Van Aanholt delivers again as Palace record another clean sheet

BRIGHTON 0-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

BHACRY scout notes
Palace players celebrate Jordan Ayew’s second-half goal
  • Goals: None | Jordan Ayew (£5.1m)
  • Assists: None | Christian Benteke (£5.7m)
  • Bonus Points: Vicente Guaita (£5.1m) x3, Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) x2, Ayew x1

Owners of Crystal Palace defenders were the big winners from Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at the Amex Stadium.

Despite home side Brighton racking up 24 attempts on goal, the Eagles held firm to bank a second consecutive clean sheet.

As alluded to before kick off, Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) was one of the players to watch in a clash largely devoid of Fantasy interest.

The Dutch defender followed up his 15-point haul in Gameweek 27 with a very respectable eight-point score.

Van Aanholt trailed only Vicente Guaita (£5.1m) in the Bonus Points System, as the goalkeeper’s eight saves propelled him to an 11-point score.

Jordan Ayew‘s (£5.1m) second-half strike – the forward’s only shot of the match – was only enough for a single bonus point. Despite an excellent reverse pass to set Ayew up, Christian Benteke (£5.7m) is a long way from FPL consideration.

At the other end of the pitch, Palace defenders are back on the radar. Having gone without a clean sheet for 10 Gameweeks, since a 0-0 stalemate away to Watford in Gameweek 16, assets such as van Aanholt and Guaita may pick up owners ahead of a relatively kind four-game run (which could become three if Liverpool advance to the FA Cup sixth round).

The Eagles are also set for key defensive reinforcements, with Roy Hodgson explaining post-match:

“Now, we’re getting players back from injury. James Tomkins (£5.0m) isn’t that far away, Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) is back in training and available and Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.4m) is back in training and available. We knew we’d have to dig in and fight plenty of battles out there. We had to make certain we got our defending right. We won our challenges, the back four was very solid and we knew the chances would come our way.” – Roy Hodgson

Guaita’s eight saves tell the story of Brighton’s problems in attack, with the Palace stopper not overly tested by any of the Seagulls’ efforts on target.

Neal Maupay (£5.8m) was the guiltiest party in this regard, with the Frenchman racking up half of Brighton’s eight shots on target while never really looking like scoring.

The best of Maupay’s chances came early in the second half when a tangle between substitute Jairo Riedewald (£4.5m) and the heavily-involved Aaron Mooy (£4.8m) saw the striker released behind the Palace back-line.

The ball sat up beautifully but Maupay hammered his volley directly at Guaita’s chest, in a moment that summed up the Seagulls’ struggles in front of goal.

Solly March (£4.6m) wasted the home team’s other stand-out opportunity of the tie, firing into the side netting from close range after an excellent crossfield pass from Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) in the 35th minute.

On the defeat, Graham Potter admitted:

“It’s a sore one for us. I thought we, apart from the scorline, did a lot well in the game, had chances, didn’t take them and of course if you don’t… They didn’t do too much to get their goal. We were the better team up to that point. That’s football, you have to put the ball in the net. We created stuff, we tried, had shots, had chances, they didn’t have too much. I feel for the boys. We have to dust oursevles down. There’s enough quality there. We showed enough to say that we can move forward, that’s what we’ve got to do. It’s not a nice feeling when you lose a game. We didnt deserve to lose the game. We just need to focus on the positives, what we’ve done well. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. Sometimes you need a bit of luck – we didn’t get too much of that today. We have to keep working to turn those little margins in our favour. We know every game in this league is tough for us. Today there was a lot of effort and a lot of quality. I liked the performance, how we played. Over the course of the game we were quite good.” – Graham Potter

Owners of Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) endured another blank in Gameweek 28 and may want to avoid the Match of the Day highlights. An injury-time break saw Cenk Tosun (£5.7m) eventually bundle the ball into Zaha’s path.

The winger, who opted to use the outside of his right foot, smashed the post with Mat Ryan (£4.8m) way off his line. The Australian keeper will not have been happy with his attempt to keep out Ayew’s goal, either.

BHACRY scout notes 4
Zaha hits the post with the goal gaping

Hodgson’s assessment of the fiery M23 derby clash was slightly different to Potter’s, with the Palace boss reckoning:

“It was a really good performance from the team, a battling performance. The pitch was heavy but I thought we kept in the game well and got our reward in the end. We should have more than one today and we missed two chances at the end but that is what happens when a team is losing, they send players forward. We had chances at the end, we had consistent moments towards the end of the game.” – Roy Hodgson

The result at the Amex means Brighton are looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone, while Palace could secure safety with several games to spare. On that note, Hodgson added:

“You can never say never, it’s good to get back-to-back wins and we’ve got two important games coming up. If they go well, we can kiss relegation goodbye. We’ve got players coming back from injury so suddenly my squad looks different, whereas earlier in the season we needed all hands in deck.”

Brighton XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Burn, Dunk, Webster, Montoya (Jahanbaksh 77′); Propper, Bissouma (Alzate 81′); March (Murray 65′), Trossard, Mooy; Maupay.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Van Aanholt, Cahill, Dann, Ward; McArthur, Kouyaté, McCarthy (Riedewald HT); Zaha, Benteke (Tosun 86′), Ayew.

Thanks to Atletico and Watford we can expect LiVARpools usually midrange position in the table in the future, right?

So, FH or no FH in GW 31 just comes down to the Pool-Chelsea fa cup fixture right? There's no way people are navigating GW31 without Pool and without a FH, or are they?

People on here seem to be a bit short sighted regarding GW31 imho.

FH in GW31 means not tearing you team apart and leaving it run to GW34, which will have more games, with Free Transfers to put out a decent team in GW34.

It’s not just about whether GW31 will he high scoring, it’s about how many more points you get compared to to us rivals, both in the GW itself and in the build up and aftermath of the game week.

I reckon I can get more points over my rivals in GW31 with a FH than they will get over my team in GW34 with their FH, and during GWs 28 to 30 I don’t have to change my team (will slowly change my bench to get in starters in GW34) and can plan from 32 to 34 to bring in a few decent players when I actually know who they will be.

It’s best not to look at this in isolation 🙂

It’s going to be very difficult for Watford attackers and Burnley defenders to both score well in GW31 which may pour cold water on the Sarr/Deeney transfers in

Pope & Taylor will already be popular

Many may also have double/treble wolves & Rich/DCL already on board - which would be 6-ish starters (if Norwich don’t shock spurs)

If Liverpool play the kids, that jumps to 9-ish straight away for many, many teams - can’t see a FH being worthwhile tbh

FH in a nice DGW looks very tempting from where we’re currently sitting

FA Cupsets could change things - but they just might get people even closer to a full XI for GW31

won’t most have the players that have a double game week anyway? so you would be Free Hitting the same players in that you hold, or at least a similar mixture of players ?

If Liverpool play in 31 I doubt I would consider a Free Hit

We don’t yet know which teams double gameweeks will be when, and how that fits into their fixture commitments etc - although that will hopefully be a bit clearer after midweek

But even then, the DGW’s are still (almost) months away, planning now for which players are going to be fit, in form, and have attractive DGW match-ups in 6-8 weeks time must be close to impossible

FH takes away all that uncertainty and allows you 11x hand picked no strings attached DGW’ers getting you as close as possible to the hallowed 22x players in 1 GW

It’ll all be team dependent though - if you can only get to 2 or 3 starters in GW31 without FT’s, FH becomes attractive, but that’s a tricky situation to say the least

We don’t know much about anything really, except GW31 blanks after the FA Cup -which is my point about not breaking up our team for 31 and using a chip for the known.

If Liverpool/Chelsea, Leicester, Spurs, Man U, Man City, Arsenal all have doubles I think we will pretty much be ‘all cards in’ on their platers well in advance if the double irrespective of form of fixtures, FH or not - heck we have them already

FH in the doubles will be tinkering and fine tuning with what most have already, so not sure there will be a big upside

I don’t think any of Pope, Taylor, Jimmy, Boly, Rich, DCL, Jota etc are really “breaking up” many teams though?

Many are on board already, and if not on board, all are either in form, in good fixture runs before and after GW31, or both...

That gives 6-7 starters for GW31 (again assuming Norwich don’t shock spurs) - and if Liverpool kids win you’re almost at a full XI

Even without Liverpool, I’m not seeing the attraction of a FH in GW31 vs the sheer flexibility in a high upside DGW

But it’s very team dependent, and squad dependent - some may also be forced into FH31, and FA Cupsets may yet change things

I currently have 2 confirmed players in GW31

I just have Pope out of those and not sure I want to start bringing any of those guys in, in fact I have been quite happy to ignore them so getting them because of a blank is counter intuitive

If Liverpool have a game then yes, it’s a bigger decision, but I suspect the CL results means Klopp will stick with the kids and Chelsea will go for the game with a full team.

There really isn’t a ‘single fit’ in FPL, which is why I think Free Hit in gameweek x or WC in gameweek Y is a bit pointless when we don’t know the fixtures.

Taylor is a great bench fodder at 4.2 (I don’t say ‘great’ lightly - Burnley literally have the best home cleansheet record in the league - and he is so benchable at that price into he bargain)

Richarlison I actually think is possibly the verge of great things - I wanted him regardless of GW31

DCL looks a very logical, in form, similar price range replacement for Ings who is now getting injured again & dropping off form wise...

Jimmy - speaks for himself... Boly - I put him in a similar bracket to Taylor - can more than do a job when he plays, great fixtures, nailed, cheap, but also attacking great

                  Jota/Traore - fair enough - won’t be for everyone...

But that’s at least 6-7 players there who aren’t GW31-myopia driven, who aren’t really “breaking up” any teams, and have positives going for them after GW3.... most can also double as FPL squad players rather than XI lynchpins into the bargain

We also have 4 FT’s between now& then - putting that all together - for me - the FH31 makes very little sense

DGW FH immediately appeals much, much more to me though, taking all the above into consideration

But again, it will be very very team dependent, very squad dependent, and very FA-cup result dependent

                    ok let’s dig deeper

3 x Wolves .. mmm ... who play two EL games midweek (4 games in 2 weeks) before GW31, if qualification is looking a bit tight then expect Jimi and others to be rested in the PL before the second leg of the EL and leggy by 34

2 x Everton who play City, Utd, Leic, Chelsea & Spurs in the next 6 - don’t fancy that but will look at Richa in 34

Taylor as a starter who is just one bad game away from Pieters coming back in for him

There is no way that I would consider running ‘all’ those players, or even 3 Wolves and 2 Everton through to 31 and beyond.

Haven’t dug deep enough yet 😉

Wolves are smashing it and have absolutely beautiful fixtures - Jimmy, Jota, Doherty, Boly, even Traore has merits - they had Europa 3 days ago and just scored 3 away to spurs 🙂

Rich & DCL are looking pretty close to fixture proof - plus Ings looks to be both injured and going off the boil - one of Jota/DCL looks very advisable at his price 🙂

Taylor is 4.2 bench fodder who gets you a start in GW31 for the team with literally the best home cleansheet record in the league - he hasn’t missed a minute in 11 GW’s 🙂

We also have 4 FT’s between now& then - putting that all together - for me - the FH31 makes very little sense

DGW FH immediately appeals much, much more to me though, taking all the above into consideration

But again, it will be very very team dependent, very squad dependent, and very FA-cup result dependent

I agree with this, and would go further that I'm not sure about the GW31 will destroy your team narrative.

If you already have 5 you could get 9-10 players even if Pool go through whilst keeping the core of your team (TAA/Salah/KDB + one other) intact and keeping 2.5M ITB so upgrade attack again. Liverpool out makes it easier.
Jimi, DCL, Richarlison, Grealish and Sarr have top10 season stats, comparable to other players in that enabler or 7-8m price point. Plus you need x3 cheaper bench players anyway so why not Taylor, Cathcart, Cantwell etc.

Who are you losing out on?
Lei mids with good fixtures, but who are increasingly looking like they peaked earlier in season and have won 1 in last 7. Man City who are cup hounds this year and could be rotated any week, Man Utd - maybe but they have been flaky all season. Arsenal or Chelsea have some good players but are very inconsistent.

A team like the following is realistic
                Pope
                Boly/Doherty, Taylor, Cathcart/Aurier/Digne (TAA/Pool)
                Alli/Richarlison, x2 of Noble/Grealish/Sarr/Cathcart/Traore (Salah, KDB)
                Jimi, Deeney, Wood/DCL (Auba)
Then only GW30/32 are the problems, but only Arsenal have a decent fixture for both

That's if the FA cup ties get no upsets.

If, and it's a big if (so everything below is conjecture and may be complete rubbish by the end of the week).... the cup games go to plan and top 6 teams get to the semis, GW34 doesn't look as sparking as some may have hoped.
A lot of the "better" teams you want for the run in (Ars/Lei/Pool/Utd/City) have a high chance of only only get a single fixture for GW34 not a DGW.

This is because New/MCity, Ars/Lei who are all still in the FAC actually play each other in the EPL GW34 so only x1 of those need to reach the SF to get a blank. As the GW is split into w/end (FAC-SF + EPL and m/week extra games). Those teams would blank w/end bit and have a single game on m/week (unless skilful rearrangements).
For the SFs if you get City/New or Ars/Lei go through with x2 of MUtd/SUtd/Spurs/Pool/Nor it wipes out 8 teams from GW34 who blanked 31.
This means we may only get 3-4 teams with a DGW34, and most likely Sheff Utd, Villa, Chelsea, West Ham.

I don't fancy BB'ing 15 players from those teams for 34, as will have to get rid of season keepers like TAA/Salah and KDB, and run that team GW33-38. And I like getting x2 fixtures for whole 15 in a DGW if possible

However GW34 looks like a great FH set up for an 11(22) player DGW FH though. 11 players from those 4, and season keepers get stashed in the background rather than sold.

Virg has good points about the negatives of BB'ing in DGW37, but most likely it will still be the big one.

      Pope ?
I'm also thinking about binning McCarthy for him on the road to GW 31.

Feel disgusted after selling Pope & Robbo on WC for McCarthy VVD tbh ....

        Cant get him unfortunately

Will be Dubravka. Wont be surprised if Ryan starts saving penalties from now 😆

Yeah, those who did Pope to Ryan/McCarthy few weeks back have lost too many points.

Sarr has reminded himself as an option at the correct time !
IF Newcastle somehow defeat WBA in fa Cup, i think Grealish sell is on the cards for me.
IF not, he can come IN for Perez in GW 31.

Bdw as I've benched 10 points & Saiss yet to come my GWR atm is 6.5m 😀

I've made poor decisions all season, but managing to leave 16 points on my bench this week is up there with the worst. Pope and Taylor with no real chance of coming on. I had picked the toon game as 0-0 as well then decided they might nick it 1-0 before the deadline so changed the lineup.

Still - plenty of games left to mess it up even more.

GW average is between 16 and 18 points at most levels, so your not massively off the pace. I'm feeling quite optimist with 19 points and the four most owned player in todays matches to come.

Mý 3 worst decisions this season:
            - selling Pope around Xmas time
            - sticking with Vardy
            - TC'ing Mane

What do I learn from them ? There is a thin line between patience and stuborness. Cheap GK's are best left alone if not injured.
Luck plays a huge part in this game.

I did the first two and while it is frustrating, I still feel like they were the right decisions at the time. Burnley were in poor defensive form, there was nothing to suggest the upturn that came and the fixtures were awful. The Vardy one is mainly injury based, can’t predict that on the whole.

The tougher ones to take are where you clearly made a bad call with the available data. They’re the ones that keep me up at night

Most of us are not hurt very much as the majority have A very low score. Only A few points separating red or green arrows, so few that it’ll be easy to catch up again.

Liverpool's result yesterday might give Klopp cause to play several of the lesser lights against Chelsea .... no point burning out the big stars with the league more or less guaranteed. There's hope yet for a FH-free GW31
