Palace defence out of form ahead of Gameweek 36+ meeting with United

Yet another Fantasy Premier League deadline is only a day away so, with time against us, we will rattle through the main discussion points from two more Gameweek 35+ fixtures in an abridged Scout Notes below.

Watford v Newcastle United and Aston Villa v Crystal Palace are our featured games in this article.

Porous Palace

An away clash at Crystal Palace would ordinarily be a tricky test on paper.

From Gameweeks 1+ to 30+, Palace had the joint-sixth-best defensive record in terms of goals conceded and only three sides had kept more clean sheets.

Since then, however, the Eagles have lost five on the spin and conceded more goals than any other team.

Without arguably their best centre-half in the injured Gary Cahill (£4.4m) and drifting towards a lower-mid-table finish, this seems to be a good time to take on Roy Hodgson’s troops – and it’s Manchester United who face Palace next in Gameweek 36+.

Aston Villa had only scored twice in eight games before Sunday’s clash in the Midlands but they doubled that tally in one fell swoop against the Eagles.

A double for Trezeguet (£5.2m) handed Dean Smith’s side their first victory since January.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) blanked as a result of a fifth successive clean sheet loss but, as is his wont, he so very nearly popped at the other end with a late consolation, registering Palace’s only big chance of the match with a shot that Pepe Reina (£4.2m) saved.

Gayle Force

Among sub-£5.5m forwards, Dwight Gayle (£5.0m) is second only to Mason Greenwood (£4.9m) for FPL ‘form’ over the last month.

Gayle scored the opener in Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat at Watford and has attacking returns in four of his last five starts, with his only blank coming in the 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The budget striker tapped in Federico Fernandez‘s (£4.6m) flick-on to give Newcastle the lead, later being denied by Ben Foster (£4.9m) and setting up Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) for the Magpies’ only other ‘big chance’ of the match.

Steve Bruce’s recent change to a 4-2-3-1 has certainly led to a bit more attacking thrust from the Magpies, although no clean sheets in five matches (their previous two shut-outs were recorded against ten men) does suggest that it has come at the expense of some defensive stability.

Dawson’s Leap

Deeney on the Spot

Troy Deeney (£6.2m) emerged from Watford’s win over Newcastle with a 13-point haul, which is more than he had managed in his previous six appearances combined.

The Hornets’ striker was indebted to two penalties to end his goal drought and in truth, his threat from open play remains limited – his four shots on Saturday (two of which were from the spot) more than doubled his total for the previous five Gameweeks.

His only other clear-cut opportunity was presented to him by an awful Fernandez clearance and the mid-price striker shot straight at Martin Dubravka (£5.1m) with the goal at his mercy.

Deeney limped off towards the end but Nigel Pearson said after full-time:

Troy has what I would call a ‘grumbly knee’ that he has to manage on a daily and weekly basis. This is nothing new, it’s something which he’s come to terms with and has to manage, so you may see him with a bandage today, but it’s nothing new.

Injuries and Bans

Christian Benteke (£5.7m) will miss the remainder of the season after being sent off for violent conduct after the final whistle at Villa Park.

Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) will now presumably revert to being a central striker for the last three Gameweeks, after a spell on the right flank.

Villa lost two of their defence to injuries on Sunday, with Kortney Hause (£4.4m) pulling out in the warm-up and Neil Taylor (£4.2m) being substituted after 36 minutes.

Ahmed Elmohamady (£4.1m) was given the nod at right-back, with Matt Targett (£4.3m) making a timely return from injury to replace Taylor on the opposite flank.

Line-ups

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenia, Kabasele, Dawson, Masina; Capoue, Hughes; Sarr, Doucoure, Welbeck (Gray 90′); Deeney (Cleverley 85′).

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Dubravka; Manquillo, Lascelles (Lazaro 87′), Fernandez, Rose (Krafth 79′); Schar, Shelvey; Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Ritchie (Joelinton 72′); Gayle (Bentaleb 79′).

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; El Mohamady, Konso Ngoyo, Mings, Taylor (Targett 36′); McGinn, Luiz, Hourihane (Nakamba 80′); Trezeguet (El Ghazi 88′), Samatta (Davis 80′) Grealish.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Ward, Dann, Sakho, van Aanholt; Zaha, Kouyate (Riedewald 66′), Milivojevic (Meyer 75′), McArthur (McCarthy 46), Ayew (Townsend 66′); Benteke.

Willian has been average for 6 seasons, what has changed?

    Playstyle? Luck?

Also heard from a friend who is a Chelsea fan that Pulisic has looked pretty poor despite his returns

    B) Martial, TAA, Egan (saving 1 FT)

    Pope Patricio
    Doherty TAA Fernandez Aurier Lascelles
    KDB Fernandes Martial Salah Foden
    Jimenez Kane Greenwood

What is the best way to get Sterling into this team? 1FT 0.9M ITB.

I'm thinking of getting rid of KDB or Salah.

I don't have my FH any more but maybe could help out a few FHers for this week. The way I see it, the big points are in midfield right now and with several teams having kind fixtures, 7 attackers should be a given. That makes 3-5-2 the optimal formation. The general consensus is that triple MU attack is optimal, and triple City attack is also a good choice. Willian, Pulisic and Giroud all stand a good chance of being in the points against Norwich and Salah plays Arsenal with the golden boot on his mind. Ings and Vardy are also in that race and have home fixtures and are in good form. That makes 12 attackers without even considering 4-goal Antonio or Everton players at home to Villa. So, what gives?

    Priority of fixtures -
    1. Chelsea v Norwich
    2. City v Bournemouth
    3. MU v Palace
    4. Southampton v Brighton

IMO Chelsea are the no. 1 team to target as they have motivation (top 4, bounce back from defeat) and players in good individual form, they face the worst team in the league who are already relegated, and early team news means you can get 3x Chelsea players guaranteed to start. It's the perfect storm and should be top priority. Dependant on team news, I would go for 1 each of DEF, MID and FWD with my personal choice being Alonso, Pulisic and Giroud, with Azpilicueta replacing Alonso if he doesn't start. This is because Norwich have the bluntest attack in the league and a CS is quite likely even for Chelsea, and their fullbacks are heavily involved in attacking play and can easily match their attackers for points, which is not the case for the 2 Manchester clubs. Willian v Pulisic has been widely debated and I personally feel that Willian is unlikely to get 90 mins even if he starts, as he is older than Pulisic and played 90 in the previous game whilst Pulisic went off at ~60.

City IMO are the 2nd priority as their home form matched up with leaky Bournemouth points to a mauling, but slight doubts over rotation affecting rhythm and Bournemouth's recent upturn make the Chelsea match more appealing. However those are only slight doubts and I don't see anything other than a convincing City win to nil myself. On a FH, my top pick would be David Silva as he is very likely to start and has had some huge hauls in his few home starts against weaker opposition this season. As a result, I see no reason to keep KDB even if you for some reason think that KDB will start, as Silva has so often stolen his points as KDB plays deeper when they both play. I've seen people say that KDB can haul even if he comes off the bench, but how many times has he actually done that this year? We're playing a probability game and there's no point saying everything's possible. In my mind, KDB is more likely to be rested than not and if he comes off the bench he's more likely to get 1 point than a haul so on a FH that's not a good use of a City spot. The consensus seems to be that Foden will start and after a poor showing against Newcastle I would back him to bounce back with a couple of attacking returns this time round, especially since he usually plays as part of the front 3 rather than behind like Silva. The 3rd spot will go to either Sterling and Jesus and it's 50/50 imo. I think they both start but I'm not certain on either, Sterling is much the better option in a vacuum but Jesus frees up a valuable midfield slot. I'm going to sit on the fence with this one.

United are away from home but Palace have arguably had the worst form in the league in recent matches and are well and truly on the beach, so it's risky to drop any of the United attackers for this one. Bruno, Martial and Greenwood is the optimal combo I think most would agree, but if you're going for triple City mid + Pulisic then Martial would be the one to drop since his form has largely been at home in recent times. Greenwood is full of confidence but there will come a point when he will stop scoring goals at his current ridiculous rate, and it's worth keeping an eye on tonight's match because turnaround time between matches will no longer be United's friend after tonight. If we look at last Monday's game between Spurs and Everton, they were both really lethargic when playing again on Thursday and it will be hard for United to maintain the same intensity on Thursday against Palace. With 2x Chelsea and 3x City attack, it might be worth dropping a United attacker since we only have 7 slots anyway. That would be either Martial or Greenwood imo.

For the rest, Salah has been running himself into the ground recently with Arsenal his 5th start in something like 12-13 days if he starts, which doesn't bode well for a huge haul and I've not been convinced at all with Liverpool's play since they wrapped the title up. The fact that he's the most expensive player in the game shouldn't matter but might be a consideration if you're going for Sterling as well. Further, there's the fact that his away form this season has actually been pretty abysmal with his hauls pretty much exclusively coming when Mane has been out. All things considered I don't think his form or fixture warrant any attention on a FH.

Ings on the other hand has form and fixture and I think he stands a good chance of scoring a goal against Brighton. However, I doubt whether he will be able to get more than that, because Southampton have the worst turnaround period in the upcoming couple of GWs and I think that will catch up to them, with Brighton for example having 2 days extra rest before Thursday's game. Brighton have been demolished in their most recent games against the big boys but Bournemouth and Villa winning this weekend should have them looking over their shoulder again since they're only 5 points clear, and that imo should be enough motivation to see a better Brighton akin to the one that came out of lockdown with 4 points vs Arsenal and Leicester. Add to that Southampton's home form over the season and Ings scoring most of his hauls away, and I think there's enough doubt there to drop him down the priority list.

Finally, West Ham and Everton face Watford and Villa respectively, and it's interesting to see that both teams actually won this weekend to boost their (slim) survival hopes. I passed on Antonio last week because I wasn't sure that West Ham would be able to beat teams fighting for their lives, and that point still stands against Watford this week. Antonio's 4 goal haul was obviously a freak occurrence considering that not too long ago he hadn't even scored in consecutive games for WHU before, I wouldn't expect anything similar this week. As for Everton, they have looked really really bad in recent games and are another team on the beach. I wouldn't even be surprised if Villa took something from this game, so not even Digne strikes me as an appealing option. As for DCL, the less said the better.

Alright so that's my ramblings done for the day. Please bear in mind that these are my thoughts and you may have your own priorities in terms of fixtures/players. At the end of the day there are more than 7 really good choices and you can't have them all so something's got to give, I'm merely providing my opinion. To summarise, my advice would be to consider probabilities, floors and ceilings, but not ownership. Don't worry about dropping a highly owned player because he 'could' hurt your rank, look at what's more likely to happen and try to really attack these juicy fixtures as much as possible. Good luck all.

Everton are normally strong defensively at Goodison but it is do or die for Villa.

I also like West Ham v Watford under the lights in the Olympic stadium playing for survival too.

I expect that Antonio being converted into a box striker can pay dividends again.

On Man City don't be surprised to see Sterling rested and even Jesus benched if Pep has him playing Wembley on Saturday evening.

Sterling rested and Jesus comes off the bench to help the squad out!?

If both play on Saturday I'd be surprised if either start, especially key man Sterling.

Jesus will. He’s come off at 60 a few times and started the following match. He’ll start

I'm not sure about the captain, it takes one howler from Kepa and you'll regret captaining a defender

    Debating between a GW36 FH or a GW38 FH

    GW36 FH:
    Chelsea vs Norwich
Liv vs Arsenal (with less resting time)
    MCI vs Bournemouth (without ake)

    GW38 FH:
More teams have had rest, perhaps less Pep Fraudulence
    MCI vs Norwich
    Liv vs newcastle
    Spurs vs CRY
Everton vs Bou: probably not worth bothering

Seems like GW38 is the better idea

36 has the better fixtures but 38 is typically very high scoring and we should have more team news certainty.

If I could 100% know the city starting 11 I’d be tempted to play it this week but I don’t so it’s 38 for me

Plus Man City could beat Norwich 100-0

Thinking of this FH squad. Thoughts?
    McCarthy
    Digne, Maguire, Azpi
    Willian, Sterling, Pulisic, Bruno, -----
    Jesus, Ings
    (Martin; Greenwood, Taylor, Lamptey)

    Few things:
    - Can't decide on final mid: Antonio, Foden, Dilva? 11.4 to spend.
    - Maguire is differential against AWB (ML rival has him). Opt for AWB still?
    - Do I need Liverpool? Arsenal not exactly a wall on defense.

"Ole confirms Bruno Fernandes will take the 2 penalties for Man Utd tonight"
Kidding of course, but wouldn't be surprised. Ouve the 83 penalties awarded in total this season, Man Utd were given 13 of them! (scored 9,missed 4)

Have to play Lascelles if Aurier doesn't start so I could otherwise keep Mahrez and do Aurier to Digne

It’s 3 of these: Sterling, Jesus, DSilva, Foden

Just realised how much better Sterling plays without Aguero.

In the 15 games Sterling started without Aguero he got 13 goals and 4 assists.

In the 12 games Sterling started alongside Aguero he only managed 2 goals and not a single assist.

This makes sense considering when Aguero plays he is “poacher” inside and around the box. Sterling plays wide to suit this. When Aguero doesn’t play Sterling takes up this role. It’s similar to Liverpool’s system where Salah/Mane score the majority of the goals while Firmino provides. Jesus plays like Firmino in the system. I’d argue he’s essential for the run in even if he only starts 2 more games

Just curious for the reasons, KDB was pulled off early for DSilva

I wouldn't read too much into how many minutes he has played in the last game. In GW30+, KDB was benched against Burnley despite being pulled off early against Arsenal before.

I imagine that Pep will want his strongest line-up for the FA cup tie against Arsenal, so I expect KDB, Sterling, Mahrez and Jesus to start that game. If KDB also starts against Bournemouth, he'll have started 4 games in 10 days, which is an unnecessary risk for Pep. Since Sterling got his rest later, I think he's good to go for 3 games in a row and is then more likely to start against Bournemouth.

it seems like madness but it's mighty tempting, also going for FH 38 probably. Losing out on KDB at 9.5, but TV less of a concern now.
