ive watched 15-20 fpl youtubers and not a single person has haaland in their first draft, am i being stupid here thinking it just makes much more sense starting with him as its very easy to just take him out after a few weeks if he doesnt perform? then you have loads of money to do whatever with, but if he starts the first few games and scores 6 goals EVERYONE will be desperate to get him in and how on earth are they going to get a 15m player in once the season starts without using wildcard

Why do you need a WC to get him in? two transfers are enough, you just won't have Salah anymore. It's only an issue if you want to keep him aswell.

I agree that it’s probably safer to start with him and be able to pivot elsewhere after the Ipswich game if needed. But wouldn’t argue going without is wrong either.

That’s all of their thinking for now, but might change the closer we get to the deadline if Haaland bangs a few goals in preseason and his % ownership shoots up.

Take the satisfaction of him as a differential if you think he’s an option you don’t want to go without.

Everyone going no Haaland, until he scores a brace in GW1 then everyone will scramble to get him putting his price up.

I find an interesting Reddit post yesterday about people discussing how many clean sheets they had last season roughly half way through.

There was quite a lot of replies to the post so you could draw some fairly accurate conclusions from it.

I’d say on average people got clean sheets approximately 20% of the time. If you did very well it could be up to 30% or just over. But there was no one higher than that and very few got a percentage close to 30%. Some did much worse with a percentage around 15%.

All of this is fairly obvious without in depth research. But it’s still interesting to see that in reality, you are probably only getting a CS about 20%, maybe 25% of the time.

This of course does not take into account attacking returns, but I think some people are spending way too much on defense for a very bad return.

It's even worse now with the change in baps doing defenders no favours. I'm on 5x4.5m defenders.

This is how I’m setting up too. Enables good mix of top defensive teams from last season. Potential to swap Gvardiol to Saliba once Arsenal’s fixtures soften. Only omission is TAA.

Yep. If I remember correctly as well, there’s few clean sheets to be had early in the season. Remember how everyone hated Pickford as he started off terrible then went world class lol.

Second half of the season teams tighten up much more when they have the chance for a good finish or need to save themselves from relegation.

So yea my defense won’t be costly either.

I think CHO became the preferred starter ahead of Elanga by the end at Forest. I'm leaning towards Kamada if I see he's playing in Olise's role at Palace. Minteh or Pedro another possibility at Brighton. Buendia or Rogers at Villa another I'm pondering. Will wait and watch all in preseason. ESR if he moves could be another option.

Haaland will start with a bang, that's almost a given and the no-Haaland teams know this, everyone knows this so if you choose to go without him you know the risks. I suspect those going without have accepted the points they'll miss and have planned their teams to make up for that.
FTR I'm pretty sure I'll be going without Haaland.

I was talking start the the season in general. Traditionally he's always started with a bang the first few games and I suspect this will be no different. He could score a brace at the bridge, that'll be 26 points for all the captainers.

I think I agree. If we had been given 5 extra transfers, I would almost certainly start with Haaland. But if Haaland blanks against Ipswich, which is not impossible, EH teams are doomed.

Anyone ever tried to play fantasy by blocking out all social media news in relation to fantasy? Basically don’t read anything about fantasy, ignore ownership percentages and just play the game based on what you think.

I would love to try this and think that some of my best finishes were when there wasn’t much on social media about fantasy (old days).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to listen to what people say, but you will be subconsciously swayed by it.

Yea captaincy I am going to follow my gut more. I hate captaining players out of fear of ownership, really sucks.

In regard to ignoring social media, can’t realistically see myself doing that. But I am keen to maintain my current draft for the most part which is based on my own picks. That said got to see who is in form yet.

Haven't gone as far as that but I do think awareness of EO is more hindrance than help to me once I start thinking this player is dull to own & only a 'shield' so how can I beat the template, rather than just picking on pure points potential. But even though I'm not on twitter it's very difficult to reach this state of blissful ignorance, and tbf I do get plenty of useful info here & enjoy the discussions. Still, I'm trying to skim over the RMTs for now & not get too bogged down in template/anti-template thinking

Yea there’s useful info around for sure. Just need to take the good bits. The discussions are also good.

It would just be an interesting experiment to isolate some fantasy managers of different experience and see how they would do without external influences. If you look at the big social media pundits, they all copy each other essentially and form the template. I wonder how well they would all do if they didn’t see what someone like Andy was doing.

For the first half of the season before my brainfart wrecked my season, I led all the content creators and their template by a long chalk. I'll continue to watch one or two a week, but i'll play my own game again and try to learn from my own mistakes, not those of others.

I deleted twitter midway through the season before last and my rank went from around 800k to an eventual 35kish finish. Finished top 10k last year too (best finish) with no social media. I browse here and look at stats because you can't watch every game. Trouble with twitter is people have to say something whether they believe it or not, so you get bandwagons for bang average players because someone has made a few nice slides on them.

    No Haaland:

    Henderson (Turner)

Gvardiol Martinez van de Ven (Konsa 4.0m)

    Palmer Saka Foden Gordon (Winks)

    Isak Watkins Havertz

    Haaland:

    Henderson (Turner)

Gvardiol Martinez van de Ven Konsa (4.0m)

    Palmer Saka Gordon Eze (Winks)

Still wish they'd impose a moratorium on price rises for the first 2 or 3 weeks - the FOMO and knee jerkery that gone early doors is chaotic

Got to be worth including Toney in early drafts if he does end up going someone good like Arsenal which could make a mockery of his 7.5M tag?

The 5 free transfers thing is being completely overrated. Who will ever go that long without making a transfer? It's difficult enough to go 2 weeks without making a transfer, never mind 5.

Early predictions for 3rd & 4th place this season? Seems wide open. I think Newcastle might bounce back to take 3rd assuming key players stay fit(ter than last year). Villa to regress a little (5th?) with UCL schedule. Maybe Liverpool for 4th but expect they will wobble a bit. Spurs?

Newcastle is a good shout - they'll benefit massively from only playing once a week. Spurs looked decent before injuries got them too. As it stands, I fancy something like:

      1. City
      2. Arsenal
      3. Liverpool
      4. Spurs
      5. Newcastle
      6. Villa
      7. United
      8. Chelsea
