Pre-Season

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2020/21

The case for high-end premium goalkeepers is perhaps at the weakest it has been for years.

£6.0m shot-stoppers have historically provided some level of consistency in their returns but a sub-par year for the men between the sticks at Liverpool and Manchester City in 2019/20 has Fantasy Premier League managers looking at cheaper options all the more.

However, a selection of £5.5m assets may catch the eye if they start the campaign well, while some of the £5.0m goalkeepers have potential too.

Considering the limited selection of promising £4.5m goalkeepers, could Fantasy managers find value in this mid-price bracket in 2020/21?

We’ve run the rule over the 18 goalkeepers who cost £5.0m or more this season.

The title-challengers

Alisson (£6.0m) and Ederson (£6.0m) come into 2020/21 as the only £6.0m options in the goalkeeper bracket – but it is difficult to see what use they will be across the whole campaign.

Even though they play for the Premier League’s top two clubs, eight different goalkeepers racked up more points in 2019/20 than Ederson, while 10 managed more than Alisson.

Admittedly, the Brazilian did miss nine matches through injury, but his score of 122 averaged at just 4.2 points per game. While that could be seen as a steady stream of points by some, few would argue that it is worth paying £6.0m for.

Ederson’s value was even worse, offering just 3.8 points per game for his premium price point.

2019/20 was a worse than usual campaign for both Manchester City and Liverpool defensive credentials. The two clubs have previously displayed the ability to get 20 clean sheets or more in a season but in 2019/20, they managed 17 and 15 respectively.

Meanwhile, a suspension for Ederson and Alisson’s injury meant neither one could capitalise on their team’s full complement of shut-outs, getting points for 16 and 13 each.

And, of course, the main drawback of forking out for a premium goalkeeper is the lack of bonus and save points.

Alisson (11) and Ederson (two) combined for just 13 bonus points last season; the six shot-stoppers who managed more than that amalgamated total all coming into 2020/21 at a cheaper price.

Meanwhile, the top clubs’ domination of possession meant that 14 goalkeepers registered more saves than Ederson (68), while Alisson was only forced into 58.

Pope and the top-half options

By contrast, Nick Pope (£5.5m) is sure to offer significant value, it’s just whether or not you’re willing to pay £5.5m for a man who misses Gameweek 1.

No goalkeeper scored more than his 170 points last season, comprised of 15 clean sheets and, unlike those £6.0m options, the third-highest save tally in the division (120) and the highest bonus total among shot-stoppers too (23, seven more than second place).

It is not a huge leap to say that nobody in the £5.5m bracket can match Pope’s level of points potential for the new campaign based on what we saw in 2019/20.

Rui Patrício (£5.5m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m), David de Gea (£5.5m) and Dean Henderson (£5.5m) all kept 13 clean sheets, two fewer than Pope, but each one was at least 22 behind on saves with none of these teams likely to give up as many shots as Burnley.

And while Pope registered 23 bonus points, Patrício, De Gea and Schmeichel all mustered 10 or fewer.

Only one of De Gea or Henderson is likely to be a regular starter this season in light of the latter appearing to commit to playing at Old Trafford this season. Alternatively, the battle for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one spot may not be as clear cut and could see regular switches between the two.

In favour of Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Patrício is the fact that both clubs have been handed two of the most appealing fixture schedules at the start of 2020/21.

However, there are cheaper options at both clubs in the defensive areas, with Ben Davies (£5.0m) and Eric Dier (£5.0m) among those considered at Spurs, while Romain Saïss (£5.0m) and Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) can undercut Patrício.

Furthermore, even though Lloris actually bettered Pope for minutes per save last season (22.3 to 28.5), he kept a clean sheet in just 28% of his appearances, compared to 39.4% for the Burnley man.

BIG SIX VALUE OPTIONS

Fantasy managers will be watching the Community Shield with great interest this season, as they hope to discover which of Arsenal’s two goalkeepers will be the number one choice for 2020/21.

Despite missing most of the Premier League restart in June and July, Bernd Leno (£5.0m) still finished last season inside the top five for saves with a total of 113.

That helped the German finish 2019/20 with an overall score of 114, an average of 3.8 per game. The question is whether or not he will be fit enough for the new campaign, having previously been the first choice.

With Arsenal having steadily improved defensively under Mikel Arteta and during Project Restart, whichever goalkeeper starts the campaign is likely to offer value but, without wanting to wish misfortune on anyone, the Fantasy community is surely rooting for Martínez.

While the Spaniard is £0.5m cheaper he conceded fewer goals per game and boasted a better figure for saves per 90 minutes than Leno last season.

It is no secret that Chelsea are in the market for a new goalkeeper, which is surely enough to ward anyone off considering Willy Caballero (£5.0m) or Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.0m) at this stage of the campaign.

Ironically enough, if Frank Lampard was able to bring Pope to Chelsea it might damage his points potential as so much of his appeal stems from the number of shots Burnley typically concede (more than the Blues).

If Lampard looks outside the Premier League for his new shot-stopper, it will be interesting to see how they will be priced. Based on their underlying statistics, Chelsea are a team that can keep clean sheets if their problems between the sticks are solved.

Kepa kept just eight clean sheets last season, shutting out opponents in just 24% of his appearances, adding just 55 saves.

If Chelsea do get to the end of the transfer window with no recruitment in goal, and they have shown some improvement, then £5.0m is a price well worth paying, there are just too many factors to warrant investing right now.

MID-TABLE MAYBES

Can Aaron Ramsdale prosper in FPL and will he affect the Sheffield United defence?

There does appear to be more interest in the £5.0m bracket at the mid-table than in previous years.

Each of these options are more nailed-on starters for Gameweek 1 than Leno or Kepa, and some of them are certainly in a position to outperform them for saves.

Fresh from relegation with Bournemouth, Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) has joined Sheffield United, a team that kept 13 clean sheets during their first season back in the Premier League.

128 saves for the Cherries last time out suggests there is the possibility Ramsdale could combine his increased clean sheet potential with a penchant for additionals and offer value in 2020/21. We did a full Scout Report on the player HERE.

No goalkeeper made more saves than Martin Dúbravka (£5.0m) last season, managing a total of 139. That contributed to an overall season score of 143 points, propped by a solid total of 11 clean sheets.

Only five goalkeepers registered more points than Dúbravka in 2019/20, all of them coming into the new campaign priced at £5.5m. If this season’s shot-stopping charts were to reflect last, that would make the Newcastle man a value option indeed. In fact, last time out, only Pope, Ryan and Henderson finished with a better value (season) score than Dúbravka (28.6).

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) struggled to live up to the promise of his previous two campaigns in 2019/20, scoring just 117 points, a drop-off of 44 compared to 2018/19.

While Everton’s defensive issues are perhaps not over just yet, any slight improvement could see £5.0m prove a cut-price cost for Fantasy managers, especially if they could go close to the 14 clean sheets recorded the season before last.

Despite injury curtailing the first half of 2019/20, Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) remains in the £5.0m category, perhaps ruling him out for now.

Crystal Palace will have to improve defensively if Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) is to become a viable goalkeeper in 2020/21. During Project Restart, no team that survived relegation conceded more goals than the Eagles.

THE NO-GOES

The £5.0m bracket ends with some of the most avoidable assets in all of Fantasy Premier League.

Looking likely to be third in the Manchester United pecking order now, Sergio Romero (£5.0m) is certainly overpriced based on realistic estimates of his score this season. The Argentinian has not amassed more than 23 points in a single Premier League campaign since arriving in 2015/16.

Meanwhile, without a single Premier League minute for Newcastle since 2017/18, Karl Darlow (£5.0m) has somehow gained a £5.0m price-tag despite ending 2019/20 at £4.3m.

I keep returning to treble Pool defence.

Can focus captaincy on TAA, Bruno, KDB, Sterling, Auba

        All I know is that I don't know 😆

I think I need a strategy and then stick to it, whatever that is, I think that's the key.

Forget mid price cheap attacking assets (Mitro aside)

        Yes,

        McCarthy
        TAA - VVD - Robertson - Doherty - Vinagre/KWP
        Son (+1.5) - Auba
        Werner - Ings - Mitro

        Steer - 4.5 x 3 full playing bench

        GW1: (C) TAA
        GW2: Son to Bruno (C)
        GW3: Auba to KDB/Sterling (C)

That's my back line (with Vinny - I'll get Fergie if he's down). Seems madness spending 31.5m on defence and millions will agree, but it makes perfect sense to me.

The thing is the Liverpool defence was actually rubbish last season 🙂 aside from that incredible middle patch and yet they're still incredible set and forget options.

Strategy is to set them in place forget about and focus transfers on the midfield two for captaincy

this is my exact thinking, but i keep getting put off by what i read on here, and some doubts myself about not having Salah, but it allows me to focus on the premium attackers swapping strategy and a much more set and forget option for the whole defence (which is good for me as i always take too many hits) - not having salah allows me to pick between the other premium attackers that i wouldn't be able to choose otherwise, if i do it i need to just stick to it

I also want to spend much less time thinking about my team this season so set and forget options are the way for me

                Exactly my thoughts as yourself.

The way I see it, three premium mids will be too much. Why not get the unprecedented Pool defenders and then focus on Bruno, Auba, KDB and Sterling in the two slots

precisely, and it still allows me to have kane and werner up top who i can use as cash cows to bolster the mids, auba to kdb/bruno/sterling gw3, already squeezed in greenwood in current draft, with kane/werner/mitro as fwds

                  mccarthy
                  taa/vvd/robbo/doherty/vinagre
                  auba/asm
                  kane/werner/mitro

                  nyland/greenwood/4.5/4.5

much tweaking and thinking to do, but i might just go with something like that, good luck 🙂

What is your core underlying strategy to start the season?

I'm seeing a lot of people saying teams are 'template' when I'm actually seeing quite a lot of variety. 3 premium defenders has been called template. TAA + 4x 4.5s has been called template. 3 upfront template, 2 upfront template.

I don't see a prevailing strategy yet. There are good drafts that bench a MUN player and good drafts that don't. There are a lot of ideas. What I'm interested in is the underlying strategy at this point when starting XIs are still evolving around signings. That will dictate what draft you go with.

Right now, here are some core tenets that I'm working with. Again, the focus is on underlying strategy not personnel.

    1. Double Wolves defense. Wolves had the best xGC in the league post lockdown. They have the best fixtures for defending for the first 7/8 gameweeks. It makes total sense to get a Wolves defensive double and bench one for the City game.

    2. MUN on the bench GW1. I think having at least one MUN attacker on the bench is a good idea to start the season. Having enforced transfers is a very bad thing to start the season with uncertainty around lineups and who the form players are. Fernandes especially could offer a nice captaincy option in GW2 that many will not have planned well enough to have and will instead be reliant on Aubameyang.

    3. Spurs should be invested in. There's no getting around it, Spurs have the best all-around fixtures of the top 6 teams to start the season. They've also benefitted from having a longer pre-season (as have Liverpool) among the top 6. I don't see why Kane isn't in more drafts. The more I build, the more I realize I have prejudices and preconceived ideas that may be clouding my judgment about Spurs and Kane. Fact of the matter is, since lockdown, he scored 7 goals in 9 games. 5 in the last 3 with underlying stats to boot. Son is also a player with very strong FPL pedigree and very high PPG. Certainly worthy of inclusion.

    4. Chelsea have huge potential. Those opening fixtures are very nice for Chelsea attacking wise. First 5, they have one of the best fixture runs for attacking and last season, they were 2nd in xG since restart. I think it's therefore silly to not have at least one Chelsea player to start. Werner is popular, but Ziyech, Pulisic and even Mount could be good. A double up on Chelsea could also be on the cards starting in GW3 once we see what lineup Lampard favors.

Before the prices came out I knew I wanted to go big in midfield. My plan was to get Trent + four 4.5’s (I have a 5.0 and 4.0 now) and get two budget strikers. Spend the rest of my money on 5 midfielders.

Don't the fixtures just change everything though? They have for me. I went from completely writing off Spurs to seriously considering having a bunch of them. That necessitates a big change in formation too.

Not at all. I still have the majority of the players I had before the fixtures came out. I could go with any Spurs midfielder, but decided against it. But I have gone with a Spurs defender and a 4.0 instead of four 4.5’s.

We can't have everyone imo. Auba has two good fixtures and is just too good ignore imo. C Salah for gw1 or there is serious risk falling far behind after first gw. After those two, TAA and Doherty and Bruno on bench and affording usually slow starting Kane and/or Son with Werner isn't doable.

I think it might be smart to begin with Kane. He has the fixtures, he has the form, he has a full pre-season (well... starting late because of quarantine). We'll have Nations League games to watch too I guess. There is a ton of upside as well considering he is still only 15% owned.

          I like your thought process.

Kane's decent, would never criticise anyone for going with him (started well v AVL, Mourinho second season etc.)

But is he trustworthy with the armband and even if he has a stellar 30 goal season, he'll struggle to get 200 points.

Money's tight, but I'm not backing Harry.

I think this is how you get married to winning strategies from past seasons that may not apply this season. We all fall victim to it.

Last year, so many people had Bournemouth double-ups. Fraser-Wilson. Wilson-King etc. It was a disaster.

Based on last season's data, those two fixtures are perfectly good. Everton were pretty mediocre all season and Southampton had a dreadful home record. They also have the benefit of a really nice NEW in GW3 when most teams have only two good fixtures out of the first 3.

Isnt' it an unspoken rule in FPL to NOT have a player coming in who has NEVER played premier league until you have at least seen them for 8/10 weeks (It took a while for Pulisic to adjust) and yet some people are going for two in the same team from the start with no PL experience - however good they are do I need to quote Henry i.e. who took months to get flying....

He actually didn't do well. He started the first game and got nothing, dropped for the second game. Only in the 3rd game did he start and become an option IIRC.

For me spurs are a good team to invest defensively. Kane May look attractive but he is more expensive than both vardy and Werner both could easily outdo Kane. Kane is not known for his starts around this time of year and even though he started post lockdown good doesn’t mean that will continue. Mourinho is very defensive minded if spurs get a goal or two he likes to set up shop makes it hard for Kane or son to ever go ‘big’. I agree with you about templates. People who keep saying template don’t understand that statistically even a single differential player can have a big impact on your team week after week. I also find it funny that people are worried about Liverpool’s fixtures first three. Leeds will get done 4-0 they are used to possession they won’t get that against Liverpool. Liverpool recently put 5 on Chelsea when they had nothing to play for whilst Chelsea were going for champs league and then arsenal who Liverpool have an excellent record against last decade

Agree on Liverpool. They will score loads in those first 3. But I don't think it's good for their defense. Double defense I will definitely avoid to start this season.

Good post. Lots of different ways to skin a cat in this game and most feedback on RMTs will be based on personal preference.

Will be getting as many Wolves defenders as I can. At least 2. If Vinagre keeps his place it'll probably be 3.

Salah is a mainstay - likely captain in 4 or 5 out of the first 7.

Son's price is a joke IMO, if he's fit I can't see not having him GW1 and keeping him.

I was originally benching a united player because I liked the balance of my team more than starting with Auba and shifting him later on but I'm cooling on that now. Can decide what to do with Auba GW3 and can go anywhere with (hopefully) 2FT.

The one thing I do disagree with is your line around 'many have not planned well enough to have (Bruno) and will instead be reliant on Aubameyang' - I think Aubameyang is at least as good if not better captain option than Bruno in GW2, but again, personal preference right!

I will only pick players that I believe are long term value, and for the most part make transfers when I have two frees. I will not make short term punts that I wouldn't be ok with having in my team even for a relatively bad fixture or two. Antonio is a good example of this, I don't mind having him for seemingly mediocre fixtures at the start because he is good value price wise.

This has lead me to going relatively heavy on defense with double Liverpool, Doherty and a spurs defender.

I will never pick players that could be dropped on the back of a very small number of blanks. This is why I have mitrovic over someone like che Adams. I also don't like Chelsea players for the start as we don't know who is nailed and how they will line up. I can easily get them in with a few transfers down the line, but from the start Id rather go with proven players.

Great post. I agree with most of your points, with some caveats.

      1. Yes, I currently have both Doherty and Vinagre in my draft and really like it. However, if Wolves sign a new LB I will probably go for another 4.5 elsewhere

      2. Agree, but Bruno is just too much value left on the bench imo and I plan to hold Greenwood on the bench GW1 provided Man U don't sign Sancho or another attacker

      3. This one isn't so black and white in my opinion. They have great fixtures but also have a LOT of fixture congestion which will mean minutes managed/rotation even for the usual ever-presents like Kane. The amount of games they have coming up (plus internationals) mean it's impossible to play every game. Plus Mourinho still limits their attacking potential in my eyes. Kane is an option but not one I'm going for as I prefer both Vardy and Werner for their prices. Defence could be worth it but I will wait and see. I have had Son in some drafts, currently he's made way for Ziyech and 1m elsewhere.

      4. Agree. I have Vardy (slightly overlooked imo) and Ziyech atm with the idea that Vardy to Werner is easy if he fires early doors.

I keep coming back to this draft- what are main flaws with it?

    Martial ready for week 2
Aubameyang or Salah easy switch to KDB week 3 if want to and also ASM to 6.5- possibly Foden.
Can downgrade Werner if need more cash midfield

    McCarthy
    Doherty TAA Vinagre
    Salah Aubameyang Armstrong ASM Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic

    Nyland Ayling Ferguson Martial

Looks decent but could unravel if Wolves buy a left back in the next few weeks (although simple swap for KWP) or if Chelsea's two new boys (with no prem experience) do not hit the ground running.

One you might get away with but two (with second fixture against Liverpool) is asking a lot IMO.

Just seen that he's 5.0 which isn't a bad shout actually considering our opening 2 fixtures. Long term though, Bellerin has lacked consistency since his injury and just doesn't provide the attacking threat he used to. Hopefully he'll be back to his best season but if he's as bad as he was at points last season he'll be sharing minutes with Cedric.

I like the idea of one 5m defenders (Bavies or Bellerin) but both feels a touch risky. Holding out for someone to do a big piece on the Arsenal defence. Bellerin has the best upside of anyone below 5.5 for sure.

      Really depends where Willian plays.

front 2 could be Willian Auba Pepe
Arteta could also play Willian at 10,

      Saka Auba Pepe
      Willian

Community shield should be a good indicator.

We are about to sign Gabriel for 30m, who is arguably further along in his development and, crucially, is left-footed. Assuming Arteta is going back to 4atb, Gabriel and Saliba would be the long-term partnership but it would be suicidal to start the season with both of them. Luiz will partner to start with Gabriel imo.

It's possible we stick with 3atb and they both start either side of Luiz but even in that case Saliba will be a big rotation risk.

My underlying strategy: with the Manc situation, plan ahead but keep it flexible.

    1. Defence - 4 from Liverpool and Wolves, in for the long haul.
    2. Mid/Fwd - put premium placeholders in for GW1 but be flexible as to when they go and who to replace them with. Keep cash in hand to allow for flexibilty and price rises.
    3. Start with one Manc on the bench so that in theory you can have 3 by GW3.

    4. Be open to having no more than one City for first 10 GWs.
Have 2 Spurs premiums as placeholders but be open to keeping them due to fixtures.
Monitor Chelsea, being open to bring one or two in after 3 or 4 GWs.

    5. Don't take any hits, use chips or waste a wildcard ahead of closing of transfer window. This means accepting I probably won't win my weekly ML in the first 4 weeks and will be nowhere with OR, but I'll be in a stronger position that those who have shot their loads too quickly.

Solid core tenets. I like it.

I don't agree with 1 but I respect the choice. Too much money at the back too early imo.

4 is the most interesting. It looks reasonable to go with 0 City until GW10. But it's really hard to stand by it if they suddenly put 5 past a team.

    4. Klaren
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 7 months ago

The flaw with 5 is that you are assuming things will change with the transfer window and other factors that will give you an advantagous position by playing your WC late. However there is uncertainty with that and you could end up having a disadvantage in the first few weeks and no clear advantage from a WC later on.

So I prefer to WC early when there is a tangible advantage rather than saving to deal with potential future uncertainty which might or might not impact my team.

There is ALWAYS an advantage to WCing later than others. More information. If you can hold it to GW16 for example, may even know about the blank and doubles in GW18/19.

I plan to WC around GW9 myself, but that's loose and I may need it sooner (hopefully not) or not need it and can save longer. It's always better to hold off if you can, by picking decent long term players.

Seen loads of Mitro in peoples drafts. They cant have watched the Champ play-off final where he choke slammed a Brentford defender 2 minutes after coming on - the man is a walking red card!

Better to take lowest owned 4.5 forward fodder right?

Remember last season i lose 0.1 or 0.2 on Greenwood

Yep. Unless Brewster looks likely to start, aim for lowest owned 4.5 attacker (assuming he'll be 3rd on your bench)

    McCarthy
    Trent, Vinagre, Walker-Peters, Justin
    Salah, Auba, Son, Saint-Maxiim
    Kane, Mitro

    Ryan, Soucek, Ferguson, David.

    1.5ITB

Plan from there would be Son -> Bruno GW2 and then likely to go Auba -> KDB GW3, but who knows by then with injuries, COVID, form etc.

Any first thoughts or stand out errors?

Really looking forward to getting a good look at the Arsenal defence. Any good articles or HTs on them?

Bellerin is a really naughty pick potentially, granted it's a risk but if he nailed that spot he's a bargain.

The biggest incentive is their gk which may well be Martinez 4.5. If he looks like starting, I can see a few shifting him in.

No interest in Bellerin at all.

His fixtures apart from the first two are poor. He's not nailed on, you can get a 4.5m Arsenal defender by waiting to see who starts Community Shield.

And even worse, there are better options at 5.0m. I'd rather get Dier or Davies with their fixtures, Coady or Saiss too with fixtures.

My present thought is to get Davies and take a raincheck on Bellerin until we see how things pan out. I agree that the Shield will really help for Saliba potentially.

Arsenal last season tended to overload down the left so IMO if you're looking at an Arsenal defender then find the extra 0.5 for Tierney.

That said, bar the first 2x games fixtures are awful so I would avoid for now and assess after the schedule softens.

A lot of love for Doherty here. After lockdown he was a beast granted, with attacking returns coinciding with Wolves shutting up shop and having the best defensive record.

Before lockdown? A long long list of 1 and 2's.

Can he, and Wolves, be more consistent this year?

Can't see them declining. No EL, same coach, same squad of players.

Good points. Remember being gutted not being able to pick them last summer for fear of EL. Turns out Jiminez was immense anyhow

Now they're free. They may be a bit jaded after such a long 13 months, but long term? They could be the team that cracks the top 4-6

Boly's absence helped explain a lot of the 1s and 2s early part of last season

Boly is in the bracket of Alisson and Laporte for influence

Doherty’s 2 out of 3 attacking returns were due to excellent finishing by Neto and Jimenez and he wasn’t going forward as much as he did in the last several games pre-restart. So in addition Wolves’ consistency, Doherty’s role in the team will play a key role as well.

Agreed on Boly influence, though strangely he is probably the worst pick (bar Coady). If it wasn't for Vinagre Doherty would be in a good 85-90% of teams here. I'm interested to see how attacking they are early doors - they were getting towards a boring 1-0 status team for a while post-restart.

I owned him for the majority of last season, lost count of the amount of times he was very close to scoring, they struggled to keep cleansheets with Boly out but he still had ridiculous attacking threat almost every game and was unlucky not to score more.

    Think I’ve nailed it

    McCarthy (4.0)
TAA, Doherty, Vinagre, Justin(or other 4.5), Ferguson
Auba(c), Salah, ASM, (4.5 & Greenwood on bench)
    Werner, Jiminez (4.5)

1mio itb which could be used for either of
    a) ASM -> Foden if he appears nailed
    b) Werner -> Aguero if he looks like he is starting
    c) Justin -> AWB

Auba to either KDB or Bruno In GW3 based who looks more dangerous

    A or B?

    A

    Auba Salah Greenwood Soucek
    Kane Werner

    B
    McCarthy
    TAA Davies Doherty
    Auba Salah Greenwood Soucek
    Ings Werner Mitrovic

Basically Egan, Taylor, Kane or Doherty, Ings, Mitrovic
