FPL Q&A: Keep or sell Haaland? Chilwell in, Estupinan out?

Here, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar answers some of the week’s most-asked FPL questions.

It’s always a tricky part of the season when there are blanks and doubles around. As we have seen in previous weeks, quantity is not always better than quality.

There are no obvious ‘yes or no’ answers in this week’s Q&A but what I will attempt to do is present the pros and cons of each decision and where I am currently leaning. My rank goals and current rank position will obviously be different from yours, so weigh these up accordingly.

Q: Erling Haaland out for Ollie Watkins or Kai Havertz? The plan will be bring him back for Ivan Toney in Gameweek 30. (via @Fpl__United)

FPL Gameweek 21 Scout Picks: ...

A: This is the biggest question of the week, really, and I am writing this after just watching highlights of Erling Haaland (£12.1m) scoring his fifth hat-trick this season at the Etihad. His credentials do not need further extolling; we are all aware of the monster scores he can rack up, especially in home matches. Manchester City do not have a fixture this week but play Liverpool at the Etihad in Gameweek 29, the very first kick-off post the international break. Haaland will very likely play 90 minutes and given how leaky Liverpool have been on their travels, the potential for him to score a hat-trick or even more is very much there. We will all likely want him back in Gameweek 30 anyway, so it is also an extra transfer and an additional outlay of at least £0.3m to consider.

Many of us, myself included, are looking to bring in Ollie Watkins (£7.4m) for him this week. The Aston Villa forward faces Bournemouth in Gameweek 28, doubles in Gameweek 29 with an attractive fixture away to Leicester, and plays Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 30. Watkins’ numbers have been great, too: over the last six Gameweeks, he has averaged 0.8 goals, 7.0 FPL points and 1.2 big chances per match.

Could Haaland score more than Watkins in one game instead of three? Yes, very much so. The reverse is possible, as well, and I think the decision really depends on where you are rank wise and where you want to be. Haaland’s ‘effective ownership’ (EO) will still be very high, close to 100% in Gameweek 29, so if you do own him and won’t captain him, you are not going to be gaining much. If you do hold, though, the possibility of taking a major rank hit reduces if he goes big.

Just a quick note: there were some questions on Kai Havertz (£7.5m) vs Watkins and I think the latter is a better pick as he is more of an out-an-out goalscorer and a talisman. Havertz often drops deep to link up play and can have a great game without notching FPL returns.

So this really does depend on your risk appetite. I don’t think any of us would really be entertaining the idea of selling Haaland if he didn’t blank this week. Many FPL managers seem intent on holding their Brighton midfielders over the Norwegian because the Seagulls have a double in Gameweek 29, so perhaps we should be looking at selling one this week and buying back after the international break instead? The problem is, of course, that bar James Maddison (£8.1m) and the Arsenal contingent, there is a real dearth of midfield options in Gameweek 28 and Watkins does have the potential to deliver big at home to Bournemouth, so there is upside there to chase. Watkins isn’t just for the next two weeks either, as Villa have a great run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks – so it will likely be Ivan Toney (£7.8m) making way for most of us in Gameweek 30, not Watkins.

I am currently sitting at about 200k, so holding rank is no good for me. I will likely be making the move from Haaland to Watkins and hiding behind the couch for the first kick-off of Gameweek 29.

Q: Ben Chilwell is a popular option in FPL. Do we replace Pervis Estupinan with a blank this week but a few Double Gameweeks to come or a Brentford defender with no blank but a tricky Double Gameweek 29? Selling Estupinan also opens up the option of tripling up on Brighton midfielders after the international break. (via @alexwaterbaby)

FPL Gameweek 15 differentials: Estupinan among three budget picks

A: Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) has played a significant part in Chelsea’s recent goals: he assisted Wesley Fofana’s (£4.3m) header against Leeds, set up Raheem Sterling (£9.7m) for the first goal against Borussia Dortmund, won the penalty for the second goal against the German outfit, and scored the opener against Leicester City. Having Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) as cover at left centre-back has given him license to bomb forward and fitness wise, he looks to be ahead of Reece James (£5.8m). He’s a possible captaincy option this week and has a double in Gameweek 29. Rotation might be a factor in Gameweeks 30 and 31 with the UEFA Champions League around but that’s another discussion altogether and dependent on the scheduling and opponents in Europe, which we do not know yet. Bringing him in for Gameweek 28 is a move that many FPL managers, including me, are considering. The question is now who for.

With Arsenal and Newcastle defenders having a fixture with decent clean sheet potential this week, they are an obvious keep. The choice for most of our squads therefore comes down to a Brentford or Brighton defender. The obvious decision would be to sell the one without a fixture (Brighton) but it is not as clear-cut a decision as it appears at first glance.

Let’s look at the Brentford defence first. The Bees have conceded 13 goals in 13 home matches this season and have kept five clean sheets. On the road, they have conceded 20 goals in 12 matches and have recorded just three shut-outs. Leicester have scored 21 goals in 13 away matches, with only Manchester City, Brighton (24 each) and Arsenal (28) scoring more. So on the face of it, the Gameweek 28 fixture against Leicester is not a ‘banker’ clean sheet for Brentford by any means, but it is still possible given how good the Bees are at home. Their Gameweek 29 double consists of away games against Brighton and Man Utd, who are both strong on their own patch. With the Bees’ poor away defensive record, clean sheets look possible, but unlikely. The mitigating factor here if you own someone like Rico Henry (£4.5m) is that Brentford might play 3-5-2 in those away games, which heightens his appeal a bit. In fact, Henry is ranked third for expected goal involvement (xGI, 1.78) amongst defenders over the last six matches:

Pervis Estupinan’s (£4.8m) blank against Leeds was the only time over Brighton’s last seven matches that he failed to record a return. His returns in the six matches prior read 6, 8, 7, 6, 9 and 6 – that’s an average of 7.0 points per game. The underlying numbers are strong as well: no defender has managed more assists (three) over the last six matches, with only Robertson (10), Shaw (11), Alexander-Arnold (12) and Trippier (21) creating more chances than his nine:

As has been the theme of recent weeks, quality has prevailed over quantity in this Q&A article. I could only answer three questions but tried to go into them in as much detail as possible so you can make the best decision for your team.

There are no right or wrong answers this week. If this game was as straightforward as that, what would be the point of playing?

Hope you enjoyed it, we will be discussing these dilemmas and more in detail on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire. You can check it out when it airs on Thursday here.

Who played the most minutes over the March international break?

Saka vs Bournemouth was a blank despite 3 goals conceded by Bou, Salah blanked against them, but no, Watkins is shoo-in to score 🙂

If I do Estup > Chilwell and Salah > Madders for a -4 this week? It gives me 11 for GW28 but also an extra couple of doublers for BB29, could then use my FT in 29 to swap Zinchenko to Shaw for an extra doubler.. also gives me more than enough money left in the bank to bring Haaland back in post 29.

    Thoughts?

It doesn't give you an extra couple of doublers, because the two you are selling also have a dgw in 29.

    UCL Fantasy Q:

I'm in the luxurious position of doing a bit too well this recent round (although I did decide not to swap the captaincy from Mario to Haaland so I guess you can't have it all).

Pick three to play tonight player from the following list of five:

Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia, Di Lorenzo, Vinicius Jr, Carvajal

If you want to pick a fourth, or all five, they'd need to score more than 6 points to beat the player(s) I'd have to substitute out. I already have 3 defenders points banked so you don't need to pick a defender either.

I think I'll just wait for the team news and then go Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia and Vinicius Jr but be interested to hear if anyone would do anything different?

Haaland > Kane (c) is one of my FT's this week, which gives me 10 players, but who for the other?

    a) March > Maddison - will reverse this transfer for DGW29
    b) Estu > Chilwell - may or may not reverse
    c) save FT, play 10, so I have 2FT's for DGW29

White, Saka, Martinelli and Kane my only Single GW players in DGW29 - but will BB and save a FT if I can.

The article suggests that Haaland's EO would be close to 100%, but would the top 100k say EO really be that high? Doubt many would captain him in a large double game week and are regular sales happening, and would think it would be more like 75% at most.

I should have said among active users - the same would apply I would have thought that people are taking out Haaland and not captaining him.

Naturally the dead teams will be have the Haaland auto captain but would expect such teams to be well down the rank into the millions (albeit some dead times do manage to do well)

    Scenario:

Replacing any player with only 1x game over 28-29 to a "realisticly-expected-starter-and-at-least-one-return"-player who has 3x games over the same period.

^Does this actually justify limitless transfers (and hits) up to the point of fielding 11 in 28?

Certainly not crazy to think Forest will score given their home record. I would stick with Trippier long-term, but I am kind of thinking about doubling up on Chilwell & James. Not sure if I'd recommend it unless you have good cover for James & are chasing hard, but it could pay off big.

March and Henry double in 29, and Henry has a game in 28. I would look to replace those with only 1x game over 28/29 first and foremost.

And would def get in Chilwell and Maddison if it would fit what I first mentioned. But not for hits vs. already starters in 28 or doublers in 29.

    For DGW 29:

    A. Estupinan Maddison Watkins

    B. Chilwell Salah Watkins

    C. Chilwell Salah Maddison

    Hi everyone,
I'm chasing points here, what to do with this side
Should I used my FH or wildcard?
    Kepa
    Estupinan | White | Trips
    Mitoma| Rash | Salah | Martinelli
    Kane | Toney | Haaland

    Ward, Andreas, Ake, Tarkowski

I have all my chips so far 0.3 ITB

      Kepa
      Tark-White-Trip
      Mart
      Kane-Toney

This would be your current team for 28, I guess. 7 starters. If 2fts then I think it's fair to take a hit to get in 3 x additional starters in 28+DGWs 29. Then you have 10 starters 28 which is fine! If you need another hit to field 10, then maybe FH or WC is OK.

    Hey everyone

A lot of focus in articles and comments on Forwards and Defenders for the next two GWs. Fewer looking at midfielders.

Curious what the consensus is out there on the best midfielders who play in GW28 and double in GW29.

Excluding all the v highly owned assets...

    Thoughts on these (and others)?

    Maddison | 8.1 (GW28: bre; GW29: cry & AST)
    Gibbs-White | 5.5 (GW28: NEW; GW29: WOL & lee)
    Billing | 5.1 (GW28: ast; GW29: FUL & BRI)
    Almiron | 5.4 (GW28: nfo; GW29: MNU & wha)
    Harrison | 5.7 (GW28: wol; GW29: ars & NFO)

I think Maddison stands out of all the options. Set piece duty and so on, and basically proven most explosive of the bunch. But he's also more expensive. Buendia could also be in that mix, I guess.

If money no problem AND internal conflicts in the doubles in 29 is no problem, then I would def choose Maddison. The rest of the bunch = coin toss. I would maybe choose the one with the plummest fixtures in 30/31 (if not WC 30).

Maddison, Billing and Almiron are certain good picks I think. MGW I'm not convinced by (as a footballer in general), and not sure if Harrison is nailed?

I am considering Gibbs-White myself, good DGW 29 fixtures and a fixture in 28. Can easily sit on the bench after that if needs be as well

I plan to bench boost gw29, what transfer(s) would you make here?

    A) Salah -> Maddison
    B) Haaland -> Havertz
    C) Haaland -> Kane
    C) Save

    Raya
    Chilwell Zinchenko Kilman Tarkowski
    Salah* Saka Martinelli
    Haaland* Toney Watkins

    Pickford Rashford* Mitoma* Estupinan*

There is a forward to pick that isn't Havertz or Watkins.

Isak. I only have 1 Newcastle player and I'm looking to add another ahead of the potential DGW in 30/31 vs Brighton. This would get you ahead of the game but is it too early? Isak is quality and the fixtures make sense - game in 28, double in 29 and then a probable extra double in 31.

What about the competition vs. Wilson? If 6 x games over 4 x gws, then I smell benching a couple of times. A bit of a gamble to go Isak, but could pay off.

I think he's better than Wilson when fit. But yeah you're right, it's definitely a gamble. Doubtful he'll start all of the next 4 games.

Unless one of them is injured (and you can’t rule this out with either) he and Wilson will share minutes. He played really well at the weekend but still made way before 70 mins. Howe has also talked a lot about how he’s not ready to play 90.

Where does your confidence on the extra DGW being 30/31 come from? I’ve seen this about a lot but surely if they were going to do that it would be arranged by now?

Having ditched Almiron last week I too only have one Newcastle (Trippier). I'm not convinced the toon will sustain their form through the remainder of the season. For me they've over achieved and I can see them dropping off in the run in......so Isak is a no from me.

Not nailed, rotated even if he starts. No really appealing upcoming fixtures, including the confirmed double and a "possible" extra double (speculative). 4 of the confirmed next 5 fixtures away from home. Team has scored 4 goals in the last 6 games.

Different for the sake of being different.

In theory it makes sense to transfer upto 4 blank GW players out and bring in 4 players with GW28 and DGW29 i.e. 1 match vs 3 matches for a -12 presuming 1FT.

    1 blank plus 1 match for 4 players = say 2pts each = 8pts
1 match plus 2 matches for 4 players = say 2pts each = 24pts less a 12pt hit = 12pts. So you're still 4pts up even if the payers all only score 2pts average. Break even is a player with 1.67pts average per game.

The average breakeven point obviously changes if you take more/less hits or have 2FT's. But it will still be a low breakeven point when you have 3 games vs 1 game

Not as simple as 1 player with 3 fixtures. You need to add factor in the quality of the player, the team they play for and the opponents.

Which is exactly my point about looking at the points you expect the replacements to get. It's not a very high bar at 1.67pts each per game.

On a WC and weighing up whether to stick with my Arsenal midfield combo of Martinelli and Saka. Martinelli has served me very well this season (having held when many sold) and he is a fun player to own. Saka on the other hand is on a bit of a barren run and I am tempted to ditch him in favour of Odegaard (for a double up with Martinelli). What do we think guys?

I've got the same issue, not sure which 2 of that 3 to pick. I'm still leaning towards saka due to the fact he takes penalties and sometimes corners. i think it's then a flip of a coin for the other 2

You're probably right, unless team value is a reason to ditch him the smart money is still on keeping him.

I think "barren run" is a bit of an overstatement. Its 2 blanks - none of the main 3 mids returned v BOU, and Saka was clearly crusing through the last game after Fulham gave away those soft early goals. I haven't changed my mind about him

Not to forget, this is also bad for the few Harrison owners.

And I guess this would have even had an impact on bonus points, maybe no extra for Mitoma.

But rules are rules and decision are often unfair, see:
      - VAR decisions all season long,
      - given Foden "goal" last weekend
      - matches postponed due to weather / queen after deadline
      - server crash before deadline,
      - (etc.)

      So..Let's move on.

Absolute nonsense. There's enough actual random events in the game already without fpl choosing to ignore reality, and it is a choice, before people start prattling on about the rule, their rule
