With less than a week to go until the 2018/19 Premier League season starts it’s time to start considering our Gameweek 1 Fantasy captains.

We’ve launched our first skipper poll of the season (below) for you to register who you think the best candidate is.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is expected to be an early favourite given his pre-season form and a potentially favourable home fixture against new-look West Ham. However, Sadio Mané (£9.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) could receive some backing as the cheaper alternatives to the Egyptian.

Arsenal’s opening match against Manchester City should pull in plenty of interest for this conversation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) in good form in pre-season and Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) netting a brace in Sunday’s Community Shield final.

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.5m) are likely to be the most popular captain choices for Friday night’s opening match between Manchester United and Leicester City.

We have also included Harry Kane (£12.5m) although there is some doubt over whether he will feature against Newcastle United.

Two defenders who may pick up some traction are the duo that registered double-figure hauls on the final day of 2017/18 in Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m).

The Dutchman’s colleagues Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£6.5m) may also be considered with Crystal Palace a fashionable team for investment at the start of the season.

Make sure you vote in the poll below and tell us why you made your choice in the comments.

Mina is 1/10 to sign to Everton.

So not if that gors through. Maybe a week. Williams is on his way out. Might play a kid there with Keane. But Mina is the main threat.

Can we settle this Arnie, Zaha or King debate. I just can’t decide on which two of the three. These are the Pros and cons I’d say of each.

    Joshua King

    +Nailed on
    +Playing as a striker
    +Slightly cheaper
    +On form in preseason
    +Great fixtures
    +Playing for an attacking side

-Had a poor season last year
-Not been a consistent player throughout the years
-Playing for Bounemouth who aren’t a great team so limited support
-Not as well known and as established in the Premier League as Zaha and Arnie

    Marco Arnautovic

    +In preseason form
    +Playing alongside other quality players
    +Did very well last year
    +Explosive
+More fixture proof than some players
    +Nailed on

    -Awful fixtures
-Playing for an inconsistent West Ham
    -Could play as a winger

    Wilfried Zaha

    +Nailed on if he stays
    +Main man at his club
    +Good fixtures
    +Playing well preason
    +Established in the prem
    +Wins a lot of penalties

-Plays for palace so lack of quality around him
-Uncertainty around where he will play next season
    -Could play as a winger
-Heart maybe not at Palace so performance may be effected
    -Not as explosive as Arnie

Given all this, who will you be going with? I think it’s possibly the hardest choice at this stage.

From the start, Zaha I think is slightly safer

Arnie did well last year in a pretty awful West Ham team. With better attackers in Yarmolenko and that other guy they splurged 50 million on (can't remember his name) supporting him I think he's going to be a beast this season.

King is a bit streaky but could be a good differential punt if he starts well, more of a risk than the other two imo.

Zaha we need to see if he stays or goes.

I really don't know. Currently on Zaha and Arnie but very tempted to get King in. Kind of hoping Zaha leaves Palace. That would make my mind up.

Mikhi or Bilva? Got Aguero and no Arsenal coverage. Not sure about Mikhi minutes and Bilva will prolly lose his spot after 3-4GW's, opinions?

Even if he does, what will he realistically get away to arsenal? An assist? Maybe a goal? Then a Couple of 1’s, and 2’s for a few weeks, followed by a FT to replace him with someone who plays. Is the pessimistic viewpoint.

The optimistic viewpoint could be, yes he gets the first 3-4 games, gets something like 7-12-8, then can be swapped to Pogba just as Pogba is coming back/Bilva is getting rotated.

I think there could be upside in starting with Bilva & Alexis, planning a gradual switch over to KDB/Pogba over the first few weeks as they get back.

Am on A - their attack being so strong could mean reliable 12 point hauls for Menderson in GWs 2-7

I have B. Ederson will not get many save points or baps and later Mahrez may be needed and one forward may get injury. Flexibility is important. And even if Fernandinho is a waste of City spot, he is also nailed option like Ederson who needs 4.5 back up.

Anyone see merit in getting both Ashley Young & Luke Shaw? Paying a little extra to guarantee utd’s left back slot every week... if Shaw was just 0.5 cheaper it would be perfect.

    1. Lukakwho

33 year old winger Ashley Young will not manage more than 25 games max. Shaw has the other 13 at the minute, one of which is Leicester home.

    3. Marmalade Forest
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

I don’t think it’s the worst thing in to have a 5.0 OTB, but if you’re guaranteeing one doesn’t play, you’ll need a decent second bench spot too.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, Tomkins & AWB are the perfect 2nd & 3rd subs and cheap as chips.

        I’m thinking about it.
I actually think shaw could be ridiculous value this year, fancy him to have a good old battle with Young for the left back slot.

They’re all absolute punts, Neves likes to shoot from distance & should have a few set pieces. Cairney & Ralls have pens apparently. Wilshere could contribute from play.

Overall I fancy Wolves to do well so prob Neves, just be ready for blanks & YC’s

Have somehow ended up with a City double up in defence (Ederson and Mendy) when they are arguably the greatest attacking force we have seen. Could there be some value in this as teams try and sit off City rather than attack?

    1. H-SF

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

I think Ederson isn’t great value personally. Many 4.5’s will easily score 80% (or more) of his points. Think he could be a waste of a city slot

      1. Miguel Sanchez
        • 9 Years

Over the course of the season maybe, but for the first few weeks I prefer a keeper who will get clean sheets rather than save points. Great fixtures too so should be getting a lot of cs

    Ederson [4.0]
    Cedric Mee Shaw Robertson WanBiss
    Mahrez Salah Sanchez Richarlison Ralls
    Austin Aguerro Kamara

I'm going to play 4-4-2, around GW4 transfer Shaw, Sanchez, Mahrez out and buy Trippier/Young, Eriksen and KDB in.

    Ederson / Fabi

Fab to 4.5 (you shouldn’t be benching Ederson)

Cedric or digne to a 4.5, is probably be rid of digne.
Downgrade one of Mili or Tosun to get funds for Auba over tosun

To fit him in could downgrade Cedric to Bednarek and Tomkins to AWB but leaves you slightly open to rotation after the first few weeks but if you plan to wildcard early enough it might be best? Otherwise only downgrade one defender as mentioned above and downgrade to a 4.0m GK and play ederson every week.

But by downgrading Tosun to Kamara and Digne to Kabasele you’d be able to upgrade Arnie to Auba.

Daniels / Robertson / Mendy (Bednarek / Tomkins)
        Salah / Richarlison / Cairney / Mhki (Hudson-Odoi)

I've got Daniels (Bou) , Tomkins (Cry) and Wan Bissacka (Cry) ... I was fond of tomkins then heard WB is only 4m nailed defender hence gone for both but should I swap out tomkins and use WB for bou/palace rotation?

What 's Dilva's situation I've posted a few times yesterday saying he is on extended holiday break due to the world cup?

    Why didn't Ederson start yesterday?

Pep played Bravo for the bantz-

If he's fit enough for the bench I would expect him to start vs Arsenal though.

Not sure - he was in his kit and seemed to be struggling in the heat on the bench. Doubt Bravo will start against Arsenal, he managed to look useless the few times the ball was near the city goal

Pep always plays Bravo in domestic cup comps. Ederson is fine and will be launching coordinated rockets once more at the weekend.

Will Hennessey or Guaita be CP's starting goalie?

Hen has a slight knock which should make Hodgson stick with Guaita for a start at least who has done nothing wrong in preseason

    Which option looks better?

    A. Sanchez + Richarlison ( any 6.5 mid)

    B. Eriksen + B. Silva

Is Aguero a necessity considering he wont be first captain choice? Is it good value having him in your team if he doesnt start every game?

He is no more a necessity than Firmino or Lacazette who will score more than him this year, for less €.

Have a feeling his owners are in for tough times when he either blanks, gets benched, get hauled off early, gets injured, or gets sent off in GW1/2

Anyone else considering Raul Jimenez of Wolves at 5.5? I see Jota mentioned a fair bit but Jimenez is 1.0 cheaper and is technically playing ahead of him, add that he’ll have Moutinho, Neves and the wingbacks providing decent supply, he could be a nice early punt as a third striker or even second if going 352/442

I don’t know too much about him but if we’re considering Jota, why not Jimenez?

Might be benched, with Jota playing up front.

Saying that, I have Costa, who's equally at risk..

I had Costa but switched things round to get Jiminez given it looks like Adama Traore is joining - I just can’t see Jota starting up front in the prem, it’s not Championship defences they’re up against so feel they need a focal point

Yeah will be interesting to see! I also have Patricio, think their defence is arguably better than their attack - I might be wrong but from pre season they come across more a Conte 343 than a City 343/352

also have Patricio, feel their defensive assets could be real value, time will tell

I started out with Keita, Costa, Lacazette in my team but this site made me taker them out.

Just had a realisation that I should go with my gut, so some made some transfers.

Not Laca though, too unsure of whether he'll start.
