There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

Does anyone know where I can find the pre-season form / minutes played spreadsheet is for all teams and players? It's been provided / linked here every year by the same poster and is incredibly useful for figuring out who will be ready for GW1.

If anyone can link / share that would be much appreciated!

Thanks Wiseman, it was actually the Excel spreadsheet that has the pre-season fixtures, along with which players played in it and for how long. This seems to be minutes played for last year's Premier League, do you have the pre-season one?

        Cheers

Interested in Sokratis, but not really sure about his attacking threat.

A nailed Chelsea defender would be ideal

RMT my latest 3-4-3 draft please, think it's pretty well balanced and flexible? 0.5 ITB for possible Erik > KDB move GW3. Fabs/Foster 4.5 GK rotation Hughes/Costa 5.0 mid rotation both look decent enough to me? Think it looks pretty solid as regards early starters too? Any thoughts much appreciated, thanks.

    Foster
    Robertson, Mendy, PVA
    Salah, Eriksen, Ramsey, Hughes
    Zaha, Aguero, Wood.

    Fabianski, Costa, Cedric, Wan-Bissaka.

Don't like keeper rotation and 5.0-rotation. You also don't need Cedric, you are fine with one 4.5 mid on the Bench, get Peltier.
Would rather have Fab and 4.0 and one 5.0 and a 4.5 mid. Then you can upgrade Wood to Arnie or 5.0 -> Richarlison/Jota/Pedro

Which teams will be the most negative / defensive / play with the deepest block this year?

I ask because these are the teams whose goalkeepers get the most save points e.g. Fabianski for Swansea last year. Fabianski will not score as well this year as he did last year due to playing for Pellegrini.

      Watford worth a look?

Gracia's all about solidity from what I hear.

I'm currently on Foster and a 4.0. Opening three fixtures are golden. Even if I haven't wildcarded by then, the only fixtures I'd worry about are Spurs (h) GW4 and Arsenal (a) Gw7, right up to GW13.

Also, I hear Gracia's Malaga team had a reputation as giant killers.

Interesting! Hadn't considered Watford. You reckon Foster is definitely ahead of Gomes in the pecking order?

Personally, I'm just building a team for the first 3 game weeks and keen to lock down a £4.5m keeper from a team with decent fixtures and which plays a low block. Will look into Garcia's record at Malaga.

Watford pre-season: Looks like Foster has played 1.5 games, Gomes the same, and Dahlberg 1 game --> https://www.watfordfc.com/matches/fixtures-results

It's a lottery who will start in the Watford defence, but I would be amazed if Foster didn't start in goal. Rumours are that Gomes may not even stay this season.

Hey guys, why are people choosing Fabianski instead of Begovic as their 4.5 GK? I know Bournemouth defense not quite as good but their first 9 fixtures are so much better than West Ham. I know last season Fabianski got a lot more points. But now we are picking teams for the next 9 or 10 GWs and a lot of people will be wildcarding within this period anyway.

Not arguing about the Bou defense. But if you look at WHM fixtures in the first 9 GWs realistically how many clean sheets do you think they will get? One? Bournemouth although of course not as good a defense but much better fixtures..

          Ha. Just kidding around.
Seriously though, it’s not just clean sheets, it’s the goals conceded as well. Bournemouth have in their locker to consistently concede 4 goals, and concede a couple against teams where you’d think they’d get clean sheets.

Fair enough. I just don't see why people (especially ones that are going with 4.5+4.0 GK) are picking Fabianski when they are playing Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, Spurs, and Everton in their first 9 games.

They have improved massively though . I'd expect a much better push from them this season and they should be looking towards a top 6 to 8 spot with that team. Bournmouth have done little to improve. They still gotta play Daniels at the start . As it stands I don't see Bournmouth doing anything defensively .

That's what I think as well. But I see most people picking Fabianski over Begovic. If it's for longer term and they don't plan on using the WC until much later then I could see why. But for the first 9 GWs Begovic have much better fixtures.

Sorloth is a waste of a striker spot imo. No 5.0 striker got 100 points last season. Thats less than Kante. I wouldn't go any lower than 6.5 for a third striker. But that's just me. Cook is a better pick than Dnaiels and I'm personally not a fan of Sanchez. Would rather Eriksen or Mahrez or especially KdB once he's back, but that's just me.

Robertson, Eriksen is a safe alternative to Sanchez with good fixtures too.

      Moura > Jota

      Neves > 4.5

Find remaining 0.5 to get Sorloth to Zaha

How is this for all out attack?

Will be wildcarding early. Probably GW3/4 to get Arsenal, World Cup and Chelsea assets.

    4.5 / 4.0

Boly / Cedric / Tomkins (AWB, Peltier)

    Salah, Sanchez, Eriksen, Mane, Mahrez

    Arnie / Zaha (4.5)

He will play through the middle in GW1 against Wes Morgan and Johnny Evans after having the whole summer off. Brighton in GW2 against Shane Duffy or a new CB.

No way is he tired and United started fast last season. Pre-season form and Jose moaning is being blown out of proportion

He had 152 point last year in a 'bad year' - he is expensive but it's a punt. With him playing up top the first couple of games its a risk worth taking. Easily downgrade to Kdb, Sane, Eriksen, etc... if it doesn't pan out.

I like it. Keep an eye on Luiz though as he might not be nailed on. Also, maybe downgrade Cairney to a 4.5 midfielder (Stephens/Chalobah?) as your midfield and attack is already very solid.

Thanks - not sure about downgrading Cairney though, think he will have a better season than a 4.5er

Defo keeping an eye on Luiz, plus a few others at that price point. Difficult decisions.. know more after CS.

Also been toying with Foster / Fab instead in goal, saving another 0.5..?

No worries! I have Ederson and Hamer but you can go 4.5/4.5. I just don't think you will play Cairney enough for his better output than a 4.5 midfielder to matter that much. Just my opinion though, do what you think is right.

Hey guys, been playing around with my team a bit. This is what I currently have:

    Ederson Hamer
    Robertson Bailly Cedric Doherty AWB
    Salah Mane Ramsey Jota Stephens
    Aubameyang Tosun Arnautovic

    0 ITB

I think Mane is a safer option that Sane/Mahrez and Eriksen's output might be affected by the number of Spurs players being rested.

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't double up on Southampton defence although their fixtures are nice. Daniels is not nailed on in the long-term. Sterling will likely be rested for the first game week or two. Mili probably isn't worth his price as he benefited from a lot of penalties last season and that may not be the case this season. Otherwise it looks pretty good.

Ederson and Mendy would mean 11.5 on the bench - feel like you got to play your Man City assets every game.

How’s this looking for a first draft:-

    Allison Stekelenburg
    Mendy Davies Cédric Peltier Wan-Bissaka
    Sané Eriksen Mahrez Mkhitaryan Costa
    Lacazette Firmino Arnautovic

I know I need to monitor a few but assuming these will all be starting GW1

    Cheers

Robertson is probably a better pick than Davies at the same price point.

True, but wasn’t mad on doubling on Liv defence.

Ah sorry, missed Allison in goal.

I’d say it’s a solid team. You obviously consciously gone without Salah, so I won’t be that guy to say “get Salah”.

I’d personally rather gamble on someone like Morata over Lacazette given the opening fixtures. If it was Auba, I’d keep Auba... but Laca just lacks that something in comparison.

Mkhi not nailed and wouldn’t double up on Arsenal attack so early.

Also Arnautovic, although on form, has horrible fixtures and I can’t see him performing in that West Ham set up for the start of the season.

If Palace sign Meyer it will really scupper my Sørloth plans.

I posted a similar comment a couple pages back. I was told he is an AM rather than a striker.

Interesting. If anything it could improve Sørloth’s potential.

He actually morphed into a deep-lying playmaker last season, so would expect him to be a Cabaye replacement if he joins.

      Why?
