The Community Round Up

With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

    Good evening all,

I've a couple of questions for people with Costa in their line-ups and thinking about Aguero. With the gw2 fixture for both players being Man City v Chelsea, how likely do you think it is that Aguero will start the fixture? Secondly, if he is starting don't you want the better striker who will also be playing at home? Finally would you rather keep cash in the bank for the one transfer or take a hit in the first week of the season?

    1. Theatre_Of_Screams
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

I made my team with Aguero paid for but am going to start with Rooney at home to Spurs. I'm going to keep him in for GW2 (Villa A) because l think it's better than Costa (Man City A). If Aguero plays against Chelsea, l will then bring him in for Rooney. If he doesn't play, l will see what happens.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

This sort of scenario is what is pushing me towards Rooney over Costa as the gw2 and 3 fixtures are so much nicer.

I have Costa in my team currently, I plan on using 2 FTs before gw4 which would give me a strike force of aguero and costa

I remember making a post last year about how to post the perfect RMT, and I've just found it on google. I think it's quite relevant to post it again due to the large number of new/gravless RMTs that are all over the site.

If you want us to rate your team here's what you should do:

    1) Firstly, get a grav. It takes two minutes and will get you more replies, as well as getting you more involved with the community here. Look at the FAQ if you don't know how to do this.

    2) Share your feelings about your team. Don't just post 'RMT' and list your players. Tell us who you're deciding between, who's definitely in your team, and why.

    3) Use your manners. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that it's frustrating to give an in depth comment about someone's team without getting, at the very least, a thankyou in return.

    4) Don't frequently repost your team - especially in the DZ when pages don't move quickly, be patient, your post hasn't disappeared.

    5) Rate other peoples teams too. On this site we share our views and help out others, as well as asking for advice on our own team too.

Mmm that's true. I guess my thinking is that it's just common courtesy to be thankful and appreciative if someone responds to your post, and if you want your team rated then make an effort to rate someone else's too.

Number two is huge, if you don't put your own thinking and effort into writing, I won't put much effort into my reply. If you post "RMT" and just list your players, I won't write more than 5 words in my reply. I think I can speak for most regulars that what we get out of helping people on this site is that we get to learn from others as we discuss their ideas with them and so we won't hang around for one sided conversations.

I think 5.5 on Ki as a backup midfielder is too much. I would change Ki for Wanyama/Anya (4.5m) and then upgrade someone else. Toure to Silva perhaps.

I personally would pick Deeney (captain and penalties) ahead of Wilson.

I like O'Shea but l would definitely avoid Hutton. He wasn't nailed at the end of last season and l think there are much better prospects with Huth or Bassong.

Would pick one of Deeney or Wilson after analysis the fixture a bit more.

Good point on Ki. Gonna sell him. I could upgrade Toure>Silva or Ritchie>Tadic/Milnar/Hendo/Siggy. Any suggestion in this regard?

        Gonna avoid Hutton. Thnx 🙂

If l was you, l would firstly upgrade Toure to Sterling for 0.5m. Sterling is nailed on and has looked very dangerous in the pre-season games.

Then l would either upgrade Schmeichel to Pantilimon - who has pretty good fixtures and should get a lot of bonus points this season with the points changes (l have him in my team)

Or change Schmeichel and Schwarzer to Ruddy (Norwich) and Butland (Stoke) as they have the best rotation matches of any 4.5m goalkeeper combination. Mark Hughes has already said that Butland will be Stoke's first choice keeper this season.

    Schmeichel Hennessy
    Azpi Kos Alderweireld Oshea Saylor
    Hazard Ozil Chadli Milner Anya
    Giroud Rooney Pelle

Been tinkering for a long time now as I'm looking at the possibilities of going Hazardless.

Here's my defence is that helps -
      Steklenburg - 5.0
      Ruddy - 4.5

      Ivanovic - 7.0
      Koscielny - 6.0
      Williams - 5.0
      Huth - 4.5
      Baker - 4.0

I see Clyne has a high ownership I’m currently on him too. He is a good player but doesn’t Rodgers play 3 at the back sometimes and I know he would play Clyne at a RWB but on the other side doesn’t he have no other choice but play Moreno? Could Moreno be a differential or will Rodgers throw him in the dustbin? Or could Enrique make a comeback?

      Very tough.

Pelle vs Sakho - I have a feeling Pelle will outscore him but Sakho offers a better value for money.

Ozil vs Mane - Mane is not very consistent for my liking so I prefer Ozil who I believe will be a huge asset to Arsenal this year.

Azpi vs Ivan - Ivan al day everyday. Attacking threat and works well under the new BAPS.

Sakho vs Koscielny - Has to be Koscielny for me.

Mignolet is never going to reach his peak that he was at pre-Liverpool and he stands to close to his line

Darmian good be rotated a fair bit

Azpi is a poor man's Ivanovic

Mert is a poor mans Koscielny and is getting old and could lose his spot to Gabriel a some point

      Henderson looks like an orc

Walcott isn't a nailed starter when Sanchez is back

      Hazard is overpriced

Ritchie is unproven in the big leagues

Rooney could go back to midfield if Van Gaal gets Muller

Costa doesn't get bonus points but he does get yellows

Mitrovic is very young and raw and Newcastle will probably ruin him with Mike Ashley's aim for 16th

You bench is budget and why oh why Steve Sidwell?

OP said "destroy at will" and I couldn't resist.

Please would you RMT and suggest as when it's necessary?

    Cech (Hennessey)

    Cedric/Huth/Azp (Kaboul/Baker)

    Walcott/Cazorla/Hendo/Fab/Sterling

    Pelle/Rooney (Deeney)

    3-5-2

        Otherwise, all good?

And which of those 2 would you make the swap with Ozil?

I'd say Walcott because as good as he is he might not always start but Cazorla will. I'll say I'm not a fan of Hendo but he got a lot of points last year so he's fine but I'm not convinced about Pelle.

Looks well balanced but maybe downgrade Hendo to upgrade Pelle and play Deeney?

Nice. Defence rotates well. Not sure if I'm brave enough to go 3-5-2. The Arsenal mids is just preference but I prefer Ozil to Caz.

get 2 nailed keepers (for 9.5 not hard)
Baker won't play, but you have Cedric so Targett not a great sub there
I believe you have to have Costa or Haz for Capt. duties
Sterling (not great fix's til gw4)> 8.5 and def Pelle> Benteke
      as is 6.5

    Hello all.
So I have stuck with this team I have put together for a few days now without tinkering. A feat in itself. I am deciding to go with Azpi and two rotating 4.5 pairs. Sun-Lei and Wat-Bou. With Spurs away to United in GW 1 I have opted for Puncheon as a one week punt. He should still be on some set pieces right even with Cabaye there? 1m is itb to change him to Chadli in GW 2.

    Schmeichel, Hennessy
    Azpi, Coates, Huth, Mings, Holebas
    Walcott, Sterling, Manè, Puncheon(Chadli), Anya
    Rooney, Costa Benteke

Gives me a front 7 from all the big teams: Ars, Mci, SOU, Tot, Mun, Che, Liv.
Should I just start with Chadli instead of planning a transfer already?
    Thanks

Pretend the FT is really -4, Puncheon needs to win by 4 minimum.

Thanks TM. I should really look at it like this more. I have been trying to keep up with the pre season games as much as possible and been using the news on here from them also but I've not really heard anything about Tottenham ?

Hello everyone. Does berahino at spurs affect chadli? Maybe eriksen drops to the wing and chaldi to the bench?
