Football is back and we could hardly have asked for a better start from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective.

Goals were flying in all over the place, so I figured I’d start the week with a good stats dive into the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

WHICH PLAYERS CAUGHT THE EYE?

In terms of expected goal involvement (xGI), Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was the stand-out performer of the round with a 0.58 higher total than second-placed Christian Norgaard (£5.0m).

However, it is worth noting that Antonio’s non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG) total was just 0.70, and as a result, he ranks eighth in that specific metric.

No player was afforded more big chances (three) than the Hammers’ frontman, but having missed his penalty he may no longer be the designated taker moving forward.

A popular target when the game launched, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) ranks third for non-pen xG (0.94) and no player across all positions took more shots in the box than the Toffees’ striker in Gameweek 1 (five).

Only Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) created more chances than Paul Pogba‘s (£7.6m) five. However, just one of the Frenchman’s five attempted assists was a big chance created and he also fluffed a golden opportunity when put through on goal in the first half.

Adama Traore (£6.0m) really should have got on the scoresheet, too. The pacy winger took four shots in the box and was the biggest xG underperformer (0.81) of the Gameweek. He’s certainly one to monitor if he is going to be used in a similar role by Bruno Lage going forward.

Said Benrahma (6.0m) was a popular pick on the Fantasy Football Scout boards and the Algerian notched an xGI total of 0.51, which does not rank in the top 25 across all positions. He scored from his only shot on target, while the sole chance he created was converted, so he is one to monitor as well.

WHICH PLAYERS NUMBERS ARE CONCERNING?

That’s all for now! We will be delving deeper into this data and more on The FPL Wire tomorrow. All my custom stats tables used in the article can be accessed in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, and I’ve linked them below for convenience:

    Sanchez | Fodder
    Digne Shaw Targett*
    Salah Bruno Son Jota Fraser
    Antonio Toney
    ¦ Ayling White Scarlett

You could downgrade him to a Brighton defender- they rotate well with Leeds side can play Ayling then bring in Brighton player when Leeds have a tough game. Would then give you 1 million to upgrade Fraser

Don’t remember him doing a lot but I wouldn’t base anything on that match - Leeds were absolutely horrific.

I'm wondering if that's just because they start the season like that though? And they were missing two of their most important players in defensive positions.

They could have conceded plenty - Arsenal were simply incompetent and that stadium was rocking - wouldn't base anything on the basis of that one match.

Chances are they will be open and concede plenty. It's how they roll.

Could well stay up but don't see cs

Can someone explain how Chelsea's right side line up now please.

Is chalobah at the right of a back 3 with James/Azp in front ?

Or is Azp going to move back there.

    4. MJF

Possibly when things settle down. I reckon Stones and Shaw are both 0.5 underpriced. Those two, TAA and a Chelsea defender could make a fantastic back four.

It's definitely an option. I've gone big in midfield though so can't afford to go too crazy at the back.

      TAA, Reguilon, Tsimikas (Ayling, Livramento)

    8. Pacer.
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 14 days ago

Problem with very big at the back is that you'll never captain them, 5.5s offer slightly better p/£m/game and have several replacements at that pricepoint. The difference between a Robbo/vvd/TAA and a 5.5m is likely worst case scenario 20 points, best case 50 points. Would rather be playing with that 2m in midfield and up front. I think it buys more invested in rotating attackers and captain choices

I think at the beginning of the season defenders clean sheets are more predictable than your 4th midfielders goals or assists. Plus your defender can have individual points too. I always start my season with 4 at the back.

      1. One Man
        • 10 Years

Same. I’ve gone all out in defence but had to downgrade Salah to Son in order to do so, still have Bruno and 3 strikers of 8/7.5m range.

I feel like I need to get rid but also have 0 ITB so cannot get any other city other than Torres who I feel is a poor choice and may not play anyway.

Raphinha gabe the ball away at and looked rusty but still should have scored and will come god against other teams. Worry is with Brazil game and time he will miss.

I decided to start Bruno-less (although somehow still managed a decent score). Have Greenwood and thinking a Pogba double up might be best way to combat Bruno v Southampton but wondering if just worth holding Havertz against Arsenal?

    (I have TAA)
    a) White > Ayling and bench Tsamikas
    b) Play Tsamikas and bench White

uh I don't know why on earth you would spend a transfer on this. Just save it and play Tsimikas obviously... I'd play him anyway over Ayling?

TM what’s the highest safety score so far? 71 seems like it could be a contender?

Had a 66 in GW1 two seasons ago.
Double GWs have crazy safety scores as well as later in the season.

            Yes, DGWs can be crazy.

Tell me, why do you feel you need a city player?

You can lay back and get comfortable before you answer my question, if you feel that will help you.

As an entity / entire team, I completely agree.

My concern with city assets is i don’t get rewarded if the team wins, only if my player racks up good individual stats - assuming he even gets game time.

If they got hit by a large number of injuries there’s plenty of players I’d love to own. But I’m currently steering clear.

If I had a City asset I would hold them for Norwich but I wouldn't be looking to transfer one in. Expect Pep to make a bunch of changes.

    What could go wrong with:

GW3: Salah to Son for free
GW4: barnes to Salah, funded by money ITB and probably Toney to 4.5

I don’t usually like the Hokey Cokey with premiums but it’s Chelsea and I don’t have any issues to address at the moment

With Gundo crocked, how does Gundo + Barnes > Grealish + Benrahma for -4 sound? Gives me -

    Sanchez
    TAA - Cash - Tsimikas
    Salah - Bruno - Grealish - Greenwood - Benrahma
    Ings - Antonio

    Foster - White - Livramento - Scarlett

Are White owners keeping him - or did his / arsenals defensive unit’s performance put you off?

One game only etc etc but still wondering what others are thinking.

    (Yes I know he’s probably your 4th : 5th defender)

You shouldnt be wasting transfers on defenders let alone benched ones in the first few weeks. If Arsenal are bad, let him rot on the bench until you wildcard

I think I generally agree with you (obviously there will be exceptions for some). And I don’t currently plan to make any changes to my own team.

But I’m still interested in what others are doing.

Was on the bench for this week, will be on the bench next two weeks - then I think he's playable as Arsenal have decent fixtures and he should be decent for bonus due to passes. Still think Arsenal defense is fine, was decent last season, if only because Arteta sucks the creativity out of his side and plays far too conservatively.

bruNO gang what is your plan for the coming weeks?

Cave and get Bruno in (especially if he bags another double digits against Soto) or hold till week 7 when the fixtures turn for Chelsea to get Lukaku in?

Getting Lukaku in either this week or GW4, have Salah and Son. Figured a way I can get Sancho in too for their last few decent games before their bad fixture run but I'll see how he looks first

Ok based on some good advise here I’ve tweaked it to this. Any issues now?

    Sanchez/ Steele

Shaw Cresswell Tsimikas / Digne 4.0

Raphinha Salah Bruno Pogba / Biss

    Antonio Lukaku Dennis

Anyone else find their players are coming from different teams over recent seasons?

Eg it used to be a struggle to pick which 3 city to get. Recently I have only 1 city at the most. Often zero like now.

Whereas I currently have 3 villa players and 3 West Ham!

Last year it was lots of Leeds and others.

I mean, pool still provide a picking challenge, but spme of the larger teams have huge squads now, and that means a lot of their players get rotated more than ever. Or so it feels.

    …or is it just me?!
