End of Season Awards – Goalkeepers

Our first end of season poll was released today as the Fantasy Football Scout awards for 2016/17 get underway.

We first focus on goalkeepers and you get just a single opportunity to vote for your top stopper of the season from an overall Fantasy point of view. Factors such as points, price and value across the various games should all be taken into account.

Although our polls tend to be weighted towards the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we’ve also considered each player’s performance in other offerings where clean sheet alone are essential to points output.

Before we get underway, let’s cast an eye back to last year’s team of the season and, in particular, the choice for number one goalkeeper:

2015/16 Fantasy Football Scout Team of the Season Review

Goalkeeper – Jack Butland

Defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Hector Bellerin, Christian Fuchs

Midfielders – Riyad Mahrez, Dele Alli, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil

Forwards – Jamie Vardy, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane

It’s fair to say that 2016/17 was one to forget for Jack Butland.

Afforded an initial 5.0 starting price on the back of 132 points in 2015/16, Stoke City’s number one was stuck in the treatment room for the vast majority of the season due to an ongoing ankle complaint.

Finally free from injury in Gameweek 34, Butland started the last five matches under Mark Hughes as the Potters’ Player of the Year Lee Grant dropped down to the bench.

Butland bagged 20 points over his subsequent five appearances, signing off in style with a 10-point tally in a 1-0 win away to Southampton in Gameweek 38.

A price of 5.0 or even 4.5 could be on the cards next time around, bringing Butland back into consideration as a viable option between the sticks once again.

While the Potters’ option failed to make the cut, here’s the rundown of those who made this term’s shortlist:

Tom Heaton

Burnley’s skipper and number one was the perfect fit as a “fire and forget” option for our squads.

Initially setting you back 4.5 as a route into the Championship winners’ defence, Heaton served up just 10 clean sheets yet still ended the season as the top-scoring keeper in FPL on 149 points.

His total of 21 bonus points was more than double any other goalkeeper, while he was also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million in the entire FPL game.

A price hike is clearly inevitable, but if Heaton can remain under the 5.5 mark, many will surely consider his services once again.

Thibaut Courtois

Winner of this season’s Golden Glove, the Chelsea stopper managed just one clean sheet in the first six Gameweeks before Antonio Conte’s switch to 3-4-3 transformed his side’s campaign.

Courtois chalked up a further 15 shut-outs in his subsequent 30 league outings to finish as the top-scoring keeper in both Sky Sports and the Telegraph games, although with just 13 save points over the season, he came in third in the FPL keeper standings.

The Belgian seems likely to stay at 5.5, yet with Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso offering a significant goal threat from the back, and Cesar Azpilicueta number one for bonus points among FPL defenders, Conte’s rearguard regulars are likely to keep Courtois out of consideration again.

Eldin Jakupovic

Starting the season priced at just 4.0, the Swiss international’s total of 23 points in the first five Gameweeks immediately made him a budget stopper option.

Jakupovic then fell out of favour under former manager Mike Phelan and it wasn’t until the arrival of Marco Silva in Gameweek 21 that he finally reclaimed a starting berth.

A very handy back-up keeper option, he finished the season with a 21.9% ownership and averaged 3.9 points per match in FPL – the same as Courtois, for example, and more than any other Hull City player.

Jakupovic’s heroics were not enough to prevent the Tigers from slipping into the Championship, but in just 22 appearances he claimed 18 additional save points, producing at least a single save point on 14 occasions.

It was somewhat telling that he was rested for the final day 7-1 hammering at home to Spurs. Essentially, Jakupovic conceded 36 goals in 22 starts (1.63 per match), whereas his Tigers’ rival David Marshall shipped 44 in 16 outings – that’s an average of 2.75 goals against by comparison.

Hugo Lloris

The Frenchman offered a secure route into the league’s most resilient defence, with Spurs conceding a mere 26 goals over the campaign.

Despite missing four matches, Lloris finished just six points behind Heaton at the FPL keeper summit and was runner-up in the Sky Sports and Telegraph offerings as well.

He was also placed second to Courtois for the Golden Glove by 15 clean sheets to 16, which was all the more frustrating for his owners as he conceded in each of the final four fixtures.

Like the Chelsea keeper, however, Lloris was overshadowed by his attack-minded defensive team-mates, with the likes of Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Ben Davies all thriving in Mauricio Pochettino’s 3-4-2-1.

Those tactics are likely to keep him off our radar once again as the Spurs wing-backs offer far more potential for points at either end of the pitch.

Lee Grant

With Jack Butland ruled out for months and deputy Shay Given conceding four times in three of the opening five Gameweeks, Mark Hughes’ decision to acquire Grant from Derby proved more than handy for Fantasy managers.

Initially listed at 4.0, Grant played every match from Gameweek 6-33 and offered us one of the most secure cut-price routes between the posts until Butland finally overcame his ankle injury to reclaim a spot in the Potters’ XI.

A total of 17 save points and nine clean sheets accrued from 28 appearances helped him to an average of 3.8 points per outing, though with Butland back in contention, Grant looks set to be on bench-warming duties next time out.

David de Gea

The most popular keeper in FPL, the United number one ended the campaign sitting in over 33% of squads.

De Gea missed just three league matches to offer the most secure route into a defence that served up 17 clean sheets – joint-top with Spurs for the season.

Unfortunately for his owners, United earned a shut-out on all three of those occasions – if he’d played and benefitted, the Spaniard would be sitting on 148 points, just one shy of Heaton at the summit.

Likely to remain at his initial price of 5.5 next time out, De Gea’s lack of value will struggle to convince many of us – particularly if team-mate Antonio Valencia breaks free from Jose Mourinho’s rotation policy.

And, of course, he might not even be at Old Trafford next season.

Jordan Pickford

Having wrestled the keeper’s jersey from Vito Mannone in Gameweek 3, the youngster was another 4.0 option to emerge in 2016/17.

Although his campaign was somewhat disrupted by an ankle injury between Gameweeks 19-25, Pickford’s heroics between the posts meant that he finished second only to Heaton for total saves (141 to 142).

The Sunderland stopper produced at least one save point in 23 of his 29 league outings to more than atone for a mere four clean sheets – Pickford provided a massive 36 points from saves alone.

His displays for the doomed Wearsiders already have the suitors circling and, if the rumoured move to Everton comes good, a possible cost of 5.0 could make him an appealing route into a defence that chalked up 13 clean sheets last time out.

So in terms of rotation, it was Liverpool last year, United this year. Next year, Arsenal?

Not so Mickey Mouse really. The UEFA EL is higher profile now it has a CL spot and it was always considered as a prestigious tournament in other countries anyway.

Sevilla, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid and Porto the last 4 teams to win it. Not a bad standard by any measure.

Congrats anyway. And to Andy. 🙂

I think the best way to sum this up would be that Man United have taken three steps back this season, and now they've taken a step forward. They're still behind where they should be, but it's a step in the right direction.

And while Woodward's wallet may be bursting, let's not forget how the recent big signings have gone. I think Ibrahimovic and Bailly are the only ones that have really worked out recently. Falcao, Di Maria, heck, even Pogba...not up to scratch. United would do well to go for some PL proven players.

Then again, it's hard to judge Citys defensive assets when Kompany isn't around. With him in the lineup it's a whole different ballgame.

Pep must realise he cannot rely on Kompany staying fit and must find a replacement. It never works. A few years ago United were nursing Rio through games and then he'd miss a couple and come back. it just causes instability in the whole side.

No there is a lot of work to do. Part of the problem is fans and neutrals think that its a 2-3 signing job.. United need to sign a lot more players and existing players need to change their attitude and work ethics.

Mourinho likes some of the older players previous managers have signed and has played some of them more effectively than the managers that signed them. E.g Rojo, Darmian, Fellaini, Herrera etc.

I think United needs more depth and the players need to be of world class quality so he can't use the excuse of injuries and tiredness and inexperience of the young 2nd team in the future. The Youngsters look good but aren't going to be great success straight away.

Griezemann and 4-6 other signings will be a step in the right direction. You have to remember we've already lost Bastian, Depay and Morgan, with Rooney, Young and De Gea also likely to follow out the door, and replace Carrick and Ibra. We also need to sign players to compete or winning the title and getting far in the champions league.

Arsenal's squad report ahead of FA cup final

    on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain…
Oxlade-Chamberlain is in contention because he’s back in training.

    on Alexis…
    Alexis is all right.

    on if Alexis will start…
We’ll see. He needs to go through some tests at the moment and we’ll see how well he comes out of that. Knowing the player, knowing his character and knowing his commitment to the club, which I don’t question at all, he’ll make absolutely everything to be fit for Saturday.

    on Shkodran Mustafi…
Mustafi, we still have some worries about. He’s still sick at the moment and has not trained yet.
    on Mustafi’s chances of playing…
I don’t know. I have to listen to medical people.

    on Gabriel…
Gabriel is out for six to eight weeks. We had a scare about his cruciate, but it’s only a knee ligament, so the positive is that he avoids surgery. He’s out until the beginning of August now, certainly.

    Well done to United.

I disagree with the pundits that CL is the next step. The next step is to look convincing and actually play like a top CL team.

Spurs, Chelsea, Liverppol, Arsenal, City have all had times this season when they looked the dogs Bllx. I don't recall a single game this season when we could say that about United. Let's hope they look the part early on next year.

Agree to an extent Wakey but lifting trophies is what every top professional aspires to above all else.. take Spurs as an example.. absolutely breathtakingly good all season and nothing to show for it.. the Kanes and Alli's etc etc will only accept that for so long before they need to start achieving.. i believe Spurs are good enough fwiw.. i also have no doubt that one Jose has a squad a lot more to his liking that the football will be a lot better just as it was at Chelsea Madrid etc etc

I hope he gets it right. A quality United side that plays good football AND lifts trophies is what the fans demand at United....and quite rightly. I used to enjoy watching them just like I like watching Spurs and Arsenal and co....hopefully they'll get their full mojo back soon.

Agreed - Man Utd have looked hard to break down but they have never looked like world beaters at any stage this season.

Honestly think they need a more creative playmaker ala Eriksen/Silva. Would be great if Mata can secure more regular minutes next season from an fpl perspective - particularly if he drops in price.

United really lack width. Better attacking fullbacks would help. It's a shame about Luke Shaw, forever getting crocked.

Ha...timing...I was just gonna comment that United need to be asking "Where's our Sanchez or Where's our Hazard"

I only watched the end of the game tonight and they did a fantastic job defensively but that won't, and shouldn't, cut it for United and their fans.

They need their Sanchez or Hazard...

The problem is that he isn't reliable. A lot of injuries combined with games where he is way below average.

But he can also play like a world class CB, did that for a majority of last season. Reckon West Ham or soton could be a good fit, if he leaves United

This post is dedicated to my fan. For part 1 of this wonderful novella, go here: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/05/24/end-of-season-awards-goalkeepers-2/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_15772268

If you enjoyed this post, please let me know by pretending to hate it in the comments.

GW27: City have DGW. Sold Lukaku after 3 weeks (perhaps just for 1 week) to get Aguero, and successfully avoid using TC. Sold Philips before GW28 because he stopped playing already. Sold Alli. Sold Friend after 4 starts and 10 pts from 9 GWs. Bought Sane (12 pts), Sterling (6 pts) and Mawson for my second triple hit of the season. I figure that the hits only cost me a couple of points overall, including the hits needed to remove players for the following week. From this point onwards, I have a deep squad with Maguire and Mawson as 4th and 5th defenders.
GW28: Started 11 players, but only got 40 pts. Kept Aguero (on bench), and sold Sterling, Sane and Ibra. Bought Mane (2 pts) and Firmino (0 pts) instead of King (18 pts). Bought Llorente (1 pt) instead of Lukaku (12 pts). Then Captained Mane in a 4-5-1. I stand by my decisions, which made sense for my plan at the time, but this was a horrible week, and I will later be punished several more times by both King and Lukaku. 6 hits in 3 weeks, and it’s becoming clear that the risks have not been worth it.
    GW29: Feeling sorry for myself.
GW30: Mane injured after 56 mins. Bought Valencia with DGWs in mind. Captained Siggy (MID) for 6 pts.
GW31: Sell Mane for Coutinho. Keeping faith in Liverpool double mids with decent fixtures. No Alli.
GW32: Sold Snodgrass after only 10 pts from 6 GWs. He outscores his replacement (JWP) over the next 2 GWs with an assist in each. OR 1.25M (Things about to kick off).
GW33: GR 5k. OR 999k. Finally sell Rose after 9 GWs on my bench (for Bavies). TC Kane seemingly pays off (36 pts), though he could have got double that. Last hit of the season (until final GW).
GW34: GR 89k. OR 760k (finally overtaken my GW1 rank). I was wrong: Captain Benteke was my best of the season (28 pts).
GW35: GR 99k. OR 607k. Bought King for the first time, and for 1 game only (11 pts).
GW36: GR 56k. OR 401k. WC played. Sell Valencia after only 4 starts from 7. Captain Cech pays off (32 pts), and my highest scoring player. 25 points on bench. Spend all week with KDB in my team (+ 1 of Kompany and Silva), but recent Spurs form and FFS community convince me to triple on Spurs attack, which means I only have Jesus (5 pts) and Sane (3 pts). KDB scores 17 pts. Silva gets 9 pts. Kompany gets 11 pts. Spurs triple attack gets a total of 6 pts. Regardless, I have closed the gap to ML leader by 106 pts in 4GWs. The gap is now 60 pts, and I’m feeling optimistic.
GW37: GR 52k. Ending my streak of 5 GRs in a row in top 100k. OR 199,886 (season best). Risen by 1.05M in 5 weeks. This is the big DGW. BB played. Anichebe injured after 36 mins in his first game, but I still managed 20 pts off the bench (170 pts in total). ML leader triple captains Sanchez who finally explodes. Now it’s 62 pts between me and him now.
GW38: I have to jeopardise OR for a chance at ML glory. My final triple hit involved selling Jesus, Kane, Alli and Monreal for Sturridge, Vardy, Coutinho and Azpi (triple Chelsea defense). The only player I have in common with ML leader is Cech. I captain my highest scoring player, Coutinho for 20 pts. Cahill doesn’t start, but Chelsea concede early. Cahill comes on after the goal to earn a CS. Vardy and Sturridge get a goal and assist between them, but Kane and Jesus get 4 goals and an assist between them on a massive last day. Overall the final week’s transfers cost me around 39 pts when compared to making 0 transfers. ML rival wins by 83 pts. My final OR is 236k.

Other mistakes: Never owned Heaton. No Capoue since GW4 WC. 26 hits in total (104 pts), including the final week’s rampage. Terrible season but with an exciting finale!

Cheers. No conscious change of approach. I went against the grain most of the season (not for the sake of differentials, but because I really though I could get more points). It didn't start working until GW33, but then on the second WC I finally went with the grain, because I was convinced it was slightly better than what I had planned, but I would have been better off going with my original plan on this occassion. Swings and roundabouts innit

Everyone agrees Manchester United could/should do better but also that it was better to win today than to lose.

Certainly playing better in the league would have been better but basically if you don't win the league the only other thing that matters is getting into the CL, which they have done.

Based on results they have to be considered the most successful team behind Chelsea, I think. Not the best but after Chelsea they have won the most and have achieved (strangely) the same result as Tottenham in terms of CL (arguably better being in Pot 2).

          Can he complete the circle?

Well done to Man Utd and Mourinho.

I don't get all the negativity over the style of play, he's barely had one or two transfer windows to get in what he wants and you can't overhaul a squad that quickly.

2 trophies in the bag, CL qualification, bottomless transfer kitty, what's not to like as a Utd fan.

Pep must be looking on enviously, and Klopp too. I don't particularly like Mourinho and probably deep down some United fans don't either but if he gets the right players in he will have them humming and purring in an attacking sense, he's done it before at previous clubs. People write him off as negative but he's far from it, he just played the hand dealt to him and came up trumps.

      Agree completely.

If you're not capable of playing attacking football, either due to injuries, fatigue or under-developed players/chemistry, then you shouldn't. Just look at what happened to Wigan when they dazzled us with attacking football and got relegated. Or look at the success Pulis has had in this league with his defensive style.

Jose's taken a side that has been dismal since Fergie/Scholes left, made it successful, and has given supporters hope. Next season will have better football from United, I'm sure of it.

Blackpool is also a great example of playing attacking football and getting relegated in 2010/11 season. 🙂

It's a shame when that happens. It's a risky style for lower teams, but Bournemouth have shown it's doable this season 🙂

It goes down as a good season. Of course he'd like to have challenged for the league so that was a disappointment, but other than Chelsea, which clubs can say they had a productive season?

You could argue Liverpool getting a CL spot was a successful season for them but they will struggle big time next season trying to balance the PL & CL

        Spurs.

Man U have done well but Spurs have a better, younger squad than United going into next season

I think development should count as productive, and would argue Spurs therefore had a productive season.
Not in terms of hardware, of course, but their assets all grew/matured over the season, and they looked like the best team in the league for the final third or so.

Other than Chelsea, Pool were probably the next best for a productive season.

2 major trophies & Champions League qualification to the group stage is a successful season indeed. Still, it was one game away from being a failure. Liverpool's campaign was a big step in the right direction. Not the top 2 which was wrapped up in November mind.

I don't for 1 minute think United have a better side than Spurs right now, but coming second means very little. Liverpool have improved but they're still quite far behind both Chelsea and Spurs and of course nothing to show for it other than qualification for the early stages of the CL.

I love how man united fans are so content with Mourinho. Even though he spent £150m and took the team backwards from where it was under Van Gaal.

It means 1 or 2 more seasons of 1-1 draws and mediocrity from United, which means one less serious competitor for the mighty LFC.

    2 questions...

    1) Can 2 English teams meet in the group stages because there are 5 this year?

    2) Can AC Milan and Arsenal meet in the group stage of Europa?
