Pro Pundits - Tom

Identifying the non-‘big six’ clubs with the best early fixtures in 2020/21

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), looks at the favourable fixture runs of clubs outside the ‘big six’.

Though football in the COVID-19 era looks and feels different, home advantage is still a thing.

Yes, there has been a slight drop in home win percentage across Europe’s top leagues but the change is not large and, for most clubs outside of the elite, targeting wins at the location you know best still makes the most sense.

So, with this in mind, what I’ve tried to do in this article is identify the teams outside of the traditional ‘big six’ who have the best runs of consecutive, winnable home matches that we can tap into – the types of games managers will be earmarking for three points.

I’ll then offer my thoughts on the stand-out assets from each of the clubs discussed. You’ll notice that I’ve tried to ensure there are a few reasonable away matches thrown in too and that all of the runs I highlight start no later than Gameweek 6. At this stage, there seems little point looking too far ahead, but if it proves popular, it’s something I might revisit further down the line.

Also, because of the type of fixture runs I’ve focused on, I’ve removed games against last season’s Premier League top eight from my analysis, which is worth remembering when viewing the data.

    How does this look?

    McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Vinagre
    Salah Auba Son Soucek
    Werner Mitro Adams

    Subs: Nyland, Ferguson, Johnson, Stephens

Leaves 1.5 ITB for Son > Bruno GW2 and Auba > KDB/Sterling GW3. After that can upgrade one of the 4.0 defenders (to Taylor possibly).

To be fair to you, it is almost as template as it's possible to get (adams aside). So it's a fairly safe bet to do ok in the ffs league

Beyond obvious catastrophes of which there are none in your team, I advise not taking advice about which players to choose. People have their own ideas about players that fit in with the own ethos and strategy and are not really helpful to dispense to others as titbits.

Salah is out of form, drop him for Havertz or Willian and upgrade DF with Robbo. Mitro will not give you goal but yellow/red card and missed penalty.

Ings is the right striker to start and move to Martial. Keep Son if he's firing

        Cheers, all valid points.

Salah has a higher ceiling than Havertz or Willian for me. Feel quite comfortable with Werner and Auba covering Chelsea and Arsenal anyway.

Mitro can be upgraded to Antonio once his fixtures are more favourable. Ings is overpriced, prefer the Adams punt. Prefer Bruno to Martial also. Would like to keep Son but need United/City cover and Spurs don’t tend to score more than one or two anyway. Hoping Doherty will be enough.

Good point, and indeed as esteemed Nightrain points out - it's only one week...

I guess there's a raft of Wildcards played that GW, and I'm assuming that those squads will include assets from these squads too....

I just noticed that RMT and "team fixtures difficulty" were an outlier in GW2.

Prefer Soucek myself, due to higher ceiling. Often find it tricky rotating two defs, especially when home advantage is not quite the same with no crowds, and some teams being better away than home last season (Southampton!).

Depends on their relative fixtures. I'll be rotating Soucek on and off the bench with 4.5 defenders.

Very decent strategy. I worry though that Soucek could score in any game, from a set piece. Sods law he'd end up being benched when he scores! Good dilemma to have though.

Late night pondering, pretty happy with my side but keep questioning my defence.

    McCarthy — £4m
    Trent — Dier — Vinagre — Justin — £4m
    Salah — Dele — Auba — Soueck — Greenwood
    Werner — Mitro — £4.5m

Trent/Dier can stay just unsure who are the best £4.5m options and if I want to stay at £4.5m.

I have £1.5m in the bank.

    McCarthy
    TAA | Vinagre | Justin/4.5
    Auba(KDB) | Salah(Fernandes) | Alli | Barnes(Pulisic) | Armstrong
    Werner | Ings

    Nyland | Brewster | Mitchell | Johnson(Taylor)

GW2: Salah to Fernandes (Barnes to Pulisic could be completed in GW2 also but will likely delay due to Pulisic's current injury and fixture)
GW3: Barnes to Pulisic & Auba to KDB

0.5 has been left ITB for potential price rises to achieve transfers.
If no money is lost then the money can be used to get 4.0 to Taylor in GW4 in readiness for Burnley's fixtures v Newcastle & West Brom.
Pulisic is of particular interest in GW3, avoids Liverpool (GW2) and greater initial fixtures of West Brom and Crystal Palace.

Agree with this. Alli was in great form when he was fit and playing behind Kane. One of best xGI ratings amongst mids. Son is very different out on the wing - still a good option, but the 1.0m saving swings it to Alli for me.

Almost identical team to mine, now I look at it! 🙂

Alli has been in a steady decline since his 225 points four years ago so he will never be a decent pick and perhaps we forgot we've been disappointed too many times by him, while Son, we know he's the Super Sonny so IMHO he's the better pick

I'm using BRI/SOT and BUR/WOL myself. I think NEW fits well with a couple, as does Palace.

Useful list, thanks. The only ones where rotation is really an option are:

        AVL/ CRY - Targett/Mitchell
        BHA / LEE - Lamptey/Ayling
        LEI / BUR - Justin/Taylor
SHU / SOU - Egan/KWP (bit expensive, this option)
        WHU / NEW - any/Lascelles

Villa/Palace looks OK, if Mitchell plays a lot, and saves 0.5m. Otherwise maybe Leicester/Burnley.

Note that these are home-away rotations. Despite the article above, I find that less useful that rotations that avoid the Top-6 or Top-8.

That's v true, as many home/away rotations are pretty naff if they just play top sides.

Yes, this was just a Home/Away list.
LEI-AVL misses the historical top 6 until week 18. Best defensive rotation in my opinion, if you can stomach an AVL defender that is. Not for me, I don't think, but Justin / Targett could be a play, for instance.

60-70% imo.. our new no.7, central to how we attack, gets lots of assists. Rotation with Willian willock and Pepe is a concern though.

Could do a lot of good I agree, but with the squad with the depth that Chelsea now have and city they would definitely have an unfair advantage, look at Burnley after the restart could hardly even list a bench had to promote loads of kids

      Ah, good morning.

It's super-template, no weaknesses as such.

Utterly trivial point - you'll need a new 4m keeper.
      Squad and plans - excellent.
BUT where in your roadmap do you bring in KDB and/or Bruno?
      Is it GW2 Martial
      GW3 Auba > KDB?

I think there’s more value with forwards this year, if I want to get a premium mid I’ll downgrade one of the forwards to say a performing 6.0, then that could fund say Barnes to a more expensive midfielder

downgrade one of the forwards to say a performing 6.0 .. you get that from Andy, right? 😀 yeah could be golden move. In my case, i wouldn't dare to start the season without Salah and Auba. Good luck!

I really want auba but I’m just not sure how good arsenal are gonna be, I can see Arteta playing a bit more Defensively that what were used to with them

Me? I don't see any 'performing' 6 except in defence. I've gone even bigger up top - Vardy, Werner & Martial, leaving just one premium midf. It's similar to Kloppcorn except I have TAA & Robbo at the back.

I thought you'd downgrade one of your big strikers to a performing 6.0 at later stages if needed. Ah, may be someone else.

I like to keep all options open and try find ways I can get certain premium assets in when their on form with max two transfers, I’m hoping I won’t need to downgrade a forward but I like to know the options there if it comes to it

Oh right. It's an option IF a budget striker emerges. Alternatively I might take a 4.5 and add a premium midfielder (more likely). I've tried to ensure the squad is flexible to respond to circumstances. I'm hoping my GK and Back 5 are a settled foundation, with my midfield and front-line the focus of developments.

I think Spurs will have a very good season, but I foresee their progress as a bit like Wolves last year - intense EL commitments will slow them down at first before getting up a head of steam. I've currently got one - Alli - in my squad but I can see one or two more in my squad later in the campaign.

We saw what happened with Burnley and wolves so i totally get that notion.. but those teams rarely rotate their players. We're talking about Spurs here.. recent ucl finalist, and so many players like locelso lamela and moura to be given minutes.

Had Alli in my previous draft, but changed it to greenwood. Not sure if alli for one gw makes sense. Would do alli > greenwood gw 2 anyway.

I've got one Manc on my bench - Martial. I'm starting Alli with the idea that he will either stay, > Greenwood, or > a Chelsea midfielder. To me it's not urgent that he be in my squad straight away. Couls say the same about Martial, but to me he's fully nailed, unlike Greenwood.

Greenwood should be nailed unless united sign someone else. Plan is salah > bruno gw2 and auba > kdb gw3. Prefer Martial to greenwood anyday, think I should dump vardy and bench martial gw1?

I guess I'll think about Greenwood again, no guarantee to start and best to start with additional ARS or CHE.

Vardy is too expensive to start especially with no Maddison supplying ball, perhaps Ings and pick Barnes as LEI to go ?
KWP+JWP is too much mediocre SOU for my taste too

    RMT

    Martinez (McCarthy if doesn't start)
    TAA, Vinagre, KWP
    Salah, Auba, Son, ASM, Soueck
    Werner, Antoino

    Nyland, Lampety, Mitchell, Ayew

    1.0 ITB

    Auba or Salah for KDB
    Son to Fernandes

      are you WC-ing soon ?
double WHU is too risky to go

My pick is to drop Martinez for Steer, McCarthy for me isn't really good, Ryan is better but Lloris is the best way to go
      drop Ayew for Brews/Davis
Also consider strengthening defense by switching Salah out for CHE

WHU first 3,4 fixtures are not that terrible, if you look at it closely.

Antonio and Soucek here as well, WC as escape route

        1. Nightrain_

based on last season result, here it is :

          vs ARS (H) 1-3 (A) 0-1
          vs WOL (H) 0-2 (A) 0-2
          vs LEI (H) 1-2 (A) 1-4

out of 6 games, they only manage to put in 3 goals, so if you're betting on 2 attackers with that statistic, i think it's not a good move. Of course with Soucek and Antonio's new position, things will be different, but what I'm saying is that there's a chance that you'll burn WC early

If you put it that way, yeah it looks like a bad investment.. but I really fancy them to do well vs New - very poor in the air (vvd's goal against them in GW38+ was totally anticipated), whu are very strong in the air, plus no dubravka? I'm taking my chances as well

I was contemplating using my wild card early. To be fair I'm not sold on Salah this season.

I have alot of other teams but i'm just trying to find balance.

        I did have

        Ryan
        TAA, Vinagre, KWP
        ASM, Soueck, Ziyech, Salah, Auba
        Jiminez, Werner

        Nyland, Mitchell, Lampety, 6.5 striker

Thanks my defense is pretty good. Simply need to make a decision on which attacking asset is best for that price range.
