Captains

Captain Sensible – Aguero and Salah in close call for Gameweek 30

Liverpool and Manchester City options look to be the key players in the Gameweek 30 captaincy debate.

Both sides face crucial home fixtures in the Premier League title race and some of their key players have a strong case for the armband.

The Captain Sensible article is here once again to analyse the data of these assets in plenty of detail, as well as the attacking statistics of their teams and defensive capabilities of their opponents.

Captain Poll

In one of the closest calls of the season, it’s been neck-and-neck between Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) all week in the captain poll. The Egyptian took the lead on Monday but by late Tuesday, the Manchester City man had overtaken him.

At the time of writing, Salah is back on top but not by much. Ahead of Burnley’s trip to Anfield, he has the backing of 28.7% while Aguero has 28.67%.

The secondary options from both clubs are also in the top five with Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) garnering 10% support and Sadio Mané (£9.8m) on 4%.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) is the only member of the top five not to play for Liverpool or Manchester City. With Leicester hosting Fulham on Saturday afternoon, the forward has the backing of 4.5% in the vote.

The differential options for Gameweek 30 include some important candidates from previous rounds of fixtures. Paul Pogba (£9.0m) is the best of the rest with 2.3% while Harry Kane (£12.4m) has 1.87% support.

Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m), Eden Hazard (£10.8m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) and Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) are the only other options with more than 1% backing.

    For those interested in the VAR penalty United got on Wednesday;

UEFA has issued an explanation for the late penalty award for handball which helped seal Manchester United's passage to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Referee Damir Skomina was alerted by the video assistant referee under the 'serious missed incident' VAR protocol, and after viewing replays he awarded the spot-kick against Paris St Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe because "his arm was not close to his body" when Diogo Dalot's shot struck it.

"Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected," guidance issued by UEFA reads.

"The defender's arm was not close to the body, which made the defender's body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick."

So contentious. I’m a firm believer in a ‘deliberate’ hand-ball, ball to hand v hand to ball and/or if the arm is away from the body.. I believe with the PSG defender having his back turned it is neither deliberate or hand-to-ball. No penalty imo.

So defenders should turn round and stick an arm out and hope for the best

I actually think it was a penalty.
I don't believe the defender intended to block the ball with his arm, but he's turned his back on the ball which doesn't help his case.
When defenders are facing the ball, in anticipation of a ball being struck on goal, they always put their hands behind their backs now.
You saw Smalling, and Lindelof do this when Mbappe went through, and Bernat I think, hit the post.

The player made himself big with his arm while turning his back. He knew what he was doing and had enough time not to make that poor decision.

I agree with you but that's if the laws were clear on handball , and they just aren't. What is happening now I feel is refs are being told to apply a soon to be revised law that hasn't come into play yet( which will be the removal of the word deliberate in june). But to say he deliberately handled that ball based on the rules as they are now is pure conjecture and was a very harsh call.

He had enough time to be kinaesthetically aware of his limbs whilst pirouetting in the box with his back to the incoming ball? Yeah right..

Although not deliberate, it was done in a professional manner to make himself bigger in order to illegally stop the shot from reaching it's target.

Great that they're clamping down on such tactics.

Yep , it's great but would have been nice of then to enforce this when the laws were changed, not give it a test run first, which is what I think they are doing

The ball was top corner bound before it hit him. Clear change of direction involved. Whether the keeper would have got there or not is another matter. Terry, Vidic etc would have faced up and blocked it. Pathetic defending. Got his just deserts.

      1. boc610
        • 12 Years

Ok , put that logic to the test, Terry faces the ball but jumps in the same manner and it pings off his elbow? Is that a pen considering it would look completely natural jumping like that?

I don't see why they're releasing statements like this as it's just making a rod for their own backs in situations like these, some penalties you'll get and some you won't, it's all really down to the referee's discretion.

I think it's just because of the VAR issue, being new this year, they wanted to clarify it's use.

      ..and Warnock just now on VAR, in PL next season;

“Next season is going to be very interesting, because they’re talking about removing the word deliberate. I don’t know whether it’s going to be a minefield.

"But I’m really glad about VAR, it will get at least 90 per cent right. I was delighted when he gave it [at PSG] because I’m English and I wanted them to win.”

    (1) Arnie

    Would you get:

    A) Jota > Maddison (FUL) this week and Jimi > King/ Wilson next week
    B) Jota > Brooks (hud) this week and Jimi > Vardy next week
    C) Play Jota and Jimi this week (che) and get Vardy and Brooks next week

I would do B. Personally I'm going for Jiminez to Vardy and Jota to Brooks this week I think.

The reason I was leaning away from B is that then I don’t have a LEI attack/ mid for FUL match

I’m 0.1 short of Jimi, Jota > Vardy, Brooks this week

Looking forward at GW 31 - I currently have the below

    Boruc
    Luiz / Robbo / Pereira
    Salah / Anderson / Fraser
    Vardy / Barnes

With Etheridge / Kola / Doherty / Son / Pogba / Jiminez sitting out.

    I'm intending to do Son + Pogba > Mane + A.N.Other

My issue is with the AN Other. I don't know who to bring in - I can't afford Haz and the other Chelsea options (Willian / Pedro / Barkley) are all a bit uninspiring. Any other options in there worth considering? Will be for GW31/33 as 32 likely to be FH...
