Pre-Season

Origi among the budget FPL forwards to monitor

With so many appealing premium options in Fantasy Premier League next season, the emergence of a playable budget forward would be a huge bonus.

Raul Jimenez was the Fantasy manager’s friend last year, returning 13 goals, ten assists and 31 bonus points having started the 2018/19 campaign priced at just £5.5m.

The Mexico international has predictably been handed a significant rise upon FPL’s relaunch for 2019/20 and will now set Fantasy bosses back £7.5m.

A cursory glance through the FPL price list suggests that we will struggle to find a ‘Jimenez’ among the sub-£6.0m forward options this time, although pre-season often throws up a wildcard from this price bracket that we had previously disregarded.

Big Six Back-Ups

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri will be on standby to start in Gameweek 1

Perhaps the most eye-catching name among the 22 strikers currently available in the £4.5m-£5.5m grouping is Divock Origi (£5.5m).

The Belgian striker only played 367 minutes of Premier League football last season but was increasingly involved in Jurgen Klopp’s squads as the year progressed.

We may only be an injury to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) or Sadio Mane (£11.5m) away from seeing Origi string together a succession of starts in the top flight, although Jurgen Klopp could very well bolster his attacking options over the summer following the release of Daniel Sturridge and sale of Danny Ings (£6.0m).

Origi was well down the pecking order at the start of 2018/19, with Sturridge and Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.5m) very much the preferred options when Klopp needed to hand breathers to one of his regular front three.

The Belgian striker featured in just three of Liverpool’s first 24 league matches, failing to make the matchday squad on 13 occasions.

However, Origi was the man Klopp frequently turned to in the season run-in: the former Lille striker deputising for Firmino from the start in Gameweeks 28, 29 and 38, as well as in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

Origi came off the bench in the final of that competition to score Liverpool’s decisive second goal.

Mane and Salah are currently on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that could have a significant say in their availability in Gameweek 1.

The competition final takes place exactly three weeks before the start of the 2019/20 season, leaving little time for the premium midfield duo to recover and return to Liverpool’s pre-season camp should Egypt and/or Senegal make it that far.

Both Salah and Mane started in Gameweek 1 last season but their countries had been eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and the pair had more than six weeks to ready themselves for domestic action.

More pertinently, Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson (both £5.5m), who made it to the final weekend of the World Cup with their respective countries, were handed three weeks off after their exertions in Russia and failed to start on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Origi, then, may be a short-term budget punt for Gameweek 1 should Salah and Mane be handled carefully by Klopp – though that is a decision that will likely have to be made very shortly before the season kicks off in early August.

Beyond that, Origi will be a ‘sleeper’ that could come in handy should any injury befall Salah, Mane or Firmino.

The other three FPL forwards representing a ‘big six’ club in this list are Eddie Nketiah, Mason Greenwood and Vincent Janssen (all £4.5m).

The budget trio managed just one league start between them last season and very much merit their cut-price tags, although Greenwood will be one to monitor given how impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was with the young United striker after his debut in Gameweek 38:

Mason Greenwood was brilliant, he was our best player by a mile and that says a lot about the kid. He came into the team with a lack of confidence and you can see that has take a total. Not surprised by his performance, we know he is capable of that.

Options from the Promoted Clubs

David McGoldrick missed only one league game last season

The arrival of Josip Drmic (£5.5m) could put pressure on Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) at Norwich City but the Finn is still expected to be Daniel Farke’s preferred option in Gameweek 1, with Drmic’s career needing a serious kickstart following an injury-ravaged few years.

You can read more about the Swiss international’s credentials in our Scout Report.

Dennis Srbeny (£5.5m) may not even be at Carrow Road come August but should he still be on the books, he won’t be of much interest to Fantasy managers: the German striker failed to start a single game last season and made only two substitute appearances in Norwich’s final 19 fixtures.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) is expected to be a backup option at Villa, meanwhile, with Wesley Moraes (£6.0m) having been bought from Club Brugge.

Kodjia started only five of Villa’s final 23 league and play-off fixtures and was mostly an impact substitute, featuring on the left flank as much as he did up top last season.

David McGoldrick (£5.5m) is perhaps one of the more likelier starters among the 22 players featured in this article.

McGoldrick played in all but one of Sheffield United’s 46 Championship fixtures (starting 36 of them) and scored more goals (15) than he has ever managed in a single season in the second tier.

Starting all but one match between Gameweeks 9 and 28, McGoldrick was one of the first names on the teamsheet for much of the season although did face bench duty on five occasions after Gary Madine and Scott Hogan’s loan captures in January.

Only four Championship players registered more shots than McGoldrick, with the former Ipswich Town forward also expected to be on penalties for the Blades in 2019/20 after his three successes from the spot last season.

The Rest

Shane Long scored four goals in the final six Gameweeks of 2018/19

There are slim pickings elsewhere.

Xande Silva and Connor Wickham (both £4.5m) failed to make a single start between them in 2018/19 and are some way down the pecking order at West Ham and Palace, although Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) has handed in a transfer request in recent days and looks set for a summer exit.

Matej Vydra (£5.5m) hasn’t made one Premier League start in 2019, meanwhile, as he continues to play second fiddle to Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes (both £6.5m).

Joselu (£5.0m) is reportedly nearing the exit door at Newcastle but the exodus of players and manager, plus the failure to so far snap up Salomon Rondon on a permanent deal, could pave a way for Yoshinori Muto (£5.5m) to feature with more regularity in 2019/20.

Newcastle’s dismal opening run of fixtures and the Japan international’s forgettable debut season (one goal, no assists) will mean Fantasy interest is likely to be very limited, however.

There are several budget strikers whose first-team opportunities may hinge on injuries to their teammates.

Isaac Success (£5.0m) was very much fourth-choice forward by the season’s end at Watford and started just one league match in 2019.

Dominic Solanke (£5.5m), Lys Mousset (£5.0m) and Sam Surridge (£4.5m) are reliant on a loss of form or fitness from Josh King (£6.5m) and Callum Wilson (£8.0m), with even an ‘out of position’ David Brooks (£6.5m) generally preferred to this trio when the first-choice strike pair were sidelined last season.

Solanke, Mousset and Surridge made only three starts between them in 2018/19.

Further along the south coast, Shane Long (£5.0m), Michael Obafemi (£5.0m) and Sam Gallagher (£4.5m) face a fight for first-team minutes following the summer captures of Che Adams and Danny Ings (both £6.0m).

Nathan Redmond (£6.5m), meanwhile, was frequently deployed ‘out of position’ up front after Ralph Hasenhuttl’s arrival midway through last season.

Long saw more minutes and gained more FPL points in 2018/19 than any forward now in the sub-£6.0m bracket.

The Irish forward started 12 league matches last season, including five of Southampton’s last seven, and scored on five occasions.

Hasenhuttl had positive words to say about Long in the season run-in although the arrival of Adams, plus the fact that the Irish striker turns 33 midway through next season, may well see him again become a peripheral figure at St. Mary’s.

It will be interesting to see if Graham Potter can transform Brighton into a more attractive side over the summer, given his reputation for playing attacking football at Swansea and Ostersunds.

Pre-season will certainly be an intriguing watch, given that the Seagulls have one of the best opening runs of fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20.

With Glenn Murray (£6.0m) turning 36 in September, budget forwards Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) – more often used on the flank by Chris Hughton – and Florin Andone (£5.0m) will be hoping for more of a look-in under their new boss.

Potter seems likely to add to his striking options over the summer, though, which could swiftly dash any hopes on that front.

Don’t see Arsenal paying 80 or Palace compromising but you never know. I’d actually prefer now to next season when there’ll be no RH to steady the ship.

I don’t like Zaha at Palace (in fpl) unless we get a Bats equivalent.

Is it not feasible to think Zaha will be played up front if no other striker comes in? With Townsend and Schlupp playing wide?...in which case he becomes an even better option?

I'd expect 10 goals, and a few VAR penalty assists from him this season, for a 7m midfielder I don't see any better value, am I being too optimistic?

Very possible - Palace going into the season with two and half strikers one of whom is Benteke is just par for the course.

It’s just his returns without Bats last season were average - not far off Townsend.

Still a long way to go in the transfer window, could see Bats going back to Palace anyway, Giroud, Abraham, with Mount the back up at Chelsea is probably enough. Bats won't want to go back to Chelsea to play the league cup/reserves every week.

Personally I’d be tempted by Gross and Wilson for Zaha and Jim.

I’d prefer Brighton attack over Palace unless Palace buy big up front (Zaha goes poorly without a central striker) and Wilson has fixtures and no EL.

They'll 100% splash the Zaha cash. Allan Saint-Maximin is one who has been touted. Mourinho is a big fan apparently

The wrinkle is Parish rivals Levy in his ability to take things to the last day. He’ll fight the Zaha transfer all the way. One reason I’m doubting it is Palace would have to strengthen and Zaha our means a biggie in before or simultaneously. If it happens I expect Nelson a right back and a shed load of cash not Maximin

Wickham is my 4.5 makeweight come what may unless it’s 3 up top

He has a new contract!!! Bizarre. Zaha makes no difference I suspect but Ayew gone most certainly does. Ayew got loads of minutes last season.

Kane GW1 could pay off well. Maguire/Trippier may need looking at nearer the deadline but they're not necessarily bad picks.

OldBenKenobi made a good point about Jota above (being better in the second half of the season), which got me thinking...anyone have an idea of his PPM from when they switched to 352 (rather than 343)? assuming it was pretty good, no idea but maybe even better than Jimenez?

Interesting. Still don't like Bilva as an option. Giroud not one to overly rely on, think he's overpriced. AWB being a class player doesnt change the fact that he dons United now.

        ok, thx.

if Bsilva starts,but.. better option there? Zaha, Maddison?

Giroud cost 7,0 and should play this season?

i think united will be better this season and play with attacking backs. Digne looks nice, but then i have to downgrade Bsilva ore giroud.

I agree with you on Giroud, I mean historically Chelsea strikers have been 10m+ in recent seasons (Morata, Costa) and we know either Giroud, or Abraham (not added yet, but surely will also be 7m or so) will be starting every week due to the transfer ban.

Think Madders is potentially a better option fantasy wise. Zaha too. I've owned Bilva nefore, and believe ne the frsutration is terrible.

Giroud is okay,I can underrstand the top-six striker appeal. But still think he'll score less than ten goals this season, but thats just me.

If AwB gets to show more attacking intent, then sure, 5.5 could be a steal. Feel like he was underused attacking wise at Palace, great technical ability that was never used to the fullest.

TAA Walker(or whichever 6.0/5.5 City defender nails a spot) Digne Holebas

I'm torn over Jota or having Perez in midfield. Admittedly the 4.5 back up midfielder is much stronger than the forward option

Thats what I thought! The 4.5 mid can at least guarantee 2 pts off thw bench, the 4'5 fwd can only pray for a point.

Think Ayoze will get similar returns to Jota, but yeah, it's an option worth considering.

Chelsea under Lampard (Potential tactics and team selection)

It has been one of the worst kept secrets in football this summer, but finally it's been announced. Frank Lampard has returned to Chelsea as the Head Coach/Manager of the club after a successful stint at Derby in the Championship last season.

Without wasting much time, as I did last season when Maurizio Sarri arrived, I'll write my thoughts down on how Lampard liked his team to play at Derby and his potential team selection at Chelsea in the coming season.

At Derby, Lampard liked his team to press from the front in a 4-3-3. He played his wingers closer to the striker, so the wingers were much more narrow than the usual wingers, playing in the half spaces. Like Sarri, he likes to play out from the back, forming triangles with a Deep Lying Playmaker midfielder on the top of the triangle and 2 CBs who played narrow and close to each other (maybe because of the quality or lack of it, to play out from the back). He likes his team to overload the box with 4 and sometimes even 5 players while the full back/winger is on the wings, looking for a cross. Derby played through the middle and on the counter.

One of his best traits is, he is very flexible and adapts according to the opposition. Against stronger opposition, he set up his side in a conservative manner (vs Leeds playoff semis), while against weaker opponents, he likes to put pressure on their defenders by pressing, forcing them to give away the ball or make mistakes.

At Chelsea, I'd assume his team seelction to be something like this.

    -------Kepa------

    Azpilicueta - Luiz - Rudiger - Emerson
    -----Kante---Jorginho/Kovacic--- Barkley/Kovacic
    Pulisic - Tammy/Giroud - Hudson-Odoi/Willian

This is the team I think he will start off with. It is unfortunate Loftus Cheek is injured cause he would have been perfect for Advanced CM role.

The good thing about Lampard is, he used lots of youth players at Derby and it's felt that he is really looking deep into the Academy this season to incorporate into the first team, especially with the transfer ban.

    Pros:

-Attacking manager that likes to use pacey players upfront.
    - Is expected to use youth players, so for FPL, we may have a couple of bargains. Maybe more.
    - Similar playing style than what Chelsea are used to, but a lot more flexibility.

    Cons

    - Defence may be exposed on the counter.
    - Lack of a player who you'd put your finger on to score at least 15 goals in the league.
    - Loftus Cheek and Hudson-Odoi injuries at the start, they'd no doubt be starters when fully fit.
    - Lack of coaching experience, learning curve may be a bit longer.

Conclusion : I think this is a very interesting, and even more exciting appointment. This could go either way, but no doubt there will be a buzz amongst the fans and Chelsea youngsters.

Inputs from Derby fans are welcome and appreciated, please correct me if my observations are off the mark.

      Thank you for this.
I am very interested to see how the team takes shape in pre-season, with the transfer ban in force, we know pretty much what we're going to get early on.
If Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, RLC nail down starting roles, they could be absolute bargains.

Potentially yes, as I said in another post, historically Chelsea strikers have been £10m+, and this season we are getting one for £7m, got to be value in that.

nice post, could it be that Hazard was actually somewhat detrimental to the striker playing with him (in terms of scoring)? seems like ages since they had a proper goalscorer upfront - personally think Giroud and Batshuayi are being underrated by most but we'll see

I think it was the lack of quality striker instead. Costa managed to get 20 goals twice in three seasons.

Although, I do believe that the players just looked for Hazard as soon as they got the ball so there was a dependency. They'll have to take the responsibility now.

Good questions raised. I haven't included Pedro cause personally, I think he'll be more of a backup to Pulisic. May start off the season but you'd expect Pulisic to nail down the RW role soon enough.

The feeling that I have of Mount is, he'd be moslty used in Cup games and maybe sub ins in dead games. Think he's way too young to nail down the starting spot at Chelsea, unless he bursts on to the scene like Odoi, which is difficult.

From my limited knowledge, he did rotate, but mostly when things weren't working on the pitch I think. This is something I'll have to look into though.

Anyone else thinking pricing of forwards this season is way off? Given there are ppractically no viable forwards £6.0m or beow (DCL possible exception), while there actually are playing 4.5 mids and defenders, everyone is forced to play 2 - or even 1 - striker, and filling up 3rd striker spot with non-playing 4.5 option.

    1. OldBenKenobi

I'm also happy to go 4-4-2, having preferred 3-4-3 in previous seasons (without much success last two though..).

If you look at the strikers in that price bracket, there is very little chance they will be under 6.5m I would say.

      Murray and Benteke are 6m!

I have Arsenal 7th and United 8th at this moment.

Leicester and West ham look big improvers to sneak into top 6.

      City
      Liverpool
      Spurs
      Arsenal
      Everton
      Wolves
      Leicester

Then I'm really scraping the barrell.

I think City, Liverpool, Spurs nailed for top three.
Arsenal in as much danger as Chelsea & United for bombing down the league.
Leicester & Everton dark horses for 4th spot, But Arsenal Chelsea & Utd won't fall below 8th at all.

      1. HamezMace

        Exactly my point.
Arsenal are in the same boat as Chelsea and United for me.

I don't think Wolves will do as well this season as everyone expects, playing EL will have an impact on their currently thin squad.
I guess there is an argument that Leicester could finish above one of Che/Utd but I don't see it myself.

I would say no chance Everton do...then you're looking at the likes of West Ham, Bournemouth, Southampton to finish above them too...

...as I write this I wonder if I've been the victim of the fishing emoji

Haha no I’m not fishing as such 🙂 (although RDR2 has me hooked on it recently lol)

But I’m more expressing my negative sentiment on both clubs prospects - I could see all those clubs listed above finishing ahead of them, and also could see West Ham & even Watford possibly doing similar - for me all 9 of those clubs have better managers than Chelsea or Utd do, and they all crucially have teams who are greater than the sum of their parts - the total opposite to Utd and a how you’d imagine a Hazard-less Chelsea might fare...

If/when those two find themselves in that quagmire below 7th, it’s very easy to get sucked further down... to me they both look like 38-car trains setting out from the station ready to crash section by section over an 8-9 month period, leaving two almighty wrecks by May next year...

But they may still offer FPL options, Chelsea in particular... and it should be compelling viewing, just for all the wrong reasons!! 🙂

              Tis thus:

              Henderson(hopefully)
              TAA, Robbo, Laporte, Digne, Coleman
              Salah, Sterling
              Vardy, King, *Adams*
              (Bench:4x lolz)

It’s really Adams vs. (Ings, JWP, CHO, Townsend, DCL, Yarmolenkers) for that *Slot* at 6.0... plus honourable mentions to Lamela, Grealish, Harvey Barnes & Dwight McNeil

However the Rodri signing might tip me over the edge to going Ederson/4.5 starting attacker/2 point merchant over the current 4.5GK/6.0 attacker

Same here really. Ive gone for

                    Ederson.
                    VVD. Robo. Laporte. Azpi. Digne.
                    Salah(pC). Siggy.
                    Vardy. Jimenez. King.

Low risk team. Aiming for a top 10k finish.

Fair points, personally I'd be amazed, especially if they both did.
United looks like, from the signing they are making, that they are actually preparing a rebuild, and won't be expecting top 4, or even top 6, but finishing outside the top 10, I doubt it.
Chelsea, the team is good enough for top 10, defensively they are pretty solid, especially compared to Watford, West Ham, Bournemouth etc, and they should have enough going forward too.

As a Utd fan I really hope I'm wrong - but it's the management that swings it for me - this is the first season in history where around two thirds of the teams in the league will have more capable managers in place than both Utd & Chelsea - I can't see it ending well for either 🙁

Villa fan here - Elmo is at least a rotation risk and imo actually not first choice, we have signed Frederic Guilbert at right back. If you want a 4.5 Villa defender Matt Targett is the best choice - and if you want a 6.0 forward and fancy a punt, go for Villa's Wesley, he will be getting on the end of those Targett crosses.

Something is bothering me about Ryan and a 4.0. So have gone for ederson as my city defender.

    Ederson
    TAA VVD Coleman Smith
    Salah KDB Sigurdsson Townsend
    Kane King

    Fodder bench

Leaves me with a team where my only doubts are Smith (nice opening fixtures) and Townsend.

    T'll do for now.

The prices of KDB and Kane seem good value this year so think it would be OK without Sterling and leaving captaincy on Salah - with Kane covering tough fixtures in 6, 9 and 12

Yeah I'm sure I'll have sterling at some point, maybe even before the season starts. Just prefer Kane and kdb (+0.5) over sterling and vardy at the min.

Mates, I am currently on a 451, with Perez as a 5th mid.

Do you think those 6.5 should be invested elsewhere? Azpi and play 541, Deulofeu and play 442, for example.

Or you consider Perez a good 6.5 option?

    Cheers

I'd go for Azpi and put Perez in the wait and see category...have high hopes though, but new team + not great fixtures, rather have a defender who has been great source of points for the last 3 seasons

Liked him as a mid, a bit less now he's a forward.
We all know he's a bit injury prone and usually doesn't play the full 90 mins. Also kinda streaky player...but might get off to a very good start in the first 3-5 matches

Finally cracked it I think (until any further transfers announced) , strong Liverpool defence with Man City guns attack. Remaining players have a good run of games too.

    Alison, Button
    VVD, Coleman, Smith (Diop, Kelly)
Salah, De Bruyne Sterling, Moura (Dedoncker)
    Calvert Lewin, King, Deulofeu

    Have I missed anything?

Alisson seems a waste of a liverpool spot when others are so capable of attacking returns.

        Thanks for the feesback

Ok but he is the cheapest way into the best defense in the league.

I could downgrade him to Ryan and swap Diop for a 4.0 defender and then updrade De Bruyne to Mane?
