Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

    McCarthy
    Doherty Digne Tierney Vinagre Justin
    Salah Auba Alli Armstrong 4.5
    Werner Ings 4.5

Did Punt on the defence without TAA. But lets see how it goes. Doherty Digne and Tierney Do have a lots of attacking potential in them

    0.5 ITB for Possibly Alli>Greenwood
    OR Ings> Martial

    Thoughts??

nice team, Just to be safe of price changes maybe downgrade deference by getting in a 4.0 instead of Justin, your not going to play 5 atb anyways.

My worry is martial/kdb/bruno going up on Saturday itself, pricing out a few players who wait for gw1 performance of their team. Rest looks ok.

Zaha, mount other options at 7, in case alli does not get into playing 11.

Don’t think Lundstram starts the season, so definitely him to a 4.5 and then Alli to Son. Going without TAA isn’t worth it for me

Doherty owners confident of him starting in week 1? He has been away on International Duty and hasn't played any pre season friendly. Aurier has started most friendlies.

Depends upon the situation with Aurier's transfer. If it looks like Aurier will be leaving then Doh comes in sooner, if not then I strongly suspect Doh participates in the UEFA games initially and starts initially in the PL team as a sub.

Look at it this way. If you put in Son with .5 otb it gives you a way of getting Rash/Greenwood in. If you have Kane/Vardy/Kane you can get Martial.
A problem you may encounter is the player you replace could well perform at the same level as Manc players. The downside is price increases week 2 for them.
Benching a Citeh/Manc could hurt Week 1 Points.
I think I will get a strong Week 1 team and ride the storm until Week 3

One of the rags say Klopp will keep him until January at least. No reason to be fake news.

With all the Everton signings is DCL position at risk with Richarlison pushed up top on his own?

Ancelotti likes him and also like to play 4 4 2. I think he is safe

Any idea how is Brighton lining up? Their 2 4.5m mid (not Stephens) interest me.

Morning lads. Do we think Mount is going to get some game time while Puli and Ziyech is injured? Worth a go for GW1?

Harvetz might start in his position, but Frank loves him and will most likely play him. Switch him for pulisic when he's back.

I really feel though kovacic would be a great 5.5 budget this season.

This build would allow me to bring in KDB and Bruno in gameweek 2 with the 1m in the bank. thoughts?

    McCarthy - Nyland
    TAA - KWP - Vinagre - Justin - Mitchell
    Salah - Auba - Son - ASM - Bissouma
    Werner - Ings - 4.5

Similar team to mine. Only thing is, you’re lining yourself up for a hit GW2 and that’s only if everything goes to plan with no injuries etc. Think about going martial over Ings then just moving Salah to Bruno, then Kdb gw3?

Do we prefer Saka over ASM now due to Newcastle's awful form and injury woes?

Too much uncertainty over Saka's minutes. Neither ideal picks, get Souchek if fit or stretch to JWP.

Think ASM will do well on his own, regardless of Newcastle's form

Remember he's 5.5, i'm not expecting much from him.

im going with saka cause BruceBall is not attacking. Arteta likes attacking football and likes saka too it seems, and i see him improving from last season.

Good stats, xA last season was great with somewhat limited game time and ups&downs with managerial situation. Cant see ASM improving as much.

I just think Saka minutes will be limited up top with Pepe and willian fit, may get time at wing back but too much uncertainty. Either go soucek or try and ASM. JWP is quite a good shout

    A) Saiss / Coady
    B) Davies (but already have Loris)

Thoughts on this? Have 1.5 itb to move Son to Bruno GW2. Will then likely move Salah out for KDB gw3

    Ryan
    TAA, vinagre, kWP, Taylor, Mitchel
    Salah, auba, son, Barnes, soucek
    Werner, mitro, 4.5

I was on almost the exact squad and plan for quite a while. For me I just didn't want Mitro as my 2nd striker so dropped Salah and upgraded him to Ings/Martial as well as elsewhere.

But I think it's perfectly viable and gives you an easy way to the holy trinity of KDB, Bruno & Salah.
