With less than a week to go until the 2018/19 Premier League season starts it’s time to start considering our Gameweek 1 Fantasy captains.

We’ve launched our first skipper poll of the season (below) for you to register who you think the best candidate is.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is expected to be an early favourite given his pre-season form and a potentially favourable home fixture against new-look West Ham. However, Sadio Mané (£9.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) could receive some backing as the cheaper alternatives to the Egyptian.

Arsenal’s opening match against Manchester City should pull in plenty of interest for this conversation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) in good form in pre-season and Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) netting a brace in Sunday’s Community Shield final.

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.5m) are likely to be the most popular captain choices for Friday night’s opening match between Manchester United and Leicester City.

We have also included Harry Kane (£12.5m) although there is some doubt over whether he will feature against Newcastle United.

Two defenders who may pick up some traction are the duo that registered double-figure hauls on the final day of 2017/18 in Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m).

The Dutchman’s colleagues Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£6.5m) may also be considered with Crystal Palace a fashionable team for investment at the start of the season.

Make sure you vote in the poll below and tell us why you made your choice in the comments.

    Ederson
Van Dijk, David Luiz, Cedric, Daniels
    Mkhitaryan, Salah (c), Richarlison
    Aubamayang, Aguero, Arnautovic

    Bench: Speroni, Cairney, Fernandinho, Wan-Bissaka

Contemplating Aubamayang to Zaha and funds > mid/defence? Good shout or leave?
Also chances of Miki starting make me uneasy

I having a hard time changing the front 3

Very similar team. Ramsey is injured so Mkhitaryan will start.

Eh? Mkhi and Ramsey play totally different positions. Guendouzi I'd have thought would be most likely.
Unless Ozil drops to midfield and Mkhi onto the wing...

Exactly. It depends on the formation played but if Lacazette plays centre forward, Auba on the left then Mkhitaryan could play on the right with Ozil in MF.

I guess I just want a decent midfielder for the 7.0/7.5 mark. Any other options? The Emery unknown line up feels like no one is confirmed in that midfield

yes, i'm really torn too as i want auba and aguero and arnie long term but was considering avoiding Auba while he plays city and chelsea and playing King instead for these 2 fixtures.
...however i'm obviously concerned about the reshuffle and trying to get Auba back in......

      - any thoughts/advice?
      - should we be looking at a long term structure at this point and avoid fixture faves. ?

exactly this issue myself. Im keeping the front 3, Miki seems like a good chance to play with ramsey slight injury and contract situation. Maybe Miki will get nailed and perform or another 7.0 or less will really pick up form. Im sticking.

Definitely an option, if you can fit him in.

Option and I started with him in my draft but United as a whole don't look capable of destroying teams. For that reason I'd say Mane or KDB instead.

I'm going with him as a punt. Price is ideal to shift on if he doesn't do anything. Will prob give him until Wolves at home in GW6 to show something, otherwise he's getting binned to make funds for Kane.

Trying to figure out if it’s worth having Aguero or Sánchez.
      Salah / Pedro / BSilva / ?
      Laca / Arnie / ?

      Either
      Aguero and Lennon
      Or
      Sánchez and Jimenez

Anyone else worried that Zaha won't be the same as last season - with Loftus-Cheek not in the team as well as all this rumour/transfer stuff going on?

    1. The_Adam
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

By the time the season starts the transfer window will be shut and Zaha will know where his future lies (for the next 5 months at least), so I'm not envisaging any problems. He's been good in pre-season by all accounts.

    2. ᶠᶦˡᵗʰʸLucre $$$

He only scored 9 PL goals last season, so I'd be hoping he is going to be a lot better than last season if I had him.

RLC wasn't there in preseason either and Zaha had a goal a game record there I think. Not that all the team's were PL caliber but it still gives us an idea of what kind of season we can expect from Wilf.

The 5.0m midfield slot is constantly changing based on the flavour of the month. Are we able to have a quick discussion about the best options?

Neves - On Pens, nearly all of his shots last season were from outside the box and only managed a handful of "wonder strikes"

Cairney - Fulham are getting some decent attacking players and surely this will help his assist potential? Has scored 23 goals in last three seasons but not many last year.

Costa - Wolves fans keep saying he is the pick of the bunch, but with Traore possibly settling on a spot in the front 3, does this rule out Costa as the best option?

Ralls - On Pens, probably a little underrated around here given he plays for a side most are assuming with get relegated. Seems to be involved with assists this pre-season.

Hughest - The outside of the box pick, with 2 goals and 3 assists last year and a kind draw to start the season, can he capitalise and is he nailed?

Who are you choosing to go with and why?

    1. Bambi
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

      neves- no
Cairney - potentially with set piece juties and big stong mitro to get on the end of things
Costa - too much of a rotation risk for my liking
Ralls - Cardiff don't score and will have low possession - dont rely on pens - they may only get 1 or 2
Hughes - attacking mid for an ok team - gets in high positions - could get solid bps score with his passing potential

      1. Gussy

So would you prefer Cairney or Hughes if you were put in a do or die situation? 😛

I have Hughes also. He is young, which means potential and was injured during last season. Ppm 3.5 (compare to Fernandinho!) and plum fixtures gw 1 and 3 might, just might though, make him early bandwagon. Kenedy had 3.9 ppm but has now too tough fixtures to start with. If I had to plan my gw8 wc now, Kenedy would be in that team.

I've had Cairney ever since my first draft. Have watched him play live a few times over the last couple of seasons when his teams have been to Carrow Road, and last season when Fulham swept past us last year he looked class and I said to myself at the time he'd be in my team this season if Fulham go up. I certainly didn't expect him to be 5.0 anyway, which was a bonus.

No problem! He's actually scored in all three of the last 3 matches I've watch him play at Carrow Road! Once for Blackburn, then a penalty for Fulham as they beat us 3-1 two seasons ago, and he popped up with a goal when they won 2-0 last season too.

Kenedy - Shocking fixtures but he's a real threat, nailed, plays high up, and will be one of the main outlets for his team.

Pellegrini likes a weird 4-2-2-2 system so I think nominally they'll both be "up front".

And if he switches and just goes with 1, I reckon that'd be Arnie. Talismanic.

Luiz is who I've gone for, until Everton show they've sorted themselves out defensively.

Why has Bennett become a less desirable 4.0 compared to Peltier and WB? He was in play as fodder until really recently.

I've got 0.5 ITB and Stephens as my 5th midfielder in a 3-4-3.

Worth chucking in an upgrade to Cairney / Hughes, or keep the 0.5?

Bear in mind I've got Bernardo Silva as one of the 4 midfielders...

I was wandering is there anywhere on this site for members only to discuss there team selections without providing stats to non members?

If one of the mods make this a members only comment then we can talk. Otherwise, we are in big trouble.

Why the Jota love? Isnt he a bit overpriced @6.5?

No Penalties and other set pieces.
@6.5 for a newcomer.. Too much hype?

Time will tell. I'm holding fire at the moment. I also think Wolves start to the season is tougher than many people are letting on! Away to West Ham and Leicester and home to Man City and Everton is a big test.

Maybe, but losing him only takes an FT if he does flop.

i'm really torn as i want auba and aguero and arnie long term but was considering avoiding Auba while he plays city and chelsea and playing King instead for these 2 fixtures.
...however i'm obviously concerned about the reshuffle and trying to get Auba back in......

    - any thoughts/advice?
    - should we be looking at a long term structure at this point and avoid fixture faves. ?

my strategy for what it's worth is to try and pick a team which will generate as much points as possible and as quick as possible for the first 3-4 weeks. That then hopefully gives me flexibility to draft in big hitters via -4pt hits or wildcard.

Obviously it relies on picking players you know will start and do well, e.g. Salah, Eriksen.
