Can Doherty continue to offer FPL points potential at Spurs?

Fantasy Premier League managers have already begun debating whether Matt Doherty‘s (£6.0m) move to Spurs makes him a better or worse asset.

We have compared the former Wolves man with the options already on offer in north London, with some further assessment of his clean sheet potential too.

Fantasy Football Scout user Sully29 neatly outlined the dilemma facing FPL managers:

The issue isn’t whether he will be attacking, it’s whether he’ll be able to attack in the same way he does at Wolves. Because if he doesn’t then his price becomes a problem.

– Community Member, Sully29

This article will examine not only the differences between Doherty and Serge Aurier (£5.5m) but also how Jose Mourinho has used full-backs previously in his career.

It will touch on the defensive progress Spurs have made under their new coach – as highlighted recently by Pro Pundit Sam Bonfield – and help FPL managers decide if the new signing should be included in their 15-man squads.

Advanced Right-Back

A key feature of how Tottenham Hotspur set-up under Mourinho is the use of an advanced right-back.

Ben Davies will be the sitting fb creating a three in defence Doherty will bomb on. Same tactic Jose used with Aurier.

He'll be fairly advanced just like Aurier was, but I can't see him getting into the box anywhere near as much as he did at Wolves.

Great article, Doherty locked in my team - will get attacking returns and plenty of CS in Jose's system and second season.

"In other words, Doherty might not have been bought to replicate Aurier’s role in the Spurs team, but instead could have been acquired for his natural attacking attributes. Only time will tell."

Of course he has, Mourinho knows what he's doing.

Swapping Son+Davies for Alli+Doherty doesn't seem crazy, especially given Kane's imminent return to striker...

Only downside is hindering flexibility to move easily to a 9.5 such as Rashford, or indeed down to 8.5 Pulisic. The upside could be massive though!

What I've done is 4m defender > Doherty and Kane > Jimenez. I've got him, Vardy and Werner - one of them should flop for Martial to come in. Also got Greenwood who can > Chelsea mid.

First RMT of pre-season, comments welcome!

    McCarthy Steer
    TAA Saiss Davies KWP Webster
    Salah Auba Bruno Soucek Bissouma
    Kane Adams Brewster

Relies on a Brewster loan move and Auba to KDB in GW2, leaving 0.5 in the bank to upgrade elsewhere.

I think I’m almost happy RMT

McCarthy (Nyland/Steer) if this becomes obvious

    KWP Egan Dier Robertson Johnson

    Salah Auba Son Soucek ASM

    Werner Ings Brewster

    Anything glaring?

    Questions

Dier & Son over Alli & Doherty?

Is the double Southampton defence risky and should I start with Justin or Vinagre?

If I was to go down on Soucek who do you consider best 4.5m midfielder?

    1. Flair
      • 3 Years

Alli and Doherty every time for me. Alli as good as Son in that second striker position and Doherty is miles better than Dier.

I'd probably do Alli & Doherty too.

Vinagre is a steal -- you should be able to swerve the City fixture by benching him.

Downgrading Soucek to 4.5 would be madness.

I'd say the opposite - Mourinho absolutely loves Dier and he's definitely in his first-choice CB pairing. Whereas Rose (and possibly Sessegnon?) can challenge Davies.

In pre-season Sess has mainly been playing further forward as a left-winger, and Dennis Cirkin has been getting minutes and could feature this season. Spurs struggled when Davies was out last season, I wouldn't mind seeing another left-back join the team.

At some point we're likely to find a mill to get Doh from Dier/Davies - perhaps from a premium forward downgrade. Think there's enough doubt to hold off from what may v expensive clean sheets plus a bit.

Are there any midfielders that look likey to leave? I have an early draft in my draft league. Anticipating Havertz or maybe even Messi to come in at a later date. Only way I can pick them up is if one of my mids leaves the league.

West Ham has 11 of them so surely one of them has to be on the way out, right?

Bakayoko has to go I'd imagine, although the Tonali deal might've closed off Milan as a destination.

I'm going with Saka, looked really good ending the season as well as CS. if he gets moved to bench then I'll change.

VAN DE BEEK: Government confirms he will not need to self-isolate for 14 days in UK - provided he’s a registered Man Utd player before either of next two games for Netherlands. Same exemption for all PL/EFL players on international duty. #TransferShow #SSN #MUFC

So we don't have to worry about self isolation for players after returning from International Duty as they have been given special exemption.

I'm tempted to go Ings & Jimenez upfront and just use transfers to rotate the heavy hitters in midfield. Reasons:

    - Both will start every game (fitness depending)
    - Both score consistently, whether it be goals, or assists. Steady stream of points.
    - Both hog the bonus points when they score
    - Jimenez on pens, Ings might get them.
    - One game a week.

At 8.5, i think both should hit 15+ goals again. As much as i'd love Kane, i don't think i'd captain him often, as much as i'm tempted by Werner, i think it will take him time, especially in games where teams defend in blocks. As much as i'd like Martial, i think i'd prefer Bruno.

    Thoughts?

They are both good options tbf.
I just like the idea of Werner + Martial because that combo feels much more explosive.

Beginning to think the same. I'm massively biased as a Chelsea fan so removing Werner would pain me, but an extra million would let me go from Auba to KDB/Sterling and Son up to Bruno, rather than Rashford.

Werner + Rashford or Jimenez + Bruno would seem to be the question.

I don't know what to make on Werner. Having watched him, i think he'll struggle against low blocks and do well on the counter in more open games. Having said that, he's going to be so highly owned and like the poster above said, potentially explosive.

Like the idea, you are right on all points. Only thing concerning me from doing the same is Werner's ownership.

    RMT please!

    McCarthy (Nyland)
Doherty | Robertson | KWP (Taylor or Pieters | 4.0)
    Salah | Auba | Son | Armstrong | Soucek
Werner | Ayew (Brewster) 2.0m ITB

My thoughts here are that with 2.0m in the bank, I have a respectable team which allows me to be dynamic in my transfers going into GW2. It allows me to make pretty much any transfer without having to take a hit. The aim is for flexibility after the first two game weeks to adapt as I feel there are so many unknowns with Midfield v Forwards debate.

Think you are better of with
      TAA + Dier + Ings
      Over
      Rob + Doh + Ayew + 2m

But go for it if you feel like it!

That's what I had previously, but I hate the fact I'm locked in and can only go Son -> Greenwood
