With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

Surely Cazorla if the ARS 8.5s? Has penalties - if he gets 5-6 over the season, that's 25-30 points head-start (plus associated BPs) over the others.

    GM 🙂

I have set up a team for the first 4 GW's - which I think is pretty great. Any rating or comments appreciated.

    Schmeichel/Ruddy
    Azp - Cedric - Huth / Francis (4.0)
    Silva - Fab - Ozil - Depay (4.5)
    Rooney - Sakho - Kane

Keepers: Keepers rotate OK+ for the 4 first weeks.
Defense: Chelsea cover + Southampton cover + LEI/BOU rotation. All this for a cheap price of £32.0
Midfield & Attack: All decent potential big hitters? Even with £0 ITB, there is a lot of other alternatives here...

    Cheers all!

    I'm on this defence atm

    Azpi, Jenkinson/ Francis, Huth/ O'Shea

I was on Huth/ Williams but wanted the extra 0.5 in attack so found this.

Jenkinson and Francis rotate well for first 8. Huth and O'Shea up to week 7 when both Jenkinson and Francis have good games so that's not a problem.

    Schmeichel, Myhill
    Ivanovic Terry Fonte Clyne Baker
    Henderson Hazard Ibe Walcott Wanayama
    Rooney Deeney Giroud

I had few plans... first, Benteke was in the team, not Deeney.
But, then again... someone has to be our Austin this season, or it wouldn't be interesting.
So, Deeney, Wilson, Deeney, Wilson... Deeney has better name. Last name.
Had Costa. Not satisfied with pre season, at all. And Chelsea defence brings a lot of points.
Other options were, ofc, upgrading Deeney to Sakho.
Had my brother Cabaye in the team, but not enough ITB, so Ibe is worth a risk. Upgraded Cabaye to Walcott, and got Deeney.

And last problem is, Aguero 😀
I hope he will not play first few games (sorry Kun) so I could get him in the team, without rushing.
If he is starting season, than transfer window will be open these 13 days.

I beg to differ about rotation in Spurs team.

Rotation will be between Mason/Bentaleb/Dembele, Townsend/Lamela.

Chadli, Kane, Eriksen are safe and are the quality players that will get Spurs results.

I would say that the minimum requirement of a 4.5 is that they are nailed on, with attacking potential a bonus. Anya may be more likely to score or assist than the other 4.5s, but he doesn't fulfil his main duty - being a guaranteed starter. That's personal preference though - you may not wish to go for the likes of Wanyama, Fletcher, Whelan or Surman, who for the most part have a 3 point ceiling.

Hello DZ, we meet again. 🙂

How essential is Ivanovic? He has a good record of scoring early in the season and is owned by more than 30% of the game.

Without him, I have the following team in place.

    Courtois / Henessey

    Cedric - Bassong/Whittaker - Williams - Huth - OShea

    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey - Ritchie - Anya

    Costa - Rooney - Sakho

I like the defense since it gives me 3 home games every week (including Courtois), but Ivanovic will obviously rejig it all.

    Thoughts?

Great team. Ivanovic is definitely not essential - spending 7% of your budget on a defender is quite a big commitment. I also expect Ivanovic to be a bit less attacking at the start of this season as Chelsea's opening fixtures are a bit harder than they have been in previous seasons.

        Thanks Innsie.

I do agree with you. It's a little too much and I expect Ivanovic to stay back in case Moses gets a few games early in the season. Looked really attacking in the friendlies, especially against PSG.

Ivanovic was given the freedom mostly cause Oscar/Willian were a bit poor going forward from the flanks.

Indeed, Willian is in the team as he has fantastic work rate and always helps out defensively. This is what allows Ivan to attack so much.

            Exactly.

What do you make of our title chances this year? We have been pretty inactive this season in the market. But Moses and Traore look like new signings already.

I sadly haven't managed to watch any of our friendlies so far this preseason but I'm not sure Moses is good enough for us... Traore certainly has potential but it may be a season to soon for him to make an impact in the PL.

Our inactivity in the transfer market is a little worrying, especially as City and United have made a big signing or two. Arsenal look very strong too if they can stay relatively injury free. I've got all the confidence in the world in Mou though. In saying that, a big signing would be nice!

I did like the thought of Pedro joining us, but then Mourinho coming out and saying no one joins until a winger leaves has killed all the speculation.

Even I was of the opninion Moses isn't that good for us, but he has really impressed me in these friendlies. Scored one against PSG and made another which should have been a goal in all seriousness, also tracked back a lot.

    6. Geordienufc1

I would argue he's certainly not essential. There are all sorts of reasons why he may have scored a couple of goals at the start of the season in the past couple of years, but I don't see that as a reliable indicator for the season to come. I think Ivan will do well, but I think I will be going Azpi myself.

Having said that, looking at your team I'd like at least one 5.5 mil + ideally. Gives you more flexibility, and a reliable starter from teams more likely to keep CS. Not to say Swansea and Soton can't do that, but you're just not going to want to play them when they come up against City for example, where in the case of Chelsea defenders, a more difficult fixture almost makes them more attractive.

Rest looks very nice though. Not sure about Anya, but there aren't many great options so not really a problem.

to make the counter-argument, fact is that Ivanovic and Terry scored in the 170s last year, with the next players showing up in the low 140s. an extra 1.0 or 1.5 over the 5.5-6.0 options for an extra 30+ points doesn't seem crazy, and might even be prudent or "essential". i've gone back and forth because it is a lot of money for a defender, but how confident are you that you can get an additional 30+ points by spending that money elsewhere? obviously, there is no guarantee that they will duplicate last year's returns, and there could easily be a drop in attacking returns, but they currently stand significantly ahead of all of the other defenders that i'm finding it hard to ignore.

    Is Ivanovic worth the premium?

These are the fixtures Ivan got attacking returns in last season: bur, LEI, eve, tot, NEW, swa, avl, BUR, SOU, lei

Ivan got 4g, 6a in total. Against top 10 sides he got 0g, 3a. He also got 2g, 2a.

In the first 8 games this season Chelsea play 4 teams from the top 10 last season + west brom away. They don't play any promoted teams.

So if he struggls for attacking returns early in the season why pick him over a cheaper Azpilicueta?

Exactly. I made this point in my Ivan v Azpi post last week.

People quickly assume Ivanovic always starts the season well because 'it's the start of the season', when if they look a little deeper they can see Chelsea have had very easy opening fixtures over the last 3 seasons. This season, they're a lot more difficult, and I expect Ivan to make less forward runs, especially against City in GW 2. I'm not even a tiny bit tempted to start with him.

If you generally believe Azpi is a better pick than Ivanovic then just go with that.

Why should it matter what anybody else does?

These posts that constantly justify picking player X over more expensive player Y always strike me as more about the person picking the cheaper player trying to justify to themselves that they're really making the right choice as opposed to telling the people who've picked the more expensive player that they've chosen the wrong one.

Silva's stat towards end of last season is sick.

I'm actually afraid of not owning him. Might be more than not owning Hazard

Hard to judge with Sterling around.

But ... has he maintained his form? Will Sterling steal some of his points?

I'm not afraid of not owning him, though I love him as a player. Perhaps my favourite player to watch in the premier league at the moment. The point is though that:

      1) Early fixtures aren't fantastic
      2) Relatively few people have him

Which is why I'm not afraid of owning him. Come GW4 onwards however, welcome to the team.

I'm not WCing in GW 4, but will get Kun. And I'd like to double up GW4 onwards.

So most likely, I'll get a City mid since the start.

Fair call. He's not a bad shout by any means.

I spose another advantage to him is his easily downgradeable should it become apparent that say Sterling or Yaya is the city mid to have, though rather more difficult to attain should it be the other way around.

What do people think of my goalkeepers and defence?

    GK: Butland, Ruddy

DF: Cedric, Williams, Lescott, Matthews/O'Shea/Coates, Francis

I am really stuck on which Sunderland defender to go for. O'Shea was a regular last season but is getting on. Coates played most games under Advocaat last season. Matthews gets a ridiculous amount of assists (20 in last 3 seasons).

I have 1 million in the bank but was hoping to keep that to help me afford Aguero or Sanchez when they're back.

Think you need a 5.5 arsenal or azpi to play week in week out. personally like to have at least two mainstays in defence!

I was definitely considering Dave (I'm a Chelsea fan, so I love the guy). Who should I take out for him though? I'm thinking Williams? Because Southampton are really good defensively and West Brom will be too under Pulis.

That looks very good. Probably going to start with a defender and Yaya with Aguero joining them in GW4.

Fair enough, the fixtures aren't that bad at all but i do think they could be a lot better. I'm sure you could get a lot higher +ves from other oppositon of Chelsea.

WBA aren't going to be rated highly because their attacking threat is limited. Chelsea have done very well against Arsenal in recent years.

I must admit to not being particularly well acquainted with your system of ranking fixture difficulty, though I think the point being made, particularly with regard to Ivan is that they are "relatively" more difficult than previous years in which he has made a great attacking start, and that therefore the supposed trend is less likely to be recurring this year.

I don't think it's being said that Chelsea have particularly bad fixtures, just that they're not overly welcoming either for allowing Ivan the freedom to roam up and down the flank as he has done in the past against weaker promoted opponents from the off.

Also, Ivan may edge Azpi a little but by how much? And the 1m that can be spent elsewhere.
