Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

If I’m planning to use WC in gw8, would it be a good idea to get a 4.5 goalkeeper with decent fixtures to play every week to save money?

every RMT I have seen has been relatively poor. People are forgetting that aside from your captain. no forward can ever score enough points to justify a 11m slot. no matter how well they play. All the value is in def and midfield.

Here is the correct team as of writing:

    DDG
Azpi, Bailly, Mendy, Robertson, Ban Wissaka
    Mahrez, Sane, Salah (C), Martial
    Tosu, Zaha, Kamara,

No one should ever look to have a 11m forward slot . Impossible to get the required points which would be around 240 over the season for that slot without the benefit of captaining them if you also have salah.

This is so obvious I am surprised no one has picked up on it. I wasnt going to say anything. But feel I have to.

As I said before, I agree with your point re value. But you have done what others haven't and gone for Salah(c). If he flops you are screwed.

the point is you can only have one premium slot that will be the captian. So if not salah can be another premium player at 10+. But only one as he is captain

Disagree. Get two premiums so you have a captaincy choice. I am not going Salah as I think he is too expensive. Looking at Aguero as one. Still deciding on the other.

aub or the 11m pound slot needs 240+ points to justify it. Knae at 29 goals over the season only got 220 points. So its impossible unless he is your captain.

I disagree completely with this personally. Won all my mini leagues last season always having at least two premium Strikers. There's nothing worse than a late consolation being scored against your 6 million defender.

you cnat have two premium as the non captianed player loses value as he can never score enough points to justify points.

Its all bout points per 1m pounds per slot.

No one cares about your mini league - we are talking top 1000 pedigree here

calm down dirtypino 😀 I do agree to an extent - but what value finding doesn't do is take into account 'likely returns' - a more expensive player (like Auba) is more likely to score points over a period than Tosun, Tosun may be better 'value' but if you can afford Auba (by maybe having good value elsewhere) then some may opt for the 'likely returns' over the value...not sure if that incoherent shite I just wrote made any sense

      Here's an idea:

Don't pick Salah at 13m and give yourself multiple 10m+ options to captain based on fixtures and form

You are looking at the value thing completely wrong - expecting a defender to outscore the forwards in value is inevitably going to happen, but it’s when the points hit.

By this logic Aguero can’t be worth having because he doesn’t hit the 20 point mark all the time, but Robertson is because he’s guaranteed a clean sheet or an attacking return every game.

In the long term I think your assesment is true, but in the short term I think your'e wrong. This season sees a lot of great players coming back late in the game. With that in mind our selections are a lot different then they would have been. Thats why there's only four "top dawgs" currently in play. Auba, kun, sanchez and Salah. Out of the three, I believe Salah, Kun and Auba could all hit the ground running. Sanchez, im not to sure. Don't think its worse owning all three, than it is punting on several out of: Sane, mahrez, martial, Mkhi, ramsey, tosun, Zaha, Arnie, Lamela, Jota, Sessegnon, Siggy, Keita, and so on.

Salah, Auba and Kun all come with the possibility of getting 50pts in the first 5gwks

Might seem to make sense but it just doesn’t work. My mini league ’rivals’ spread the cash and have a similar structure e.g going for Vardy and Firmino last year instead of Kane. But I just smash them every single year. Easily. Their little teams, with all their little players, chipping in with 5 points here, 6 points there, just can’t compete. Because Kane will just get back to back hatricks, or Aguero will get 8 goals in 3 games, and all the lesser players that I’ve ‘had’ to put in because of the premiums taking up all the money, will be keeping up nicely with the value players they’ve picked.

I can't seem to get away from a forward line of Auba, Firmino and Aguero, as wrong as that may be to you, it's what I'm gonna gamble with to start for now...

The very clever players rotate their premiums to try to catch their big hauls - Salah to Eriksen for the first doubles when Salah was injured, Kane to Aguero for those great 3 fixtures etc .... if you are lucky you squeeze more out of your 11m premium slots than the average season points - it’s not the number of points that a player gets in a season that is important, it’s the number of points the 11.0 m premium player gets when you actually own him 😉

Valid point there, i love premium defenders but for security reason I think better have two premium players who can be captain.

The forward slot, 11m that you mentioned is wise enough because:

      1. Alternative captain, security.
      2. Different row than Salah, easy to downgrade / change is some players in form.
      3. The most type of player who can explode (Auba, Kun, and maybe Kane but he is 12.5).
      4. Auba have a reasonable value for a great striker, not so far from prwmium defenders.

Your correct team is only correct because you're not considering transfers/wildcards or anything else the game has to offer. If the game was to select 11 players for a season, setting a captain for a whole season and see the maximum points, you win with this finding value thing. Obviously not over a season.

Regarding having just one premium player for captaining.. What if one week salah plays at home against the weakest defence in the league and the next week it's Kane and then the next week is Aguero.. You'll be stuck capping salah for the next 2 gameweeks as well. Or you'll be constantly transferring In the only one premium player you want to captain that week?

Seen a lot of Jota everywhere, but almost no Maddison. Is there a reason he is being overlooked? He played yesterday, so the flag that he might be injured seems redundant.

Huge purchase and likely to be nailed, fantastic set piece taker on a team that will definitely have some big guys in the box (especially when Maguire returns!), and a creative/10 type player with Vardy in front of him?

Not sure he will be nailed early doors, he's a central player and Leicester have quite a few strikers vying for minutes as a pair up top

Probably a fair point. I guess Iheanacho or Musa could be a problem, although the latter might be gone/wide.

They don't have much else by way of creative players in midfield though, it's all anchormen. Iborra, Silva, Amartey or slightly more mobile N'Didi. If they do go for a second striker, Maddison could hypothetically play ten yards further back.

        Perhaps one for the watchlist.

Very positive about Maddison. I watched the Leicester game yesterday and he was the best player on the pitch. Absolutely a no.10 (although defo on the midfielder-side of the spectrum) and will be an England international by March. He reminds me a bit of Marco Reus. It's just that I don't fancy Leicester generally right now and they're off to Old Trafford on GW1.

If salah blanks first gw, it's going to be very interesting.

If this happens I think we are going to see a major conversation here about whether he's worth his value or not.

I see people are picking him out of fear but this can also be a negative. Remember that the majority of FPL players change their mind within a few hours, so Salah with such a huge ownership could see his ownership and price plummet quickly with a blank in the first GW especially if another mid suddenly steps up with a couple of goals.

People speak about how important team value is the first few weeks of the season so it is something I am very interested in seeing play out

    1. ⭐ Bemba_Da ⭐
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

of course it could go the other way, it's 50/50 but for me the more interesting outcome would be a blank

    2. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

Although I agree about the possible conversation about his value, I think that'll be more about whether he's worth 13.0 (with Aubameyang et all ready to start banging them in from GW3) rather than whether he'll drop. It's a shame it's such a faux pas to have these conversations about Salah, but thanks for giving it a bash.

I personally think it's unlikely he'll fall in price rapidly, if at all, though https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/17/the-best-budget-midfielders-to-buy-in-fpl-2018-19/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_18375374

Yup, could be fun when the Salahless teams come out of the woodwork. lol@Salah, lol@13.0, lol@essential
Would like to go Salahless but it doesn't seem worth the risk, he'll be playing in an even better LIV side this season. I commented earlier that there could be a fire sale come GW5 when LIV's fixtures stiffen if he doesn't perform! Interesting times in FPL 😉
