Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

Curiosity from the community article on the template on here is that Southampton defence is over 100% EO and Burnley 25% when gks are factored in. Palace are around 70% - which can only mean Mitchell.

Seems slightly odd when there are 4.5 Burnley options and 4 of their first 8 are decent for defence. Is this a case of GW1 skewing choices?

Looking to not go Mitchell but try and get benched Burnley instead unless news comes through that PvA is a long way off. Can't see a game until GW5 where I'd want Palace defence and PvA could well be back by then

I'm also getting a bit COVID aware and thinking of getting at least 2 decent playing bench. Soucek won't be the last - Traore scare would have put him out for a week anyway.

Oh sorry didn't realise. Yeah people are busy planning the Manchester assets, the Burnley assets are getting ignored, because of the blank and relatively poor fixtures. Their only have 2 banker games in the first 7 weeks, both away games.

Mccarthy has 80% ownership on his own so its not really a surprise, he's generally accepted to be the best value keeper based on what we know at the moment.
Why would anyone own a more expensive keeper who doesn't have a fixture?

Yes I see that but the contrast with Burnley is stark. My point was really to draw attention to how Burnley are being ignored typically on here. A 4.5 Burnley defender is quite possibly the equal of Mccarthy.

They don't have great fixtures though, how many Burnley cleansheets do you predict in the first 10 gameweeks?

I'm running up to GW8 as 9 looks WC territory to me with Liverpool and City getting major fixture turns around then. I'd put them on 3 - about the same as Southampton. Nothing spectacular but decent enough.

Not convinced by them but thinking I need/want a fifth playing defender and can't see much better at 4.5

Saliba and Vinagre if either look like starting but I agree, not many nailed options.

With 3 transfers up until Christmas and owning 3 premium players at a time, you can have the following captains:
    Salah (LEE, ARS, SHU, WHM)
    Vardy (WHM, AVL, FUL, BRI)
    Auba (WHM, AVL)
    Sterling (FUL, WBA)
    Fernandes (WBA, LEE)

And all that without having the highest scoring premium in the game 😀

The problem with KDB is that you can't predict his high scoring games which makes him a tricky player to captain and so it diminishes the appeal of using a premium slot on him.
I'd rather go for the 'bullies' who are more predictable in their scoring.

Agreed actually - only captained him last season when nothing else was on. Still feels a bit odd.

I'd put Bruno in the same category too - but now Martial is a forward he feels less tasty as a captain option

KDB performs better against stronger oppositions. It is more predictable than one would think, you can see how Pep tweaks formations based on opposition difficulty. So we want Sterling against trash opposition, KDB against the better opponents.

It's ingrained in me to choose a captain with an easy fixture, it just doesn't feel right to pick someone because they have a tough game.
Out of curiosity, which other players score more FPL points against tougher opposition?
The only one I can think of is Jimenez.

KdB also performs against bottom feeders. That's the wrinkle

              Norwich = 19 points
              Watford = 17 points
              West Ham = 14 points
              Brighton = 13 points

Arguably the double digits against Arsenal and Chelsea aren't that unexpected either given the nature of those defences last time. They were very midtable at best defences, The one big one was Liverpool.

The irritation with KdB captain is that too can pick the fixture and get the result and occasionally get nothing. Had him for a 5-0 against Btrighton and got zip

    Quick RMT:
Finally settled on this I think.
Current plans are the obivous Aubameyang -> De Bruyne for GW3. Also, thinking Vardy -> Werner at the same time, depending on how first 2 GWs play out. Happy with the 3 way rotation of Vinagre/KWP/Lindelof, playing 2 every weeks gives me some very friendly fixtures. What guys do you think?

    Ramsdale - Peacock-Farrell
    Alexander-Arnold - Doherty - Vinagre - Walker-Peters - Lindelof
    Salah - Aubameyang - Son - Armstrong - Bissouma
    Vardy - Mitrovic - Brewster

    Best 5.0 + 4.5 defensive combo?

(I already have McCarthy, TAA, Doherty, Taylor)

    5.0: Saiss/ Egan/ Bellerin?
    4.5: Justin/ KWP/ Lascelles/ Dallas?

    1. -RAKEY-
      • 3 Years

Dier/Davies & Lascelles gives you a good 3 way rotation with Taylor

    2. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

I'd go Saiss to get Wolves and think about Dallas/Ayling.

Justin must be a slight doubt with new signing, Newcastle would be an avoid for me and I wouldn't want double Southampton defence.

Leeds is a bit of a punt of course but could be good in week 2 when Saiss is excluded and they're possibly ok in 6/7 when Burnley doesn't look too hot

Brighton Def are more solid than Soton last year, this season they have Ben White, Veltman (Ajax Captain), Lamptey, Bissouma reborn, players understand Potter style more, Potter try so many formations last year and he must get the one he like finally. All are settle.

Meanwhile Soton are the same defenders which I never trust (Berdnatrek, Stephens, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Peter) are not solid as Dunk, Webster, Burn, White..., even lose Hoijberg.

Why McCarthy is so popular than Ryan?

Nah, Southampton has it easier but honestly, it doesn't matter. They will both be within 20-30 points of each other and no matter which want you to choose it's not worth the time, just pick either and stick.

You also know that Brighton had a higher xGc than S'ton.
The main reason they conceded less was due to the 9-0 vs Leicester with the red card.

Ownership of Ryan is actually higher as of now (21% vs 19%)

McCarthy is popular here because of RMT post mostly picking him but people out there know Ryan is better.

However I don't really trust both. I believe investing 1M more in 5.5 GK can add 30-50 pts to your whole score.

      Why crazy ?

They're up against Leeds and then Chelsea away and Arsenal. Not an easy game for him and Salah hasn't got his form lately and saw him in decline after his injury against Madrid back then

He could get a goal in the opening week but so did Ings for 3.5M cheaper

Honestly I don't know, sorry. All I know is that in my case I'm contemplating between having Rashford from the start or having Willian as a placeholder. Doesn't change much for me if he doesn't start, other than a purely wasted transfer.

      1. AllINeedIsCoffee

Those are valid concerns. I'm not too unhappy with having to stick to Salah for most games, and I'll have Rashford and Son to back on to when they have good matches so it's not too much of a problem but yes, usually one would prefer to have two almost guaranteed heavy hitters.

I'm 0.5 over budget. Can you knowledgeable people please help me figure out a good way to adjust?

    McCarthy - Nyland
    TAA - Doherty - Vinagre - KWP - 4.5
    Auba (will become Bruno/KDB wk 2) - Son - Jota - Zaha - Bissouma
    Kane - Ings - DCL

Someone will surely suggest Kane --> Werner and that's fair but I was thinking I'd wait a week or two to scope out how Chelsea attack plays out.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking, you pretty much snooker yourself. The chances of a decent 4.5 mid or two (like Cantwell) appearing are much more likely than an on-fire Connor Wickham & Keinan Davis. I've just got to be bold and suck up the no-Salah squad.

Will WC before WK 2 for Utd / City players. Current WK 1 team below:

    McCarthy
    TAA - Dier - KWP
    Son - Salah - Auba - Barnes - ASM
    Werner - Antonio
    (Nyland - Dallas - Brewster - Mitchell)

    1) Is Dier a sure starter?

I'm running with JWP but keeping money ITB to swap to Grealish when Villa's fixtures turn GW6. Don't like any of the other mids under 7 until at least a few games in when we've got more data.

the problem is, if you dont use 5-6.5m mid and is forced to use 3 mid formations, it is highly likely you have to start with 2x 4.5m def every week, well if that's okay with you

true but normally a 5.5 bandwagon can reach 6.0 in only 3-4 GWs
among the current 6.0, only JWP and Trossard is worth to watch IMHO but 5.5 is way better and bank the 0.5
