Pro Pundits - Tom

Identifying the non-‘big six’ clubs with the best early fixtures in 2020/21

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), looks at the favourable fixture runs of clubs outside the ‘big six’.

Though football in the COVID-19 era looks and feels different, home advantage is still a thing.

Yes, there has been a slight drop in home win percentage across Europe’s top leagues but the change is not large and, for most clubs outside of the elite, targeting wins at the location you know best still makes the most sense.

So, with this in mind, what I’ve tried to do in this article is identify the teams outside of the traditional ‘big six’ who have the best runs of consecutive, winnable home matches that we can tap into – the types of games managers will be earmarking for three points.

I’ll then offer my thoughts on the stand-out assets from each of the clubs discussed. You’ll notice that I’ve tried to ensure there are a few reasonable away matches thrown in too and that all of the runs I highlight start no later than Gameweek 6. At this stage, there seems little point looking too far ahead, but if it proves popular, it’s something I might revisit further down the line.

Also, because of the type of fixture runs I’ve focused on, I’ve removed games against last season’s Premier League top eight from my analysis, which is worth remembering when viewing the data.

I have to admit I hate Kepa. He is not good enough for PL. And I see your point. But still, the impact could be massive on such a defense - Kepa included.

Maldini played at the top level until he was 40. As did Lothar Mattheus.

Saw Maldini at 40 in the San Siro vs Arsenal (latter won 2:0). He was the worth the trip for his poise. Don't think we'll ever see his like again.

Maybe they just couldn't get a top central defender and instead of wasting money on a player they didn't really want they decided on a cheap short term plan? If I were a Chelsea manager my priority would be strengthening defence and goalkeeper position but if you can't get anyone you really want it's just sometimes better to wait. Chelsea in the recent years made a lot of mistakes spending all the money on useless players not really improving the team. I think Thiago Silva can play another year at a top level, then he can possibly be withdrawn a bit from the first team, playing more marginal role. And besides, Chelsea really needed more experience in the squad.

Personally i think Werner can wait until GW3. Brighton away and Liverpool at home doesn't scream goals. You'll have a better idea of how he's settling by then too.

ok, I have to make a plan....Salah or Auba to Bruno or Rashford, alternatively Werner to Martial, or Ziyech / Alli to Greenwood. Or someone to Sancho if he joins on the transfer deadline.

            I'll probably wing it.

The only question, though, was how to field a team in which all players will be nailed. Fab and ASM are the only ones that are 100% nailed of that group.

None will probably haul. Saka might get only one point. Keita vs Leeds then? Tbh I haven't been following him or Liverpool mids too much, seen him sometimes behind Mane when I had him. First match against Leeds after winning PL, there could be attitude issue?

I would wait until their fixtures turn in October, Ayling or Dallas the two wing backs should be good and if new forward Rodrigo starts to fire at 6m might be worth it.

I don’t think they will be as good as Wolves were but should stay up comfortably this year which I think is the objective.

Hi mate, yeah, I do quite like Everton from 2-4, but this one was more about trying to find the teams with solid runs of consecutive, winnable home matches.

Be interesting to see how the line up tho, loads of mids being linked right now.

They need a better defender than Keane to protect Pickford. Have drifted in and out of Rich for years, but hos reclassification is a pain.

How do people see Everton line up next season and do you think there will be a change of formation to accommodate this new midfield of theirs?

Don't see Gomes being dropped, maybe a change to 451 with Richarlison being moved to the left and DCL as the lone striker?

    1. Rocky FPL
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

It will be either 4-5-1 with James and Richarlison wide or if Ancelotti needs pace on the wing, then a 4-2-3-1 with James as CAM. Either way, DCL will be a lone striker imo.

      Would think it'd be:

      Pickford
      Coleman / Holgate / Keane / Digne
      Allan / Gomez / Doucoure
      Richarlison / James
      DCL

Quite settled with 12 out of 15 pick.
These 3 are still question marks:

    McCarthy - 4.0
    TAA - ___ - Vinagre - Justin - Mitchell
    Salah - Auba - ___ - JWP - 4.5
    ___ - Werner - Mitro/Adams

Which one of those would you fill in it with:

    A) Doherty + Alli + DCL

    B) Dier + Pereira + Vardy

Feel like JWP is safer since he shares pens with Ings and is on corners. Che seems to have nailed a spot but not sold 100% yet

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

I don't think Ings takes pens really. Didn't he only take 2 pens at the end of the season because he was fighting for the golden boot?

    2. Paul Psychic Octopus
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 13 Years

I think Che, not because he's a better player or likely to score more points than JWP. More that the pricier heavy hitters this season look to be in midfield after the re-classifications. Hence the need for at least one cheap striker and I prefer Adams to Mitro or any of the rest (at the moment).

Wolves fans, what's the deal with Podence? I know he wasn't nailed last season but looked good near the end. Is he worth the 5th playing mid spot or should I play it safe with Armstrong or ASM? Not sure how he fits in the team and if he will get more minutes this time.

As above mate, this one was more about trying to find the teams with really appealing runs of consecutive, winnable home matches. Everton have West Brom, Brighton, Liverpool then Man Utd, which ruled them out.

Spurs I'd class as one of the traditional 'big six', so wanted to focus on other sides this time, else they would have been included.

That could be the case but I think he could be safe up to initial 2-3 GWs which should give enough time to assess how well Chelsea's new assets are gelling. Right now both Pulisic and Ziyech are flagged.

I think people want sure starters for the first few GWs. Transfers needed for bandwagons and avoiding price changes (0.1m is effectively 0.5m in the first few weeks). Mount is a risk despite what you say

Well if you're benching Mitro, for me Werner+Armstrong look to have more points potential then Ings+Stephens (particularly the latter, unless it's a different Stephens). Armstrong crops up with goals and Werner in this Chelsea team should outscore Ings.
