As announced last week, Fantasy Football Scout will be working with Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football throughout the new season.

With a scoring system that awards points for a range of player actions – all powered by the Opta data we know and love – the game looks ideally suited for our community.

To get started, you can sign up and claim a free £50 in credit to your account when you deposit just £5.

Ahead of Friday’s article focusing on player recommendations for Gameweek 1, here are our key strategies and tips for success in the Yahoo game.

Deadlines and Player Selection

As you might expect, we have a budget – this time £200 million – and are tasked with selecting an 11-man line-up.

Notably, you pick a keeper, three defenders, four midfielders and two forwards. You then have a utility slot that can cover a player of any position within your budget restrictions. This effectively allows you to deploy a 4-4-2, 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 formation.

There are no substitutes, which means you will need to ensure that you select certain starters, or use the “late swap” feature to tailor your line-up once teamsheets are announced.

As an example, the deadline for Saturday’s £10k Contest is 3pm. This means that you can view the teamsheets for the six matches included when they are announced at 2pm and tweak your line-up accordingly. So pay close attention to deadlines and try to use the teamsheets to your advantage.

Recruiting a last-minute bargain can free up some valuable funds. It often pays to have a likely target in mind – in case of this scenario developing – so you can act fast to finalise your line-up before deadline.

Scoring Points

Analysis of Yahoo Daily Fantasy’s scoring model is key to success.

One of the first things to note is that goalkeepers earn points for draws and victories. This will clearly influence our decision-making in this position.

While cheap goalkeeping options that play for sides under the cosh will return points for saves, they will need to make seven saves to surpass a rival that keeps a clean sheet and wins the match – and that’s without the latter making a single save in the process.

The holy grail is a keeper that makes a couple of saves, wins the match and keeps a shut-out. The likes of Arsenal’s Petr Cech and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois immediately spring to mind for Gameweek 1. Of course, you’ll pay a premium – relative to other goalkeepers – for these names.

When selecting defenders, you should note that, while they gain points for clean sheets, they are only rewarded with three, compared with a goalkeeper’s six.

Without points for saves, defenders can rely on a series of defensive actions for returns. Clearances are not factored in, but blocks and interceptions are included, as are tackles won. Even so, from our analysis, attacking actions, even for defenders, are vital to their prospects.

If we look at last season’s top Yahoo defenders for minutes per points (above), we see that five of the top six were full-backs.

There are a number of factors at play here, not least their ability to provide crosses and win corners. Full-backs are also more likely to make challenges and therefore win tackles.

Even when we look at the pure centre-backs included in the top ten, both Nathan Ake and Vincent Kompany supplement their defensive actions with some form of attacking points.

With clearances omitted from the scoring, if you’re going to go with a centre-back, you’ll need to find one who is either a monster for interceptions or blocks or, ideally, one that gets forward to provide a threat and shots on goal.

Because shots are absolutely vital in Yahoo.

It stands to reason that attacking players who take shots are more likely to score goals. However, even those who suffer a low conversion rate can prosper.

A shot is awarded with 0.5 points. If it also hits the target it gains another 2 points, with a further 0.5 points if it results in a corner. You can appreciate how this can layer up to reward those who pepper the goal.

If we look at the top ten Yahoo scorers in attacking positions, we can see that the purely creative players – Fabregas aside – are conspicuous by their absence, with shot makers and goal scorers dominant.

As an example, outside of the top ten, Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson outscored Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian’s superior creativity and assist count could not see him better the Swansea playmaker. Sigurdsson scored 158 points for shots and shots on target, compared with De Bruyne’s 85 – and that proved decisive.

In short, then, we must isolate attacking players that shoot as much as possible. If they make a lot of passes, cross the ball and draw fouls then all the better.

While combative midfielders have a place in the Yahoo game, we should not expect to pay a premium for these. Indeed, they should really be seen as “enablers” to free up funds.

If we look at the minutes per points averages, one of the most successful defensive midfielders is Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. But he only achieved a point every 13.4 minutes, despite winning an impressive 50 points from tackles and 40.5 points from interceptions. Elsewhere, Arsenal pair Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka won a point every 12.9 and 13.1 minutes respectively.

That can’t compete with a player providing crosses and, in particular, shooting for goal. Even those outside of the “elite” players for those metrics can prosper over a midfield destroyer.

As an example, Burnley’s Robbie Brady chipped in with a point every 10.2 minutes, while even the Clarets’ new signing Jon Walters fetched a point every 12.3 minutes while at Stoke City. Walters earned a third of his points through shots and shots on targets combined.

Player Prices

Player valuations will fluctuate weekly based on their previous performances.

Pinpointing the cheap, hidden gems with the potential to score big each week is obviously vital.

Each week our dedicated Yahoo article will attempt to unearth these players while giving you a breakdown of our primary XI for big contests in the Gameweek.

Look out for our first article this coming Friday.

Sacrificial Lambs : The case for at least one 6 Mil+ defender

After listening to the Scoutcast yesterday, I believe it's important to get at least 1 defender worth 6M+, purely from a structure PoV. This is because the current template attack seems to be :

    KdB Willian Zaha
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

There are 2 big things that can go wrong with this attack :

Scenario A. A 9/9.5M midfielder explosion : Alli, Eriksen, Salah, Mane could easily have a great GW1. These are popular players playing for attacking teams and their prices could easily go up by 0.3 in no time.

Scenario B. 10/10.5 Mil striker explosion : Someone like Jesus or Lacazette could score a brace, and become high owned captaincy options for GW2 (especially Jesus).

In both scenarios, you'd want to get Jesus OR say Mane in. (difficult to get both) But :
    1. You don't want to lose someone who can punish you : Kane, Lukaku, KdB, (maybe Firmino)
    2. You don't want to spend more than -4 in hits

The best way to prepare for this situation is to have a contingency plan - a way to release 2 Mil without sacrificing an explosive player. The best sacrificial lambs in this case are expensive defenders. For this example, I'll use Valencia.

Valencia isn't really the most explosive defender. He might get an assist every other game, and sometimes bonus, but for now he is a nailed on defender in a Mourinho team, potentially a wingback if 3-5-2 and maybe expected PPG of 5+. You wouldn't mind losing him if you had to squeeze in Jesus into your team.

    Scenario A - Midfield explosion : Zaha/Willian + Valencia -> Mane + 4.0 defender
    Scenario B - Striker explosion : Firmino + Valencia -> Jesus(c) + 4.5 defender

I would advocate getting another 6.0 mil defender or a 5.5 with 0.5 in the bank just to have a backup to this plan as well. Take your pick from : Valencia, Walker, Kolasinac or Bertrand/Danilo/Davies+0.5 itB.

tl;dr : Instead of spreading money on 5th mid, 4th def, goalies - get an expensive defender or two as a way of releasing cash on short notice.

The case for a cheap defense I feel is very simple, if you get a few 5.0s with attacking threat, good fixtures, or both you don't need to ever transfer them out and waste transfers on your defense. There is always more value in defender than attacks but that also means that there is much more value in 5.0/4.5 defenders than than in 5.0/4.5 midfielders. There is a reason Yoshida is an accepted defenseman around here while Mili is an automatic question mark. If you fancy Atsu or Carrol or Fraser or any cheap mid then by all means go ahead with that 4th mid route but that gives you limited flexibility if they don't fire and remember they were priced that low for a reason, it isn't easy to get lucky and pick the right bandwagon.

A cheap defense means far more funds in your attack. Having a balance of two top-tier mids and forwards along with two mid-priced mids and one mid-priced forward gives you ample flexibility, captaincy options, and regular points getters.

Your 6.0 defender may score better in the long haul (that is if you don't transfer him early) but FPL is a game played week to week, make careful, calculated decision for sure but at the end of the day a good attacker with good fixtures is always a good bet.

      1. Enzo the Baker
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

You make good points, I agree that there are a bunch of possibly underpriced 5.0 defs this time in FPL and you can make a strong team with them. Especially early in the season season when the likes of last year's Alonso/Walker haven't emerged and reliable top teams aren't keeping CS, it's risky to go with Valencia and others.

Having said that, I'm personally going for a 4-3-3 for the first few weeks :

        Valencia Danilo Cedric Daniels
        KdB Willian Zaha
        Kane Lukaku Firmino
        + 0.5 itB and 2x4.5 mids

I think in this case, I would advocate going for a heavy defender so you can free up funds for 9+ mids and 3rd expensive striker if needed

          this doesnt make sense
          4.5 / 4.0 (8.5)
          6.5 / 5.5 / 5 / 5/ 4.0 (26)
          10 / 7 / 7 / 4.5 / 4.5 (33)
          12.5 / 11.5 / 8.5 (32.5)
          + 0.5 itb equals 100.5

you going with a starting 4.0 gk ie elliot? very risky as theyre linked with a new keeper

I'd love to save FT going into GW2. This is just a contingency plan if say Jesus scores a brace and takes a significant lead in Community Poll for captain going into GW2. Or say if Willian is taken off on 50 mins because he played like gash, and Mane/Salah score a brace.

Depends on if you think the 6.5 def can out score the 4.5 by at least 4 pts in GWs 1 and 2(maybe). 2.0M might be too much in the bank though

I really dont see why this is required.
I just saw your team, youre going with Kane Firmino and Lukaku upfront. What if all of them score plus Jesus scores. What would you do?
Besides no matter how expensive def you have, # main men upfront(Kane Kaku Jesus) will entirely screw up the remainder of the team.
Im going with a 343 personally with KDB Salah Kane Lukaku as my heavy hitters and Mounie as my 3rd striker, and wouldnt shift any player based on a single gw score.
Yes, 2-3 consecutive games where he scores then yes Ill have to get him in, but defense is the place where you can get excellent value.

      1. Enzo the Baker

If Kane, Lukaku and Firmino score 1 each, but Jesus scores a hattrick in GW1, I'd probably still lose Firmino to captain Jesus in GW2.

All I'm saying is give yourself the option to react to Jesus' emergence, at short notice, with a -4, without losing a heavy hitting attacker.

Whether you act on the option of course is a personal choice

I agree with much of this post. I've already got Jesus and Mane and a 6.0 def mainly to maintain flexibility with transfers. Those hits for enablers really add up over the course of a season and they are mostly avoidable if you just identify the price points at which essential players are most likely to emerge.

Nice post, this was my thinking. I'm going with both Valencia + Walker at the start rather than leaving money itb. Was unsure if this was a good move but reading this gave me more confidence 🙂

If Jesus blows up in GW1 then drop Kane to Jesus for GW2(not the best game for Spurs) and bring Kane back in for GW3 and pocket the small profit you made off the Jesus price rise. For the midfield, the dropping a 6.5 defender to a 4.5 would work to upgrade if you also had 0.5 ITB. I would be less keen to do the midfield change though as the balance of my team would be lost.

Given the choice, I'd rather drop Firmino for Jesus, than drop Kane for Jesus just to bring him back a week later. And I would try to avoid losing a midfielder while getting Jesus

A great post and certainly one option to achieve squad flexibility. I can't help wondering though that the best way to react to GW1 surprises was also provided in the scoutcast: by setting your team up in the first place to deal with 4-6 gameweeks, not just the first one. And also to try and roll a ft to get you to GW3, where a "mini wildcard" can be played and 3 players changed for just a -4 penalty.

        Cheers Rumour Mill.

I think at the outset we all try to set up our squad for the first 4-6 weeks, but like the Scoutcast team said - our solid looking GW1 squad usually looks flat after the GW has concluded.

It would be great to roll a FT and mini-wildcard in GW3, I hope our GW1 teams are good enough for that !

          No worries 🙂

Yeah its possible it will do haha. There might be injuries, suspensions, or surprise rotation etc aswell. I'm certainly planning to get to GW3 though with 2ft, fingers crossed! What would your advice be for those who have elected not to go with Kane? (say they have a front 2 of 10.5, 11.5, or 2x 10.5).

Realistically you're gonna need Alonso to swap to a 4.5/5 def to free up 2-2.5 to upgrade a 7.0 mid to a 9-9.5

        • 12 Years

        Or a 6.5 to an emerging/non-playing 4.0 defender.
Or of course you can also start with 0.5 itB

I'm completely unconvinced. Having a midfielder that you can downgrade to free up funds elsewhere is exactly the same thing.

      I have the following structure:
      4.5 4.0
      5.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.5
      10.0 7.0 7.0 5.0 4.5
      12.5 11.5 10.5

If a high-priced striker (other than one that I have) becomes essential, it is an easy swap.
If a 9.5 midfielder becomes essential, then I have options - downgrade KdB, or downgrade a striker and upgrade a 7.0 mid.
But hey, whatever you need to do to convince yourself that expensive defenders are worthwhile 😉

I think its a little bit more complicated than that, TBH.

The assumption I'm making is this :
The potential downside of getting rid of an attacker as a makeweight (to release funds), is greater than the potential downside of getting rid of a defender. This is because attackers usually can cause more damage in the short term than a defender.

If you agree with this assumption, it might make sense to have Valencia as a makeweight to release funds.

If not, then I totally agree with your PoV. It's just different from mine, and that's fine 🙂

        1. the cromulent one
          • 12 Years

The "potential downside" already exists in your gw1 team if you haven't already maximized the number of high-priced attackers.
What I think you're trying to say is that you might not want to get rid of your high-priced attackers. Well, yes I would, if I think there is a better option out there. Compared to your team, I'd likely have an extra high-priced attacker to choose from as a makeweight.
Also, with more high-priced players, the odds are higher that at least one is misfiring or gets injured - an easy pick to downgrade and free up funds.
We all have to make choices with the budget. Best to allocate it in the way we think will bring the most points, not in the way that may, under certain contrived conditions, make certain transfers easier.

Sorry but this post is nonsense.

If someone like Jesus scores a brace GW1 then you suck it up and move on. If you thought they were a good pick pre season you could start with them.

What if you trade out Firmino for Jesus after GW1 and then in GW2 Firmino scores a hattrick inc a penalty and Jesus blanks? And what if Kolasinac gets two assists this week but you can't get him in because you've now ditched Valencia to a 4.5?

What you're advocating is manic points chasing, nothing more. It's no coincidence that the best FPL players tend to be very patient.

Finally, guys priced at 9m+ don't become essential very easily. It's more the guys like King, Vardy, Mahrez who are underpriced who become must haves.

      1. Enzo the Baker
        • 12 Years

I agree with all of your points, I can see how it looks like I'm advocating manic points chasing. Of course anything could happen in FPL, you could easily miss Jesus and Firmino hauls by swapping one for the other.

At the end of the day, I suppose it depends on how you want to play the game.

If you are risk averse and believe that the downside of not owning Jesus during a heavy captaincy week is greater than the upside of owning Firmino for a potential haul, then you might want to keep a 'sacrificial lamb' at the ready to easily release funds.

On the other hand, if you have full confidence in your picks and want to patiently ride things out, even if it involves going against the grain in the short term - then you can happily save a FT, of course.

      I have 7.0, 6.5, 6.0
My 6.5 is Milner, who, if you calculate his stats from last year reclassified as a defender, would be over 180 points. I also have Firmino. So If Milner takes a penalty, he stays. If Firmino, I downgrade Milner and upgrade elsewhere.
Hopefully there's a penalty in the first fixture!
That being said, how injured and beat up Liverpool gets each and every year, I can't believe that Milner isn't in each and every team. Only defender that will likely contest Alonso this year imo.

There's a lot of overthinking on formation. It can change from week to week with a transfer or even a substitution e.g. I will be rotating a 4.5m mid and a 4.5m def depending on form / fixtures so could be 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 any given week.

Mili seems the most nailed to play, although granted that may be in defence. he does have pens and free kicks though so some potential there.

Iwobi seems the more glamorous pick playing in a higher scoring side, but conscious thats a transfer waiting to happen, probably after two weeks.

Supercomputer predicted the premier league table

      20 Huddersfield Town
      19 Brighton Albion
      18 Burnley
      17 Watford
      16 Stoke
      15 Newcastle
      14 Bournemouth
      13 Swansea
      12 Leicester
      11 West Brom
      10 Crystal Palace
      9 Southampton
      8 West Ham
      7 Everton
      6 Liverpool
      5 Arsenal
      4 Tottenham
      3 Chelsea
      2 Manchester United
      1 Manchester City

Also kinda cool to note the same super computer correctly predicted chelsea winning the title this season.
