Should I play my Free Hit chip in FPL Blank Gameweek 31?

The second and biggest Blank Gameweek of the season takes place this weekend.

Ten teams are without a Premier League fixture due to the clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals, meaning we have just five top-flight matches to choose from as we assemble our Fantasy teams ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The five fixtures still going ahead are:

While there will be plenty of Fantasy managers who decided on their strategy for Gameweek 31 and beyond some time ago, there are still those amongst us who will be pondering whether to activate our Free Hit chip this weekend.

There may even be a percentage of FPL bosses who a while back decided to use their Free Hit chip in Gameweek 31 (or left themselves open to the possibility) who are now having second thoughts – perhaps if they have, say, five or more active players already or if they are questioning the appeal of the unaffected fixtures.

Certainly, the volume of requests for help in our Comments section and on Google suggests there is still a degree of uncertainty among some members of the Fantasy community.

How Fantasy Football Scout users are approaching Gameweek 31

Last week we ran two specific polls on Gameweek 31, asking Fantasy Football Scout users first for how many players they plan to field this weekend and secondly for how many points they’d be willing to sacrifice in FPL hits if they are instead planning to Free Hit in Gameweek 32.

The results as of March 11 are as follows:

Almost one-third (32.05%) of Fantasy managers polled planned to field nine or fewer active players in Blank Gameweek 31.

Over one-third (37.97%) aim to have a full starting XI with a league fixture (possibly with the use of the Free Hit chip), while just under 30% hope to have ten players in action.

Among those managers who still have the Free Hit chip and who are planning on instead using it in the as-yet-to-be-fully-announced Double Gameweek 32, over 70% will be taking at least a -4 hit.

A not insignificant 28.72% plan to take a hit of -8 or worse, meanwhile.

How the top 10,000 FPL managers currently shape up ahead of Gameweek 31

On Saturday we ran our regular top 10k metrics article, which uses data mined from Ragabolly’s site.

After a bit of number crunching, we now know that, as of the Gameweek 30 deadline, the top 10,000 Fantasy managers in the world had an average of 7.77 “active” players in their squads for Blank Gameweek 31.

By active, we mean Fantasy assets whose clubs have a fixture in Gameweek 31 – what that figure doesn’t show is any flagged FPL players (be it through injury, suspension or Aboubakar Kamara-type unavailability), non-playing bench fodder or incidences of two goalkeepers being selected from the same club.

Those variables will likely lower the current average to nearer the 7.00 mark, pre-Gameweek 31 transfers.

A team-by-team breakdown of the ten clubs in action this weekend reads as follows:

TeamAvg no. of players in top 10k squads
Bournemouth0.68
Burnley0.23
Chelsea0.79
Everton0.37
Fulham0.07
Huddersfield Town0.30
Leicester City0.87
Liverpool2.71
Newcastle United0.58
West Ham United1.17

Many Fantasy managers in this sample of the world’s leading 10,000 managers already have a triple-up on Liverpool, with West Ham, Leicester, Chelsea and Bournemouth some distance behind as the next-most-popular clubs who have a fixture in Gameweek 31.

Free Hit in Gameweek 31 as part of a wider strategy

Three weeks ago we outlined the pros and cons of three different chip strategies that Fantasy managers may decide to use going into the blanks and doubles ahead.

Strategy 3 in the linked article incorporated using the Free Hit chip in Blank Gameweek 31 as part of a wider approach.

We’d certainly urge anyone thinking of that strategy (or something similar) to look at the advantages and disadvantages of the different scenarios – not that those approaches are the only ones.

Many of the pros and cons in that piece are still valid but an additional downside to the “building for Double Gameweek 32” strategy is that we won’t know the exact details of that Gameweek until the rearranged fixtures are announced some time after the FA Cup semi-final draw has been made (next Monday at the earliest).

Final Thoughts

As ever, there isn’t a definitive answer to a question such as this.

Opinions on strategies are subjective and completely dependent on an individual’s Fantasy squad.

FPL bosses probably need to ask themselves a number of initial questions going into this weekend:

  • How many players could I get out using free transfers or perhaps by taking a points hit?
  • Do I still have my other chips available?
  • What is my wider approach to the season run-in beyond Gameweek 31, including how do I tackle Gameweek 33 when many of the same clubs will blank again?
  • Do I think the players I can draft in on a Free Hit in Gameweek 31 are worth building a team around and sacrificing a chip for?

Fantasy managers perhaps needn’t think that a full starting XI is a necessity this weekend: the results of our FFS poll and analysis of the top 10k shows that there are plenty of managers, even the high-flying ones, who won’t be able – or are choosing not – to do so.

Of course, should an FPL boss be in a position where they may only currently have two or three assets in action, then the Free Hit chip looks all-the-more enticing.

While there is plenty to be gained by being able to cherry-pick 11 players this weekend, it could be argued that a higher points ceiling exists by deploying the Free Hit chip in a Double Gameweek (likely to be Gameweeks 32 and 35). The counterpoint to that argument, of course, is that Bench Boost or Triple Captain couldn’t be used in the same Gameweek.

An example of a Free Hit starting XI this weekend might be something like:

Fabianski; Robertson, Luiz, Rice; Salah, Mane, Hazard, Brooks; Wilson, Higuain, Vardy.

Fantasy managers perhaps need to also ask themselves:

  • How many players from a Free Hit team such as this do they already have
  • How many would they realistically want (e.g. are Leicester defenders/West Ham midfielders worth it given their current form?)
  • How many points they could see this sort of team scoring versus how many they predict their own current team will rack up
  • Whether any potential drop in overall rank this week could be more than compensated by using a Free Hit chip further down the line

As ever, the “right” approach regarding the Free Hit chip will differ from manager to manager. Hopefully, some of the pointers listed above can help those FPL bosses who are still wavering come to a final decision.

You can still vote in (and see the shifting results of) our two polls below:

Pogba owners. What's your plans to hold or sell? Got him at £7.9m and SV is £8.4m. He looks likely to drop in the next couple of days. Worth selling for a blank gw player.

Dont plan to have Salah on FH32 team so that frees up a lot of funds but how much could Pogba fall by 34 when WC?

Bought at 8.6 here - so its much easier and I will. But at least you got all the points! I'd be tempted to hold if you can buy up cheaper options (Bournemouth etc.).

What is the benefit in playing FH32 & WC34 over WC32 & FH33 ? Except that the WC is closer to GW35?

    Down side maybe ... ?
    - FH team in 32 is price locked as 32 doublers rise in price ?
GW33 team, even with planning, will be much weaker than FH33?
WC32 and WC34 will basically be the same team ?

Obviously all the above will be subject to waiting for FA Cup results etc

Suspect you will want your Gw35 team quite different to your GW32 team.

Btw a better variant (if you are concerned about GW33) is FH32 and WC33 (as opposed to WC34). You will see, looking at DGW35 fixtures, that you will have 8-9 common players and 2FTs.

I think we seem to drifting blindly in to FH32 WC34.

I will look into that when we know the fixtures, but I am not too sure really. Two free transfers and a -4 gives a mini wild card anyway in GW35 to tweak things ?

      Not overthinking yet

based on Jarvish's DGW prediction, I'll go for FH32 due to fixtures difference in DGW32 and DGW35

If something else happens, then WC32 and FH33 is my preferred strategy

A bit of a niche one this, I know, but who is planning to play Allsvenskan Fantasy this season?

After playing Eliteserien last year I'll take a crack on Allsvenskan this year. I'm wondering if there's anyone who speaks Swedish who I could chat with about it, or how many people are playing.

If you intend to play, leave a comment here and I can think about how to provide content this season 🙂

I think I'm going to play it for the first time.
I'm going to use it as a purely stats based exercise, without watching a single game or even knowing who the teams or players are I think i should be able to get a decent rank - but that's to be seen.
I'm currently making a spreadsheet with ratings for home and away fixtures depending on last season's results so that I have a basis for some rotation in my team and I know who has decent early fixtures.
After that it will probably be the tried and tested method of getting in whoever has scored the most points in the last few weeks coupled with decent fixtures coming up.

          Yeah of course I can.
Bear in mind that I have absolutely no knowledge of teams or transfers since last season, it will be be completely based on home and away goals and goals conceded - and I'll assume that anyone promoted is Fulham rather than Wolves standard.

            Hi Geoff

I played it last year (along with Eliteserien, Bundesliga and UCL), I ended up 409th out of 19,002 players. There was a FFS league and I was 5th in that league so there are some FFS folks who were probably inside the top 100. There were no Chips in the game last year or DGWs so it didn't require much time, maybe 20 minutes or so every two weeks to do a couple of transfers.

I enjoyed it and will give it a bit more time this season as there are three Chips. It would be great if there was another FFS league.

Just as an aside, I find playing all these other fantasy football games helps me in FPL to a degree as I don't tinker or do endless calculations as much as I used to as I have some other games to play around with and even take some risks with and I now tend to make a decision in FPL quicker and just go with it.

              Nice score!

I forget who I had start the FFS league.. is it renewed? Can you see it? I'll start a new one if not - it would be good to know who started it.

I find the side games are nice just because I don't care so much 🙂

I can't remember who started it so if you could start a FFS league that would be great, maybe a H2H as well, if I remember correctly last year we only had about 15 players in the Allsvenskan FFS league.

Yep, I agree, you can have a bit of fun with the other games. Given the Chips in the Swedish game I'm seriously considering a GW1 formation of 5-3-2 and play the all defenders get double points Chip. Then I'll have all three of my forwards at home in GW2 (all away in GW1) and play the all 3 attackers get double points Chip and then WC GW3. And with a bit of luck it will be catch-me-if-you-can time! That should take one's mind off the FPL DGWs and Blanks for a bit.

H2H is a good idea, I'll look at it closer to the deadline and see how many people we have interested.

Do you have any idea if there will be DGWs?

                    Great count me in.

I think DGWs, like Eliteserien, only occur if A) matches are postponed by inclement weather or B) if some clubs that are playing in Europe ask their FA for a postponement to help them prepare for a European match. The Norwegian FA seems more inclined to do the latter than the Swedish FA.

Last year I don't remember any games being postponed at all in the Allsvenskan (they were in Eliteserien for both of the reasons above).

The Swedish Cup is currently taking place, it's at the semi-final stage and they haven't had any matches postponed because of the weather.

I had a look at my weekly scores for last season and I had several weekly scores in the 70's and one score of 84 pts. That sounds like just a couple of good weeks rather than DGW scores.

                      Yeah definitely.

The PTB chip in Eliteserien last year was a no-brainer for the double gameweeks, it's so so powerful.

Either way I think I'll wait until I understand the league a bit, go for it mid-season

Some people love having a summer without anything FPL related, but the Scandinavian fantasy games are fun to play and I'm definitely gonna set up a team again, probably somewhere this weekend with only 5 Premier League fixtures.

Hacken's Paulinho's price has risen up to a whopping 12m after 20 goals and 9 assists! He was worth it last season and my captain in many gameweeks.

I see several key players have been reclassified, such as Goteborg's Kharaishvili and Sirius' Haglund.

Just joined the FFS league. 🙂

Geoff, I am Swedish residing in the Philippines hence a bit hard to follow the Allsvenskan in detail (such as watching games etc.).

I intend to play this year as well, last year I started in GW 6 and out of 18,000+ I ended the season around mid 9000 if I recall correctly. I was lucky to climb since my team Hammarby was doing a very good season, except in the last 4 or 5 GWs.

Happy to help out with the little I have to add.

            1. Geoff

          A or B?

          A) Crouch & Son > Wilson & Fraser (-4)
          B) Jimenez > Wilson (free)

Will be using FH32, WC34 and have little value tied up in Son & Jimenez atm.

Currently have this for the blanks...
          Boruc
          TAA Pereira Robbo
          Almiron Anderson Salah
          Vardy Higuaín
Non-playing: Guaita, AWB, Doherty, Pogba, Camarasa, Jimenez

          Which moves to add here?
          1. Pogba (loss 0.2) to Hazard
          2. Camarasa (no loss) to Fraser
          3. Jimenez to Wilson (loss 0.6)
          4. Doherty (0.5) or AWB (0.2) to Azpilcueta

The plan for some time has been 1 and 2 and keep Jim, but I'm all ears. Annoyed at the chaff I have picked up!

No, we struggled against Everton in the reverse fixture and we aren’t exactly scoring for fun, Mane or Salah would be a better shout if you are determined to take a hit

Taking Pogba out for -8 worth it bought him for 7.8, only got 8 playing players ATM.

          Using FH32 and WC 34.

Maxed out on Pool, also have Hazard.. would you lose Sterling for a hit to field 11 players? If yes for whom? Have all the chips and WC intact and will only lose 0.1 on Raz if i get rid

Right now I have 7 players in my team who are not blanking. Pick one:
          A) Murphy, Aguero -> Fraser, Wilson (-4)
          B) Murphy, Aguero -> Fraser, Vardy (-4)
          C) Aguero, Jimenez -> Wilson, Vardy (-4)
C)Murphy, Aguero, Jimenez -> Fraser, Wilson, Vardy (-8)

In gw 32 I will use FH, WC in gw 34.

For free, probably Son to one of these:
            A) Fraser
            B) Tielemans
            C) Maddison

Currently have Vardy and Brooks from each team.

I think Fraser is the safe shout, but Tielemans does look excellent, and a lot of Leicester's attacking play under Rodgers thus far seems to go through him.

          Robertson TAA Digne
          Salah Fraser Brooks Fanderson

          My team for this week:
          Alisson
          Robbo - Yedlin - Chilwell
          FAnderson - Maddison - Salah - Brooks
          Higuain - Wilson(c) - Vardy

          Puncheon on bench if needed

Would have liked Fraser in there but would mean Brooks or FAnderson out so seemed too sideways for a -4
Plan to FH GW32 then probably WC GW 34

Got ten ready to go without taking a hit thus far.

Debating getting Jimenez or Pogba out for -4, but unsure who on earth to get in with all of 0.1 to play with.

Planning a FH 32 and WC33 to also, ideally, accrue 2FTs for DGW35.

Actually thinking that frankly, having ten outfield players is probably good for OR (and certainly in a number of leagues) this week vs. taking -4, I'm sure there'll be a fair few people completely unaware all of two weeks ago that there are only five games this week.

Planning FH 32 at the mo.

          Fab
          Luiz-Taa- Rice
          Brooks-Haz-Salah -Mane
          Vardy

          is it worth a -8.

          a) Wilson (-4)
          b) Wilson + Lanzini (-8)
          c) Wilson + Higuian (-8)
          d) Wilson + Arnie (-8)

Don’t fancy Higuaín as I have Hazard, most people own Vardy in my ML so don’t want him either. So it’s down to these two, thoughts?

I have 11 players for this upcoming gw and 1 ft to play with. I’m going to freehit next week so might as well use the ft now/before weekend. 5 options. What do you think is best?
          1) Drop rondon for Wilson (Bou/palace v newc/Burnley)
          2) Drop yedlin for clyne/mepham/Daniels (who has better fixtures but worse defence)
          3) Bennett for clyne (but then who do I not play?) which means I’m covered if someone is rested/injured
          4) Take a -4 and get bennet/yedlin and Barnes out for clyne/rice and Wilson
          5) plan for bgw33 and get kola back in for bennet and just bench him

I enjoy Who Got The Assist podcast but last one was funny, mostly FPL Stag

First don't worry about value now. Earlier in the season was time to build value...
Twenty minutes later... people are going to sell players like Pogba and Jimenez and lose a lot of value and realise too late they can't afford back

Also Stag rubbishing Wilson and Fraser options all podcast then revealing his FH31 team has both and he has Higuain on bench?!? 😆

Help with FH - I've used my two free transfers this week already tp get in Sterling and TAA - if i now use the free hit will those two transfers be lost and i will revert to the the team had starting the game week?

Yes. Those transfers will not be saved. Your free hit will replace them and your team will revert to what it was at the beginning of the gameweek.

Also you will only have 1 transfer for the game week after you free hit (even if you had 2 FT going into the gameweek where you free hit

There should be an option for 11 players but not using a free hit chip. I'm in this position and also have a FT so can have a player on my bench or look ahead to GW33. I am free hitting in DGW32 so won't be able to carry 2FTs over.
