Community Round-up: World Cup knockout rounds and FPL launch

The Fantasy Football Scout Community have been busy on two fronts this week, with the World Cup knockout rounds prompting discussion of Fantasy team strategies and the early launch of the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League game catching many by surprise.

A few site updates, including members-only comments and the “undo upvote” function, have also been rolled out over the last seven days.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

Rewind seven days and the World Cup round of 16 was yet to begin. G-Whizz gave us his excellent bookmakers-influenced clean sheet odds after the climax of the group stage before ZoumasBloomers asked Fantasy managers their plans as Argentina, Spain and Portugal fell by the wayside and presented us with a host of selection problems.

Legomane sparked a “stick-or-twist” captaincy strategy debate as the last-16 progressed before Stat gave us a welcome heads-up on the players who were one booking away from suspension as we mulled over our quarter-final teams.

G-Whizz returned with more shut-out probabilities for the quarters, while discussion on taking hits for a stronger bench in the McDonald’s FIFA game divided opinion. 420king‘s price rise/drop predictions helped site users stay ahead of the curve.

Pumpkinhead gave us a straight choice, meanwhile: Romelu Lukaku or Eden Hazard?

Away from the Fantasy side of things, Polka Wakey O’Dot was effusive in his praise for this summer’s tournament: is this the best World Cup ever?

Red Arrows gave us a one-wish dilemma, too: England winning the World Cup or individual Fantasy football success.

The gaping void that was two World Cup rest days were partially filled by the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 on Thursday (thanks Hasselbaink Forever!).

NorthernBoysLoveGravs was straight in there with the quest to find the lowest FPL ID, while RedLightning put an early call out for mini-league details and codes.

The rate-my-team requests were quickly flooding in – panda07 with the first – with this hot topic collecting the subsequent RMTs.

Revival rounded up some bargain buys, while Ludo scrutinised Wilfried Zaha, Marko Arnautovic and the other reclassified FPL assets.

Stat brought welcome news about a change in the rules regarding the weekly prize.

The aforementioned FFS site updates, meanwhile, started with the rolling out of members-only comments and the “undo upvote” function. The first such members-only comment prompted discussion on the set piece and penalty data.

Another tweak fixed the “double sign-in” issue that had plagued the members’ area.

Community Tables

The launch of Fantasy Premier League has prompted two of our number to create some helpful tables to assist our squad selections for the new season.

Mattias has focused on bonus points and in particular which defenders are strong performers on the Bonus Points System.

FPL Virgin, meanwhile, has blessed us with a trilogy of tables looking at the best defenders, midfielders and forwards for the coming season.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the quarter-finals commencing on Friday, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game was hotting up. The top of the league read as follows:

1. Sladuna (289 points)
2. Ludaslol (282 points)
3=. Akihabara (273 points)
3=. Eunuch999 (273 points)
3=. Hurrikanne (273 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (244 points)
2. JohannesN (236 points)
3. GSumner (232 points)
4. Matzi11a (220 points)
5. Geoff (213 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

All the big boys in terms of world cup history are now out but it's been a great tournament. I think the winner of France v Belgium will win it. The other side of the draw is not up to much except possibly for Croatia.

After the first week, with City's run of fixtures, you don't need to captain Salah. You could captain Aguero or someone else and just have Mane and Firmino. If you don't captain Salah, he's not worth it

      1. UshFPL
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

But if he scores a brace in that first week you'll want to tear your team up to get him in

Will have Aguero, Firmino (c) and Mane. Doubt they'll all blank. Those front 3 at Liverpool are almost always involved in each other's goals.

It's just a thought, I may still go with Salah, but leaning more towards going without.

That was Ronaldo. Do you have complete faith that Salah will replicate his output from last season? If he does, then of course it's a no-brainer. 303 points for 13m is a bargain.

Yer. Look how many chances salah missed too. He's consistent and gets chance after chance . I expect Liverpool to give City a challenge this season I really do. I'll be starting with Salah. He is capable of scoring 4 in a game...I wouldn't want to not have him when his captain ownership is through the roof. Too risky

I'm going to try again with better formatting. I hope you don't mind 🙂

I'm toying with the idea of getting *both* TAA and Clyne (5.0 each).
    ________________________________
    Cons:

    (a) Extra Pool slot taken on a non-playing player each week
    (b) 1.0 (above 4.0) spent on the bench each week is not efficient spending
    (c) Similar to (b), there exists good value players for less money
    (d) Unable to rotate based on fixtures
    ________________________________
    Pros:

    (e) Nailed Pool FB in the team each week could be a relatively consistent source of returns at both ends

    (f) No need to rotate because Pool are a 'top team' and FBs can get returns any time

    (g) No need to spend 4.0+ of your budget on a cheap player you don't actually want to ever play except in emergencies (E.g. Bednarek).

    (h) Saves money on pairing Robertson with a backup who is actually any good (i.e. Clyne + TAA = 10.0; Robbo + reasonable player = 10.5-11.0)

    (i) If a player is rested, you automatically get a like-for-like replacement (same fixture + position = no unplanned surprises)

    (j) Similar to (i), if a player is injured for an extended period of time, you then have a nailed (valuable) player in a top team without the need for a transfer, and could benefit automatically from price rises. You can also choose to sell the injured player for the best backup (or downgrade for funds), but there is no rush.

Just getting Robertson is a simpler solution because it's a bit easier to compute, but I would argue that Robertson is less nailed than 2 RBs who play in the same position 🙂 I wouldn't expect quite as much in attacking terms as I'd also likely be spending less with the pairing unless I get a 4.0m defender, who is unlikely to be comparable to Robertson in terms of nailedness or any kind of returns (this is okay if the fodder stays on the bench, but what if I need to play him?)

I think defenders are the best value players in the game. They tend to have the highest points per game per million. I think you're using two valuable defender spots for effectively one player.

    3. Skalla
      • 7 Years

Maybe for the start of the season with uncertain line-ups but in the long run surely a nailed 5.5 and 4.5 will be better and give you more options to play the fixtures.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Would you be 'playing the fixtures' with Robertson though? Most would keep him in their XIs week-in , week-out. So why not the RBs? 🙂

    4. Karan14
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

This is a good idea for Draft League when the pool of players is small it gives you an assured starter. But not for FPL imo a lot of other option will emerge at that price who could individually do better than TAA & Clybe and then there’s Gomez as well I’d just pay the extra for Robbo/VVD if you want a Pool def.

You might tire of seeing that £5 mil sat on your bench should another of your outfield players miss a match, instead of your cheap 2-pointer coming on.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

This is a good point. The non-playing player of the pair would be a de-facto third sub. That said, it could save you 0.5+ to spend on another sub, for example, so you get a 5.0 def instead of 4.5 or whatever.

Also, I think this is mosre of a mental block than a rational one, since 5.0 sounds like a lot for a third sub, but if it were Robbo playing, the third sub would be 4.0 if you'repaying the same amount. The only difference is that the 4.0 might be getting some appearance points or something (which you may or may not ever need), plus of course some of the benefits I've listed 🙂

Well since people seem to believe that it will be more obvious than mysterious which one is likely to play, I'd play the one who's likely to play. If they start, then the other player won't be autosubbed in for the playing player.

So I'd have to worry about this outside of the TAA-Clyne tactic. That is, if another of the 10 outfield players gets 0 mins, that's when I'm risking a 1-pointer sub. Honestly, it's a good point, but I don't think it's that likely. I'll have to look into it more, including having a look at Bavies last season 🙂

      Pickford
      Trippier Meunier(1) Hernandez (5)
Tolliso (6) Lingard Modric Coutinho (5)
Griezman (18 captain) lukaku (5) kane

Obviously Meunier. But surely I can’t do anyone else ? Nice problem to have I guess. But could do with the advice.

Yeah Maguire in and leave Granquist on the bench. I subbed in Granquist and left Pickford on my bench, so a 100% chance that Pickford saves a Granny penalty tmrw!

I activated my Maximum Captain chip (having played BB in GW3), but on the live scoring it's showing as 'Bench Boost Active' and allowing me to manually change my captain.

      Thoughts on Deulofeu?

Seems to be quite popular. He's quite cheap and has great ability but has never been consistent. Only played 450 minutes or so last year with 1 goal and 1 assist Do you think he's a good option to start?

I agree with Aguero not being the force be one was but any city striker that is a regular will be a good pick and Jesus genuinely isn’t that special - yet.

I think he's the best striker that has played in the Premier League. I don't think any other striker would have had the nerve to win the league with that goal v QPR, possibly Van Nistleroy, Shearer, Fowler. Kane might get to his goalscoring levels, he has a great temperament. They both hate losing which should be a given but a lot of modern foitballers seem to like the glory and don't want to work hard enough to be consistently very good or great footballers.

                      Conversion rates last season:

                      Aguero: 22.34%
                      Kane: 16.30%

Aguero was much more lethal than Kane last season (whose conversion rate is lower than that of Salah, Firmino, Lukaku, Sterling, etc. as well)

Good point but ''not as lethal as HE used to be'' would mean a comparison between his conversion rates of the previous season with the last one would be more suitable.

Agreed, but just making a point that his conversion rate was actually much better than who many consider the best striker in the league.

Well these are his stats from the last 5 years,

                          13/14 - 19.7%
                          14/15 - 17.5%
                          15/16 - 20.1%
                          16/17 - 14.4%
                          17/18 - 22.3%

Yeah, I definitely thought he had an off season in 16/17 - that was the season where people started thinking he was past it. But I thought he had a fantastic year last season and it shows. If only he didn't get rotated or injured.

I think England should go through tomorrow, but this Swedish team is quite special. They prevented Netherlands from qualifying, then beat Italy in the play-offs, quietly won their group and routinely beat Switzerland, England are in for some trouble.

No surprises really. Salah you almost feel you have to have as everyone else has him and he has the potential to go big, Firmino is a really nice price, Kane is similar to Salah and Zaha always has a purple patch that makes you wonder why you didn’t have him and better fixtures than Arnie, others at that price are greater unknowns.

Could have Neves instead of Spit Boy.
                    Will Aguero not get rotated?
                    Will Holgate play?

Nice relatively well rested midfield though.

It’s better to spread more equally at least for the beginning of the season.

I played my max captain today but it's coming up that I played my bench boost, which is impossible because I already used it weeks ago. Anyone have the same issue?
