The Promoted

What to expect from Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa in FPL

FPL managers are set for entertainment when Marcelo Bielsa finally arrives in the top-flight of English football.

The Leeds United manager joins the Premier League heralded as an unprecedented individual, his personality likely to impact your FPL team at some point in the 2020/21 season.

With this piece, we are launching our series of articles on The Promoted, so that the Fantasy community is well-prepared for the latest sides to join FPL.

We are starting with El Loco, as the Leeds boss is affectionately known and, later in the week we will assess the Championship winners’ defensive and attacking underlying statistics to pick out the early contenders for inclusion in our squads.

To help us with our research, we have brought in the expertise of Beren Cross, a journalist for LeedsLive who has covered United extensively during Bielsa’s time at the club.

What is Bielsa’s background?

Bielsa is considered to be one of the most enigmatic characters in world football after three decades of management under his belt, including spells with Argentina and Chile’s national teams, Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, Lazio and Lille.

The Leeds United job is his first in England but the Argentinian is well-known on the world stage, reportedly a huge influence on some of the biggest coaches on the Premier League scene, including one Pep Guardiola.

“My admiration for Marcelo Bielsa is huge. For me, he’s the best coach in the world.” – Pep Guardiola

“He’s one of the best managers in the world. And he’s like my father.” – Mauricio Pochettino

During his time as a football manager, Bielsa has earned a reputation for exceptional levels of attention to detail. Going into every game, he will have mapped out potential solutions to any situation that could ensue on the field.

“If players weren’t human, I’d never lose.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“Playing in a Bielsa side is a bit like being in the military. It’s tactics, tactics, tactics and fitness.” – Mateusz Klich

Nothing encapsulates Bielsa’s attention to detail, or demeanour better than the already notorious incident of Spygate.

Always known as a man dedicated to in-depth analysis of his opponents’ tactics, it was discovered in January 2019, that the Leeds manager had sent coaches to spy on Derby Country’s training sessions ahead of a key Championship clash.

However, instead of denying the allegations, Bielsa admitted spying on Derby, as well as every other opponent Leeds had faced that season.

What followed was an hour-long press conference, which Beren Cross attended, in which Bielsa gave a PowerPoint presentation on how he profiles upcoming opposition. Such is the meticulousness of his research and analysis, the conclusion of this unprecedented press briefing was that Bielsa did not need to spy on other clubs to know how to beat them.

Leeds were then fined £200,000 for their involvement in the scandal but, summing up Bielsa’s character perfectly, he insisted on paying the fee out of his own pocket.

Having Bielsa in the Premier League is sure to add a new level of drama for the neutral fans, but how will it impact FPL? Let’s have a closer look…

What style of football does Bielsa use?

To get an accurate fix on the way Leeds are likely to set-up their stall in the Premier League, we asked Beren Cross what style of football Bielsa likes to use.

It certainly appears that his side will make matches entertaining for fans next season, which could result in goals at both ends of the pitch.

“The nearest tactical style your readers will be able to compare it to is Pep Guardiola’s City set-up. United press high, they mark man-to-man across the pitch, a feature many opposition managers pointed out as being unique in the Championship last season. The Whites are renowned for being the fittest team in the league. Described as machines by some in the way they relentlessly press and harry. Many winners came late in matches while opposition tired and they kept going until the bitter end.” – Beren Cross

Those already trying to get an accurate fix on Leeds’ line-ups for 2019/20, should start with their regularly used formations, especially as they are known for a somewhat changeable shape.

“It’s very fluid, but the simplest description would be a 4-1-4-1 with the wingers and full-backs pushing up to create a 3-3-1-3 at times. It is something he sticks to a lot, but the formation is generally determined by how many strikers the opposition employ. If it’s one striker they go 4-1-4-1 and if it’s two strikers, they go 3-3-1-3.” – Beren Cross

As for whether the personnel within these systems can be relied upon for starts, it seems as though Leeds could come into the Premier League to match the likes of Burnley or Wolves for high number of reliable starters.

As you have already seen, Bielsa’s style of management is unique so the fact that his players are attuned to this will go a long way to helping them start games regularly in the top-flight.

“Leeds are a very settled side. Bielsa only tends to change the team for suspensions and injuries, even during poor runs of form. They are so fit, fatigue is rarely an issue. The aforementioned Bamford would go 10 matches without a goal in the Championship and not be dropped, much to many fans’ dismay. However, Bielsa is loyal and his players run through brick walls for him.” – Beren Cross

How does Bielsa handle the press?

Press conferences form a big part of how Fantasy managers pick their team, so it is always important to assess what role Bielsa will play in that.

Are Leeds going to be a team we can rely on for accurate injury information, or will Bielsa replace Eddie Howe as the Premier League’s non-committal team news pedaller?

“Bielsa is cordial with the press, but he is a private man. He does not grant any one-to-one interviews. He treats every journalist the same and gives them all a chance to ask their questions in press conferences. He is very forthcoming with injury news. There was a period, in his first season, Bielsa would name the starting XI in press conferences, much to supporters’ frustrations. He has grown out of that now, but is very honest about injuries and who is likely to replace outgoing personnel.” – Beren Cross

Keep an eye out for our articles on Leeds’ defence and attack later this week and, for more detail on United for the 2020/21 season, make sure to follow Leeds United Live on Twitter.

Bloated wages on an aging player when we already have plenty of tricky wide players already.
      Not buying this one.

I'd much rather develop players like Saka and Pepe (I don't count him as a flop just yet - let's see how he does in his second season), and I don't think Willian is a big enough name to offset this by persuading Auba to stay.

He's leaving Chelsea because they won't give him a 3-year contract. Does that mean Arsenal have? For a position that doesn't need strengthening?

Arteta went up in my estimation as I watched the Cup Final, for his reading of the game and tactical adjustments. He has the making of a fine manager. However, if he's sanctioning this (and he may not have a say in it to be fair), it does raise doubts.

        Seems like an agent move.

Happy to take Willian if it helps bring Coutinho in. 😆

        Nelson a goner though.

Hadn't thought about him smoothing the way for Coutinho. That would be interesting. Might knock my plans to have Ceballos into touch though.

Is it a dead team thing? If so, I think A would be better, if Rudiger is nailed next year and they get a decent CB to tighten up a bit. I'd wait as long as possible though as so many things can and will happen between now and next season.

Oh ofc. Just preliminary drafting here.

Currently leaning Lloris + Rudiger. Purely because in FanTeam you get a bonus point if your team wins the match.

Ah that's too bad. That prize pool is very impressive and that guarantee is massive. Big value in that game.

No bonus points makes forwards in that game garbage though imo. Will definitely be playing 4-5-1 I think with scoring the way it is and basically only pick players from top 6 sides because of the bonus point for your team winning the game (which I hate as a scoring mechanism)

Prices in this game are interesting.

        Lloris 5.0, Leno 5.0, Pickford 4.5, Fabianski 4.5
        Tierney 5.0, Davies 5.0, Rudiger 4.5, Luiz 4.5

Aurier is a stupid 6.0 so will definitely avoid.

I'm really excited to see a Bielsa team in the PL. Looking forward to the articles on the players.

    But a question ....

With so much emphasis on fitness, how will a truncated pre-season affect them? Will they start the season with sub-optimum fitness, or will they conk out in the second half of the season as Bielsa teams are wont to do?

    1. Camzy

I'm guessing the latter. I will probably pick up the Leeds forward to start the season. Hopefully it isn't Bamford coz the guy is not PL quality. Watkins would be interesting. Or basically anyone else.

I'm looking at a potential 4.5 defender to step off the bench and a playing 3rd forward either from Leeds or Brentford. Re. Leeds if they are fit to start and play the Bielsa way effectively from the get-go, they'll be desirable FPL assets. If they run out of steam later we just ditch them.

Bielsa is probably already drilling them for next season so I expect them to be as ready as any team.

Saying that I think they will do there best work in the first have of the season Andy.Bielsa does run em hard and with the players not being of the high standards that the PL has then I expect problems to start popping up around Christmas.

Bielsa done well in the Argentinian domestic league but it is not a coincidence that they have a lot less games in the season imo.

Strengthening the squad size will help but he does try to stick to more or less the same 11 every game. They'll start the season fit as trouts and raring to go. The first 4/5 games are so important

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

He has to. Learning the Bielsa way is a huge learning curve. I wouldn't have any players Leeds purchase now, and I'd be worried if any newbies are in the first team from the off.

Ogie - before Covid hit and I was expecting them to last the season and get promoted, my thinking was 38 PL games as opposed to 46 in the Champers League will benefit the players enormously, but the new circumstances might cause them to struggle in the latter stages. From an FPL point of view though, you just look out for the early signs of fatigue and shift them out. But I am hoping to supplement the premium players in my squad with bargain surprises from leeds and, hopefully, Brentford.

A truncated pre season wont be the worst thing. The diff is that they have been playing regular football 1.5 months before the season kicked off so that would help. I only see it affecting new signings instead. So expect them to come inside the team only around 1-1.5 months into the new season

Manchester United negotiations with BVB for #Sancho are now in ‘advanced stage’.
Man Utd always wanted to pay him using ‘add ons’ and ‘installments’ after virus. Still no agreement but talks on.
Personal terms are not a problem - his contract would be until June 2025. #MUFC

Sancho is now ‘waiting’ to understand if the two clubs will find an agreement or not. He’d like to join Man Utd. But it’s up to the clubs and BVB are pushing to decide soon because they’d need a replacement if Sancho will leave. #MUFC

Just repeating the gossip. Jimi would good for United but an FPL disaster. Grealish - he'd just step on the toes of Bruno imo. I'm just repeating the more substantial rumours from the serious rags. I'd prefer nothing comes of them.

Reports said grealish was intended for depth of good players but United will look elsewhere because of unrealistic demands by Aston Villa. And Jimenez is plain untrue.

Rotation does not make an asset a bad FPL pick.

Look at KDB, Sterling, Mahrez, Aguero, Jesus. Points galore.

Likelihood is that Sancho, Martial, Rashford will play the vast majority of matches. If you think Utd can score 80+ goals this season then they are probably a good pick.

I think Helder Costa will be great value. He was getting in much more attacking positions at the end of the season getting in behind the fullbacks or running in past Bamford. 5 goals 8 assists in 46apps (league and cup) can see him getting a similar return in the Prem .. Nailed starter on the right wing now he has signed for £15m. He is quick, a good dribbler and can finish. I predict his FPL price will be £5.5m and a total of between 120 - 140 points

Pogba was 8.5 no reason to be higher, probably lower to 8 or even 7.5
Bruno will not be 11 like people here are expecting. He started at 8, probably will be 9 or 9.5 max.
Rasford started at 8.5, he will be 9 or 9.5 max.
Martial will be moved up and will be 8 or 8.5
Sancho, if he joins, 1st season in the PL he will not be more expensive than BF for sure.

Now that is interesting. It strongly supports my seemingly controversial intention to go 3-5-2 with my 3 nailed defenders being TAA, VVD and Robbo.
I'm looking at 3 premium midfielders and the rest made up of budget players.
It means I have a relatively weak forward line - 2 mid-price and a benchy.

      1. Warby84

I'm intending on running a 4-5-2 squad. 8.5 on gk, 2 x premium DF, 2x premium mid and 1x premium fw with the rest filler of best possible caliber given remaining budget. Can the play 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 4-5-1 depending on fixtures, etc.

          He is say 4-5-2 SQUAD.

Hence will have have to bench either a def, mid or for each week depending on fixtures.

          1. ritzyd
            • 6 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Yep, exactly, basically its a core of 3-4-1 and having to bench one of the extra df, mf or fw each week depending on fixtures. For example on fanteam those 3 are bertrand, soucek and antonio so would have to bench one each week.

            1. ritzyd
              • 6 Years
              3 years, 7 months ago

Obviously those will no doubt change before kickoff but you get the idea . . . .soucek may become podence for example as would prefer if the three played for different teams

I thought about this as normally a playing striker its 1-2M above base price while a playing Defender is only 0.5 above base price.

And mids its possible to have a playing midfielder at base price.

Hence in order to get most out of your 100M having a dead forward seems to be the way to go.

I normally chicken out of this as its not nice having dead players..hahahah

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

A good read - interesting to note:

“Despite the value being in upgrading the defence, there are generally not enough high scoring premium defenders to make five at the back worthwhile.“

This is where things could be (very?) different this year

VVD, TAA, Robbo, Doherty, Laporte... all Five of the FPL Defensive Goliaths look to be well capable of landing in the 175 - 225 range if they (and their key defensive teammates) avoid injury

Tierney (Arteta effect) & Aurier (Mourinho effect) also look intruiging

If Chelsea get a keeper then Azpi or Reece James could also emerge and be able to start translatOMG some of the best underlying defensive stats in the league into something other than goal after goal after goal conceded

Then there’s AWB who has 3 assists, 9 cleansheets and 10 baps in his last 13 starts (I.e. since Bruno came in)...

If anything it looks like quite a long list of premium defenders is taking shape this season

Have to say - Laporte in particular could be a steal - I’d expect a City to tighten up a fair bit with him back

That's the trick. We know who the sure-fire haulers will be, that's why they're premium-priced. The trick is to find the hidden gems. My view is we simply have no idea. People here will assert with absolute certainty this or that player - it's all noise. It's a matter of spotting them early as they emerge and jump on the bandwagon, accepting that more often than not the wheels will promptly fall off.

Last season the surprise packages were in the Sheff United defence, so this time I'm looking closely at Leeds and Brentford if they get promoted. In terms of the 17 teams in the PL last season, I'm not expecting much movement, therefore few surprise elements. But I'll probably be proved wrong.

To me, Fraser's season-long sulk got Bournemouth relegated and cost nice Eddie his job. If I were a PL manager I'd take that on board and not consider having him on the team.

Wilson - Callum, you mean? Villa.

I’m sure it’s been discussed here already, but what are people’s thoughts on starting with TAA, Robbo and VVD. If you had midfielders priced that way who score 170-210 per season, you’d have them straight away. You’ll lose captaincy options for Salah/Mané, but should be able to afford enough Chelsea/Man City/Man Utd to have a viable captain each week, if not TAA with the armband.

Note - just typed this up then saw Andy_Social post above, but I’m posting anyway!!!!

I always chicken out of big at the back on a GW3 wild card!! I think it’s a long term strategy and you have to stick with it and use your FTs in midfield and attack.

Yeh, you gotta keep the faith if the first few games don't produce. Unless an unforeseen event happens like Alisson transforms into Adrian again, but what are the chances?

Just to add, with Bruno and Kev sharing the armband in midfield, I think making up the rest of the squad with well-chosen budget sorts gives you a viable squad.

Which i guess supported the kdb, bruno argument. In fanteam kdb and bruno are 12.5/11 whereas sterling rashford are 11/10 so just feels better and the extra cash goes a long way.

There’ll be a few enablers, I don’t want to go with untested at the start as I have in the past. Wood at 6.5 might be nice, also Che Adams at 5.5 seemed to be progressing nicely. Those two with a slightly more expensive option and four in midfield, or maybe one, a relative cheapie and one solid option and five in midfield with Bruno/KDB rotation.

Is nobody considering Pogba next season? Obviously I'm initially basing this off FanTeam who have priced him kindly at 7.5 but if he comes in around 8 on FPL he surely could be a good way into the United team for those of us who want KDB, Salah/ Mane and Trent etc. Losing set pieces is the biggest deterrent though and I would expect him to finish the 4th highest United attacker if he stays fit.

Great player when in the mood but will be too deep to be an optimum FPL asset for his price anyway.

Fair enough I'm just trying to figure out who I could sacrifice. I really like the idea above of triple Liverpool defence instead of Mane/ Salah but that would mean getting rid of Boly for Robertson and downgrading either Ings of Jiminez to an Ayew/ 6.5 forward which at the moment until we see fixtures etc I'm not feeling.

Could be if they treat it as a pre-season friendly, honing a few tactical issues. It won't be intense though or particularly watchable! But I'd say the chances of that are less than 50%

Nah second-string I'd say. Players need a rest. They looked very tired in the latter stages of the PL.

      Pogba Matic
      Sancho Bruno Rashford
      Martial

      Something like:

      DDG
AWB, Maguire, ____, Shaw (Dalot, Lindelol, Bailly, Williams)
      Matic, Pogba (Mctomintay, Fred)
Sancho, Bruno, Rashford (James, Mata, Greenwood)
      Martial (Greenwood, Ighalol)

Greenwood should still hopefully get loads of games across all front 3 positions - 20+ starts & 20+ sub appearances I’d imagine which is plenty of football at 18

The big gap is a world class centrehalf to slot in alongside Slabhead

Yeah - let's petition OT & FPL Towers for Greenwood to play 30 full matches and be 4.5.
Realistically he won't be playing as much as he (or we) hoped but I do hope that FPLT take that into consideration when pricing him.

I can see him coming on regularly against tired defences and filling his boots. At the right price, I'd still beinterested.

If Sancho gets that starting role, will he still be reclassified? More like 6.5-7.0 fwd?

Forward or midfield, at 6.5 I'd get him.

Yeah I could easily see something like that happening

It might be the first time we have an actual viable supersub for FPL

No better manager to instill the crafty ways of the supersub either - Ole himself was the original gangster of that particular role 🙂

Lindelol? Have some respect 🙂 He's not world class but still a very good defender. Arguably had a better season than Maguire overall imo but he's not English so won't get the praise.

He'd be a great third choice imo, but not a great starter - the way Ayew bullied him in the Old Trafford defeat for example, several other cases of him being targeted by the opposition - no doubt they tightened up tremendously when Bruno landed (7 conceded in 14 games)... But its always a worry that Lindelof will go missing and Lindelol will already in his stead

With all the money going on Sancho though he may get a stay of execution

Absolutely yeah. I do think we need another CB who compliments Maguire better. Lindelof is a quality back up.

Taken from the article linked by Marko further up the page on the effective use of budget, the below clearly highlights how stretched the budget will be trying to get 2 in from mane/salah/Kdb/sterling

    GK: Ederson | 5.5m | 169
    DEF: Andrew Robertson | 6m | 213
    DEF Aymeric Laporte | 5.5m | 177
    DEF: Trent Alexander-Arnold | 5m | 185
    MID: Sadio Mane | 9.5m | 231
    MID: Raheem Sterling | 11m | 234
    MID: Eden Hazard | 10.5m | 238
    MID: Ryan Fraser | 5.5m | 181
    MID: Gylfi Sigurdsson | 7.5m | 182
    FWD: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang | 11m | 205
    FWD: Raul Jiminez | 5.5m | 181

Jimenez or say ings will not be budget forwards and likely cost the same combined as auba and jimi as illustrated

Taa/robbo will cost 1.5 to 2 mil more than this illustration

Say pulisic in for hazard saves you a mil, mane & sterling Or salah & Kdb are sure to cost an

There will be new budgets this year. Price list gets released and everyone says that it's going to be impossible to build a decent team with big hitters, but there's always a budget option or two that emerge...

    Hi all

Anyone planning on entering a side in the Fantasy PL game on Fanteam?

Been trying to draft a team but the pricing seems quite harsh, particularly for mids and forwards.

I think a defence-heavy team with 4 or even 5 at the back looks optimal.

Favourite fpl memory? Mine was a few years back in a cold Berlin, waiting miserably while my wife totalled my credit card in a department store, my team at last checking had a miserable 5 points with most played. Finally got connection and spirits soared when Alexis (captain) yielded me 46 odd points. The ensuing bratwurst and weiss bier never tasted so sweet!
