striker and spend cash elsewhere

Appreciate the feedback. Like everyone else with Richarlison the thinking is that he'll thrive again under Marco Silva and at least he's at a price point where he's easily replaceable.
