Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could prove to be one of the most effective budget defenders in Fantasy Premier League this season.

The 21-year-old defender looks certain to fill the gap left in the Wolves team by a long-term injury to Jonny Otto (£5.5m).

The Spaniard is unlikely to feature for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men for an extended period following an operation on his damaged anterior cruciate ligament, injured against Olympiakos earlier this month.

Preliminary estimates indicate that Jonny may not play until 2021, which could unlock Vinagre’s FPL potential as a set-and-forget budget option.

After two years as an understudy on the left-hand side of Wolves’ wing-back system, Vinagre finally has a chance to string together consistent starts in 2020/21. That could see him surpass his 24 and 32-point total scores from the two previous campaigns by a considerable margin.

In fact, Vinagre may even act as a powerful differential in the early weeks of the campaign provided we don’t see massive ownership shifts between now and Gameweek 1. The left wing-back currently sits in 11.7% of Fantasy teams, roughly half the ownership of Matt Doherty (£6.0m).

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), owned by 56%, is currently the only more fashionable defender than the Republic of Ireland international and the heavy backing for Wolves’ right wing-back could see Vinagre slip under the radar for those outside the hardcore Fantasy community.

This article serves to bring the Wolves youngster into the light, examining what he produced in fleeting appearances during 2019/20 using some key underlying statistics.

As this article uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Are Wolves defenders worth owning for 2020/21?

Do people remember that we have 1 free transfer each week and 2 WC so we can basically change our starting 11's 5 teams a season.
I think the comparison over a season between Doherty and Mitrovic is useless.
You want to start with the one you think will score in the first few weeks, not across the whole season.

Take your point. It's all about harvesting points when freely available. Like to think Doherty is vastly better than Mitro!

Draft nr 2, switched to 4-4-2 and its ofc dependent on fixtures with especially the wolves and liverpool double up in the defence. What do you think ?

Very nice team....Can I ask why you went McCarthy and not use the Ryan & Button double up and why Ings over Jimenez ??

Just think southampton is more solid as a team defensively but fixtures will be the decider. Its ryan or mccarty. Ings more explosive imo and more likely to get hauls but jimenez/ings are both top picks in my book. People say ings is overpriced but I dont agree, key will be for him to stay injury free and I think he will score 15-20 goals again this season

McCarthy provides best value for price if you take minutes played into concideration. Last season he played only 2520 minutes compared to Pope, Ryan, Henderson who all played 3420 (all minutes).

Same story for Ings. Ings and Jimenez provides equally value for price without taking minutes played into concideration. Ings played 2812 minutes and JImenez played 3244 last season, which means that Ings have higher potential if he plays more minutes this season.

Can someone share some stats on Soucek which make him seem like a great pick?
Everytime I read about him he seems like a defensive midfielder who scores the odd goal.
Are people expecting more than 5-6 goals a season from him?

15 goals in 39 (!!!) games last season all comps including CL.

3 in 13 for W Ham since he signed.

Season before that (18/19) he scored 18 goals in 49 apps all comps. Also 9 assists.

This total point range approximations seem in the right ball park?

        VVD = 190-210
        Doherty = 160-180
        Tierney = 120-140
        Taylor = 90-110
        Ziyech = 190-210
        Klich = 100-120

          A) VVD, Doherty & Klich = 450-510
          B) Tierney, Taylor & Ziyech = 400-460

I’m probably being overly generous but Doherty could push 200. Tierney I reckon maybe 160, I think Arsenal will be good at the back

It’s interesting how many players are being massively ignored in our drafts, all of which could be relevant.
        Vardy
        Blades defenders
        Grealish
        Son (for the most part)
        Martial/Rash
        AWB/Maguire
        Leicester defence
        Traore

Grealish seems to be really flying under the radar, given good fixtures he is pretty much guaranteed in my team.

What’s his upside? 149 points last season playing every minute of every match. For 7.0 that’s not a good return. Get the 6.0+ defenders or premiums instead

That’s my general strat, defenders. But still if Grealish has decent fixtures I would get him just for those then switch back to a premium defender. He would out score a defender in like 6 weeks of green imo.
If Vardy has form like he did at the start of last season he will be extremely relevant

We're not picking a team for the whole season.
I'm sure there must be a run of 4-5 games where he would have 40 points and Doherty would just have 20?

Son and Rashford are the two for me out of those.

Martial seems quite popular, but I think he'll struggle to match the other united boys for value as a FWD.

Rest for me are wait and sees - not considering any of them for GW1

For Martial it depends if he keeps hoovering up BPS and keeps up his home form since restart.

Most of these are knock-ons from either poor post-restart form or overpricing... or, in Martial's case, re-classification diddles.

Sheff U defence is possibly the exception. Think Egan at 5 could be really good value, but depends on fixs.

Mount is the big differential imo.

He played the most of any outfield Chelsea player (except Azpi). If they don't sign Havertz, he will surely start. Lampard favorite.

I dunno. He played the most outfield minutes of any player bar Azpi. That is quite a telling stat on how Lampard rates him. I can't see him playing less. He just might be playing deeper.

Vardy - Leicester seemed a bit off after lockdown but I’ll be ready to bring him in if he shows signs of last season’s form.

Blades Def - I feel like they owed quite a bit to Henderson and are not as kindly priced.

Grealish - There are better options at that price point.

Son - Somehow cheaper than last season despite his great returns. Straight in my team.

Martial/Rash - Hard to look past Bruno imo.

AWB/Maguire - I cant bring myself to go near Man U defence. Too many bad memories.

Leicester Def - They just don’t seem good at the moment but will monitor.

Traore - Jimenez and Doherty are the picks imo.

Those two are underpriced AND premium.

There’s a real gap this year in the 7.0-8.0 striker range this year.

I don't consider Soucek a sub though. He's a solid playing mid. If he cost 6.0 I would seriously consider him with his underlying stats and play him every week.

If you go Soucek you need an alternative to him or a rotation. ie, rotate with a defender or rotate with Armstrong or ASM.
Solely relying on Soucek will suck if he flops, prefer some kind of safety net.

Several players here that are overpriced unfortunately.

Way too much spent on keepers

Soyuncu and Baldock are not worth the price

Get Soucek over Noble as well

Noble is on penalties as far as I know.

Lose soy and Noble. Soucek is worth the punt, he will be highly owned. Rotate him with ASM

Soy I’m not sure about, get Vinagre and rotate him with Ayling.
                  Something like that.

Just logging it again here to compare it with my actual GW 1 team.

Quick warning, Camzy: this method didn't quite work out last season. My less owned 4.0m GK dropped faster than the more highly owned Button (who I didn't need because I knew I'd never buy Ryan)

Maybe it doesn't apply to striker duds, but note that you'll have to aware of impending price drops and spend one of your 2 FTs (when you don't need them) there someday. Could be the lower owned who drops first, or the one with more owners. Just keep it in mind

Or you know... it barely matters. I'm not gonna spend a transfer to replace a 4.0 non-playing keeper. Just lose the value. It's whatever.

I'd rather lose the value as well. Just thought to point that out as it was my thinking behind getting a 4.0 with lower ownership but I saw it didn't work that way

From what I remember it's percentage based. So a low owned player takes fewer transfers out to drop than a highly owned one. Don't think it matters though, because it's proportional to owners.

I'd rather just get the one most likely to play.

Funny, I keep arriving at the same team... then I tell myself that for £7m Robertson is essential.

So I downgrade one of the midfielders to get him in. Usually Ziyech.

          So my debate is:

          1) Ziyech and Ayling
          2) ASM/Soucek and Robertson

          And that’s a tough one!

I prefer 1 purely because I want money at the start of the season to jump on bandwagons in midfield and attack. When I WC (early preferably), likely I will have double Liverpool defenders and then a bunch of the best value players.

I think this is a great strategy. Bearing that in mind, how does this look?

Big hitting starting mid, ready to jump on the cheaper bandwagons when they appear!

              McCarthy
              TAA Vinagre Saliba Taylor
              KBD Salah Auba Greenwood

Arguably the most flexible front 8 looks something like:

                Salah KdB Fernandes Greenwood Soucek
                Mitro Werner Vassilev

Salah can become Auba, Mane, Sterling
Fernandes can become Rashford, Son, Ziyech, Pulisic
Greenwood can become Grealish, Foden, Ziyech, Mount
Soucek can become Harrison, Armstong, ASM
Werner can become Martial, Jesus, Ings, Jimenez
Mitro can become Adams, Kean, Antonio, Wood

Price point wise it is very flexible. Gives you in two moves very natural switches including some straight swap possibilities.

                I consider KdB untouchable.

I just marginally prefer Ziyech and Antonio over Werner and Soucek. Still, two moves to switch those.

8.5 for Jimi and Ings are food prices imo. Both essentially 200 points this season. For 0.5 can easily upgrade to Martial, or can downgrade them to Wood, Mitro and Antonio.
Lots of room to manoeuvre there over the course of the season.
I’m going 3 up front for that reason. There’s always going to be 3 from those 6 with decent fixtures.
I’ll probably keep 0.5 in the bank to allow the Martial upgrade

I already have Vinagre and he's going nowhere even with fixtures (except if extremely horrific), but this article has made me rethink my decision to stay away from Man U defenders in GW1. Just gotta get over the idea of DDG's howlers and admit that there'll always be howlers, but howlers are memorable because I was expecting a clean sheet... Meaning over a long period, there'll be more clean sheets than howlers: see their 9 clean sheets in 14 GWs (not easy games either) with Bruno being up there with Wolves and City (remember Ederson and Mendy's howlers?), only followed by the fixture-dependent Burnley with 7

Sell Nyland, Ziyech and Jesus, then you're getting close

Anyone else having second thoughts about Salah in their team?

My issue is that if I pay that much for him I pretty much need to cap him every week. But he is not a BAPs magnet, which is so infuriating when he has the armband, scores and doesn’t pick up BAPs.

Dumping Salah could give me Bruno and Ziyech/Son as well as KdB, who’d be perma cap.

Am I just getting Salah due to FOMO cos everyone else has him? Clearly other mids are going to score similar points to him if they stay healthy?

                        Interesting thoughts to ponder.

KDB and Bruno have many more routes to points than Salah so they are must-own in my humble opinion. For Salah, it's just a question of how much Milner plays and whether he will take the full responsibility of pens.

Thinking of going Raz over Salah and double up with KDB and Pool double defence.

He's a beast at Anfield, making him a great captain pick for the home games

Yes, but there are so many juicy options....KdB isn’t venue dependent either.

So that's GW2, what's your draft for GW1 when United and City probably won't be playing?

To change things up a bit, what would you guys say are your biggest weaknesses?

I have one or two key things that need to change

                          1) way too emotional after a gw, need to learn to just take a bad week on the chin and not rip up my plans. I'm not a kneejerker chasing last week's points, it's more I get angry at a player and convince myself to get rid no matter what

                          2) not getting in good players because they might get injured (Ings) or rotated (Sterling) again need to take that on the chin if it happens but the majority of times they'll play

Sometimes being a bit *too* different, especially at the start of the season.

I actually nail the start of the season, but only gw1 so a lesson for me is to be more balanced with a 3-4 week view rather than just 1 stellar starting week then downhill

I'm from the Kevin Keegan school of management and have been known to wrap early in campaigns. I've also managed to convert top 1k finishes into sub 20k and 40k rankings thanks to terrible DGW strategy's which may have seen me lose a 100 point lead in my mini league once upon a time {Thanks Harry Kane}, in short I'm a bit of a bottler.

Made some slight tweaks to my team. I can’t find a way to get Salah in without destroying it which is bugging me. Any ideas? I feel like maybe the combo I have outscores him or at least matches?

There will be major tweaks to your team when the fixture list arrive. Pointless

It's not pointless, every draft helps towards overall thinking when the fixtures arrive.

I fear that’s the case but I’m feeling that KDB, Bruno and Werner are staying no matter what so it takes some real surgery to get Salah in.

                                  What do you think to
                                  Doherty > 4.5
                                  Son > Salah
                                  Soucek > 4.5
                                  Antonio > Bamford
