FULHAM 0-3 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)
  • Assists: Willian x3 (£8.0m)
  • Bonus: Gabriel x3, Willian x2, Lacazette x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) delivered for his legion of FPL owners with a second-half strike in Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 3-0 win at Fulham.

Despite a quiet first half, the premium midfielder curled home a goal very reminiscent of the strike he netted against Liverpool in the Community Shield last month.

Crucially, it was Aubameyang’s switch in position that made his Gameweek 1 outing satisfactory for his 1.5 million captainers. A combination of a goal and yellow card would have made for just five points last season, but reclassified, it afforded him a total of seven, considering Arsenal kept a clean sheet.

There was some concern over Aubameyang’s positioning in the opening period, which saw him operating rather wide and tracking back a lot. Aubameyang’s defensive duties were a far from ideal development, not just because it initially limited his attacking threat but also because it meant he had to make several “forward’s challenges” on the opposition, earning him a first-half yellow card.

Furthermore, Aubameyang’s opening day goal was severely overshadowed by a surprise monster haul from new signing Willian (£8.0m), who is surely set to become the bandwagon midfielder for Gameweek 2.

The former Chelsea man was not even expected to start at Fulham, having missed most of Arsenal’s pre-season campaign. But he came straight into the side, displacing the in-form Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) and registering a hat-trick of assists. It could have been an even bigger haul for Willian, who hit the post with a free-kick in the 27th minute.

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) was another unexpected starter, at the expense of Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m), and he opened the season’s scoring in scruffy style. The Frenchman tapped home after Marek Rodak (£4.5m) saved an effort from Willian.

“[Lacazette] is in my plans. He is a player that I like a lot. But he has Eddie [Nketiah] on his back, or next to him I would say, he’s gonna push him and whoever is in better shape is going to play. The same for the rest of the team.” – Mikel Arteta

“It was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win and have a clean sheet and respect what the coach wanted. Everyone is happy. He wants us to be perfect. We worked in the week for this kind of game. We have a lot of big ambitions. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it is my job. I am really happy [at Arsenal]. It is only the press and other people that say I am not. I want to play and win titles. We want to be aggressive with and without the ball and improve every aspect of our game.” – Alexandre Lacazette

Willian was again the provider at the beginning of the second half, with centre-half debutant Gabriel (£5.0m) heading home his corner.

And he bagged a hat-trick of assists when Aubameyang converted his cross-field pass in the second half, the premium midfielder cutting inside Denis Odoi and curling home.

“With Willian I knew the performance would come straight away.” – Mikel Arteta

As a result, Fantasy managers are targeting Fulham’s defence for attacking returns moving forward. They face Leeds next, who exploited Liverpool’s well-documented ongoing defensive issues at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Despite impressing with the ball in spells, the Cottagers were suspect in defence at Saturday lunch-time. There was too much space afforded to an unmarked Lacazette for the first goal, Gabriel rose unchallenged in the box for the second and Aubameyang found it too easy to cut inside the right-back for the third.

Michael Hector (£4.5m) denied the FPL midfielder a brace by clearing an Aubameyang shot off the line in the 79th minute, as the Cottagers struggled to keep the scoreline respectable.

Reflecting on a tough opening day for his side, Scott Parker told the BBC:

The big lesson today is to understand the fine margins in this division mean you can get punished. At this level you have to be clinical and make teams pay and on the flip side the first time they get in our box and they score. I didn’t like the second half as much. The second goal was a poor goal. At that moment we have to understand how crucial it is and I felt we were a little bit weak and accepted it. When you are a team like us that has come from the Championship you can’t let defeat after defeat really cripple you. We are going to lose more than we win but as a team you have to keep learning and developing. It has been a quick turnaround for us. We have brought players in that will improve us and hopefully there will be more. We need to get them up to speed quickly. Set plays are vitally important. We looked a little accepting. There is a realism here. Teams that struggle in this league are teams that let things get to them. We may lose two or three on the bounce, the important thing is to not let defeats get to you.” – Scott Parker

Arsenal admittedly almost conceded instantly after an early error from Gabriel, who had not played a competitive match since March. The defender allowed an Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.0m) back-pass to go by him, which nearly saw Aboubakar Kamara (£5.0m) get on the scoresheet but the FPL midfielder was denied by quick reactions from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

However, beyond that, it was a relatively routine clean sheet for the Gunners as Arteta continues to transform them at both ends of the field.

While Gabriel will take plenty of headlines for his goal, Arsenal’s shut-out was, in part, earned in no small part by Rob Holding (£4.5m), who operated on the right-hand side of Arteta’s back three and is looking increasingly comfortable there. On the defender and defensive midfield team-mate Mohamed Elneny (unpriced), the Arsenal manager told BT Sport:

“Elneny is a player who has been excellent in training from day one. He’s a player I know well, having played with him. Rob (Holding) is another one is exactly the sort of player we want at the football club. He had a difficult time but he worked really hard in training. He’s playing really well.” – Mikel Arteta

There remains one slight caveat with Arsenal’s defence moving into Gameweek 2. While they were assured at Craven Cottage, Fulham did not offer very much going forward. It was Kamara who started up front for the hosts as popular FPL asset Aleksansdar Mitrovic (£6.0m) found himself on the bench following a slight injury from international duty.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Bryan, Ream, Hector, Odoi; Reed, Cairney; Cavaleiro, Onomah (De Cordova-Reid 75′), Kebano (Anguissa 63′); Kamara (Mitrovic 63′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, Gabriel, Holding; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka (Ceballos 79′), Elneny, Bellerin; Aubameyang, Lacazette (Nketiah 87′), Willian (Pepe 75′).

I knew the risk of going without Salah but that was my plan and I'm sticking by it, yes 40 points hurt but come GW2 I'm getting Martial upfront wihtout hit and with decent midfield line so need to look ahead not dwell on yesterday's game and somewhat lucky hattrick.

Well done to owners\cappers - enjoy your moment of succes but the the season is long and I'm after you 😉

People need to chill a bit - we only half way through GW1. Stop blaming others play own game and focus on the points you can score not the ones you've lost.

    Have a great Sunday everyone.

Great post, and well done for taking it on the chin. You took a risk going without Salah and, unfortunately, it didn't work out for you. But hopefully some of the money saved means you score some points elsewhere.

I also have Martial benched ready for this week so here's hoping!

Good post buddy. You talk sense 🙂

I agree it was slightly lucky hattrick. I was all set n Selling him for Bruno but not now. Will hold him for now. He looked hungry.

Also have Martial coming IN from bench so not going without United attack completely ...

Probably saving FT this GW now

Not to be smug but gjetting martial for free is not a good reason to not own Salah Vs Leeds, this is awful logic. I can also het him for free and still have Salah. You can certainly make an argument of not having Salah but not to the extent of martial ut needs a broader range. Never mind, the most important is to have a flexible and good team so you can respond to things that comes. My plan is risking going without City in gw2 because i ser wolves as not a good fixtures, and auba Vs Kdb in that week at least looks Even or Even slightly bretter for auba. Then gw3 and City gets good arsenal less so. My point is dont beat yourself about lost poibts but also avoid self justification when you miss a big haul from a plater you did not have because of tour plan and strategy. Pens is a part of the game and the last goal was nothing but luck?

Absoulutely that pens are part of the game but how often you get 2 in one game ?

Martial is just a part of my jigsaw, on a whole I'm happy with how my team looks for GW2 and I still have the likes of Werner, Havertz, Alli and James Rodriguez to play this week.

You kind of get what you pay for.
As you implied, the real benefit and blow-out comes with the captaincy, or triple of.
No more luck than normal, and plenty of success for all to come... again, as you implied, it's how you view things. No bias or knee-jerk.
I see success right now in my players playing and showing signs of future scores.

Reflecting on it, I’m quite glad I decided to go no Salah and have Rashford on my bench.

I was always going to cap Auba anyway and if I’d gone down the Salah route, I think I’d be feeling a bit of a head ache coming on.

Maybe I’m clutching at straws a bit 🙂

For me, it wasn't just Salah's hat trick yesterday which (as a captainer) was great; it was how sharp and he involved he looked too. Can't believe people were pencilling in a Salah > Bruno transfer for him and I can't see anyone going through with that now.

I think Salah and Sterling/KDB will revert to being the 2 big hitting captains very soon.

I don't see how Bruno fits into that bracket, or into as many teams, when Martial is there at 9.0 which I reckon will be unbelievable value.

Agree - still think it’s the best short term move but pulling the trigger is so much harder

        Very true.

Never judge a player based on 1 game. Salah is beginning to regain his form and that's a good thing but not every week he's playing at Anfield and got 2 pens.

When Bruno nailed 2 goals and Salah blank in GW2, posts like 'should have pull the Salah > Bruno trigger' will coming like flood but that's the way FPL goes 😀

        Maddison defo out?

Chilwell has been replaced- Fuchs and soy likely paring at the back with Justin/Thomas filling in for Perreira - not the worst defence- just look at palace as an example, too much gets made of this sort of thing

Vardy will get chances, have wba got the minerals?

Don't think Maddison has featured in pre-season so can't see him involved today.

Leicester will dominate possession and have chances but I don't think it'll be a walkover.

Nothing sure in this world but playing the odds of a top team at home beating a bottom team is a reasonable prediction

CRY looked unexpectedly solid at home yesterday considering the amount of injuries but sometimes playing away is a whole different game. Burnley and Sheffield for instance, solid at home, not so much away

Anybody else thinking about going Manchester free on GW2 and then getting them in on GW3 onwards.

I captained Salah so have made a good start with 5 players to come.

I’d really like to save a transfer if possible.

I’ve been following Timo Werner for a long time in the Bundesliga and he looks the business there.

But so did Mkhitaryan and look how he turned out.

Despite that though I’ve taken a punt on Werner due to that opening fixture.

Giving serious consideration to McCarthy > Leno for a hit.
Leno was in and out of my pre season draft and I am kicking myself for not sticking with him.
The odds of breaking even on a hit are favourable giving Arsenal and Sotons respective GW2 fixtures

Actually on reflection a daft idea with Liverpool looming GW3.

Well Leno is 100% nailed now and the defence looks damn good. I'm regretting being on McCarthy - I think he'll be rather 'meh'. Fortunately I've got Meslier to rotate with until I lose McC.

Will be interesting to see if the premium players this season continue to perform better/worse depending on whether they are home or away.

Man City have more away games coming up. Could be a case for going Sterling ahead of KDB.

thank you Christina. It was a toss up who to cap between Aub and the little gem Salah, but I went for salah on the basis he was playing at home. I'd have been gutted if I had it on Aub and missed them points. I'm still thinking of selling salah for gw2 for Bruno. What do you think?

So Ive been on here for hours upon hours prior to the start of the season. Scouring articles and poring over stats in the members area, listening to podcasts, pondering over hot topics. One of the biggest questions of the season has been then 5.5 midfielder pick, which Ive posted countless A/B/C questions about. Yet not one single time did anyone mention Harrison. Is this what I pay for? Absolutely stunned and disappointed by the poor advice I got as I ended up with A Shite Midfielder instead of the pick that should have been obvious if people on here actually knew what theyh were talking about...

not really, if Son is a place holder - whether he hauls or not in GW1 doesn’t change things really and his GW1 points are history and don’t count in GW2
