Fixtures

What the FA Cup fifth round results will mean for the Blank Gameweek 31 picture

The schedule for Blank Gameweek 31 will be determined by the results of the FA Cup fifth round this week.

The quarter-finals of that competition clash with the Premier League’s final set of fixtures before the March international break, so any top-flight club progressing to the last eight of the FA Cup will blank in FPL.

Ahead of this week’s cup ties, we had only two Premier League fixtures definitely going ahead in Blank Gameweek 31:

Burnley v Watford
Wolverhampton Wanderers
v Bournemouth

One of Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United or Norwich City v Everton will definitely go ahead in Gameweek 31, as Jose Mourinho and Daniel Farke’s sides meet each other in the FA Cup on Wednesday and one of those two clubs will be eliminated.

The ties in the FA Cup fifth round are as follows:

Monday 2nd March

Portsmouth v Arsenal

Tuesday 3rd March

Chelsea v Liverpool
Reading v Sheffield United
West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United

Wednesday 4th March

Leicester City v Birmingham City
Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City

Thursday 5th March

Derby County v Manchester United

Therefore, at the time of writing, we can still have anything between two and seven blanks in Gameweek 31.

If Sheffield United see off Reading, then we will know the full fixture list for Gameweek 31 even before Manchester United face Derby County on Thursday.

Blanks will be confirmed in Gameweek 31 if the following events occur:

GW31 Premier League fixtureA blank will happen if the following happens in the FA Cup fifth round:
Spurs v West HamSpurs beat Norwich
Chelsea v Man CityChelsea beat Liverpool or Man City beat Sheff Wed
Man Utd v Sheff UtdMan Utd beat Derby or Sheff Utd beat Reading
Newcastle v Aston VillaNewcastle beat West Brom
Norwich v EvertonNorwich beat Spurs
Liverpool v Crystal PalaceLiverpool beat Chelsea
Leicester v BrightonLeicester beat Birmingham
Southampton v ArsenalArsenal beat Portsmouth

The maximum of seven blanks will happen in Gameweek 31 if Manchester City, Leicester, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all win their FA Cup fifth-round ties and at least one of Manchester United or Sheffield United also progress.

Looking further ahead to Gameweek 34, which clashes with the FA Cup semi-finals, there are again only two Premier League matches currently confirmed as going ahead:

Everton v Southampton
West Ham United
v Burnley

The results of the FA Cup fifth round and quarter-finals will determine which of the other scheduled Premier League games will survive.

There’ll be fewer blanks in Gameweek 34 (a maximum of four) and, given that there is a free midweek after that set of fixtures, it is widely assumed that 2019/20’s first ‘big’ Double Gameweek will fall then, with outstanding fixtures from Gameweek 28/31/34 needing to be rearranged.

As many as eight scheduled Gameweek 34 fixtures could be confirmed as going ahead this week, although that would require a succession of cup shocks.

More details of the prospective blanks and doubles can be read below:

Here are 3 of my worst transfer decidions. What is yours? Shipping TAA and KDB must get some mentions?

    1. Getting Pulisic on GW14 and keeping him for a 'great' run of fixtures
    2. Pope to McCarthy to miss all of Pope's recent hauls
    3. Picking the wrong Liverpool mid to miss some big hauls (like losing Salah for just two weeks before bgw18 to miss 29 points)

Shipping TAA due to the blank and missing his monster haul is one. But my GK choices this season must be one of the worst in recorded history 😀

Heaton(2 cs) > Roberto (no cs) > Gazza(1 cs)> Guaita (no cs)> Ryan (no cs)

They all got me a grand total of 71 points with 2.54 ppg !

        Probably not.
GW31 will be an issue anyway if Pool go through.
The real impact will be which "shields" to get to offset FH chip many will be using GW31. Therefore Everton, Norwich, Spurs also be important.
I am holding GW31 players atm that have hurt me. Sidibe, Traore as a couple of examples.

I’m in the same position and looking to wildcard. I don’t think I can wait until 32/ 36 to use it, too many points to miss out on. It’s changed my chip strategy slightly too. I’m looking to get in around 8’players for 31 depending who goes through. 3 wolves, 2 Burnley defenders, maybe 2 Everton if they go through and potentially 1 watford. Then free hit in 34 so essentially can ignore the doubles there and spend weeks 32-37 building towards the final double and bench boost

I posted a couple of weeks ago that with all the talk of the Ings, Long double up the real double up people should be looking at is Jimenez and Jota.

I still think Ings is a great pick so whether you double up Wolves all comes down to whether or not you believe in Vardy given the fixtures.

Using free transfer (getting Jota for Nacho) this is my likely team for week 29. If DGW confirmed worth -8 and get Aubameyang Sarr and Robertson for Nacho Mané Stevens? I think probably not but with WHam and Brighton in next 3 for Arsenal.....against that I have no WC so better to plan for 31 when Arsenal blank ( so in fact Arsenal no extra game in 29-31 overall)

Yes or No to getting Aubameyang in thus team?

    Henderson
    TAA Stevens* Boly
    Salah Mané* KDB Barnes
    Jota* Ings Jiménez

I am setting myself up for GW31.

Saving FH and will still have BB.

-12 hit incoming this week whether Liverpool are knocked out by Chelsea or not.

Then 1 FT GW29 and another FT for GW30.

Pool beat Chelsea then GW31 should have 8 starters pending Norwich and Spurs outcome.

Chelsea beat Pool then I should have 11 starters.

    That is my plan 🙂

Thanks Holmes that’s what I was thinking because basically anyone who plays 31 has 3 fixtures from now until then which is the same amount as any arsenal/city play from now until then......

The dilemma for us all now is that the DGWers in 29, won’t play in 31, so if you want to load up on DGWers, you’re really forcing yourself to FH31.

Yes agree alot hinges on tonight, but either way almost everyone has 3 pool so no big difference.

I just think fh on 6 possible teams playing each other are really bad odds for points

If Liverpool don’t play in 31, I’ll only have 2 players (currently). So I’d definitely FH31. I think you can have 11 decent players from the teams available.

Jiminez, Jota, Boly, Doherty, Pope, Deeney, Sarr all popular names aside from FH talk.
Plus we’ll either get Everton or Spurs.

        2. HamezMace
          • 9 Years

          Pretty much this.
Liverpool not playing in 31 makes FH31 also inevitable for me.

IF Liverpool are playing in 31 then I’ll be planning towards that, which means I won’t be bringing in any Arsenal/City players this week.

          I’ve got KdB already

Probably WC before 34, not sure yet. But I don’t want to go into 31 with only 2 players.

You guys talk like there is a big chance of a DGW29.
Do you really think UEFA will allow City - Arsenal to be televised around the same time as Liverpool - Atletico?
Or do you think BT Sports would allow City - Arsenal to play without televising the game (just to help out).
We all know what a Pep comment means - why trust those regarding fixtures? The only reason he is saying it is because that would suit City.

City v WHU was on Sky the same night as Spurs v RB was on BT.
        So it can happen.

First of all, that was due to a damn storm or a typhoon or some unlucky S**T, which is something completely different, than postponed fixtures due to doing well in (inter)national cups.

Also City-Arsenal is somewhat a bigger match a bit more threatening to 'steal' some viewers from the Champion League games. Or the other way around: BT Sports don't want all they potential viewers to watch Liverpool - Atletico instead.

22pt behind leader, is it worth using differentials or capt Mane instead of Salah?

These are the differentials (igniting players we both own):

    Me:
    Mane, DCL, Traore, Barnes, Boly

    Rival:
    Vardy, Doucore, Richarlison, Cantwell, Doherty

There are 10 GWs left which includes doubles and blanks. 22 points is nothing.

Just a few players differential is fine still. Captain whoever you think scores most points.

I’d be looking to nail my DGW/ BGW strategy to get those 22 points back

Alot of love out there for Sarr at the moment understandably but any thoughts on Pepe for the next 4 weeks?

Good option or better to spend money elsewhere?

It's good to hear that the 2020-21 Nations League qualifying draw is going to take place as planned today. I have heard rumours that Euro 2020 would be moved to November/early December due to the Coronavirus, which would bring it into line with the 2022 World Cup. The 2020/21 and 2021/22 Premier League seasons would then run from Christmas to early October, with this season finishing in the autumn if necessary.

It would and the PL season would then need to be brought back to it's normal period after the World Cup. I don't think it will happen but Uefa are going to discuss their worst case options dater today and that's rumoured to be one of the options that they will discuss.

The truth is that we really don;t know how serious this coronavirus thing is going to become ina football context. At one extreme it could just peter out but at the other we could have wholesale bans on "large gatherings" (inc. footie crowds) with matches played behind closed doors or even postponed. Worst case scenario season abandoned - but that must be incredibly unlikely.
