Aston Villa 1-2 Brighton

  • Goals: Ezri Konsa (£4.7m) | Danny Welbeck (£5.5m), Solly March (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) | Adam Lallana (£6.2m), Pascal Groß (£5.8m)
  • Bonus points: Welbeck x3, March x2, Konsa x1

BARKLEY UP THE WRONG TREE

A second-minute muscle injury to Ross Barkley (£6.0m) proved a massive spanner in the works as Aston Villa’s key Fantasy Premier League assets blanked in Gameweek 9.

The former Everton man has enjoyed some excellent link-up play with Jack Grealish (£7.6m) this season and has arguably been a factor in his impressive form.

Removing Barkley from the picture so soon into Saturday’s meeting with Brighton restricted Grealish’s Fantasy potential and, like Dean Smith, his 40.3% ownership will be hoping for positive news in the next press conference.

“(Barkley) felt his hamstring just two minutes into the game. We’ll have to get it scanned first to see how bad it is. He seems fairly hopeful he won’t be too long but we’ll have to wait and see after this game.” – Dean Smith

Puzzlingly, right-winger Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) was chosen as a straight-swap replacement for Barkley in the number 10 position, a role he could not quite fulfil as well as his predecessor.

The resultant effect was that Grealish eventually, swapped with Traoré, tucking into a more central station, somewhere he is less dangerous than on the left, where he can terrorise full-backs and centre-backs alike with driving, direct runs from the flanks.

Grealish also moved onto the right-hand side a lot in the second half. This shifting around of positions and lack of Barkley’s spark were never going to provide the perfect conditions for a Grealish haul, unfortunately.

Furthermore, in completely unforeseen circumstances, it turns out Traoré is above Grealish in the set-piece pecking order, despite not being a nailed-on starter at the club.

He took a large number of Villa’s corners and provided the assist for Ezri Konsa‘s (£4.7m) second-half goal from a free-kick.

It goes without saying that no Fantasy manager could have seen these events coming ahead of Gameweek 9, so the clutch who captained Grealish should not beat themselves up about that decision.

Moving forward, his owners will be hoping for one of two things. Either that Barkley will not be a long-term absentee or that Smith can find a way of consistently getting the best out of Grealish without him in the team.

DANNY BOY

Danny Welbeck in action for Brighton

Still operating firmly under the Fantasy radar, Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) is slowly becoming Brighton’s chief goal threat.

He may have only started two matches for the Seagulls, but his performances have been promising indeed.

After coming closest to scoring in the Gameweek 8 goalless draw against Burnley, Welbeck was back to lead the Brighton line for the second outing in a row, relegating Neal Maupay (£6.4m) to an attacking midfield support role alongside Adam Lallana (£6.2m).

The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward fulfilled the promise of his full debut for Brighton at Villa Park, using his exceptional pace to get in behind the defence and score the opening goal on Saturday.

Unlikely to lose his starting berth after two energetic performances, at £5.5m Welbeck could prove decent value when Brighton’s turn more appealing with a trip to Fulham in Gameweek 13.

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Cash; McGinn, D Luiz (Hourihane 75′); Grealish, Barkley (B Traoré 5′ | El Ghazi 74′), Trézéguet; Watkins.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-4-2-1): Ryan; Webster, Dunk, White; March, Groß (Molumby 90+6′), Bissouma, Lamptey; Maupay (Burn 80′), Lallana (Veltman 46′); Welbeck.

At what point should the FPL community start ignoring or at least massively downplaying any "Top X" finishes prior to 2016/17 or so? Its a completely different ball game these days.

A top 10k finish in 2012 is probably about par with a top 200k finish in 2019/20. People who have played the game since the early days peddle themselves on twitter/youtube/patreon for their top 25k/10k/5k finishes, even though most often those finishes came back when simply following the FFS articles every week would give you a top10k finish.

Tom has a good enough record to inspire confidence in his ability. He doesnt just have a few top 10k finishes 10 years ago, he has a consistent record that has extended into these last few seasons as well. Very few of the "Pros" can say the same.

I know I'm pulling your Rodney plonker

I agree obviously. It's an interesting discussion. I think whoever said top 20k is new 10k if probably a bit off the mark. Not only have we seen a MASSIVE increase in number of managers but I think it's easier now to be a good manager because we've seen an increase in data communication. I mean, even the BBC ffs has tips on it every week. It's harder now to play the game and be in the dark

              1. Brosstan
                • 11 Years
                5 years, 15 days ago

Yep, its the skill/luck paradox. As the average level of the manager pool increases, the difference in skill between the best and the second best and the best and the average decreases.

This also means that the edge between all the active managers is smaller, which means variance/luck becomes a much more important decider on final ranks.

Most pros seem very ignorant of his concept. Or maybe they are perfectly aware but choose to ignore it publicly as it would be bad for the brand of a "pro" to admit that luck is the biggest factor in the game once you reach a certain level of skill.

Its maths, you'd have to get data of number of players i years past and work out percentages.

But its not that simple as its hard to factor in number of dead teams and teams created for 1gw prizes only.

I think this is actually fair.

I have a bunch of top 10K finishes from pre-2014. And I certainly feel like getting a top 50K score this season would be a better achievement.

FPL pedigree is overrated. An analytical player who understands statistics and the concept of value can come in on their first season and get 1K. They'd be playing just as well if not better than veteran managers. They might even have a leg up because they don't have biases from past seasons.

Zaha, Barkley, TAA I'm looking at you...

It's doubtlessly harder to get the top finishes now. The amount of information out there and the increase in the number of players has made it completely different. Not sure we can dismiss those finishes completely out of hand, but there is a definite difference now.

LR style is make or break as when you go against the group think you either swim to the top or sink to the bottom. He isn't afraid to take a risk.

Some advice here for all players from a 67year old in his 14th season, who has had a finish inside 1k once, 5k 4 times and 50 11 times. Stop berating others, just enjoy the ride and if you have a bad week there can be satisfaction in gaining lost ground back over the following weeks. I realise I ain't ever going to a so called "expert" but I do respect all views on this site. Accept that some people get frustrated and sometimes post comments that reflect this.
Also show some kindness to the mods, article writers and statisic contributors who work on our behalf to try and give us a competitive edge, after all, it's up to us whether we accept that advice.
Last point whilst I'm rambling on, review your end of season targets as your season progresses ( ML, H2H league, OR, or just finishing in front of your mate ) but try and keep the fun going, it's an essential part for me. Good luck to all, I really mean it.

Any rank before the chips were introduced is irrelevant . The game is totally different and even the baps system as changed. Its a different game entirely so they don't count for sh*t

Not that OR matters anyway. It's not impossible for the same player to get lucky in 2 or 3 seasons. Out of so many players there will be players who get lucky regularly. The odds probably say there will be a few out of millions of players . Most of them are doing quite bad this season fwiw

      Think about it positively.

If Mane blanks and gets 2 points, you're only down 9 points. That's not much in the grand scheme of things.

Clearly I made a mistake not getting Bruno this week. Fair enough, I own up to that. Do you think that those of us who haven't got him, should try and get him ASAP? Seems to most times get a cheeky penalty and max BAPs. Would mean that I go with neither Kane, nor Son going forward and I am not too keen on that.

Yes. He has 30 games left and if you value playing a 10 man game over an 11 man game then he is essential

He's a season keeper. Like Salah you will never have to consider him. That is his value, that he is so reliable across fixtures and good value that he reduces the number of players you need to consider to ten. This is a good thing when you only have one transfer per week

      Yes. Get the penalty takers!

      Vardy, Kane, Fernandes, Salah.

Is it a coincidence that 4 of the Top 6 scoring players are penalty takers.

C.Wilson not far off either and he is another penalty taker.

I think Son out is a decent ahout - I am planning it next week. But I also think we should factor in Salah (if back) vs the City mids. And the fixtures are golden - City will score well but maybe less well than some expect. Theyve been really poor this season

This for -8. Not shy on taking hits and I want to take advantage of strong fixtures for City and Leicester

    1. Robbo ---> A. Castagne or B. Cancelo

Sky players - I'm looking for advice!

My only captain options today are Dallas and Gabriel. I am thinking of accelerating a planned Son - Vardy move to today and then to captain Vardy. Thoughts? I'd like Vardy by next Monday for the Fulham game and he will become Salah again at some point.

Going Rashford over Bruno when I had the funds to go Bruno 3 weeks ago is looking stupider by the day.

2,5,3 for Rash vs 2,17,11 for Bruno. + the captaincy for this week. Such basic mistakes already. I did my homework before the season and knew that I wanted Bruno this year and yet all it took was a CL hat-trick by Rashford for me to throw away the plan and get him in instead.

And bizarrely this is not even my worst mistake. Getting rid of Son before the diagnosis from Mourinho in GW4 was even worse.

What has been your worst mistake so far this season?

Oh, taking Kane out for a hit after gw1.

Then compounding it by taking fernandes and Wilson in a gw3 wildcard (the 2 players I put in for the hit the week before).

Only just starting to claw it back.

Think my worst mistake was at the very start going for Bruno on the bench GW1, instead of having Salah. Also selling Son after GW1 blank prior to his 24pt haul.

Dropping Son for Martial hours before GW1 in a foolish last minute decision after backing second season Jose for ages in preseason.
