Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud grab a goal apiece as Arsenal defeat City at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil provides a pair of assists and has now produced points in 11 successive Gameweeks. Sergio Aguero lasts just over an hour for the beaten visitors, with Yaya Toure’s late strike proving scant consolation.

Ozil Guides Gunners to Victory

Arsenal moved to within two points of the summit by way of a 2-1 home win over fellow title-chasers Manchester City at the Emirates last night. Mesut Ozil delivered attacking returns for the 11th Gameweek in succession, turning provider for both of the Gunners’ goals. The Germany international has now amassed an incredible 15 assists in 16 league outings, positioning him seven clear of Gerard Deulofeu (eight assists) on the distribution front.

Theo Walcott set the tone for the hosts with a searing strike in 33rd minute, while Olivier Giroud doubled their advantage with his seventh goal in as many matches – illuminating the wealth of viable routes into Arsenal’s attack. Aaron Ramsey didn’t trouble the scoreboard at the Emirates but was the only midfielder among his team to card a shot inside the box (three), illustrating his penchant for late runs into the area.

Given that the north Londoners enjoy two favourable home ties (BOU, NEW) beyond a trip to Southampton, the Gunners’ chief protagonists look well placed to perpetuate their purple patch. Only Everton (eight) have shipped more goals than the Saints (seven) during the last four Gameweeks, while Bournemouth and Newcastle United rank joint-second for goals conceded (32) this term, which bodes well for Arsenal’s attacking prospects.

After the match, Arsene Wenger admitted that Ozil had struggled with illness for most of the week, and with Alexis Sanchez suffering a minor setback to his hamstring injury, the Gunners boss is keen to court caution with his players’ fitness:

“He (Ozil) had a chest infection for the week and was in bed. He had only one training session yesterday and for a guy who could not prepare well he has done very well physically. I’m a bit cautious because we have lost three or four players recently so I have to be cautious a little bit….He (Sanchez) had had a slight one (setback)… he planned to be on the bench tonight but he is so keen he got a little bit of a pain and we didn’t take a gamble. I think he will be back January 10. Christmas period – you can’t count him.”

City’s Away Woes Continue

Save for a 15-minute spell at the end of the encounter – inspired by Yaya Toure’s languid strike – Manchester City looked short of ideas, culminating in their third defeat in five fixtures. Toure has served up attacking returns (two goals and one assist) in three of the last six Gameweeks but looks a far cry from the dominant Fantasy asset that chalked up 20 goals and nine assists during the 2013/14 campaign.

The travails of Manuel Pellegrini’s troops in the final third are denoted by the fact they failed to register a solitary big chance and rank second-bottom for big chances (three) across the last four Gameweeks. Indeed, Kevin De Bruyne’s 27% ownership have suffered in the form of three successive blanks, while the 3,409 early Sergio Aguero adopters were left scratching their heads as the rusty Argentine mustered just two attempts against Arsenal before being withdrawn just after the hour-mark.

After the match, Manuel Pellegrini conceded that Aguero – who played for just the third time since Gameweek 8 last night – is far from full match sharpness right now:

“I think that it was important for Sergio to return to the team. Maybe he needs a few more matches to return to his form but it was important for the team that he played tonight”.

Notwithstanding the scoreline, Bacary Sagna scooped three bonus points by virtue of his assist and defensive efforts. Speaking of the Sky Blues rearguard, they’ve now conceded in five consecutive league clashes and recorded just two shut-outs in the past 12 Gameweeks. It’s safe to say that Vincent Kompany’s stock has risen immeasurably over the past two months, while the Fantasy appeal of Man City’s other rearguard starters has diminished considerably.

Ultimately, Sunderland’s visit this weekend will act at a litmus test to ascertain the extent of Man City’s malaise before they travel to Leicester and Watford – given that they’ve picked up just two points from their last five away fixtures, scoring twice along the way, some Fantasy managers will be thinking twice over loading up on the Etihad outfit right now.

Arsenal always bombs it in the first season half, and always tanks it in the second. That's basically how the story goes right?

Not really, the amount of times I hear 'Arsenal's worst start to the season' and the amount of times we go on a great run for the last 10 games to scrape fourth spot means it's actually the other way around. The one time we bottled it was a couple of years ago when we signed Ozil

What the... 73 points with Mahrez captain and a red arrow 🙁

Already used my FTs... Now confused on who to bench and who to play.

    Butland McCarthy
    Bellerin Alderwiereld Kolarov Moreno Dawson
    Mahrez KDB Ozil Barkley Deulofeu
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

    a) Which 3 defenders to play?
    b) Who from the front 8 to be benched?

Rough- Did not sell Mane as planned and because I had him and did not see a Spurs cs I sold Sagna to Dawson instead.

So this led to Sagna -> Dawson. Benched Toby Alderweild and Lloris. 19point loss to if I played those 3.

This week, sold Kane, benched Alli and Toby, 18 points bench, plus missed Kane goal

Swapped Mahrez C to Lukaku C at 1.59

Knocked out of Last man standing last week and would have been knocked out this week, dropped from 100k to 450k in 4 weeks

So I finally wildcarded and boy was the long wait worth it!

Out went e.g. Vardy (8 pts), Ighalo (13 pts), Kane (6 pts) and Özil (11 pts).

In came e.g. Agüero (2 pts), Ramsey (2 pts), Coutinho (2 pts), Silva (1 pt).

Also my shiny and new defence did well: Butland (1 pt), Dawson (1 pt), Jones (1 pt), Dier (6 pts). Except I benched Dier and played Moreno (1 pt).

So definitely a gameweek to remember and be proud of.

The only successes were Mahrez (15 pts) who I already had pre-WC + Giroud (8 pts) and Lukaku (6 pts).

          danny rose.

started the season with him and he gets a late unannounced injury before gw1. he also misses gw2 and 3 so i sell him in gw4. he starts gw4 and gets a clean sheet.

he disappears again until gw9 where he returns with a clean sheet and 3 bonus. i buy him back, predicting he'll be first choice. he starts the next 4 games for me where tottenham concede 1 in every match, very frustrating, especially the 4-1 win over west ham where they were 4-0 up and coasting, and home to villa as villa are villa.
i then bench him against chelsea and they get a clean sheet. i start him in the next two matches and they concede in both. then last gw tottenham get a clean sheet but he's ill and no where to be seen.

had him for 11 gameweeks and still no clean sheet from him. perfect dodging

Transfer was Barkley to Ramsey. That failed miserably.

Played the wrong one of Butland and Gomes. Again. For the 5th week in a row.

Smooth - In Walker we believe.

Rough - Keep convincing myself that Ighalo wouldn't score again. (for the umpteeth time) and failed. Also bought Moreno and Coutinho. =/

Smooth: My 94 points resulted in my 3rd big green arrow in 4 GWs, during which time I have risen from 619k to 179k. 😀

My front 7 and Alderweireld were template, but I also selected the right captain (Mahrez) and also had Gomes in goal (joint leading goalkeeper with Butland - why does the FFS Watchlist keep ignoring him?).

Seemed a bit disloyal though to be cheering on Ighalo and Gomes when they were beating Liverpool!

          Smooth...;

Sold Benteke for Lukaku and captained so at least got some points there.

          Rough...;

Nyom on the bench for the second week running coupled with another Moreno no show!
Rival captained Mahrez so still gained on me. Kane scored for me but his Ighalo got the brace!

Smooth: Selected Mahrez as my captain a week ago. 🙂

Rough: Somehow must have failed to hit confirm on my team at any point in the days afterwards because, on reading Mahrez had scored twice, I looked at my squad and discovered the captain's armband on Lukaku. What should have been a green arrow instead became a drop of 14,000 places. 🙁

Smooth : 1. First time captain Mahrez and he score well. Have Alli since he is just 5.0, also score well and now he is heading to 5.3 in just 3 weeks. Ighalo also serve me well.

Woe: So stubborn not to get Ozil before because i thinkbhe is expensive as I dont want to double up Arsenal midfielders . Im regret it.

I like how Wenger believes in his squad. He doesn't hesitate in giving Sanchez more time to recover from injuries.
Most managers would rush their stars back in order to be confident of 3 points. Aguero was in no way fully fit last night.

The difference though is that Aguero was clear of injury, Sanchez is still injured. Match fitness can only be attained from playing, my hunch is that when Sanchez is fully fit Wenger will start him in his first game not bring him off the bench.

I don't see myself getting through the week without doing kane > Kun unfortunately, and it will have to be accompanied by drinkwater to gosling/stanislas for a hit. Not sensible, i know i should hold, but the temptation will be too strong. Aguero does things to me that makes all rationale go out the window.

        @disable

Have you seen those cash leagues in sky, they leave them open until there's 14 games left. Any high placed player can just waltz in. Which idiot made that rule? 40th in the world walked in with 2 teams and only the top 4 get money

Yeah annyoing but Sky do it to maximise peoples money into skybet. Never noticed anyone do it before but maybe that's coz I was in that position myself. Should be changed IMO though

It doesn't affect skybet, he's been playing all year. All the other player's will give up more easily now, which would be of detriment to skybet

        Sagna gets 3 BPs?
That was a surprise. I can't recall many defenders leaking 2 goals and getting the maximum BPs before.

Does anyone else think that the way that price changes in FPL work is, well, unfair?
Why do you only get half of a price INCREASE, but when a players price DECREASES, you feel it immediately? Surely it should work the same in both directions.

        Case in point - Mahrez.
Say that you got Mahrez on week one, and now all of a sudden he gets injured for 6 weeks. If you take him out, you can no way afford to get him back once he's fit again, whereas somebody who got him in a week ago can not only afford to get him back later, but can also afford to replace him with somebody better than you. Therefore, surely you're being hindered and punished for being ahead of the game, whilst bandwagon jumpers have an advantage - the game rewards a fickle attitude and doesn't reward people who ACTUALLY KNOW THEIR STUFF, not well enough anyway.

        Thoughts?

I don't agree with any of this. Going with the herd at an early point of the bandwagon is not necessarily 'knowing your stuff'.

Lol sorry, meant for emphasis rather than shouting... haha.

                The important bits were:

                - Having both sold the same player, shouldn't both have the same amount to reinvest?

                - It doesn't work in the same way when players prices FALL. Why shouldn't it?

        My current team:

        Butland,
        Alderwelder, Dann, Konscielny,
        Mahrez, de bruyne, ozil, coutinho,
        Vardy, Lukaku, Kane

        Subs: Hennessey, Dawson, Deulofeu, Moreno
        1.0 ITB

I would like to transfer out coutinho.

Which one should I choose from these
        A) coutinho to ramsey
        B) coutinho to Alli
        C) other player
        D) save transfer

65 and I fell from 32k to 65k. Brutal, big scores from Mahrez and Ozil do absolutely nothing, and a big score from someone you don't own (Ighalo for me) just destroys you.

        DDG --- McCarthy

Bellerin --- Moreno --- Cresswell --- (VVD, Oxford)

Mahrez (vc) --- KDB --- Rambo --- Ozil --- (Ayew)

        Kane (C) --- Lukaku --- Vardy

        1.6m ITB 2FT

        Thoughts please?

Oxford to a West Brom defender and drop Moreno & save 1FT?

        DDG – McCarthy
        Kolorov – Bellerin – Toby – Moreno – Richards
        Ozil – KDB – Barkley – Mahrez – Hoolahan
        Kane – Lukaku – Vardy
        2FT’s, 3.4M ITB

Would you say I’m better off sorting Richards and Hoolahan before anything else? Was tempted by Barkley to Rambo but aware how important a nailed on 15 is at this time of the year.
