Can Doherty continue to offer FPL points potential at Spurs?

Fantasy Premier League managers have already begun debating whether Matt Doherty‘s (£6.0m) move to Spurs makes him a better or worse asset.

We have compared the former Wolves man with the options already on offer in north London, with some further assessment of his clean sheet potential too.

Fantasy Football Scout user Sully29 neatly outlined the dilemma facing FPL managers:

The issue isn’t whether he will be attacking, it’s whether he’ll be able to attack in the same way he does at Wolves. Because if he doesn’t then his price becomes a problem.

– Community Member, Sully29

This article will examine not only the differences between Doherty and Serge Aurier (£5.5m) but also how Jose Mourinho has used full-backs previously in his career.

It will touch on the defensive progress Spurs have made under their new coach – as highlighted recently by Pro Pundit Sam Bonfield – and help FPL managers decide if the new signing should be included in their 15-man squads.

Advanced Right-Back

A key feature of how Tottenham Hotspur set-up under Mourinho is the use of an advanced right-back.

          I’m starting with Salah, Aubameyang, Mane, Greenwood (benched).

          Mane to KDB GW2.

      KDB, Bruno and Kane can all be considered relatively likely to hit at least 200. Out of Jimenez, Werner and Greenwood I see two who maybe could, although one has much higher upside than the other.

      Good fixture GW1 has tempted many, but it's a marathon, not a sprint. 5th midfielder that can be benched seems the right spot.

        Same for me. He'll likely see plenty bench time as first sub, one who I'd be fine to step up to cover an injury or rotation, and is always a possible goal-scorer. Also on the bench will be a 4.5 mid who isn't guaranteed game time.

      They are on paper (ticker), but in terms of attack they're not thaaaat bad.

      Newcastle plum home GW1. Arsenal away is tough but London rivals and could still get one or two goals - still don't think the gunners that strong defensively. Wolves backline in tatters RN - could take a while for them to get going. Leicester same, could be leaky. Spurs are spurs... They could walk away from these 5 games with a fair few goals even if they lose - and I'd expect him to be involved in maybe 1/2 them.

      Herd needs money to upgrade Davies /Dier to Doherty and Son has to be downgraded therefore. So it's like getting certain Theo W in not so long ago 😉

        There were times last year Son was so close to the touchline, He had no impact on games just getting white paint on his boots, I owned Son last season and he was always frustrating when I got on.

    I'd like to upgrade a 4.5m defender to a 5m option. But can't find the 0.5m.

      What is your plan with those 8 attacking assets? You need them all? Gordon is 4.5 fodder and allows you to upgrade also 4.0 def to 4.5.

        Soucek starts gw1 when greenwood is benched

        Last season I got burnt constantly by having a weak bench.

        With covid I have vowed to have a slightly stronger bench this season. Soucek fits the bill

          Come on. After the restart, he had a 29% goal conversion, an 'anomaly.' Only players such as, Lacazette, Martial, Kane, Ings, and Mane, can produce such a high conversion rate. Clearly, he is due to regress.

        So has Son/Werner/Aubameyang a potential for big hauls. Most have Trent out of fear and lack of lateral thinking liverpools first three fixtures not great defensively. Remember gw1 last season?

          I don’t see it as a lack of lateral thinking, a player that has a very good chance of hitting 200+ points again for 7.5, for me is a bargain. He always has great potential for attacking returns and I would imagine they will get at least one cs out of those first 3 games. But each to their own.

      Yeah, though I wonder if it's exaggerated by Jose's tactics that allow a ton of shots, racking up xG. Højbjerg's arrival as a strong, ballwinning midfielder over Winks/Sissoko and Doherty replacing Aurier, and more time on the training ground should help out. 2nd in the league for big chances conceded too, decent progress there.

    That scare me a little bit but I think I am going to start without Salah. My captains will be => Auba (then KDB) and Bruno

    McCarthy (Nyland)
    TAA-Dier-Vinagre-Mitchell (Taylor)
    Auba(C)-Alli-Soucek (BRUNO-Bissouma)
    Werner-Kane-Mitro

    Transfer ideas :
    Auba => KDB/Salah/Sterling/Mane or even Messi If he signs at City (downgrading kane to Ings or Jimenez)
    Kane => Aguero/Ings/Jimenez/Martial
    Alli => Wilian/Pulisic/Havertz/Greenwood/Son
    Mitro => Wood/Adams/Ayew
    Soucek => ASM/Armstrong/Saka etc...

    Any thoughts ?

          Not true Davies will sit making a three, Doherty given licence to bomb on.
          If Doherty was English he would be worth 60m and people would be raving about him. As he is an Irish player he was a bargain price.

            I don't agree all. Visit the Wolves fans forums and they say he's an average footballer with a great positional sense that suited Nuno Espirito's style of play.

            The fact that they're willing to let him go for £ 15m means they're comfortable in finding a replacement to slot into the system.

            Let's not make this about whether I like Doherty or not. I do in FPL terms (last year) but he's a very safe footballer that doesn't take risks. Will he be more advanced than Davies? Probably. Will he be worth 6m? I doubt it.

              Well I believe Jose will just use him same way as he used Aurier - except Doherty less error prone.
              That is the beauty of football though one mans trash is another's gold.

                Do you think Mourinho chose to use Aurier the way he did, or given that attacking is Aurier’s only strength, he had no choice?

                I suspect he’ll allow Doherty to play his natural game but expect him never to be out of position defensively.

                  Yeah he did. Same thing Jose did at Porto

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfwkuTX5COs

                  One fb sits other bombs on.
                  Ferreira was the attacking fb at Porto as Aurier was at spurs

                  https://totalfootballanalysis.com/article/jose-mourinho-tottenham-hotspur-201920-tactical-analysis-tactics

                  Again says it below: (fella playing fm19)

                  Jose borrowed the Brazilian utilitarian approach to wingbacks, using one very attacking wingback (emphasis on “winger”) and one defensive one

        I don't follow. Valencia was a winger turned into a FB. He was only worth 6m playing OOP.

        Genuinely don't know what the fuss is with Doherty. He's now effectively POO, and there will be two decent option saving you 1m.

    Anyone else think Villa may be a rather different proposition this time around?

    Looking at the ticker I’m upgrading their defence somewhat. Post lockdown they were solidly mid table in defence imo and looking at stats in the round that seems a reasonable assumption.

    I’m definitely not seeing weeks 3 and 4 as fill your boots type fixtures for Fulham or Liverpool. The away fixture to Fulham in particular I can see them setting up in a way to avoid goals

      No because Chelsea do not know how to defend. Chelsea will be like Newcastle under Keegan in 90's great to watch going forward and clueless defensively.

      Not quite yet. Rudiger doesn't always make correct decisions positionally but the new signing has been brought in to help resolve that. Another CB , goalkeeper and a quality RB would make them competitive from the perspective of winning the PL.
