Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

Regarding Palace mids.. why no love for Puncheon @6? Should play in the hole(Cabaye in the double pivot with McArthur look more likely) and on set pieces.. I know people are saying he'll have to share set pieces with Cabaye.. but he did that anyway with Jedinak and Bolasie last season since he is a left footer! Still gonna be on every set piece which requires a left foot and 0.5 cheaper than Bolasie/Cabaye. As nailed on as they come too despite whatever doubts ppl on here have about his gametime

Could start off with a flyer vs norwich and Villa in the first 3. City at home and spurs away could be gold for Palace considering they are a counterattacking side.. Smooth sailing after that admittedly bumpy start too

Thats a good argument for Puncheon and I guess that does make him a good prospect for 6m. Fixtures aren't great to begin with but could be part of an attacking rotation at that price.

0.5... i do love Cabaye though!
However, palace are a counter attacking side with the likes of Zaha/Bolasie/Puncheon/Striker always the most likely to benefit. Cabaye is great.. but i'd like to see how much of a threat he looks from playing in the pivot first

That's another FFS myth which has been taken as gospel on this site. Puncheon only ever takes Left footed set pieces and will continue to do so. Beyond me how fpl priced him @just 6 million

fixtures rough, some set pieces will go to Cabaye - that's the feedback I got.

The same set pieces that went to JediKnight and Bolasie will go to Cabaye. Puncheon holds the monopoly on anything left footed at Palace. And Pardew loves him. Quite fancy him to do well over the first 3 fixtures. Better than Ritchie at the same price atleast..
nor ARS AVL for a proven attacker from an experienced side
        vs
        AVL liv whm for Ritchie..
Could always swap for Ritchie after/plan a rotation

With attackers you should not look too far ahead.. in his first 3 he has
nor and VILLA and atleast they play Arsenal at home making it two home games. in that period Ritchie for eg. has VILLA and away games vs whm and pool which will be difficult for a promoted side. Yet most everyone is punting on him. tbh apart from chelsea away Palace's fixtures dont look too bad. the games vs Arsenal/City/Spurs will actually suit their style of counter attacking football

Puncheon is at his best behind the striker and Expect Cabaye to sit deep and create chances galore for the likes of Puncheon/Bolasie/Zaha.. I cant wait to see Palace play this year tbh! personally i'd find a way to upgrade one of your budget strikers to sakho, you're likely to get much more reliability from a (semi) proven, nailed on mid-table striker vs. a rotation of two unproven promoted strikers. good team in general though.

      • 16 Years

that's an interesting team...I thought of doing the same thing with a cheaper defence and only 1 cheap striker...basically deeney as first sub instead of Wanyama

but I changed my mind...you'll probably want various hot strikers sooner rather than later...and you need to think who you might be willing to sell to get them

i may be wrong but i believe last season kun being out necessitated silva moving into a central position, and his assist tally hugely declined whereas his goals tally hugely increased. it probably improved his output a little overall. sterling is a slightly unknown quantity who's yet to have a truly, uh, sterling fpl season, so i think silva's worth the extra.

i don't like either much which is why i ended up going 3-4-3 with three big midfield hitters and chadli. i don't think possessing more than one 7.0 mid or having a 5-6.5 mid is very alluring this season.

          Yea Mane Sakho definitely.

I honestly don't think Lens will make a big difference to the Sunderland attack. but perhaps with Matthews/PVA as attacking fullbacks, could split defenders more. He's got good fixtures and BPL pedigree...so i can see why he's tempting.

Merseyside Red got me thinking about Skrtel yesterday. Home fixtures are fantastic, though they do have shite away games to start the season.

Any Skrtel/Clyne owners here? What's your strategy with them - play week in week out, or rotate? At 5.5m, seems abit pricey to rotate.

Besides going for the 3 5 2 route this year I believe I have a balanced side, but rotating forwards.
Bearing the above in mind how do I move from the side I have to accommodate a big hitter as captain?
Aguero springs to mind but I have no Costa, Hazard, Alexis. Is this a dangerous ploy.

    Schmei/ Hennesey(if he moves)
Azpi Kosi Kollarov (Williams cover) Targett
    Wally Ozil Fab Silva Chadli
Rooney Deeney, Wilson rotating most GW's.

Would need some opinions on my draft. Think both Özil and Mata are in for big seasons, but i still struggle a bit between mata vs depay. Depay is unproved but might be used as a striker (?) and mata seems to really have settled in united and is on pens and set pieces.

    Panti (McCarthy)

    Koscielny Azpi Clyne (Huth Targett)

    Hazard Mata Henderson Özil (wanyama)

    Wilson Giroud Rooney

Think Van Gaal will give Depay more consistent minutes and attacking role due to his speed and directness which Utd lack otherwise.

Morning gents, since i'm going on holiday this friday i won't be doing much tinkering anymore next week. My only concern at the moment is if i should scrape a million somewhere to upgrade rudd to a playing goalie and targett to a 4.5. Rest looks fine for me. I think i've given myself the flexibility to jump on any early wagons and get aguero in for wk4. Anyway here's how it looks

    Ruddy (rudd)
    Mert-Cédric-oshea-hutton-targett
    Albrighton-Ritchie-hazard-ozil-Wally
    Costa-Rooney-sakho

I like sakho's home fixtures and spent an extra 0.5m for my 5th to get albrighton who can cover for sakho's terrible away fixtures. Burning question for me. Leave it like this or downgrade somewhere in the front 8 and spent 9 instead of 8.5 on goalies and upgrade targett?

If you had Chadli, An expensive rotation but he more than covers for Sakho. Haz and Costa sticks your team a little out of balance IMO.

If Ruddy's dropped Rudd should come in so I see no pressing need to upgrade there. I'm not loving Hutton in there and make a check on Costa's fitness before you depart.

upgrade keeper to 4.5 and downgrade albrighton to 4.5

better to have rotation option of keepers rather than outfield players IMO. Sakho could quite easily score goals away from home.

i wouldn't bench a player like sakho whoever he's playing...so there's £0.5m and you get the other cash from cedric
