With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

Between Ramsey and Ozil, who's the better pick? Sure, Ozil is probably a wee bit more nailed on that Rambo, but speaking purely w.r.t points; The Welshman or the German?

    1. Grand Thibauto

German. He is more in the attacking third than Ramsey. Sadly, both of them would eventually give points with no difference almost. If you take Ozil after he scores a goal and an assist from Ramsey. Ramsey might do that the next match. So keep what you think is best.

        • 14 Years

True. I suppose both of them would keep ticking points over. However it's undeniable that Ramsey would probably score more goals than Ozil if he played every week. Tough call really.

If Ramsey plays CM then Ramsey. He's not as effective on the wing though and thats where he might start the season unfortunately. So I'll have to vote for Ozil

Interesting points. Although, Ryan, he has scored pretty well coming off the wing. He tends to drift in and take up central positions a lot eitherways, maybe not perpetually, but at least that critical points in an attack.

He's still not the same player though, he'll always be amongst the points but coming from central positions he gets better goal scoring opportunities. I'd say Ozil is the better bet for now

He's been in my team for a few weeks but changed to Ozil on the account of Walcott being a rotation risk. Sanchez could be back as soon as GW2 so there isn't much point going with Walcott really.

Ozil is getting a full pre season in for the first time since coming to England, in the early weeks of the season in the warmer conditions I see him contributing more points wise than Rambo. Who do you prefer?

I think it is really really hard to look past Ramsey when he is fit, he's almost always firing. Ozil blows hot and cold sometimes tbh. That being said, he looks deadly ATM.

    5. Shifty

Very difficult choice. I've been on Ozil + Walcott for a week or so now and I can't see myself moving either for Ramsey.

Walcott should play against WHU and his record against the Hammers is pretty good, so he stays for first few games.

Ozil to me is nailed on as it gets in the Arsenal attack and we know very clearly what his role is.

Ramsey on the other hand, has some variables about him despite his superior goal threat. Could he be pushed wide, will he play the holding role, could he find himself sharing minutes with Wilshere etc.

From an FPL perspective, flip a coin. From a GW1 perspective, Ozil removes more variables and that's what we want.

  4. Top 3 Tips For a Great Start
    Enzo the Baker

I think the 3 most important things to consider while setting up your FPL team should be :

    1. Whether (it looks like) your team will outscore the overall Average points in each the first 2-3 weeks. We have no sure way of knowing this, but RMT can help along with past records / fixtures etc.

    2. Whether it is possible to bring in heavy hitters on short notice like Sanchez, Aguero and Costa without having to take multiple hits or being forced to WC. There may come a time like GW4 when a heavy hitter is fit and going to be captained by a large chunk of managers against Watford at home, and you can't miss this.

    3. Whether you can quickly jump on to this seasons mid/low budget bandwagon striker, mid, and defender with only FTs and no hits. Thinking of last season, we had Siggy and Hutton/Wisdom emerging early.

I feel like too often we tend to ignore points 2 and 3 in favor of point 1 above, so I just thought I'll post it on here as a reminder to myself if I get too tempted. I'm thinking of starting with a team of :

    4.5 4.0
    7.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.0
    11.5 9.0 9.0 7.0 4.5
    10.5 8.0 6.5

    and 0.5m itB.

The 4.5s are placeholders for emerging Huttons/Wisdom, the 7.0 for this year's Siggy type and the 6.5 for this year's Austin/Kane.

I meant the RMT tool Doos, i believe its a decent indicator of your team's potential to score points.. would rather have a team that scores say in the 310-330 range than one that scores 280-290

Ah that sucks :/ In that case I'll restrict my claim to : "past records and fixture difficulty can be good indicators of whether your team can outscore the Overall Average in the short/medium term" ...

                • 12 Years

Ah I appreciate the table Doos, but I'm not sure what you're trying to say ?There's so much that those stats are hiding - a prime example would be that mid #1 and #2's runs of points coincide with their teammates injuries and being played slightly OoP - which may not be repeated to the same extent early this season.

I'm afraid your table suffers from the same shortcomings as the RMT tool, and both the table and tool must be taken with a pinch of salt :/

For me, 2 is the most important and I see 3 as a function of 2.

We're in a very odd predicament where 2 out of the 3 more 'explosive' options in the game will miss GW1. I think many have a general plan which will result in Aguero in by GW4...but to achieve that, we need clarity on 3 and where the value is this season.

To this end, personally I've decided to go with Costa-Rooney + Fab-Walcott, and treating Fab/Walcott as my 'Aguero bank' and Costa/Rooney as the placeholder for Aguero. Don't want to plan too many transfers now, but at least these 4 players gives me some stability until i have that clarity on value.

      1. Enzo the Baker
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I like your plan, you have multiple options this way instead of a lot of folk who have only Rooney as their Aguero funds plan. I'm guilty of the latter myself - although I'm claiming that I could also do Lukaku + 9.0 mid + 0.5m itB -> Aguero + 4.5 mid if an Albrighton/Boyd type emerges

        1. Shifty
          • 12 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

Yea but does that means the 4.5 is your 4th mid? Very risky imo.

I have accepted that if you want 2 top strikers (Aguero + Costa/Rooney)...Hazard has to be left out. Keeping 3 of Aguero/Costa/Rooney/Hazard really takes a toll on the rest of team.

          1. Enzo the Baker
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

Yes in that case the 4.5 would be my 4th mid temporarily just so I can squeeze in Aguero(c). However this is my Plan B - the better option is to do Rooney -> Aguero.

Hazard's ownership + captaincy in GW1 has me convinced that it's too dangerous to leave him out from the GW1 team. I don't mind downgrading to Fab over the following weeks though, especially if Haz doesn't perform great and I don't see me captaining him any time soon

            1. Shifty
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

I think judging individual players based on his ownership is GW1 isn't important at all. I look at it as what I can do with the extra 2.5 mil.

              For example...

              A) Hazard Benteke
              B) Fabregas Costa

Personally favour B because it gives me arguably better coverage of Chelsea's points in Hazards absence, while giving me a good captain option in Costa. There are games where I would be more comfortable putting the armband on Costa than Hazard.

    4. Ruth_NZ
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

Hmmm... we agree on many things but not entirely on this.

      1. First you need to settle on your strategy. Early wildcard or hold it for later? What structure do you want to go with and why (yours is 3-4-3 but others are possible)? When will you use your chips? Who are your 2 or 3 captaincy options (what positions at least)? You can't properly set up your team until this is decided. And this needs to take this season's pricing, rotation options, fixture blocks and fixture runs into account.

This season's pricing is different. The starting GKs have been compressed into the 4.5 to 5.5 range. That's new. The defenders have been compressed into the 4.5 to 7.0 range with no guaranteed starters at 4.0 and many fine defenders at 5.0 and 5.5 that would have been more expensive the way the pricing worked last season. That's new too. Certain specific players (Aguero, Costa, Hazard, Sanchez, Silva) have been protectively priced so it becomes very hard to have more than 2 (perhaps 3) without completely unbalancing your squad. That's new also. So anyone that doesn't at least review what is optimal squad structure in the light of that is missing a trick.

      2. Everyone wants a fast start. But you have to balance that with longer term objectives. I would rather be in the top 100 after 10 weeks than after 1 week.

      3. I disagree about the heavy hitters in general. I do not need to be able to bring in Hazard or Sanchez on short notice because I have decided to go without a 11.0+ midfielder. I don't care what anyone else does or who they captain. I'm not going to do it until it suits me and I don't believe I will lose out by that - other captaincy options are also available. The time for Hazard and/or Sanchez will be when I have a higher TV or when injuries at Arsenal and/or Chelsea make them more essential.

For me, I have a plan to bring Aguero in for GW4 because he's one of my selected captaincy options. But I don't need to keep all options open if it means structuring my squad in what I consider to be a sub-optimum way. If events indicate a change in strategy taking a hit to adjust would not be the end of the world.

      3. The third item can be taken account of by building "sweet spots" into your squad. It's the same kind of idea but isn't reliant on stand-out players emerging.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/26/sky-sports-focus-player-list-analysis-midfielders-2/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_10608962

I am all for building some flexibility in. But if Wilson scores a brace in GW1 that doesn't suddenly make him the season's must-have striker. Last season we saw managers chasing from Bojan to Naismith to Ulloa and so on and often getting them after their FPL points hauls had been scored, not before.

      (A) Settle on your overall strategy; (B) Create a suitable team structure with sufficient flexibility (sweet spots); (C) Select players accordingly with both short and longer term objectives in mind. In that order. That's the task as far as I can see it.

Interested to hear your thoughts if you have a minute?

        Butland Ruddy
        Fonte Ivan Koscielny Morgan Richards
        Mane Hazard Walcott Ritchie Wanyama
        Rooney Benteke Wilson

trying not to plan to far in advance, GW4 ivan to a 4.5 to allow rooney-aguero

It's a good looking team. Butland/Ruddy is probably the best 4.5/4.5 rotation out there for the first 12 weeks as far as I can see.

Soares will probably score similar to Fonte at 0.5 cheaper. Walcott is a risk that could be rewarding but his gametime does not seem to be secure after Sanchez returns. You could save 0.5 there with Ozil, Mata or Eriksen. Ritchie could be Atsu who will give him a run for his money and is 0.5 cheaper. Make those 3 changes and instead of downgrading Ivan to 4.5 for Aguero you could downgrade Ivan to Azpilicueta for Aguero.

I'd look at some tweaks like that. But overall it's a nice starting team as far as I can see.

Hi Ruth_NZ - it's good to hear your thoughts as always, I appreciate the detailed reply. This is possibly a case of me saying "And another thing..." after you've left the room but I'll leave my response on here to say a little more about my strategy. I'd like to visit this in a couple of weeks time to see if I've stuck to my guns ...

I believe that we are both heading in a similar direction with the Sweet Spots strategy - we're just looking at different price ranges. I think historically, the value-for-money 3rd def / 4th mid / 3rd striker options have emerged at 4.0 in defense and 6.0 or less in mid/attack roles. However, as you've pointed out - the price ranges are a bit different this year. In this, I believe that you personally have the advantage of being relatively new to FPL since you started a few weeks into the 2014-15 season - so you're less biased than many of us. The same holds with 3-4-3 as well - most of us are going that route as it's been shown over the years to work best in the long term. Maybe we could all be a bit more open to change here.

With regard to the "heavy hitters on short notice" point : I think we have to agree to disagree on this. If the situation comes up like GW1 with Haz(c) 50%+ against Swansea at home or Aguero(c) with good chunk of ownership against Watford - it is simply a rank-killer to go without. I would like to think this isn't motivated by fear (as Jonty mentioned in his HT today) - it is simply the logical thing to do to avoid a huge rank drop and subsequent hasty changes to your team. The problem with players like Haz/Aguero/Sanchez is that they are priced in a way that you will almost certainly need two transfers to bring them in. Like you said, it's not the end of the world to take a hit : my point is that you need to plan for ways to bring them in without multiple hits like -8 or -12, or being forced to use a WC.

That brings me to the WC : I see many FFS managers want to play the WC in week 4 (with good reasons). However, many others are worried about going from GWs 4 to GW 30/34 without WC (it seems pretty universally agreed that we want to play our 2nd WC in the lead up to a DGW). I subscribe to the latter view - I find my team slowly descending into chaos as we approach the Christmas fixtures and I usually clean it up with an early Jan wildcard, only for it to again get chaotic towards March/April around DGW time. This time, my strategy at the moment is to play WC1 just before festive fixtures time and WC2 like everyone else around DGW time. Consequently I want to bring in the heavy hitters with only FTs and minor hits around GW4 or whenever I need them.

And the OP is not at all about a fast start - in fact I can say from experience that I completely missed the GW8 boat last season when every man and his dog had Aguero(c) but still managed to do okay over the season. A fast start is a bonus but not the end of the world - I still feel that the most important thing is to be flexible when it comes to emerging budget options and known heavy hitters during ObviousCaptain weeks.

Not a thing that I disagree with in there. 🙂

Discussing the pricing for this season is interesting. I wrote about GKs and defenders in my post because the changes there are very obvious. But with the exception of the 5-7 players that have been protectively priced it seems to me that the range has been narrowed everywhere - the floor has risen and the ceiling has descended.

Fabregas had a very good FPL season yet has a starting price lower than last time? 8.5 as a distinctly "premium" level for midfielders? It looks to me that by compressing price bands FPL are trying to encourage more variance in teams, something many on here wanted to see actually. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

On your 2nd point, "agreeing to disagree" suits me fine. I don't think there is a right answer. If the game has been subtly changed through price structures we will need to wait and see what strategy is more effective. One thing I would say, however, is that I am far less worried about ownership now than I would be in the last quarter of the season. Until March at least I will be playing for points and not worrying what anyone else is doing.

Wildcard strategy - well I don't know what is the "right" one. But I do know what I plan to do and when. I have a shape for the season which I will adjust as time goes on. I think it is better to have a plan that you adjust than no plan at all. I will be able to bring in the "heavy hitters" I want at suitable times. It's just that for me my initial plans don't include an 11.0+ midfielder. I don't need Hazard's points. I just need points.

Cheers, and good luck with tinkering in the lead up to GW1.. I especially like your point about FPL towers creating tighter price bands to make transfers in the same bracket easier - thus increasing variance across teams. I hadn't looked at it that way but its a good big picture view

"2. Whether it is possible to bring in heavy hitters on short notice like Sanchez, Aguero and Costa without having to take multiple hits or being forced to WC"

How does only having 0.5 ITB allow you to do that with that template?

For instance how can I upgrade to Aguero with 2 FT's?

Defoe to Rooney and Milner to Mane improves your team so much. Why did you think this was a good idea?

i had haz (fab) & rooney (giroud) before. with money to upgrade rooney -> aguero. but then i thought i wanna start with fab instead of hazard. i also realized that giroud is better than rooney. now i have loads of money! but i will also need it, defoe & jrod only short term options

As long as you have addressed these issues and have a flexible plan your team is set. It's all speculation with a bunch of stats till they kick off!

Get Schwarzer in goal instead of McCarthy, so you never have a non playing goalie.

struggling to get excited by the news. Probably because it seems like United are preparing for life without De Gea and there just seems to be an air of negativity about this.

Also...if this is the surprise signing LVG was talking about, pretty udnerwhelming i must say.

Argentina's National goalkeeper. Played in the world cup final . Bags of experience and also on a free transfer.
I think it's a brilliant signing. He is only 28

Morning all, quick A or B vote please:

    A: Milner and Costa
    B: Oscar and Kane

The obvious 'template' answer is 'A' but I quite like the differential of Oscar and Kane seems to have been completely ignored in most RMTs on here for some reason. The rest of my mid/attack is:

    Mane, Wally, Ritchie, Sterling, XXXX
    Rooney, XXXX, Deeney

    Thoughts would be much appreciated

Hi, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from yesterdays RMT.

    Giroud, Wallcott, Ozil. Overkill?

Giroud's record against his first 5 opponents is awesome (someone posted it yesterday), and unless Arsenal sign another striker, he's nailed on at the start of the season at least.

Walcott has a high points ceiling and is my GW1 captain. Short-term pick, though.

Ozil has pre-season form and should prove extremely good value at 8.5.

For the record I have doubled up on Saints attack as well with Pelle/Mane.

Rooney/Fabregas are my other attacking picks.

    Fab, Walcott (C), Ozil, Mane
    Rooney, Giroud, Pelle

High-risk, high-reward strategy I think by playing the fixtures. Deciding to go without Hazard as although his ownership is high, if he doesn't produce some big hauls quickly, he's likely to be transferred out by the masses as there are a lot of premium midfielders (8.5+) who have the potential to score well. Also don't fancy captaining him against first few opponents.

I feel the distribution of funds in my team will help me jump on any bandwagons and even aid a smooth transition to get Aguero/Sanchez/Hazard.

I imagine there will be some criticism here.

    Morning. Dallying about.

    Myhill Guzan
    Clyne Ivan Darm O’Shea 4.0
    Haz Ozil Chadli Sterling Mata
    Sakho Benteke Ighalo

Sterling going to be up top this season? Mid rotation with possible liquidation for big striker.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Sergio Romero is a total headcase of a goalkeeper. Loves to come flying off his line to act as a sweeper. That's not to say that he isn't a talented shot stopper, but he's definitely prone to more than the odd moment of madness.
