Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

What’s your midfield (with manc options) ?!
Everyone at some point will have to reshuffle for kun I think
But I can’t see how the mids can be ignored

        Auba - Ziyech - Armstrong

Defense is TAA-Doc-Davies-Vinagre so the team is balanced

I've got no issues ignoring the mids for the first 10, I'll reconsider afterwards. The forwards can't be ignored too, the low prices and great fixtures are a gift

Ah well planned. You’ll definitely benefit if they don’t score as many are starting with cheaper forwards I think your differentials could see you with success

GW3 at Leicester is the fixture I'm targeting early, but all four of those fixtures from 3-7 have at least brace potential if he starts.

I think it would be risky with no Salah coverage GW1. Everyone else will be looking to move in Utd and city assets, but if Salah gets a big haul, you’ll have a headache

Are people adapting their usual squad planning approach much in the current circumstances?

I'm very mindful of the amount of players (in the French league recently, for instance) who've tested positive a few days before a game. Definitely leaning towards spreading money around a bit more in my front 8 so I have viable squad players who can cover at short notice rather than fodder.

Probably at least two playing bench options needed, in addition to a team structure that is flexible enough. Need to be able to get four strong mids or TAA+Robertson if needed...

Moving closer to a team now. 1.5 for son to Bruno itb.

Final decisions (for now). I could downgrade Ings to improve defence/5th mid

    A. Ings, stephens, KWP (likely play 442)
    B. DCL, JWP, KWP (352)
    C. Antonio, JWP, Dier (442)

    Ryan
    TAA, vinagre, KWP, Taylor, Mitchel
    Salah, auba, son, soucek, stephens
    Werner, Ings, 4.5

Pieters played out of position on the wing after lockdown because the squad was thin.
One of them will start LB and will be the constant of team performs
It’ll probably be Taylor due to the ages and he’s better on the defensive block then pieters
Can’t tell though. I think pre season they are both playing to cover centre back injuries

I’m starting to listen to some of the more patient managers

Feel this year we’ll need to premium chase and therefore at least a third of the team possibly half needs to be stable

As such pushed some funds back to defence for set n forgets

Big at the back is the way to go for me. Nailed, consistent, high-ceiling, I'd argue captainable with a good fixture. All I'd change is the premium/mid-priced attackers.

The defense should be set and forget until you plan to WC. My target date is GW10 so I've picked a defense of Doherty, Davies, and Vinagre (+TAA). All teams with great fixtures from a defensive POV and should be in the top 5 defenses come the end of the season.

About the premium chasing, definitely possible but not specifically planning for that at the moment. I've got 1 premium midfielder and 3 premium forwards so I'm not missing out there, that's for sure.

      Moving the other way

GW9 looks ideal for WC given Liverpool and City fixture turns. My idea is to leave defence alone till then.

Would I bother switching out a failing 4.5? Nope - low expectations anyway. Might I switch out failing premium defender? Yep - they're a significant part of budget. Psychologically defensive transfers are best avoided on my style by going low not high.

Robbo out to a Spurs 5.0 for me. Happily had Saiss for Doherty last season so I'll be used to being not he wrong one 🙂

Interesting theory, certainly a new perspective

My main problem is Taa, firstly dropped him to robbo then vvd - pools fixtures aren’t great but those big inevitable hauls will make me upgrade for sure

Then you’ve Davies or dier over doh, 1mil goes a long way but doh will get attacking returns that even when spurs concede will fill a hole and make him look much more consistent

Really depends on how consistent the CS are but those defensive attacking returns are gold dust

I know jose wouldn’t do it but his best team has to be
      Lloris
      Sanchez Dier Toby
      Doc Hoijberg Lo Celso Davies
      Ali
      Kane. Son

But I can see him play son on the wing and Doherty in a RB 4-3-3
Where Alli is in that I don’t know

As much as that looks great, Mourinho is a conservative manager, think they will play 4411

        Lloris
        Doherty - Alderweirald - Dier - Davies
        Lamela - Hojbjerg - Winks - Son
        Alli

Mimamino form in preseason has been good. Liverpool look like they may play a 4-2-3-1 formation with Minamino behind Firmino. Is it worth the punt at 6.5? I reckon he will start first game.

How would you prioritize these pieces?

    A) 2nd Liverpool defender (Robbo)
    B) mid-priced Chelsea mid (8-8 5; Pulisic/Havertz)
    C) mid-priced forward (8.5-9; Ings/Jimenez/Martial)

Can only fit in 2 of the 3

C as Liverpool have a couple of harder fixtures after Leeds. I’m waiting for pulisic to be fit and he’ll be in, I have son to do that so will be easy to do and give me .5 back to add elsewhere

I haven’t changed this for a while. Thoughts?

    4-4-2

    Rodak
TAA VVD Doherty plus rotating pair KWP/Lamptey
    Auba Salah Soucek Armstrong
    Vardy Jiménez

Fabri Gordon Vassilev (but hoping for Brewster going on loan)

Probably Auba and Soucek to Bruno and Foden for GW3

Don’t pick rodak, it’s only going to end in tears with Ryan and McCarthy better options. Needs a slightly better midfielder in there but the rest is decent

      1. Ekip

Rodak is a punt on him being Etheridge 2.0 with plenty of save points and a few penalty stops.
Good early fixtures so maybe some clean sheets as a bonus then change on wildcard.
Plus I also have Southampton and Brighton defence

    Ok give this a whirl

    VVD, Doherty, Justin, vinagre
    Salah, Aubameyang, son, ASM
    Werner, Ings
With .5 in the bank to do either Ings>martial or salah> Bruno or maybe both, can’t decide?

Kane is easily a 20+ goals a season striker if he stays fit for 90% of the season. He is the most consistent one out of all.

      Fair dos

I won't be picking him for 38 games so don't care. Last full run he had in a settled side was 2018/19 where in the first 22 matches he scored 122 which was one fewer than Sterling in Sterling's good season. (Auba was also within a point btw).

This isn't ancient history and I could see him getting similar returns. That season no one much liked him - looked awful - but he kept racking up the returns.

Out of interest, what's your reasoning behind this prediction? I've got the exact opposite one

      1. ivantys
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Tbh, it's hard for strikers to get over 200 points as compared to midfielders. Without the extra point for goal and clean sheet, you can't judge strikers based on 200 points. Maybe like 180 points would be fairer. I looked at his past records he barely hit over 200 even when he hit 29 goals.

      2. Eat my goal!

Last two seasons he has achieved reasonable minutes 2500 but hasn’t broken 160 points

His minutes won’t go up - injuries breed injuries

He could be great for a fit period + the fixtures but at the same time you never know when those injuries are going to come so his price has a risk factor

I think vardy will outscore him again, who is cheaper?

Werner obviously has that unknown element factored into his price but with the chances Chelsea create and his history seems much better value too

Then you’ve martial - injury prone but 9 mil inarguably a much more attacking team

        1. Flair
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

That third sentence is exactly why I have him

Great fixtures in the opening 10, Mou second season always starts well so he should do great. Lo Celso and Alli means he will stay further forward than his CDM exploits for the last two seasons, their creativity should help him thrive. I'm not looking at the entire season just yet, but the first 10 make him worth it to me.
