Improved Villa defence brings goal difference into relegation battle

Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Trézéguet (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Tyrone Mings (£4.4m)
  • Bonus Points: Mings x3, Trézéguet x2, Jack Grealish x1 (£5.9m), Ezri Konsa x1 (£4.3m)

Aston Villa put the club’s Premier League destiny in their own hands with a massive 1-0 win over Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

It was a result that took Dean Smith’s men above Watford, whose goal difference had taken a battering at the hands of Manchester City, setting up a relegation showdown on the final day of the season.

Villa will travel to West Ham knowing that a win will keep them up, as will bettering the results of Watford and Bournemouth.

The Hornets have perhaps drawn the short straw in that they travel to face an Arsenal side that might want to produce a reaction to their Gameweek 37+ defeat at Villa Park, while Bournemouth face an out-of-sorts Everton side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sure to have felt Tuesday’s loss most keenly, especially as it left him three goals short of Jamie Vardy‘s (£9.7m) tally in the Premier League Golden Boot race.

With Watford managerless and conceding a minimum of three goals in four of their last six outings, the Arsenal striker could be a force to be reckoned with on Sunday… We know Aubameyang is capable of man-of-the-match displays, as he showed in the recent FA Cup win over Manchester City.

“We need to transmit this enthusiasm and passion. There’s going to be some ups and downs but it’s good sometimes to see the reality and improve.” – Mikel Arteta

It was their continually improving defence that secured the win for Aston Villa against Arsenal, although they did ride their luck as Eddie Nketiah (£4.3m) struck the inside the post late on.

Villa have now kept two clean sheets in the last three matches, each one leading to a massive three points for the team. Without the changes Smith made at the back, they would not be in the position they are ahead of the final weekend of the season.

And now that goal difference is set to play such a key factor in the Premier League relegation battle, the Villans could play conservatively, opting to utilise the pace and guile of Jack Grealish (£5.9m) on the counter-attack as they did on Tuesday evening.

“We have to make sure we win at West Ham. We knew we had to show a lot of courage and work rate. It was a real team performance today. We defended the box very well, I don’t remember Pepe Reina making a save. The players all grew in stature tonight. Jack had his best game since the restart, Ezri has gone onto another level. It was a real team performance and it had to be.” – Dean Smith

If Villa were to execute their Gameweek 37+ gameplan at West Ham on Sunday, it could make life harder for assets such as Michail Antonio (£7.1m) and Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m), who have been in decent form of late.

However, relying on Villa for goals themselves might not be the smartest move for Fantasy managers in Gameweek 38+. After all, they have scored more than one goal just once since the return of Premier League football.

As much as Smith’s men managed the win over Arsenal well, there were few moments of real danger posed by their attackers.

Trézéguet‘s (£5.2m) winning goal was a stunning effort although it might be hard to replicate at the London Stadium.

Outside of that strike, Villa and their Arsenal counterparts were mostly feeding on scraps.

The home side came closest to pressing home their advantage in the 74th minute when Grealish went on a powerful counter-attacking drive. His pass into substitute Keinan Davis (£4.3m) was perfectly weighted to allow the striker to get one-on-one with Emi Martínez (£4.4m), only to pull his effort wide of the far post.

John McGinn (£5.2m) then had a powerful shot saved in the 77th minute, the Arsenal goalkeeper able to stand up to the effort.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Elmohamady (Guilbert 25′); Hourihane (Nakamba 73′), D Luiz, McGinn (Lansbury 90+3′); Grealish, Samatta (Davis 72′), Trézéguet.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Kolasinac, D Luiz (Pépé 60′), Holding; Saka (Tierney 60′), Torreira (Xhaka 46′), Ceballos, Cédric (Willock 79′); Aubameyang, Lacazette, Nketiah.

I might go for Slab, chance of a set piece header. 2 conceded in the last 6 away.

The attackers depend on tonight. If one of Martial/Rash ends the night on 19 goals they’ll be extra desperate to reach 20

If united win tonight then they'll be pretty tight on Sunday and look to play on the break. Which means you've got a good chance of points from any of the front 4, but can't see multiple goals of double digits from them.

See how tonight goes but I think Rashford is probably the best option but if you're on a free hit I wouldn't got with loads of United

    Repost from last thread.

Now hesitated on what to do with all these assumptions

    - Sterling likely to start and challenge golden boot
    - Jesus, Foden, B Silva played a rare 90 minutes and could be rested
    - KDB played 90 minutes in the last two and could be rested
    - Mahrez, D Silva rested and likely to start

    Salah - KDB - Bruno - Martial - Saka
    Vardy - Ings - Greenwood

My original plan of Vardy > Jesus doesn't look good now and I don't trust Auba. Is Kane a good option? I didn't see him in last game.

    1. Miguel Sanchez
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

KDB chasing assist record - one behind Henry's record of 20 so needs two to surpass it.

It will require -4 to drop someone. Now, Salah > Sterling gives exact fund for Vardy > Kane.

Up front I'd say the best bests are Rashford and Kane. You have 3 United so it would be Harry for me. I'd prob not bother starting Saka though.

Umm.. I forgot to say that I will have BB chip activated in GW38, so it will be 553.

Saka (WAT) doesn't look bad, but extra motivation of Watford to fight for survival might be important factor here.

By the way, I tried the recommended option and found this.

          Saka -> D Silva
          Vardy -> 7.6m

          Only Wood (6.2m) looks interesting.

        why dilva over sterling?

sterling has 4 double digit returns in his last 5 pl starts and is gunning for golden boot. (need to score 4 which is very possible against norwich)

He needs a boot alright! He was poor against Arsenal. Missed two second half chances that he'd score in his sleep if he was on form. The other 4 in better form. See how he goes v Chelsea tonight bug Minamino looked way sharper than him when introduced. Minamino's well rested sure and Salah loked tired but he might do better tonight after a longer break between games.

Surely this "X is going for the golden boot" has to be one of the laziest justifications out there for getting (or avoiding) a particular player

Do people really think any striker in the premier league doesn't step out onto the pitch absolutely chomping at the bit to score, in any fixture, whether they are involved in a golden boot race or not?

We've all seen it - whether its in 5 aside, sunday league, conference level, right up to elite football - attackers want to score goals, period - it's hardwired into their personalities & has helped them pass through all those filters through cuthtroat youth setups & ultra competitive professional leagues on the way to where they are today (where hundreds & thousands of similarly talented rivals failed) - its not something they can switch on & off or turn up or down

The Golden Boot in & of itself isn't a factor imo - it's a red herring from an FPL perspective

One thing to be goal hungry. Another for a team with no worries like Southampton to try and set up Ings up with more chances than in a game with value. But you're spot on, a player should be as hungry and relaxed in a nothing game as a game that counts for a golden boot, Euro qualification ir relegation.

If you peel that back though - what's different with Ings when he's "going for golden boot" versus Ings for the remainder of the season? From an FPL perspective it's a non-factor imo - a total red herring

Yes, but for his price and form he's still a good pick. Social media and Sky Sports love those 'going for golden boit' 'must win game' 'relegation 6 pointer' tags so let them have their fun. Still unsure whether to go 5-2 or 4-3 for freehit.

That's my point - he's a good pick but not because he's going for the golden boot 🙂

well if someone isnt on pens & they need the goal for the golden boot they are more likely to be given it

Here is the current golden boot standing:

        Vardy 23
        Ings 21
        Auba 20
        Sterling 19
        Salah 19
        Mane 17
        Martial 17
        Rashford 17

Which of these players are you now picking, that you wouldn't have picked before, because of the golden boot giving them penalties? Sterling? If so - I would say its his 8 goals & 4 assists in the last month or so, plus his fixture at home to Norwich that's making him a good FPL pick, and not the fact that he's "OMG GOING FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT"

I'm still not having it as an acceptable justifcation for FPL decision making unfortunately

It's undeniable some players switch it up a level in certain games, especially with the golden boot on the line. We've seen it multiple times over the years. It's narcissistic, sure, and slightly disrespectful. But they keep doing it.

Do you have any examples? And how do you know that (a) they "switched it up" purposely (i.e. that it wasn't something that would have happened anyway) and (b) that the "switching it up" was due to the race for the golden boot?

My point isn't that certain players perform better in certain games than others - it's that the golden boot as a factor is a glorified irrelevance & should be stripped away from the decision making process

Thinking hard about Sterling Corgzz, im not going to lie

A teamsheet would help tremedously - if they both started i might lean towards Raheem... in the abscence of a teamsheet i think Dilva's security of start may have to lead though - not sure

            what about yourself...
