The end of pre-season is nearly in sight for the community as they fine-tune their Gameweek 1 sides and eagerly await the start of the new Premier League campaign. This week we ramped up our support for those needing their teams rated and also took an in-depth look at player value. Meanwhile, in our hot topics, the community was full of advice on midfield heavy hitters and rotation strategies. Elsewhere, one of our most prolific Members table creators has been paying close attention to the attacking intent of defenders.

The Community Articles

Our support for those struggling to construct a Gameweek 1 side picked up the pace this week with the launch of our first live Rate My Team surgeries, where our team of moderators, along with the community, were on hand to answer the key questions ahead of the season’s start. The first session on Wednesday also featured a live Scoutcast where Mark and myself looked in detail at your draft teams. Keep an eye out next week when we have further surgeries planned.

Finding value is key to securing the best initial 15 in Fantasy Premier League and Why Always Mesut was on hand with some number crunching to find the best bargains in the game.

For those looking to construct the more complex 25-man squads needed for the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game Djenzio opened up a community surgery to help out. Meanwhile, for those playing in a draft league, The Cisco Kid‘s top three tips for surviving draft day will prove key reading.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

To construct the perfect Gameweek 1 side, each Fantasy manager has their own dos and don’t list, as we discovered in our discussion on getting the best start possible.

There were further tips for taking pole position in the race for Fantasy football glory from Enzo the Baker and for those submitting RMTs, Innsie offered this must-read set of rules to ensure you get the help you need.

Sticking with RMT support, Giggs Boson was on hand to sum up the key questions that need answering before we perfect our starting XIs. He also attempted to quell some of the enthusiasm amongst the community that Raheem Sterling is generating after his move to Manchester City.

There is also plenty of enthusiasm for the wealth of options in the Arsenal midfield, with our discussion on the Gunners revealing that many are happy to double up on their attacking assets.

With more than half of FPL managers owning Eden Hazard, the Chelsea midfielder is another much-heralded prospect for 2015/16. Opinion was nonetheless divided in our discussion as to whether going without the Belgian enhances or ruins a Gameweek 1 side.

Another issue to consider when searching for the best Gameweek 1 side is home and away rotation, particularly when picking your cheaper players. But, asked Smurf, are we too quick to put our faith in this strategy?

Another popular strategy is to focus on penalty takers. No Money took the role of naysayer in the debate on this issue, as he unearthed a lack of spot kicks amongst minnows in particular. For those sticking to this policy, our hot topic on the latest set piece takers to emerge during pre-season will prove vital reading.

This season’s introduction of ‘chips’ has the potential to transform FPL. When we asked what other ‘chips’ you would like to see Waitinginthelonggrass revealed he would like to see all points doubled, while Andy85wsm would like to see a top up chip, to guarantee 60 points in one week, for better or worse.

Finally, Gameweek 1 can be the trickiest of weeks to predict, with the unexpected frequently destroying our carefully-laid plans. Demi dropped by to spark up this lively discussion on your wild and wonderful 2015/16 predictions.

The Members Tables

One of our regular table constructors Vougiedipond has turned his attention to offensive defenders for his latest set of figures. Southampton fans are advised to pay close attention to the second best defender in this list.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

So Ritchie hasn't done anything at all in their 6 (including the current) pre season matches.

    1) Is he unfit or just terribly out of form?
    2) Does his pre season form making any of you double guess his place in your teams?

He is never going to be a good pick...one day a few weeks ago somebody posted some stats about him and then people put him in there team...then others saw that and started doing it as well without really questioning it and now he is ridiculous popular for an average midfielder in a poor side

I think people here really underestimate the importance of Walcott, assuming he is a sub who may only get to play if Giroud and/or Sanchez are missing or (in Girouds case) out of form. I expect him to start even if both are fit as long as he is in form himself. Massive player both in fantasy and for Arsenal

I'm on Trigg's side. Wally returned on the bench for three matches, played limited in the following two, missed the next one, played for 70 against Villa and scored, players 12 the following match, played 72 against Leicester and scored, then spent another 3 games on the bench, played one, benched for another 3, then played the remaining 6 games, but only played for more than 25 minutes in one match.

didnt get a look in, I would say, isnt true. if you are looking at points per minute, he was pretty damn good. and that injury was very bad. Wenger wants him for the next 4 years (he signed a contract today, 140k a week) why put him out for 90 minutes against some random team at the end of the season? He has high hopes and future in mind. starting on the 8th

I see more love for Wally than almost any other player on these boards. He's a fanboy (regardless of whether earned or not. I cannot say from the extent to which I have not followed Theo's career) .

Walcott should really be a mainstay on the right wing, as he was when he was arsenal's most important player towards the end of the 2012/13 season. On his day can get a hat trick, and if he plays 90 minutes i think is absolutely sure to get at least one chance, i think he's deadly and wenger has stockpiled too many midfielders so would rather play ramsey on the wing rather than walcott. With cazorla and coquelin good in the middle and ozil the no10, even with sanchez unfit i don't think walcott is that sure to start. Walcott seems both keen to play and keen to increase his wage, and wenger resents his greed. I wonder about the assurances walcott got about playing time because he was definitely being punished with the lack of playing time towards the end of the season. I don't think walcott is a centre forward because he can't hold the ball up but he is along the forward line making runs, and i hope wenger values him !

After signing his new deal, Baker said: “I have been with the club since I was just eight years old so I am very happy to continue my career here. It’s my home. It’s my club.

“I feel I have progressed and can carry on getting better here in claret and blue.

“I am determined to impress the gaffer and get in that side.

“The competition is going to be fierce here at centre-half but that’s what the gaffer wants. There’s a lot of choice for him. But you can’t do well as a club without competition for places.”

Average FPL points 2014-15 by player price and position.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Qk4QrJ-jJ3M0ZiWUliUlZFM2s/view?usp=sharing

The aim here is to highlight risk vs reward in picking players at each price point. High risk would be selecting a player where the average total points for that price and position is far less than the maximum total points.

    For example:

Last season, one midfielder now priced at 7.5m, scored 158 points (Chadli). However, the average points return for 7.5m of your budget invested in midfield, was just 88 points.

A low risk example, is selecting a forward that costs 8m. Based on last season's performances, you can expect any forward costing 8m to return nearly 150 points.

    Some notable observations

    - Forwards priced at 10.5m may be poor value.
    - Mids and forwards priced 9.5 - 10 offer great value.
    - Low risk in selecting defenders priced 6.5m+.
    - Picking the right budget goalkeeper before the season has started is high risk.
    - Selecting 1 or 2 mids at 8.5m gives you low risk / high reward, with the flexibility to switch to the bandwagon at that price.

Morning lads lets talk BAPS 🙂

Using the recent saints game which player would have have most likely got the BAPs?

    Mane (midfielder) 2 assists
    Tadic (midfielder) 1 goal
    Pelle (forward) 1 goal

I know BAPs factor in other aspects but assists and goals are still heavily weighted, so let's assume the other stats are similar.....
