Weird signing to be honest. Why spend what is assumingly a big chuck of the transfer budget on a goalkeeper to provide competition for your current goalkeeper who has proven himself to be very good?

You'd think, but data doesn't tell you everything. A good manager can see when a player has reached their potential and doesn't have the capacity to make a step up. Maybe Kompany has decided Muric isn't PL quality, whereas Trafford is.

True but it certainly is a big kick in the teeth for Arijanet Muric, a full international GK who just won the Championship conceding only 31 goals all season, being replaced by an u21 GK who played at a lower level.

Spoke to a lot of Burnley fans last year who were less than impressed with Muric. In fantasy world terms the stats look good but doesn't pass the eye test.

IMHO definitely and absolutely. I would rather keep a doubt about Son being nailed on the other flank, as I highly rate Manor Solomon both as a LW in general, and a LW for a Postecoglou team's style of attacking.

Solomon is not in the same league as Son. I watched him at Fulham last season and he was an impact player at best. He was a squad player for Fulham and will be the same for Spurs. Think Moura.

I don’t think so. As I understand it, Matt Targett was first choice LB before he got injured, so I’d assume he’ll be providing competition again this season. Burn did very well last year but it’s not his natural position. Newcastle fans please correct me if I’m wrong.

Burn was fantastic as far as I know.. he was very close to England call up as well I think. Isn't Targett old now? And perhaps they're signing Livramento so he might be competition (I think he can play both RB and LB)

      Same here mate.
      I posted this yesterday.
      What are your thoughts…?

I’ve been thinking, as my team is looking set to go, that FPL could introduce a ‘Lock and Load’ chip.

The idea being that if you confirm your team and ‘Lock and Load’ it before say, 1 week and don’t touch it, you start with 10pts.

This would throw up some interesting quandaries for us engaged players.

What down to the cap, vc & bench - could be interesting

Would be good to have a selection of chips that you can pick 3 from and then everyone isn’t necessarily following the same strategy

It was just for GWs1 and 2. My transfers for GWs 3, 4 and 5 would have got rid. Anyway, it was a plan destined for the bin within hours, regardless of the friendly. I'm still committed to a cheap defence, so I've restored 2 other 4.5 defenders to accompany Estu.

Interesting strategy, don’t disagree the value is better spent further forwards

I’m targeting price points and fixtures but with replacements in mind

                Like Foden > Maddison/sterling

                Nkunku > Nunez/gakpo

                Etsu/gabs > porro

I've planned my half-season out thus:

All 5 GW1 defenders to be replaced between GWs3-19 according to fixture runs. Form will modify the plan once data is gathered.
My "Power 7" could theoretically play all 19 GWs, but I expect to make sideways transfers and bring in cheaper options once the picture becomes clearer (like your suggestions). Starting with a Big 7 seems a safer option than punting on non-certainties. The likes of Salah and Trent could wreck that plan, though.

Burnley also signed Lawrence Vigouroux from Leyton Orient who concede the least goals in League Two last season.
So they currently own the goalkeepers who conceded the least goals in the Championship, League One and League Two in 2022/23!

So he never said he will be eased in and isn't nailed then. Next time, I suggest you just provide the actual quote so that others can make an assessment instead of giving your own assessment dressed up as fact?

The full quotes are in the article I linked to:

"I think when Chelsea sign a player like him it's because they detect something important in quality and talent," Pochettino said.

"He is a big talent, he needs time to adapt to the new club, the Premier League.

"He is young also, we need to help him to develop and evolve and be an important player for Chelsea."

Nkunku, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig for £52m last month, has now scored in both pre-season games.

Asked if Nkunku and Jackson, who have alternated in the number nine role, could start together, Pochettino said: "For sure, we will arrive in the next few games at the possibility to play them together.

"It is that the circumstance of the physical condition mean we need to use both to share the minutes."

Your first quote is irrelevant to your assessment and a positive. The second and third quote is what any manager would say about a young new player coming to a new team and league, and is fairly obvious. Same applies to Nkunku. The last two quotes are also very obvious considering they have no other viable strikers and they are both not match fit hence currently sharing striker minutes, but no indication that will continue. My assessment is completely different to yours.

To be fair, the quotes talk about being young and developing and evolving. Maybe he starts, maybe he won’t, there is definitely some uncertainty. 1) I like both, but watching today's Man City squad I see Ake has far less competition to clinch a place. Anyhow, last year the situation was similar, and in fact no City defender started more than 24 times out of 38! Could well happen again.
      2) Don't know, sorry.

Does Az post here much anymore? I know he's not on Twitter per se this season. Just listing to the Az/Sam flirtathon on Spotify.

He said he was unsure of how to say Gvardiol. To start, Guardiola and Gvardiol are the same surname in different languages, as are Pep & Joško. Pep is basically signing himself.

Croatian vowels sound like Irish ones when fadas are involved: á = a, é = e, etc. í will sound like a classic 'e' in English. So Gvard as if Guard, but it's Martin Sheen from Team America, long 'a' - Gvard - e - ol (old minus the 'd')

      Some interesting points:

      - Playing out from the back was much better and will only improve with Onana.
      - Bruno playing practically second striker again, mainly due to Arsenal’s midfield leaving gaps everywhere (Havertz especially).
      - Sancho false 9, we’ve seen Ten Hag do this with Tadic so worth keeping an eye on. Took his goal well.
      - Based on these performances, WanBissaka is miles clear of Dalot.

Mount was brought in to replace Christian Eriksen in CM and play alongside Casemiro. He brings energy and pressing in the midfield that Eriksen cant do. We saw this last night.

I'd expect Eriksen to play more as the 10 than Mount.

I know it's only preseason and games are merely for fitness purposes but if United continue to have the same impressive performances, more so in the pressing and cleansheet areas, then I am doubling on their defence for sure come the beginning of the season.

Will probably go Onana and Shaw, but if AWB continues to be first choice come the start of the season, may swap Onana for him.

Also impressed by Jackson, he looks like the striker who will have a great assist potential to the scoring one, which will only strengthen his appeal.

To Arsenal, I like the fact that we lost yesterday, this will be a small wake up call for Arteta and his players. They need to gel quicker, play aggressive football and cut off mistakes. Still think Havertz would be more of a disappointment than a success, just don't rate him. Arteta has brought himself a headache with buying him for that money, but I will still give him at least 10 games before making a stronger opinion on him. Otherwise impressed with Timber, he is rapid and will be a very good player.

Yeah I'm currently on Onana and AWB. Don't think AWB comes on if he doesn't start so safe pick for 4.5. Ashley Young is also in my team now lol. Let's see if he carries on playing on the wing in preseason.

      1. ZeBestee
        • 11 Years

Yeah, we need to see more of every team though. So far, United defence and Chelsea attack have been interesting. Pedro of Brighton also looked very impressive with pace and quick feet but he will still share minutes with likes of Welbeck, Undav and Ferguson. Mitoma still the safest and clear of them all.

        1. Zimo
          • 7 Years

I'm steering clear of Brighton attack personally. Way too many players there. Not sure even Mitoma is safe.

Can't see anyone taking Mitoma's place in the left wing. He may get the odd subs here and there because of EL but he plays 95+% of the PL games imo.

Think the issue is that ETH said himself towards the end of last season that he'll decide between AWB and Dalot based on what he thinks the team needs in each game on that side so there should be rotation. But AWB did end the season quite well

I quite like what I've seen of Hojlund in the Denmark team. We've been sorely missing a striker that lunges at chances in the box like that. He's got good holdup play to bring in Rashford and Bruno in goalscoring chances and kids got strength and speed too.

Bruno got more assists than Odegaard last season despite playing further back. He’s also on pens and looks to be playing second striker again (based on preseason) so will probably score more than him too.

He was bubbling away before his injury. Could have a big season under a manager very willing to give anyone in the squad a try. He's a risk but he isn't a 2 point a game CDM merchant.

I think the user here has very much misinterpreted what I wrote, Evilfuk. This is what was actually written:

"Jakub Moder (£4.5m) spent all of 2022/23 on the sidelines with a serious knee injury but had already returned to training by the end of the last campaign, so he will get a chance to catch the eye of ‘new’ boss Roberto De Zerbi for the first time this summer. Occasionally deployed as a more advanced central midfielder under Graham Potter, he managed to have 28 shots without success in 2021/22."

So definitely not a recommendation yet.

Currently, as Natedog mentions above, Nakamba is probably the 'safest' £4.5m - but he's no Andreas, he'll likely only get you appearance points. Ahamada (mentioned by Tasty Jerk) is one to watch but only that: he's been playing out wide, not in his usual position, due to Palace being down Zaha (out of contract) and Olise (injured). He's done well, by all accounts, but I'd urge a bit more caution till we've seen more friendlies/transfer activity/injury updates.

I can see myself wanting three playing Magpies sometime around the fixture swing.

    BREAKING:

KDB is fit and on the bench.

He could make a massive difference to our ranks in the first 4 gameweeks when City don't rotate.

Boosts Haaland's appeal. Those two had a great connection.

I know about the Foden excitement, though I think Cole Palmer, 5m, could be set for a break out season.

Won’t be playing for City if he does

Foden excitement tempered by the fact that KDB is seemingly fit?

With Grealish off the pitch stuff this summer, surely Foden would be first choice on either wing?

I think Alvarez will find a spot on the right wing

Just because he’s had a few beers Grealish won’t be playing after he had his best season?

Gone very rogue with a 4-3-3 but a bit nervy with how the bench is - who would you sacrifice to improve slightly?

    Ederson
    TAA Zinchenko AWB Udogie
    Bruno Son Foden
    Haaland Jesus Nkunku

    Areola Cash Sarabia Ahamada

Palace are trying to sign AWB. One to monitor.

    Re: Arsenal

Will Timber go RB and support/overlap Saka, who will be on the right of a front three?
Will White go LB to shore up defence because Zinchenko is not as firm defensively as White?
I assume Arteta has bought Timber to be a fully-fledged RB, zooming forwards to support attacks?

It's also a possibility ARS will sometimes switch to a 5-3-2 (or 3-5-2) with White as RCB (or Kiwior as a LCB), Timber as a RWB, ZInchenko (or even White) on the other flank, Rice, Partey and Havertz behind Jesus and Saka.
