Great Expectations

Just before the start of the 2019/20 season, Brighton and Hove Albion signed Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) for a fee of around £15m.

I was very excited: he had just come off the back of the best season of his career, registering 14 goals and seven assists for Genk as they won the Belgian top flight.

His skilful playstyle and favoured position on the left wing combined with his Belgian nationality inevitably drew comparisons to the departing Eden Hazard.

Trossard tried to distance himself from the hype, but I couldn’t help but think we had pulled off a real coup.

The player said about himself:

I like one against ones. I’m quite fast, turning. I hope I can show you so you know how my style is.

Now reflecting on Trossard’s first season in the Premier League, I’ve been left a bit disappointed, both by Trossard’s overall performances (bar a couple of decent goals and display) and how I feel Potter has used him throughout the campaign.

I’m going to use this article to take a look at Trossard in more detail and hopefully, give a bit more insight into how I expect Albion to line up next season – and who (if any) of the Brighton boys we should be considering for our 2020/21 squads.

I’m going Egan. Think they are being over looked because Hendo left. Wolves, Villa, Leeds look very decent Clean sheet odds to me.

He's only ever finished below his starting price twice and those were the two seasons he played lowest minutes so injuries.

          5 years, 11 months ago

It's a valid comment and point it's just a bit overblown, like the risk not having your price points sorted is a -4

The same 'price', as you have said there. That does it absolutely fine. No 'point' needed.

And all these tasty items will have a price.

Some may be more expensive, some may be cheaper, some may be the same.

But all will have a price.

I still don't get how 'point' helps.

FPL PRICE = The amount of money required to buy an X player.

FPL PRICE POINT = A point on the scale of player prices. Some price points grant access to a higher or lower pool of players.

                  E.g.
Nathan Ferguson (4.0) is available at a GOOD PRICE (cheap) but 4.0 is a BAD PRICE POINT (rigid) as it would require MULTIPLE TRANSFERS to move to a player of equal or better VALUE (Pts. per Game per Cost).

Karl Darlow (5.0) is available at a BAD PRICE (expensive) but 5.0 is a GOOD PRICE POINT (flexible) as it would only require ONE TRANSFER to move to a player of equal or better VALUE (Pts. per Game per Cost).

              • 8 Years
              5 years, 11 months ago

I'd agree that 'cover' is at least a concept.

Example being, say Liverpool/Man City had someone rubbish at home and everyone was expecting a massacre, you might suggest that having one of their players (despite not being on one or more of their big-hitters) might at least give you a chance of having a slice of the points pie if it is indeed 6-0, in that regard giving you some semblance of 'covering' that fixture.

              1. @persecuted_by_mods
                5 years, 11 months ago

I agree, it's a totally valid term but when a few of the popular people on here start denigrating something everyone usually follows suit

No, but in that context it is.

I don't mind it where it's to do with a team 'Man City cover' for example, but asking if Mahrez can cover Sterling etc is irritating for some reason (even if the concept is fine - people asking if one player can match another for less budget, it's the word that's irrationally annoying!)

It's all over the podcasts - "shields" is having someone in your team simply because everyone has him and you will fall behind if you don't. Think KDB last season. "Swords" is when you try to be more aggressive and climb up the ranks with a more of a differential. Picking Sterling over KDB for example.

Yes, definitely this. Talking in the absolute rather than couching it as just an opinion.

And 'to be honest' is not another way of saying 'in my opinion'.

Put 'to be honest' on the list, in fact, absolutely grinds my gears.

No-one has asked you to 'be honest', and besides, beforehand were you lying the whole time?

Problem is, loads of people then give out a score.

"Why is everyone [Insert opinion you've seen on one or two posts on the prior page]" - who the F is everyone??

"Bench is too weak" - most folks don't want a bench, for perfectly reasonable logic

"Your in trouble if [X] gets injured" (usually in response to the striker in a 4-5-1, or the non-playing GK in a 4.0 combo)

"X is bound to regress"... God give me strength

And my personal favourite / the all time classic FFS message-boards nonsense-soundbite:

      Drumroll...

"[X's] stats are good"....WHICH OF [X's] STATS ARE GOOD??!! ARE THEY ALL GOOD? THERE ABOUT A HUNDRED OF THEM - AND THE "STATS" THAT ARE "GOOD" - THEY ARE BACKWARD LOOKING METRICS THAT WERE NOT DESIGNED TO INFORM FPL DECISION MAKING

Not good for the blood pressure

              Let me summarise.

Captaining good players against poor teams generally worked last season.

You'd also have done very well if you avoided Kane vs poor teams, and captained Rashford vs elite defences.

Not all of these are single terms as such, but these type of things annoy me when I see them on here.

      - 'Captain Fail' after 20mins of the 1st half.
      - Asking all week who to captain A or B and still asking the same question 5 minutes before the deadline. Look at the captaincy poll that's what it's for!
      - 'Pages flying.'
      - Overly negative or ungracious posts. Along the lines of 'Captained Mane for his hatrick but Salah and Robbo assists are far from ideal.' or 'Fml Pope got CS, typical, now I only make up 30pts on my rival not 38, so unlucky.'
      - People being overly aggressive, nasty or personal in their posts. Doesn't happen very often thankfully.

When someone asks for a score prediction and the reply will be based on who the respondent has in his team....

6-0 with 5 goals and 1 assist from VVD with 3 of his goals assisted by TAA who will get the other goal. And Allison to get the other 2 assists and save a penalty.

Is that really your prediction? Doubt it

Joe is a self professed 'dullard' another silly word. He is not a type of lad for the craic and so on. Very mechanical and clinical - 'as (pause) well.' Good researcher though.
David is mostly bluster where 50 words will do he says 500. Plus contracts himself three or four times within those 500 words.
Az in fairness to him winds people up now and again. But I feel he lets the pressure get to him, and can crack easy. Andy's analysis is normally good. But he wraps himself in clouds of self doubt, as he is risk adverse.
Best two on the scoutcast by a countrymile are Luke and Neil. Both concise low key, informative, decisive in decisions, but still understated. No fuss.

But none of it like original vibe Granville and Mark had. Just two mates having a laugh and winding each other up.

"Could backfire". Probably the most inane single expression on these here boards. Of course [it] could, anything could, it's kind of the point of the game.

Used as either a disclaimer to a piece of advice given, or a pointless reminder that points are not guaranteed and the value of investment can go down as well as up.

Mostly all of them coined by Mark and Granville and copied blindly by the masses. It is like planet of the apes blindly following the script of the great ape.

Differential, Premium, Bench Fodder, Underlying stats, Eye test, Coverage and so on. I avoid using all those terms on purpose. Because they have spread like a plague now and people seem to think they have to use such terms.

Other ones 'fpl career' it is not a career it is a computer strategy game. 'Fpl managers' are not really managers they are gamers.

Even all the nicknames given to players is copied. Siggy and so on! I get typing abbreviations like KDB and TAA. But does a person have to say KDB and TAA as abbreviations in speech?

Also, phrases like 'fpl expert' no such thing it is not as if you have to earn a badge or cert to be called/or call yourself an expert!

In summary it has gotten silly and why do so many of them have to grow beards?

Don't get me started on X'G's either!

Yes that's today's big question isn't it. I am a bit dissappointed he is going, partly because it is a shame to see Tottenham get him so cheaply but surely Jose is buying him for what he can do and not just going to hold him back from crossing half way.

I guess there will be an article upcoming, and on what it means for the rest of the Wolves defense.

Yes he wants a huge pay raise & he deserves it tbh because he is the best player at Liverpool imo but Liverpool aren’t willing to match his demand. If you check the wage list at Liverpool, you’ll be surprised at what Mané earns compared to the rest.

Once again, he is the best player at Liverpool from an attacking perspective in my opinion!

      1. El Presidente
        • 6 Years

Yep. He is at the same level of Salah this past 2 seasons, and actually won African player of the year ahead of Salah and earns a lot less than him. Its very simple math really.

        1. Party time
          5 years, 11 months ago

Yeah. Even better than Salah if we consider all round performance. Mané is a really versatile footballer. Salah can’t play as a 10/8 imo but Mané can & also he can play as a 9 in attack.

He deserves whatever he is asking for tbh as you said already

Hum.... tricky business. Barcelona is a HUGE brand by itself. That kind of money pays for 3/4 world class players. Yes, not as good as Messi but still 3 or 4 players....

Someone told me a few weeks ago, their financials are in shambles, they have a HUGE wage bill on average/good players and now its clear that all of this is just about money. His 33 and takes almost 40% of total expenditure.... its just too much at this point.

It’s not too much for Messi, especially considering how much of that is paid as tax.

Just to give an example how important Messi is from a business perspective, TV rights holder of La Liga will be holding talks next week on the impairment that will be required on their investment if Messi is to leave La Liga and the amount is expected to exceed 100M Euros.

Actually its even more, because its £120M not euros.

Look, I know all of that, but still. Its a HUGE bill, and it got worse because of the recent tax affair scandal. he is a great player, but I can see why they are trying to offload him tbh. You might say this is not the way they should have done it - and I agree - but it wouldnt be easy anyway. No matter what they do, there is always gonna be people angry about it.

Without disclosing too much, as my work is directly related to this, I can tell you that £120M is not the number as even the company itself hasn’t discussed and determined the extent of financial impact yet (not straightforward due to resale contracts). And they don’t deal with £ anyway, it’s EUR and parent companies have functional currencies CNY and USD. The number I mentioned above was just a minimum expectation.

Anyway, the point is that it doesn’t matter so much that it’s a huge bill because the revenue generated by Messi’s brand has a very significant impact on Barcelona’s revenues that the net cost isn’t as significant as it seems. Therefore performing the cost/benefit analysis on the gross bill doesn’t show the full picture.

I thought about Willian too but it's wait and see for me. Upgrade to Ziyech? Antonio's fixtures put me off him. Aiming to get him for GW12

prefer mitro to antonio to start with, quite a lot of money in defence, which is fine, but how do you plan to get the likes of kdb/bruno/sterling in midfield, might be worth a downgrade or two in defence to leave a bit more money ITB, or downgrade Willian and leave money itb that way

I think only if he plays as the '10' then he could be viable but Kane and Son way ahead atm.

I think so..? I'm only gonna pick him if it looks like Newcastle will play 442. Don't wan't him at wing-back

I was with you until I saw he hasn’t featured in any pre season friendly game. He might not be nailed in the starting xi, I would rather monitor the situation for now

Wasn't even on the bench for their 1st friendly. If he starts then easily worth 5m.
