Wood’s aerial threat bodes well for Brighton match as Burnley get behind Pope

Norwich 0-2 Burnley

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.1m)
  • Own Goals: Ben Godfrey (£4.4m)
  • Assists: Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m), Erik Pieters (£4.2m)
  • Red Cards: Emi Buendía (£6.0m), Josip Drmic (£5.3m)
  • Bonus Points: Pieters x3, Phil Bardsley x2 (£4.3m), Wood x1

Two red cards for Norwich were perhaps the key factors in Burnley’s attacking assets leaving a little to be desired by their respective Fantasy managers in Gameweek 37+.

The favourable meeting with the Canaries sparked interest players such as Chris Wood (£6.1m), Jay Rodriguez (£5.7m) and Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) in the lead-up to Saturday’s match but the New Zealand international was the only one from that trio to come away with any attacking returns.

In bizarre circumstances, Norwich found themselves reduced to nine men before half-time, thanks to recklessness shown by Emi Buendía (£6.0m) and Josip Drmic (£5.3m).

Their sendings off made this the first Premier League game to see a side suffer two red cards in the first half since 2015, highlighting how much of an enigma the opening match of Gameweek 37+ proved to be.

As a result of the man disadvantage, Daniel Farke’s men lined themselves up in exceptionally compact formation for the second half, effectively lined-up in two banks of four with no striker, in a 4-4-0 formation. That left Tim Krul (£4.6m) to do what he does best, producing seven saves across the 90 minutes.

“You know it’s going to happen. They just went to two banks of four and defended their box very well.” – Chris Wood

That obviously made it harder for Burnley to capitalise on the red cards, much to the frustration of those who had backed the Clarets hoping for more explosive hauls.

There will be some that say the freak nature of the 90 minutes makes it hard to take too many FPL lessons from, but there were a few nuggets worth analysing.

Firstly, this game highlighted once again that Wood is the clear aerial threat for Burnley and the most likely to get on the end of crosses into the box.

We chose him for the Gameweek 37+ Scout Picks on the basis that Norwich had recently been susceptible to headed attempts on goal. He may not have chosen to attack Johann Berg Gudmundsson‘s (£5.9m) first-half cross with his head, but netting it with a bicycle still demonstrates what Wood is capable of in the air.

“There was a chance he would miss all the games, so he’s done ever so well to get back out there.” – Sean Dyche

That will be encouraging for those who brought the Burnley forward in for Gameweek 37+ as he may also be useful on the final day of the season.

The Clarets face Brighton next Sunday who, between Gameweeks 30+ and 36+ conceded 23 headed attempts, third only to Norwich and Newcastle.

Those who invested in Rodriguez can certainly consider themselves unlucky not to see him come away from Carrow Road with a decent haul as his blank was not for want of trying.

In the 20th minute, the former Southampton man cut through the middle, after good hold-up play from Wood, before slicing wide.

Rodriguez then fired a powerful shot at Krul in the 38th minute, only to see the goalkeeper meet it with another good save. Had it gone in, Wood would have been credited with the assist.

Just after the hour-mark, Rodriguez nipped in at the front post to get on the end of an Ashley Westwood (£5.5m) corner, Krul on hand to make another instinctive stop.

His final opportunity came in the 83rd minute when an intricate piece of passing play set Rodriguez up on the edge of the box. He curled a high effort towards goal that looked destined for the net, but the Krul stretched sufficiently to catch it.

McNeil also had opportunities to get involved in the goals and his owners will also be cursing Krul’s heroic efforts to keep the score respectable at Carrow Road.

The young winger had Burnley’s first real chance of the game as he dropped the shoulder to lose Buendía in the middle, drove forward but fired over the bar.

He went a lot closer in the 41st minute when won a free-kick on the edge of the box. Despite his tender age, McNeil assumed responsibility for it, his direct effort deflecting off the wall and forcing a palmed save from Krul, produced as he fell to the ground from the power.

However, this match highlighted perfectly how difficult it is to pinpoint the assisters for Burnley. Wood looks central to their cross-heavy tactic, while McNeil is one of three players who provide the service. Gudmundsson’s return to the team on the right flank was the reason Wood found the net, while Westwood’s set-piece duties also make him another source of crosses.

Nick Pope (£5.1m) owners could not be displeased with what they saw on Saturday evening, as Burnley helped him achieve a 15th clean sheet of the campaign.

They might have been a little miffed that the Clarets’ shot-stopper was just one save short of an additional point, but against a Norwich side that has not troubled anyone since the restart, nobody was really expecting more than the standard total of six.

His owners would have been likely to start Pope again in Gameweek 38+ anyway but there were some interesting post-match quotes from Wood, who acknowledged that the entire Burnley squad is aware of how close he is to getting a hand on the Premier League’s Golden Glove award.

With that in mind, he made a empassioned commitment to helping Pope get another clean sheet in Gameweek 38+ when Brighton come to Turf Moor. With little left riding on that game other than Pope’s chances of winning that award, could we potentially see an even more defensive-minded performance next Sunday?

“As a team, we’ll be fighting like hell for him. He’s an outstanding goalkeeper. Hopefully, we can get him one more so he can get his hands on the Golden Glove.” – Chris Wood

If that were to be the case, Erik Pieters (£4.2m) could be a budget differential to consider on the final day of the campaign.

He came away from the Norwich game with a double-figure score having kept a clean sheet, providing an assist for Ben Godfrey‘s (£4.4m) own goal and securing all three bonus points.

Despite Gudmundsson reclaiming his station on the right of midfield, Pieters was able to keep his place in the team following Charlie Taylor‘s (£4.4m) hamstring injury and is likely to be in consideration for the left-back berth once again in Gameweek 38+.

Recent outings in midfield had clearly inspired Pieters ahead of this Norwich game, as he ventured forward to provide width, especially in the second half, going close to scoring himself just after the interval.

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Krul; Lewis, Klose (Zimmermann 46′), Godfrey, Aarons; Tettey (Vrančić 90+3′), McLean; O Hernández (Idah 86′), Buendía, Cantwell (Rupp 76′); Drmic.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, K Long, Tarkowski, Bardsley; McNeil, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson (Brady 59′); Wood (78′), Rodriguez.

Things I would like to see from FPL next season:

    1) Deadline move back an hour (i.e. two hours before first kick-off)
    2) Defensive player pricing (i.e. Pope at least £5.5m, Foden, Greenwood at £9m+, KDB, Salah, Mane at £12.5m+, Burnley defence at £5.5m+, Arsenal defence at £5.5m+, Jimenez £10m+, Ings £10m+)
    3) Reconfiguration of what a 'forward' is in FPL to make players such as Rashford, Firmino, Kane, Lacazette, more viable picks in FPL. This could be through changes in the bps system, through recategorisation of other players, changes in the points system, or a combination of all of these.

      Foden and greenwood at 9mil?!?

Yep. Makes it much harder for everyone to just go and get them in. I would like to make FPL managers really think. By pricing defensively it forces hard decisions. Otherwise you can see everyone going Pope, KDB, Salah, Arsenal defender, Greenwood, Foden etc.

Appreciate some people will disagree with defensive pricing.

Over pricing limits options, makes game more boring.

Makes other options more viable. That Southampton midfielder. That Brighton forward. That Leeds defender etc.

Having players like Greenwood and Foden so cheap isn't great, but it's not always easy to know pre-season that they'll suddenly explode onto the scene.

Pricing them so high isn't fun either.

£7.5-£8m would probably be a fairer price

#1 Understand it, but less fun

#2 Will stop differentials. People will stick with known quantities and not jump on punts.

#3 Don't get this? Forwards get mega BAPs for a goal and that alone is enough of a boon for them. For the ones you have listed, it is not the games fault that Kane drops back, Rashford is on the wing, Firmino creates space, or Lacazette is not nailed.

As I said, you can recategorise others (e.g. Salah, Mane, Martial, Sterling) who play in similar positions (is Rashford really playing a different position to Salah?). There is more than one way to do it.

The difference between Salah & Rashford is that Salah is barely ever going to play as a CF (even though he has on occasion).

Rashford absolutely could & the same goes for the others you mentioned.

Then FPL is basically rendering those forwards as crap picks. So immediately limiting the player pool. FPL ought to be, IMO, trying to make the viable player pool as wide as possible.

Where a player could play isn’t really relevant though. If we had a striker who could play as a defender when needed, should he be classified as a defender then?

Rashford has played attacking winger all season and he 100% needs to be classified as a mid next season as long Mane and Salah are still mids. Same goes for Aubameyang.

      1 reasoning behind it?
2 This would shoo away so many casuals who won't be able to fit more than one or 2 of their favourite players so very unlikely
3 Good point but probably difficult to implement

        1) FPL is a worldwide game. Trying to make it fairer by not letting people have access to team leaks before the deadline.

I have benefited loads from early team news and appreciate it is part of 'getting an edge'. But if you look through time, in any field, when the landscape changes, then regulators etc. react to it.

I've been moaning about this for years. What is the point of having a Kante, Xhaka, Matic or a Rodri in your team. I've been suggesting two clean sheet points for the "defensive labelled" midfielders but I would happily accept any sensible suggestion that brought them into the game.

UCL fantasy have points for every 3 balls won. It's actually not a good solution even though it sounds good on paper - the defensive mids consistently get 5-6 points and on average outscore the attacking minded ones if they don't score every game.

Tackles and interceptions is probably the best metric. If you got a point for every 3 then it would make quite a difference.

This season Ricardo Pereira tops tackles with 112 and top midfielder is Ndidi with 112.

It would boost defender scores by 20-30 points, though worth noting VVD averages 0.9 tackles a game so might not be many games that get points in reality.

Hence adding interceptions to get more reliable points. Ndidi has 78 for a nice round 190 ‘defensive contributions’

This could give up to 63 extra points but in reality would more likely be 30-40. Ndidi is on 81 points so getting to around 115-120 would put him on par with other Leicester players

You can play with the data here (https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/interception)

Though Ndidi is the top midfielder with these stats, would maybe need to be every 2 defensive contributions as then Ndidi is probably looking at 150-160 points. Great numbers but not Salah esque. Maybe 9m pricing

Perhaps categorising centre backs and full backs/wing backs differently - so you have to have at least one cb etc. And maybe 4 points for a defender assist? I think the pricing is ok atm - knowing when to ditch highly owned players is a key part of the interest. I wouldn’t want top 10k effective ownership to nearly always be under 100 with all players, for example

Yeah, don't mind this, although the issue would become 'what is the threshold/criteria for identifying a player that should be categorised as such'? The class of players that aren't quite defensive enough will become the new players that are left out. It would likely still increase the pool of usable players though, so I'd be in favour.

Having played some other fantasy sports games it's really apparent to me that fpl suffers from being too simple. The scoring methods are very limited. I'd like to see the scoring completely revolutionised and see opportunity for other contributions to be valued (not holding my breath of course as appreciate I will be in the minority and it would require plenty of work on the coding/stats end).

I ticked the "good post" box. It would make a great hot topic.
Changes I would like accepting it won't happen:
        1) No changing rules no matter what the circumstances during the season. (Unlimited tfrs)
        2) Getting rid of the captain. (Just punters luck)
3)Buying a WC. (16 points cost) Some people can have horrible luck. Scrap the 2 WC's we get atm.
        4) No chips except Free hit (12 points cost) (Max 2 only)
        5) Change the deadline to avoid getting unfair advantages over casuals with team news.
        6) Categorize players correctly (Salah for example)
        7) Free tfr for red flagged (injured only) players.
        8) Improve the Bonus point system.
        9) Have hard and fast rule relating rises and drops. (maybe have one day in a week dedicated to price changes.

        I think that is enough.

Congratulations you've taken all the fun out of FPL.

The captain will always be there. It is a nice tool to chase and also to inject a fun decision on a weekly basis. It increases variance too but like it or not, that is the game we're playing.

The only one I agree with is changing the deadline to 2 hours before (or 5 mins before). I think price changes are good and add some skill to the game although the lack of transparency sucks.

I like the chips right now.

Hard disagree on fringe player pricing. I think having Foden or Greenwood like youth options at sub 6.0m is good. They aren't nailed on so if they're priced so aggressively nobody would buy them over proven assets from other teams.

        1. diesel001
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

They'll be fairly nailed next season unless Man Utd buy Sancho etc. So you put them at 6.0m for fairly nailed players in two the most attacking teams in the PL. Then you wonder why everyone has Foden and Greenwood and the game is too template.

Demarai Gray is an example of a fringe player. But with Silva leaving and OGS sticking with Greenwood, they are no longer fringe players.

It is pretty obvious what the template picks are shaping up to be next season already - Pope, TAA, Arsenal defender, Wolves defender, Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Foden, Greenwood.

That is 9 players locked in already. FPL should be looking to make such a template unviable with the initial £100m budget.

Greenwood and Foden will be 8.5m at least as they’re in and around the first team squad. Nailed Wolves/Arsenal defence will be 5.5m min, TAA likely 7.5 or 8m, KDB and Fernandes likely 11m+ and 10m+ respectively.

I don’t think that’s out of whack with how FPL have managed price adjustments previously.

Problems come where there is massive overperformance from a Kane, Alli, Greenwood, Mahrez, Vardy etc. I don’t think FPL often make horrific price decisions based on what they know at the start of a season, but maybe the back up/youngsters from the top sides should be priced higher on the off chance they end up in the first team doing well.

In the swedish fantasy game we have some interesting chips.

Park the bus - all defenders get double points
Forward - all your forwards get double points
Two captains - that explains itself

The swedish fpl also rewards every player for having a good game through attacking and defensive bonus points, not limited to just 3 best

The game having a deadline to register a team is also important. Take for instance not being able to set up a team after GW 10. It put a stop to managers who create a new team every GW just to appear at the top for the GW.

Id' like to see auto-subs get 1/2 points

Maybe drop the C / VC and have two players each gw nominated for double points (two captains)

I'd like an additional "legacy league" ... You retain you team and value year on year but those teams would be excluded from the normal league (current TV is 111.5m). Only one legacy team allowed per player

Agree with the prices. They need somthing to kill off the template manager and make people think for themselves instead of being spoonfed by twitter and other social media as it is getting out of hand now.( worse thing about the game for me as a long time player) .

Would love the man in the stand baps it means a little less focus on stats but it will never happen.

Increasing the prices and make it so people have to decide themselves a bit more would be welcomed.

Definitely move deadline back for sure. Not fair on users in a different time zone for one.

Make Salah, Mane etc forwards because that's really what they are .

No chips allowed for double gws too . Makes FPL even more of a lottery

Ahem. I was going to say I think one really easy way to increase diversity in teams and make managers think more is to limit the number of players from each team to two.

Would really change so-called template teams and increase variance. And would be really easy to implement

I'd like to see forced team management ... you get -8 each week and 3 transfers, before any further hits deduction
It's up to you to make use of those 3 transfers, if you don't you still get -8

Just a few ideas, to make it more fun:

          1) Injured players should lose some of their transfer value (buying and selling).

          2) Immediate bonus points for three consecutive starts.

          3) Newby January signings should all arrive at a budget price.

i´m not disagreeing but the problem of pricing is that it is a prediction and thereby always inherent it will be open for mistakes which is the hard part of FPL players life, to identify those. Yep, you can price them higher but what about SHU for instance, before the season what was the reason they priced them so low? So if you hike up Burnley defenders to 5.5, then West Brom def at 4.5 suddenly could be next seasons SHU, you don´t know, i don´t know and the ones setting the prices can´t know.

I think they have been more proactive in that the 4.5 options in defence ha been lesser than it was, the attacking defenders almost exclusively got 5.0 price tag before season (not including Lundstram but that was not just a pricing mistake but also classification error) and a lot of mid priced options from mid table teams also priced a bit more steep.

          Two big ones for me:

          - team of the week accounts for hits taken

          - price rises only happen on deadline day when game updates

Is there a danger he doesn't start the final game, it's not as if it is his final match ever for City. Could be a trap, hopefully not but could be.

Really cant look past a back line of:
            Martinez 3.9
            TAA Tierney Pieters 3.9 3.9

2 attacking full backs with good fixtures and Pieters to cover Burnley defence.

            RMFHTs are pretty annoying.

Like you get to pick a team for one week. Copy the scout picks, choose some differentials. I don't see why you'd ask for advice on that. If you're a fantasy manager, you should be able to pick 11 players for one week and honestly, nobody else's advice will help because it's just one week and anything can happen in one week.

To get thoughts on options e.g. is Auba a better pick than Sterling?

Yes, anything can happen, but we saw yesterday, with Chris Wood, how you can spot players for a one week punt and it can pay off.

Fair enough but then ask that specific question instead of doing a blanket RMFHT.

I will concede that it can be useful this week regarding mini leagues and who to pick in order to chase or defend leads. But that's about it.

Why is advice on which 11 players to choose out of the hundreds invalid in some way?

Do you get this haughty about wildcard teams?

No because Wildcard teams have further ramifications that last into a season.

Longer term decision making is what separates great from good managers. And planning ahead on a WC takes time and effort where people can give genuinely good suggestions you hadn't considered.

Asking for specific advise makes no sense to me. Discuss approaches to the game and not a one off decision. What are you trying to learn by asking A or B? Grow, develop, evolve by delving deeper.

Well it's micro vs macro decision making.

And right now, micro decision making is king because it's one week. Aubameyang or Sterling is a very relevant question to ask this week for instance if it's just one week.

IMO salah is way better than Mané (Mané has TAA crossing to him).
Salah without Mané is just awesome, he can be the talisman.
But on 38 they both play and share the points.

I have quite a good solution here.

Start of next season you are given an option of autosubs or real time subs which cannot be changed.

This should sort out the problem of time zones.

Plus, there are 4 players on the bench. Why are we not given the option of subbing those players on during a game.

You should then also be allowed to keep the points from the player you sub off and collect any points from the player you sub on.

Would much prefer this to the captain chip.

The amount of time I spend on FPL is already more than enough, having to keep track of every game to sub in players in real time would push me over the edge I think!

While the option to sub works with CL fantasy, because teams each get 3 games on Tuesday, 3 games on Wednesday, it wouldn't work well in PL as players from teams who always play later in the week (Europa League teams) would be at a disdavantage.

Arteta doing what he can with the tools at his disposal. i am not knocking him. Wanting the win vs a nice game to watch can be different when loyalties play a part. Actually, I quite enjoyed the game yesterday TBH

With all due respect to the man and what his family are going through, does anyone know if Aurier returned yesterday?

                1. Eze Really?

Either way, his mind may not be on the game.

He already played one game and wasn't entirely distracted. Granted, having reunited with family it could be more pronounced.

Early tinkering. Boly to Robertson as my final transfer of the season? Would leave me with this squad

                Pope
                TAA Robertson Egan
                Salah KDB Mahrez Foden Fernandes
                Kane Nketiah

                3.9; Greenwood, AWB, Lamptey

                1. Eze Really?

                Which moves are best?

                a) Cantwell to McNeil
                b) Cantwell to Antonio, Jimenez to Ings -4

Problem with removing Raul for a hit is nobody is buying Chelsea defs because they suspect he'll score. He can get 9pts, it's like an Auba brace once you add the hit on.

Multiple teams is very very poor form (at best)

Funny old game. 12 from 1 this week who I brought in and last week 8 from 6 at one stage.

Chances of a player with hamstring injury to be match fit in a week?
                  Yes, I'm talking about Taylor.

5th in my ML, 62 behind 1st and only I have Kane and Sterling.
                  Kane is Captain too.

Could be a massive opportunity to claw it back!

Any obvious changes here for 38. No chips 1FT, not adverse to taking a hit if needed but I am chasing

                  Pope (Button)
                  Digne Tark Boly (Holgate Kiko)
                  Salah kdb dilva Bruno Martial
                  Jesus Rashford (Nketiah)

Don’t think there will be many goals in United match. Would like Antonio
                  Any changes here?

Can Foden finally do something this week to make himself a great GW38 option?

Given his price it would make for a much easier FH

Problem is if he has a great week in 37 and plays 90 he won't start in 38...

If Foden starts vs watford means he will be in the bench with Norwich.
