As the hotly-anticipated double Gameweek 34 approaches, this evening we assess the goalkeepers and defenders who could be poised for a strong finish to the season. It’s no surprise to see Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester’s assets dominating at the top of our rankings with the double in mind, while the likes of Kelvin Davis and Ryan Bertrand are the big losers, with Southampton’s season in danger of tailing off.

GOALKEEPERS

After picking up a second straight shut-out, Thibaut Courtois returns to the top of the Watchlist ahead of a kind run-in (ars/lei, CPL, LIV, wba, SUN). The 5.9-priced Belgian is the cheapest route into the Chelsea rearguard, and with Jose Mourinho becoming increasingly pragmatic as his side edge nearer to the title, the option to double up on the Blues defence is tempting. The only note of caution is if Chelsea do wrap up the title with a couple of matches to spare, Petr Cech may be afforded a run out, with his time at Stamford Bridge possibly coming to an end.

Simon Mignolet currently leads the way among goalkeepers in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 126 points, and the Belgian looks a shrewd pick for the rest of the season. The Reds have kept three clean sheets in their last five league matches, and with a strong schedule (wba/hul, QPR, che, CPL, sto), it is no surprise the 5.3-valued keeper is the fourth most transferred in player so far this week with over 30,000 new owners.

Having bagged a clean sheet and two save points in the 2-0 win against Swansea, confidence in Kasper Schmeichel’s Fantasy prospects is certainly rising. Coming in at just 4.4 in FPL, the Danish international faces the most favourable run-in (bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR) according to our Season Ticker, so for those looking to free up funds to splash elsewhere, Schmeichel could hold the key as a budget enabler.

Arsenal’s David Ospina is another on the rise, with the Gunners favourable run-in following this weekend’s tough encounter with Chelsea (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA) enhancing his prospects. Arsene Wenger’s side have kept three clean sheets in their last six outings, so the 4.9-rated Colombian looks worthy of serious consideration for one of our three Arsenal spots as we plan ahead for their double Gameweek 37.

After picking up a third clean sheet in his last five outings (a fifth in six home matches), Tim Howard remains a good option between the sticks for Fantasy managers. The Toffees backline looks far more secure in recent weeks, and with a reasonable run of fixtures (MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT), the 5.1-priced keeper could continue to reward his 9.3% ownership.

Southampton’s Kelvin Davis drops this time around, with concerns over the Saints rearguard away from St Mary’s reaffirmed in the 2-1 defeat at Stoke. Ronald Koeman’s side have failed to register a clean sheet in their last four away matches, and with three of their final five on their travels (sun, lei, mci), along with home encounters against Tottenham and Aston Villa, shut-outs could be hard to come by.

With Newcastle lying third in our Season Ticker (SWA, lei, WBA, qpr, WHM), Tim Krul finds himself back in our thoughts. John Carver’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches but with Fabricio Coloccini returning from suspension against Tottenham to strengthen their prospects, the 4.4-priced Dutch international could provide decent value.

Burnley’s Tom Heaton is on the rise following an impressive 11-point haul against Everton. The 4.6-rated stopper kept out Ross Barkley’s penalty and also registered seven saves, helping him pick up two bonus points. With the fixtures (LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl) now in his favour, Heaton could well challenge Mignolet as the top scoring keeper in FPL – he is just six points behind the Belgian.

After West Ham’s tepid display at the Etihad on Sunday, Adrian finds himself falling down the pecking order. The Hammers do have one of the better run-ins (qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new) but, having only managed one shut-out in their last eight matches, it’s hard to back the Spaniard.

City’s Joe Hart remains a decent option. The champions chalked up a fourth consecutive home clean sheet last time out and with Aston Villa, QPR and Southampton still to visit the Etihad, he could continue to bring in the points. A hefty 6.1 price tag does lessen his appeal – particularly with the likes of Mignolet and Courtois having the double this week – but the England No.1 looks likely to add to his 11 shut-outs as the campaign draws to a close.

DEFENDERS

Branislav Ivanovic keeps his place at the top of our defender rankings, with Chelsea defensive assets looking crucial to our double Gameweek 34 plans as Mourinho tightens things up at the back. The Serbia international has only registered a single assist in the last six Gameweeks in terms of attacking returns, and has only created four chances over that period. Coming in at a hefty 7.7 in FPL, this is a concern, but with Ivanovic and John Terry looking the only sure starters at the back, he remains worthy of investment for those who have the necessary funds.

Now back from a three-match suspension, Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel climbs up the ladder in our latest update. The Reds have kept four clean sheets in their last four away league matches with the Slovakian in the starting XI, and with trips to West Brom and Hull in the double, it’s no surprise he’s garnered over 30,000 new owners this week. His ability to pick up bonus points is also key – Skrtel leads all defenders with 22 accrued so far.

Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp moves up a place, with form and fixtures in his favour. With two clean sheets in the Foxes last three home matches, and with Nigel Pearson switching between three and four-man defences – therefore boosting the Ghanaian’s out of position prospects – the 4.5-priced defender looks a strong pick for the rest of the season, given the strong schedule (bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR). Robert Huth and Wes Morgan are also worth consideration, with the duo leading all defenders for goal attempts over the last six Gameweeks.

Although Arsenal’s double isn’t until Gameweek 37, Laurent Koscielny is firmly on our radar. From Gameweek 35, the Gunners schedule is very favourable (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA), while similar to Skrtel, the 6.0-valued defender has a handy tendency to pick up bonus points, earning nine despite missing significant parts of the season due to injury. Having also bagged three goals, the Frenchman should see plenty of investment in the coming weeks.

With two goals and four assists to his name this term, West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell has offered a potent attacking threat from left-back. As mentioned with Adrian, clean sheets may be in short supply despite a favourable run-in with the Hammers stuttering of late, but the 5.6-rated defender always looks a potential source of returns further up the field.

Despite averaging 5.4 points per appearance since returning to the Everton starting XI in Gameweek 29, Leighton Baines slides down our ladder. Although he still boasts an attacking threat, illustrated by the four shots and as many chances created against the Clarets, Baines – as confirmed by Roberto Martinez last weekend – is no longer his side’s number one spot-kick taker, lessening his appeal in the premium bracket.

Kieran Trippier remains in our thoughts thanks to Burnley’s good run of fixtures (LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl). The 4.8-priced right-back impressed again in the 1-0 defeat to Everton, registering ten crosses, and is second among defenders for chances created (11) over the last six Gameweeks. With the Clarets only conceding four goals in their last five matches, Trippier offers decent potential at both ends of the pitch.

One of the players most affected by the upcoming double Gameweeks is Ryan Bertrand. Valued at 5.9 in FPL, the Southampton left-back no longer looks worthy of the lofty price tag, having only created two chances in the last six Gameweeks. With the switch to Skrtel or a budget Leicester defender staring many Fantasy managers in the face, it is no surprise to see Bertrand and the more heavily owned Nathaniel Clyne among the most transferred out players this week.

With Crystal Palace’s schedule toughening up after this weekend’s home clash with Hull, Scott Dann falls in our latest refresh. Alan Pardew’s side face trips to Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as a home encounter with United, so while the 5.0-rated defender offers a significant goal threat from set pieces, there look to be better options available.

Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid is a non-mover this week, with three home matches (SUN, TOT, LIV) in the Potters last five. Away trips to Swansea and Burnley also offer hope of defensive returns, and although Mark Hughes’ side haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five league outings, the 4.4-priced defender remains a solid budget option.

After collecting his eighth assist of the season in the weekend loss to Tottenham, Daryl Janmaat (5.3) returns to the Watchlist. The Dutchman is now tied with Baines for the most assists among defenders and, having recently covered in the heart of the back-four, has now returned to his preferred right-back berth. Janmaat could yet take advantage of some friendly final fixtures (SWA, lei, WBA, qpr, WHM).

Patrick van Aanholt keeps his place on our ladder, with double Gameweek 37 (LEI/ars) very much in mind. For those wildcarding this week, the 4.1-rated defender is worth considering for your five-man backlines, having managed seven goal attempts in the last four Gameweeks, as well as creating five chances over the same period. While the Black Cats’ run-in is mixed (sto, SOT, eve, LEI/ars, che), the value offered by the Dutch international looks hard to ignore.

  2. Damage limitation for the wildcardless

Definitely a dullard way to look at it, but for those of us without a WC, this dgw is all about damage limitation. So who do you think are the most damaging players that you've got to own for DGW34 at all costs?

Players who can get explosive hauls (12+ points), and will be owned by at least 40% of managers based on top 10k stats. Stats below are loosely based on last week's fpldiscovery selection sheet, with some generously non-scientific extrapolation from my end. Here are my top explosive candidates, who I'd take a hit to have in my team this weekend :

    Individuals :
    1. Hazard (c) goes without saying
    2. Sterling, looks like he'll be owned by at least 40% and captained by over 10% (chasers)
    3. Kane, even after sales, should be in >60% of teams and could well score a brace
    4. Aguero, same as Kane
    5. Silva is capable of hauls, and should be in 40% of teams

    Coverage :
    6. Ivanovic or Terry, both of them around 40% each, keep one to at least cover a possible double clean sheet at ars+lei
    7. One of huth/morgan/schlupp/schmeich, it doesn't matter which. Combined, their ownership will be >60%, so same as above : need to cover the (improbable) double CS. Which of these guys scores a goal is a lottery.
    8. Same story with Mignolet/Skrtel/Morena, get just one it doesn't matter. Goal or penalty save is just a bonus.

No one else could significantly hurt your rank this week, I believe. Below are some popular transfers in, but I think you should avoid taking hits for these guys :

    1. Henderson and Fabregas : ~35% ownership each, but (historically?) low chance of huge returns
    2. Coutinho, could explode but low ownership
    3. Leicester attackers, same as Coutinho, Vardy/Ulloa could explode but have low ownership individually
    4. Skrtel has been out for so long his ownership dropped to almost 0%, so at max he'll rise to 25% or so. Don't get him for a -4 if you already have 'Pool defensive cover.
    5. Sanchez ? Would bench him if I had him, Chelsea want to shut shop, and his ownership will be 25%.
    6. Remy and Sturrige : could explode if they play, but low ownership.

If you really want to take a hit from this lot, would only recommend Henderson and maybe Fabregas.

I'm sure a lot of this reasoning is flawed, would be happy to see if the community agrees or disagrees with this. Remember this is only for those poor souls such as myself who don't have a WC !

I have a gut feeling this DGW may be a blessing in disguise for non-wc'ers:

      - Vardy, Cambiasso and Leicester defenders to blank twice
      - Liverpool to disappoint, but one CS
      - Giroud, Austin, Murray and Benteke, who a lot of non-wc'ers will keep, will get attacking returns

      On wc myself, btw 😉

Haha, good luck with the WC ! For the sake of you and the 20% who held so late, I hope Vardy, Coutinho etc deliver big.. I just have a feeling it won't be enough to significantly dent the ranks of those of us who blew our WC early, but you never know ! Especially if Kane / Silva / Sanchez can match Vardy/Cout/Hendo minus 4 pts

I haven't got a WC and I agree with lots of what you're saying. However, I don't think it's necessary to get Leicester defensive coverage, I reckon their cleansheet this weekend was a fluke.

I've gone to Coutinho, Sterling and Skrtel from Liverpool, 7 DGW players for -4. I'm praying that wildcarders have shipped/benched the likes of Giroud and Kane and that these guys explode.

You're right, Leic CS is so unlikely.. I did Clyne -> Morgan this week, but that was mostly a useful makeweight to do Hamer(?!) -> Mignolet and Eriksen -> Sterling. Had 0.0 in the bank before and after the trades !

7 DGWers for -4 is excellent planning at your end, well done

Its definitely a dullard way to look at it. I think its important to point out that points hits can and will negate any advantage of the DGW. Sometimes you'd be better off with those 4pts and an alternative defender playing than hoping a Leicester defender can get more than 2 blanks.

I believe there is also an offensive approach you can take. Go for the alternative options such as Coutinho or double Chelsea defence, putting the armband on Sterling etc. Perhaps fighting fire with fire and playing differentials against the wildcarders template could give you an unseen advantage.

Nice analysis, but I tend to think that my rank will slip if I worry about coverage and differentials too much. I would focus on maximising expected points. Full stop. If everyone is getting Sterling and some are captaining him, but you don't expect he will score big, then don't get him and, if you're right, your rank will improve.

Fair dos, any other week I'd absolutely agree with you - maximise expected points and focus on improving rank.

But just this week I feel I want to make some OR position / ML lead defense preparations, batten down the hatches, wait for the dgw storm to pass over, and hopefully emerge without falling down the ranks too much.. my post reflects that style of defensive thinking

Good post, think this is a good check list for managers without a wildcard. While we probably cant rocket up the rankings with 8-9 doublers, covering the main assets should be enough to tread water and money in the bank to get Arsenal players seems a good plan. This is why I wouldnt go for Vardy as hes some way off in price from Giroud and the only way to get him will be selling Kane or Aguero which I am not a fan of (unless you bank 4m and sell Vardy when he has Newcastle at home)

      1. Enzo the Baker

Cheers McNulty. With regards to Vardy (or any of the other Leic DGWers), I would't mind getting one of them for a hit if that funds other upgrades like Siggy/Mane -> Sterling, Rose -> Skrtel etc

Also regarding Girood - perhaps we shouldn't be too hasty in planning for a straight swap, 1 FT to Giroud - who knows how the dynamic will change in the next 10 days.

I am on wildcard but I think your assessment is accurate apart from 1 glaring error. Kane.

You say he's a player worth taking a -4 to get into your team. Well that's certainly not my view seeing that I have just removed him on wildcard.

His next 3 fixtures are Southampton (a) - hardly a great fixture - City (h) and Stoke (a). I see absolutely nothing to fear there and if I had decided to keep him he'd be benched this week anyway. But I would far rather keep Giroud on my bench (as I am doing), ready for Arsenal's great fixtures and DGW coming up.

I also don't see that having both Silva and Aguero is necessary and wouldn't take a hit to get both either. One is enough. Personally I have reluctantly gone with Aguero and Silva has exited on wildcard.

This is precisely the advantage non WCers can have. WCers are selling the likes of Silva and Kane, to those without a WC keeping them is a point of difference now and this might prove to be a good thing. As a WCer yourself and having sold those players you must disagree and stay firm in the belief that Silva and Kane are no longer any good.

I agree with what you're saying here - I shouldn't have clubbed Silva together with Haz/Sterling/Aguero in the "Take a hit to bring in" camp. However, we're agreed that transferring Silva out for a hit is probably not the best idea.

I'm still on the fence with Kane - would I take a hit to get him in if I were defending a lead ? Starting this week, Kane will be at that ownership (50-60%) where if you don't have him, a haul could really affect your OR, but if you have him - you can finally use his hauls to move up the OR. It's been a while since I've cheered for Kane's attacking points !

Understood. Most weeks recently a missed penalty and sending off for Kane would have suited me better than anything else even though he has been in my team.

One thing is clear - this GW will bust the template. Wildcarders will potentially have quite different teams to non-wildcarders. And they will have an easy route to maximise the last 4 GWs (including DGW37) if they plan it right.

The fixtures turn for many teams in GW34. On my winter wildcard I went with Foster/Myhill knowing I'd be wildcarding again now. That has worked fine. Other teams have good runs now - Burnley, Villa, Leicester can all provide useful rotation defenders. I am making a decision now on who I want my Arsenal players to be in GW37, I don't have to go with what I already have.

It will be an interesting last 5 GWs, that's for sure.

I'm glad the assessment has received a 'Pass' rating from you Ruth, cheers! With regard to Kane, it's not so much his fixtures or form but the ownership and potential for explosive hauls that makes me think it's a bad idea for non-WCers to remove him.

        1. Ruth_NZ

I'm not saying it's a good idea for non-wildcarders to remove him. I am just saying I wouldn't take a hit to bring him in.

I am looking after a non-wildcard team for a friend right now and Kane will still be in it come the weekend. He's certainly not a terrible option. And with some wildcard arrangements it could make sense to keep him too. But I don't see him as in any way essential in the 5-game season we are now playing.

I'm curious, when has Sterling ever exploded this season to make him a potential explosion? Think he's only gotten 2-3 double figure hauls, and even then they have been in the low teens at best.

What makes you think he's so explosive?

      1. Enzo the Baker
        • 12 Years

Sterling has had 10 GW's where he's scored 6 points or more, which in a DGW is 12 points - qualifying him as "explosive" according to this post's (completely arbitrary) threshold of 12 pt = haul(!) Add to that his ownership, and I think that makes him a damaging asset that non WC-ers must guard against

Henderson runs him close with 9 such GW's, but his lower ownership, lower captaincy %, and Gerrard hovering around reduces his threat to your FPL rank IMO.
In any case, if I could afford Hendo as my 4th/5th mid without taking too many hits, I would like a midfield of : Haz, Sterling, Silva and Hendo

Are you guys looking at Sanchez for the DGW or going for budget options like Ramsey?

Thinking Koscielny, Giroud and Ramsey at the moment...

I would suggest Willian in for Zouma and Fab in deep against Arsenal.

Good chance of gametime against Leicester if Jose rotates.

My feeling on Remy is to just stick with him. Will take two transfers to replace him with a Chelsea midfielder (the only sensible options for similar attacking potential) and think he'll start ahead of Drogba if fit

Am i right in thinking on a WC you can do transfers in stages?
So a few tonight, a few tomorrow etc? Just so it gives more time to think / avoid price rises?

So in theory i could take a -20 tonight? And then hit the WC button on Saturday?

          Schmeichel
          Terry Skrtel Clyne
          Hazard Fabregas Sterling Silva
          Kane Aguero Giroud

Panti; Cork, Dawson, Naughton and 0.3ITB.

          A) stick with the team (-4)
          B) silva -> Cout or Hendo? (-8)
          C) Cork -> Cambiasso (-8)
          D) something else?

            I think I'd stick..

If you went B you would probably want Silva back after GW35 ..
If you went C you would end up benching Kane, though that might end up working out overall.. you might also have some frustrating weeks benching the wrong player. With so little in the bank I think I'd stay with Cork and just focus on getting in Arsenal mids! Or Clyne -> Koscielny

Worth taking a hit to get in Sterling/Continiho and a Leicester Def

          Or

          Get Henderson

          Thanks!

          Trippier, Clichy, Ivan
          Sterling, Fabr, Cout, Haz
          Aguero, Giroud, Kane

Bench - Ki, PVA, Toby - would you rather play any of them?

Already 8k hit - any changes? Plan to kick Pool players out and bring in Ozil Ramsey next week

So it boils down to these options guys? Sorry, Repost but needa do it tonight because of rises..
Both options will allow me the cash to do Remy to Giroud the following week.

          Fabianski
          Terry Schlupp Bruce
          Eriksen Hazard Silva Sanchez
          Remy Aguero Kane
          Subs- Myhill Wollschied Boyd Fonte

          A) Fabianski and Eriksen to Mignolet and Henderson
          B) Eriksen and Sanchez to Coutinho and Sterling

Don't want to get rid of Silva tho with Villa coming up. Plus i see him as a bit of a differential with so many getting rid

Could work, def a possibility. Only thing is is i got Remy in 2 weeks ago and wouldn't forgive myself if he did something

You think Migs and Henderson are bad options?
