Aubameyang outperforms Salah in early audition for Gameweek 1 FPL captaincy

Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

Arsenal won on penalties

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) | Takumi Minamino (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Bukayo Saka (£5.5m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) furthered his case for a Blank Gameweek 1 captaincy as he starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield final win.

The recently converted Fantasy Premier League midfielder scored an excellent first-half goal as his movement and pace caused all sorts of problems for Liverpool in the opening period at Wembley.

Stationed on the left-hand side of the front-three in Mikel Arteta’s 3-4-3 formation, Aubameyang exploited the space behind right-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) in the 12th minute to get his goal. With the defender standing off him too much, he was able to cut inside on his right foot and curl an effort behind Alisson (£6.0m).

“Big games, big moments, big players. (Aubameyang) responded really well to that kind of pressure. We are close (to a new contract for him).” – Mikel Arteta

The £12.0m man faces Fulham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and Saturday’s performance is sure to only further increase the interest in handing him the FPL captain’s armband.

Such a decision could arguably be made easier by what Fantasy managers saw of Liverpool attackers in the Community Shield final.

With Leeds coming to Anfield in Gameweek 1, Jurgen Klopp’s men had also been the subject of armband attention, especially Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) – but he was certainly not at the races at Wembley Stadium.

The Egyptian put in a rather anonymous display, certainly a far cry from the shot-heavy shifts we saw at the back-end of Project Restart.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£12.0m) spurned one of Liverpool’s best chances of the game, a poor touch giving him the wrong angle to beat Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) from close range.

What makes Arsenal’s performance more encouraging, and Liverpool’s less so, is the disparity between the two clubs when it came to preparation.

It was the Gunners who came into the Community Shield final with less pre-season game-time under their belt, with some players managing just one training session before the game. Despite that fact, they shot out of the traps and, for the majority of the first hour, were the most alert in both boxes.

By contrast, Liverpool have already played two pre-season matches but took until the introduction of Takumi Minamino (£6.5m) to offer any real insight going forward.

“David (Luiz) had only trained one day just before the final. He was able to play 90 minutes. Thank you to the players.” – Mikel Arteta

A key factor in Liverpool’s struggles at Wembley was the increasingly organised shape and discipline on offer at Arteta’s Arsenal.

Although Minamino did find a way through in the second half, for the most part, the Gunners’ back-three did an excellent job of containing Liverpool and dealing with Andrew Robertson‘s (£7.0m) relentless crossing.

Staffed by Kieran Tierney (£5.5m), David Luiz (£5.5m) and Rob Holding (£4.5m), the Arsenal backline did an excellent job of crowding out Salah and Mané, beating them to virtually every ball. That certainly bodes well for their defensive prospects in 2020/21, especially with Fulham and West Ham up first.

“A lot of teams play in this formation and in the final third you want to be fresh. You want to force it sometimes. We didn’t have our rhythm so we couldn’t create the chances we wanted.” – Jurgen Klopp

“(I was pleased with) the courage of the team. How aggressive we were without the ball, how well we made the decisions to break the pressure of Liverpool and cause them some issues in the backline.” – Mikel Arteta

However, there is still some uncertainty on how exactly to cover Arsenal’s defence this season with none of the £4.5m options particularly nailed-on just yet.

Holding was a key man against Liverpool but William Saliba (£4.5m), a player from whom much is expected, was on the bench at Wembley.

As for the goalkeeper situation, Arteta stopped short of declaring Martínez the first-choice during his pre-match media commitments.

The Spaniard missed Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly due to quarantine from recent travelling, which is why Bernd Leno (£5.0m) and Matt Macey shared minutes at Stadium MK.

However, Arteta seemed to suggest that the main reason Martínez came straight back into the side was that he helped Arsenal qualify for the Community Shield in the first place, having played in the FA Cup final earlier in the summer. Fantasy managers will have to hope one more pre-season friendly can be squeezed in between now and Blank Gameweek 1 to give us more information on the subject.

“I have two fantastic keepers. I think Emi (Martínez) finished the season really strong. He was our goalkeeper in the FA Cup and he deserves to play this final.” – Mikel Arteta

The stock of Liverpool defenders appears to be travelling in the opposite direction. As already mentioned, in the first half especially, Arsenal looked much more dangerous when pressing forward, exploiting space behind the Reds’ backline.

It was not far from a first-choice defence either, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) missing from the usual suspects, but Liverpool still gave up plenty of chances early on.

Williams offered Aubameyang too much room in the first half, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) gave the ball away a little too often and even Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) struggled to keep up with some of the mistakes going on around him.

While this Liverpool defence has not become porous overnight, there are still enough troubling signs that Fantasy managers may think twice about investing in a double-up, especially with Alexander-Arnold left out of the Community Shield as a fitness precaution (although he is due to report for England duty on Monday).

Those on the lookout for cheaper attacking options in the Arsenal ranks will have seen more to like about Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) than Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m). The versatile midfielder was a key man for getting Arsenal moving in their counter-attacks during the first half, playing an excellent cross-field assist for Aubameyang’s goal and twice setting up Nketiah.

The former Leeds loanee has been exploiting the absence of Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) this week starting both of Arsenal’s pre-season games so far. With the Frenchman heavily rumoured with an exit, there is a chance that Nketiah could lock in the centre-forward’s role but his performance on Saturday was not quite at the level that will entice Fantasy managers.

Nketiah’s approach play was nice and he was certainly willing to receive the ball but the chances that came his way were not executed well enough.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Tierney (Kolasinac 83′), Holding, D Luiz; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Elneny, Bellerín (Cédric 58′); Aubameyang, Nketiah (Nelson 82′), Saka (Willock 82′).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, N Williams (Minamino 59′); Wijnaldum (Brewster 90+2′), Milner (Keïta 59′), Fabinho; Mané, Firmino (C Jones 83′), Salah.

Greenwood is very dependent upon the transfer though. Let's say if United don't sign a RW by h

Yep, green is great if no rw signings. Bruno the man, but rash plus 1m can upgrade ings to martial or Werner. Think Bruno has to be scarificed for the benefit of the team, either for rash of green.

Anyone else a bit undecided on Chelsea players?? I just think they have a lot of new good quality players but they're not going to have a proper pre season this year to gel????? Keep wondering whether or not to have Werner in from the start or see how he does first few games??

I agree, they really did not look that impressive today.

I think I might just go without at the start and then get Pulisic when fit. With the extra goal point and CS point for mids, I think he could match Werner for points at 1.0m cheaper.

Ziyech is the starter for me. His left peg is the same as kdb's right peg. His age 27, 28? And experience tell me that'll he'll be best of Chelsea's new additions to adapt and get up to speed quickly. However, I have been wrong in the past!

I was really thinking of taking the gamble and swapping him for Son as well bc when they play there's very little to separate them. Everyone's got Son but I think the lion's share of points will go to Kane this year and it's not worth it at that price.

    My thoughts on the game.

    Arsenal
-Tierney - 5.5m looks good for assists, bonus and even the odd goal.
-Auba - Quite but half chance, one goal, usual.
-Martinez - Solid again, his place to lose (if he stays)

    Liverpool
-Front 3 has been off for a while. Salah seems to struggle to beat players now and with each game, Firmino is looking like one of the most overrated players of all time. They need competition, maybe Minamino can push Firmino as he looked good when he came on.
-Robertson looks a steal at his price.

If it wasn't for the City and Utd blanks, i actually think i'd avoid Liverpool attack. I'd much rather have KDB, Sterling, Bruno and the two Liverpool full backs. Mane looked good but he's 0.5-1m overpriced.

Listen, i don't care that he works hard, this Liverpool team scores for fun, he is the striker, in the last 2 seasons he's scored 21 league goals. Vardy scored more than that last year ffs.

I cba. All modern strikers work off the ball, Harry Kane plays like a quarter back most games for Spurs, Vardy runs the flanks all game long, Jimenez plays just like Firmino, it doesn't mean they don't score goals aswell.

You can't be arsed? What sort of attitude is that or is it because we're engaging in a discussion?

The examples you've given are all strikers in the team they play for. They are quite literally the target men for their respective team. While Kane and Jimenez hold up the ball and bring others into play, Vardy is the target man in terms of getting on the end of through balls. Firmino is typically deeper than both of Mane and Salah. He's there, to give the CB's a decision to make on whether to step out of the backline and mark him (thus leaving a gap for Mane/Salah to exploit) or to drop off, and risk Firmino playing quick one-twos around the edge of the box. He knits Liverpool's attack together.

I accept that he misses some chances that he should be scoring, particularly this season just gone. He probably acknowledges that he needs to improve his finishing, but to rate him on his goal scoring record is ignorant and unfair.

Aubameyang has a lot more defensive duties than Firmino and still bags in the goals, gotta stop making excuses for Firmino, he’s grossly overrated!

This is a myth, he's the lone striker, he plays in the same way Jimenez, Lacazette, Kane play.

Firmino had the 3rd most attempts of all strikers last season, only Jimenez and Jesus had more.

He was also 8th for big chances, more than Aguero, Jimenez, Ings, Kane.

Yet he only managed 9 goals, less than Deeney, Greenwood, Maupay, Lacazette, Pukki, Abraham.

                What else have you got?

He was no.1 in terms of assisting the assister

No. 2 in terms of winning the ball back in the opposition half

No. 1 in terms of regaining possession that directly led to a goal

It's not. They'd score that many goals with a lot of other PL strikers in the team.

Why the slur on Firmino? He's been incredible for at least two seasons now. We may need to anticipate a drop off in the performance of all Liverpool assets while they work to get back to the levels they're capable of.

This isn't just based off today, it's based off their post lockdown form. And even a few games before. They look like a tired team who have an over reliance on their full backs to create. Again, i'm sure Salah will score a lot, i'm sure Mane will score a lot, but its at the stage where i think KDB and Sterling are certainly better picks, and potentially Bruno and Auba too.

I just think it's become quite fashionable to knock Firmino. I'll never understand this as quite simply, Liverpool do not score lots of goals when he's not starting games.

He plays as a CAM or false 9 btw, so, he's literally not in the team as a striker.

I think you're making the mistake of comparing Firmino and the role he plays with where he's stationed in FPL. He's not a striker. Firmino is an enabler, he is WHY the rest of the team scores so much. Never a good FPL pick, granted, but a vital part of Liverpool winning the CL and Premier League.

However you look at it, his form has dipped over the last year, and as a result, does it make Liverpools 12m assets worth having? Thats the question here.

Firmino isn't the most overrated player of all time but he has definitely escaped criticism for his output this season far too easily. 9 PL goals and barely scoring at home is poor, even just by the standards he set in previous seasons. The good things he does don't change that.

This has been hijacked by the Firmino fanclub. Lets get back on topic. Are we at the point where Salah has been surpassed by other heavy hitters? I want the two full backs and might have Salah as a Sterling placeholder.

      1. Bushwhacker
        • 4 Years

Not a fanclub, just people who watch games and understand his role. That said the midfield conundrum is definitely a bigger one this year now they've borked the game by putting strikers there. Auba/KdB/Bruno/Sterling/Salah/Mane . . . its a harder pick than ever. Silly to think that Liverpool will just go awry though, TAA back and the right side becomes way more clinical.

The way i see it, City will comfortably outscore Liverpool. I'm thinking the two Liverpool full backs, and two City mids. Of course all this is pointless if Messi ends up signing.

I'm sorry but this thread has hurt my head. Firmino is possibly one of the best players I've ever seen at Liverpool with goals, assists or simply causing defenders hassle. To suggest he is overrated is beyond stupidity. This place is getting worse.

I keep coming back to the following picks:

    McCarthy
    Steer
    CTaylor
    KWP
    Vinagre
    Soucek
    Saka

I'm considering Bellerin and Coleman if I go up to 5m at the back.

    McCarthy / 4.0
    TAA / Robertson / Doherty / Tierney / 4.0

    1. Still undecided on Mitchell and KWP. Any other 4.0 or 4.5 defenders that you suggest?

Watching the community shield today reminded me of how creative and effective Robbo is and was thinking of taking a gamble and saving 0.5 to swap him for TAA. Know he's not on free-kicks so possibly 2-3 goals less but Salah also takes them as well so possibly not that big a difference?

Very impressed with Saka today and I'm quite tempted to have in my team.

Just not sure what Arteta plans do with Pepe & Willian.

agreed, if he was assured of a start in GW1 he'd be nailed in my team too

Do we think Ben Johnson will start for West Ham?

Probably not. Mitchell best 4.0 bet until Ferguson fit

can someone do an analysis of Aubameyung against the big sides since Arteta took over. Is he now joining the fixture proof pool with the likes of De bruyne and TAA?

Only 2m registered for FPL so far. Is there usually a huge spike towards the end?

People register all throughout the year. Will probably touch 4M by GW1

It''ll be well beyond 5m by GW1 - was near 6m last year.

good. Increases my chances of finishing inside the top 2m

Hi guys, after today’s performance do you think Arteta will find it hard to drop Martinez for the game against Fulham? Considering him as my keeper?

                    too risky imo

would be unfair on martinez to be dropped though

Chelsea only managed 1 goal against Brighton.

                    Only note I need 🙂
