We are delighted to announce there is just one week left until the official launch of Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it will be released on Thursday July 26, to plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

And to give you a taste of what you can expect, we’re planning to publish an exclusive extract for newsletter subscribers in the very near future.

I hope Wilshire turns good. You've got Kenedy at Newcastle, Ward at Cardiff, Neves at Wolves (I am aiming for Jota myself), Hughes Watford and even Cairney at Fulham. Plenty of cheap options which is lovely to see.
Personally I'm aiming for Ward, hope he continues run of pre-season form.

Alex-Arnold a good bet for the season or is he just popular because of World Cup? Does he have much competition or is he nailed?

      Very good bet post gw1

Clyne is his competition and will start due to trent missing pre season.

      D) Maddison if he can nail down Mahrez role, he is such an amazing player.

Talk of Demarai Gray, but I don't see him to be physical enough for that area of the pitch, better suited on the wing. Even then, I think he'll lose his place on wing to Musa once he is back from World Cup, which might be sooner rather than later.

Imagine thinking that spending thousands of hours on fpl and getting a top 100k finish means you're not a "casual"

Reality check - Casuals captain bellerin when he scores & gets 2 assists and win the manager of the week prizes on offer

Not even a casual could win manager of the week.
Not with all the Egyptian teams that get created just take those prizes.
      It’s a joke...

They are. You have to be registered to weeks prior to the week that you come top. So in theory you could come 27th for the week, but if those 26 teams above you were created for that week, or the week before (hai wildcard), then you win.

Why do people have Kamara in the teams as their 4.5 striker instead of Quaner? Quaner looks to be somewhat of a starter and Kamara should struggle getting minutes when Mitrovic arrives. I know its bench fodder but every point counts

Because people tried Quaner last year and he was useless.

With bench, it comes down to minutes more so than quality, particularly in the striker position where there really isnt many 4.5 starting strikers

What are people's thoughts on Barry Douglas? Haven't seen him discussed much on here.

5 goals and 14 assists from LWB last season in the championship, plus Wolves look to have a pretty solid backline with the potential for cleansheets. At 5.0 potentially a good pick?

Dilemma in a 10 man draft league....

    1. Take first pick and guarantee getting Salah but by time of 2nd pick, and up with someone like Dilva.

    2. Opt for middle of the draft. Miss out on Salah/Kane but first 2 picks could be Auba and another captain option.

There are no captains in the draft mode (unless they changed the rules from last year). Depends a bit on how many you are, but I would go first unless you are very many (10+)

      1. Lovren an elevator

There are 10. I just meant captain worthy ie an Eriksen/Aguero/Mané.
I'm starting to think Dilva is as good and as nailed ad alot of those guys anyway tho?

        1. AndyCook
            7 years, 4 months ago

The risk of going tenth is that there are no good strikers at that point. Pick good strikers first, there are very few strikers worth having, maybe less than 10 and you have to play at least one. Everyone should get a decent keeper so leave them late

            1. Lovren an elevator
              • 10 Years

Sitting middle somewhere, could end up with Auba and someone like Jesus or Laca. But does that look better than Salah and Dilva. I feel like Salah isn't essential in this situation as I lose out on all good strikers and there a loads of under the radar mids. I could end up picking premium strikers and defenders and surviving with differential mids like Siggy and Jota

          • AndyCook
              7 years, 4 months ago

Salah first pick still thought but then Kane, Auba, Lukaku. If you go in price order can’t go too far wron

Kenedy or Ralls for me. Ralls being on penalties coupled with Newcastle's tough opening schedule probably points to Ralls, but it's close.

I wanna go 4 probably 5 premium defenders.

The problem is there’s also some good value in defence with the 4.0s and 4.5s. The only thing stopping me going balls deep in premium defenders.

        1. Deulofail

Compare the value of your favourite 4.0 and 4.5 defenders to the least favourite premium pick you are planning to have in your XI. If the value is appaximately the same, go for the cheaper one (assuming you want him permanently in the XI - otherwise it gets a bit more complicated than that).

Yeah gonna have to delve into the expected points per million I guess. Plus compare that to the value of budget midfielders.

            I’d happily play 6 or 7 at the back I think !

I’m considing a five back formation also, I feel there is more value in the defenders then midfielders at the moment.

          Cringe.

Just remember many of the 4 and 4.5 options will probably be utter rubbish. Premium brings premium points. More fun.

          Same, I want a back 5.
I'm going 4 and hoping Cedric can be just as strong.

          Looking likely to be:
Robbo, Mendy, United def, Coleman and Cedric/Douglas.

          You?

i'm going 4 premium initially was going to go 5 but i think there will be some decent mid priced milfs this year so a 4-4-2 is more likely

I'm not so sure I see the value in the 4.0 or 4.5 defenders as much as other people. I would much rather spend the extra 1 million or 1.5 million on top 4 defenders (specifically wing backs) who have attacking returns. The likes of Daniels, Cedric (who probabaly wont make GW 1) may all seem like a good idea now, but a couple of GWs in when you realise how diabolically bad their defences are, you will regret not going all out on Premium. The likes of Clyne and Shaw (both 5.0) should start the season as starters, and from there you can always change that to Lovren (once hes back and also 5.0) and/or Bellerin (5.5 - great fixtures). I'm also much more likley to keep faith in my premium defenders rather than these 4.5 or 4.0 defenders who people often regularly change on a biweekly basis once they arent performing.

I don't believe in scores out of 10 so I will just say that you have tried and tested players, which I like.

Have you thought about the world cup effect? For example, I cannot see Lovren starting after a very long season followed by a world cup. I also have my doubts about Eriksen and Firmino.

I like the two cheapish strikers, I might do that too. You rate Arnie and Wood over Zaha then?

Slightly, but probably not enough. I may be able to afford Robertson, which would be good.

Cool 🙂 I haven't really thought about Wood but his goalscoring rate is impressive.

For Liv Robertson and VVD had the summer off, they should be ready for a new season, whereas Lovren and to a lesser extent Trent AA will be more fatigued. My thinking may be influenced by the fact that I have both Robertson and VVD in my draft.

Every year everyone wants to get 5 heavy hitters in defense before GW1. Let's face it, Daniels, Tomkins and Cedric are going to be in 90% of the teams because of the inevitable reshuffling to fit Alexis in.

Already got a heavy defense and Alexis as I think he will start strongly with his first summer rest in 46 years. No Salah though...

There's truth to this. Although I'm going with 3 heavy hitters that have a good chance of cleanies. Doesn't feel so bad when they don't produce attacking returns.

You need patience if you're going with Coleman / PVA. I'd love them in my team but like you said... PVA > Tomkins in GW2 knowing me.
