Another start for £4.0m FPL defender Mitchell as Zaha is again deployed as a forward

Having rounded up the Saturday friendlies involving Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Aston Villa in our previous Scout Notes article, we now turn our attention to the games involving Crystal Palace, Burnley, West Bromwich Albion and Brighton and Hove Albion.

As usual, we’ll provide a summary of the key talking points, manager quotes, injury news, minutes played and attacking returns registered as the clock ticks down on Gameweek 1.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Brondby

While the chances of Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) being fit for Gameweek 1 seem to be on the slim side, another budget-freeing route into the Crystal Palace defence has presented itself – at least, for now.

Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m) started his third straight pre-season match in a row on Saturday, again deputising for the injured Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) at left-back.

In truth, the Eagles’ defence almost picks itself at present, with Joel Ward (£4.5m), Scott Dann (£4.5m) and FPL midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) having started all four of their side’s warm-up games at the back.

Ferguson, van Aanholt, Gary Cahill (£4.5m), James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£4.5m) all remain unavailable at the time of writing, leaving the versatile Martin Kelly (£4.5m) as Roy Hodgson’s only real senior alternative in defence.

Jairo Riedewald (£4.5m) and Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) have previously filled in at left-back under Hodgson, with the former indeed starting in that position in the 2-1 win over Oxford United, but it’s perhaps telling that Mitchell has held onto the shirt since then and even more so that he lasted the full 90 minutes in what was Palace’s final warm-up match ahead of Gameweek 1.

One word of warning, however: van Aanholt has been recently pictured doing work on the training ground, so the Netherlands international may not be a million miles away from a return.

The Eagles may have a decimated backline and are often put to the sword against tougher opposition but they are traditionally good bets for clean sheets in clashes with fellow also-rans, having kept ten shut-outs in 20 matches against teams finishing 10th or below last season.

Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) is usually a dependable sort between the posts (he had the third-best expected goals prevented tally last season) and he made a couple of smart stops against Brondby, narrowly failing to keep out the Danish side’s second-half equaliser.

Palace had taken the lead through Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who grabbed his third goal in four games when collecting Jordan Ayew‘s (£6.0m) pass and smashing a deflected effort past Marvin Schwäbe.

Zaha and Ayew were again playing as a strike duo in a 4-4-2, a system Hodgson has turned to frequently in pre-season in the absence of his two bona fide centre-forwards.

With new signing Eberechi Eze (£6.0m) again missing out because of a groin injury, it was Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) and Andros Townsend (£6.0m) who were given the nod to flank Zaha and Ayew in what was at times a fluid front four.

Schlupp caught the eye with his probing runs and a couple of early chances, with the Eagles more threatening than we became accustomed to last season.

Ayew and Max Meyer (£5.0m) also wasted one-on-ones, with another Zaha effort being hooked off the goal-line.

Hodgson said after full-time:

We’ve got to start taking chances. Today I think [we had] 20-odd really good opportunities and, quite frankly, five or six of them were such clear goal chances I can’t believe we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

The back four once again and goalkeeper were really good and I thought our attacking play produced the goal chances we were hoping it would produce.

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Ward, Kouyaté, Dann (Kelly 65′), Mitchell; Schlupp, Riedewald, McArthur (Milivojevic 45′), Townsend; Zaha, Ayew (Meyer 65′).

Burnley 4-1 Heart of Midlothian
Burnley 4-2 Mansfield Town

  • Goals: Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m), Max Thompson, Lewis Richardson, Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) | Josh Brownhill (£5.0m), Chris Wood (£6.5m) x2, Bobby Thomas
  • Assists: Richardson, James Tarkowski (£5.5m), Thompson | McNeil x2

Sean Dyche again split his squad in two for a pair of friendlies on Saturday, with each Burnley XI plundering four goals at their Barnfield Training Centre.

The return from injury of centre-halves James Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Kevin Long (£4.5m) was the main headline from the weekend’s double-header, although Sean Dyche is still without the sidelined Ben Mee (£5.0m), Jack Cork (£5.0m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) – none of whom have featured at all in pre-season.

Dyche provided an update on two of them after Saturday’s game:

Corky is a bit longer term, going well but the whole programme, we knew that was longer.

Barnesy is making real good progress at the minute, he’s had a real tough run of it. He’s not with us yet but he’s working hard with the science team.

Tarkowski, who has racked up five attacking returns in each of the last two seasons, claimed an assist for the Clarets’ second goal in the 4-1 win over Hearts, with youngster Max Thompson tapping in his knockdown from close range.

With Barnes sidelined and Chris Wood (£6.5m) on the other pitch, Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m) tucked away a penalty to give Dyche’s side the lead in that match.

Lewis Richardson netted a third before Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m), who is one to watch in FPL should he stay fit, rounded off the scoring with a sumptuous chip.

In the other game, Josh Browhill (£5.0m) curled in a superb direct free-kick and Wood scored a second-half brace as the Clarets saw off Mansfield 4-2.

Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) put through his own net in that fixture.

Without a fixture in Gameweek 1, Dyche said that the Clarets may indulge in one more pre-season friendly on Friday before the competitive action commences.

Burnley XI v Hearts (4-4-2): Norris; Lowton, Long, Tarkowski, Pieters; Gudmundsson, Westwood, Benson, Rodriguez; Thompson (Mumbongo 65′), Richardson (Elva-Fountaine 73′).

Burnley XI v Mansfield Town (4-4-2): Jensen; Bardsley, Thomas, Dunne, Taylor; Goodridge, Brownhill, Tucker, McNeil; Wood, Vydra.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

The David Button Classic ended goalless at the Amex, with the budget goalkeeper watching on from the bench as his former and current employers drew a blank.

This was a bit of a bore draw on the south coast, with Albion bossing possession without having much penetration in attack – something that was true of the Seagulls for a large chunk of 2019/20.

What good came from Albion stemmed from Yves Bissouma (£4.5m) in the middle of the park, with the Malian midfielder continuing his fine form that saw him become a regular at the back-end of last season.

He may well be the pick of the current crop of £4.5m midfielders in FPL, even accounting for Graham Potter’s unpredictable line-ups.

Bissouma thumped a volley narrowly over in the first half of Saturday’s stalemate and registered Albion’s only shot on target of the game, later producing a superb through-ball that Adam Lallana (£6.5m) couldn’t capitalise on.

The former Liverpool man, along with Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) and lone striker Neal Maupay (£6.5m), did little to impress in attack, with Albion deprived of the services of Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) because of the Belgian’s involvement with his national side.

Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) was also on international duty, with Steven Alzate (£4.5m) the place-holder at right wing-back, but there were further starts for Ben White (£4.5m), Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) and Adam Webster (£4.5m) in what seems to be Potter’s first-choice trio in central defence.

Slaven Bilic was also short on numbers at the weekend, with four players away on international duty, Conor Townsend (£4.5m) and Kenneth Zohore (£5.0m) absent with ankle and calf injuries respectively, and new signings Grady Diangana (£5.5m) and Cedric Kipre (£4.5m) not involved.

The Baggies were mostly reduced to shots from range, although that has never held Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) back before and the Albion talisman twice went close from distance in his 45-minute showing, with one of his efforts deflected onto Mathew Ryan‘s (£4.5m) left-hand post.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-5-1-1): Ryan; Webster, Dunk, White; Alzate (Bernardo 60′), Bissouma, Lallana (Gross 60′), Stephens, March; Mac Allister; Maupay.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-3-3): Johnstone; Furlong (Peltier 74′), Ajayi, Bartley (Hegazi 58′), Gibbs; Harper (Field 58′), Sawyers, Livermore; Pereira (Phillips 45′), Austin (Tulloch 71′), Edwards (Soule 74′).

I may bring him in for Son in the team below (Will allow me Doherty for any one of my defenders, maybe if Vinagre needs to be replaced)

      McCarthy (Nyland)

      TAA Justin Vinagre (Taylor Mitchell)

      Aubameyang Salah Son Alli ASM

      Werner Adams (Brewster)

Considering Son to Zaha and Vinagre/Justin to Doherty

Leaves me 0.5m for a quick Zaha to Greenwood if and when needed.

Wouldn't speak so soon. He was putting up pretty strong xG numbers last season. If he starts converting and getting into the right spaces/with a more creative midfielder behind him, he could easily be worth it in the right situations. Bobby benefits from being a nailed on #9 for a top side. That's worth something.

thought on the below squad? will alternate between 3-5-2 and 4-4-2

    McCarthy / Button

Doherty, B Davies , TAA , Justin, Mitchell

Salah , Auba , Alli, Greenwood , Soucek

    Werner , Adams , Brewster

I like it, I've got Brewster myself but if he doesn't get a loan move then it's going to be difficult to get rid early as his price will be likely to drop. I like the double Spurs defence (although some might say to stay away).

    Is Charlie Austin a possibility?

I get that he’s not great, but if he’s first choice for WBA and on pens, I don’t see much difference between him and Mitrovic? It may be small margins for the PL, but WBA are a better side than Fulham.

Currently Mitrovic is the second most popular striker, in 26.7% of teams. Whereas more people own bench fodder like Origi than Austin (1.3% ownership)

I’d say the first fixture for both is pretty similar in difficulty too (arsenal/leicester). Is there something obvious i’m missing?

      • 9 Years

I always thought he was on the cusp of first choice? I might be wrong but I think Robson-Kanu started a good amount as well. Either way I dont fancy them much in FPL, Mitrovic is a lot better than Austin.

    Ryan Nyland
    TAA | Davies | Vinagre | KWP | Buur
    Salah | Auba | Pereira | Gudmundsson | Reed
    Kane | Martial | Adams

This is probably what I'm going with, any tips appreciated, there are a few differentials chucked in for with good reasoning, not for the sake of it. Mini review below, feedback appreciated:

Ryan - I think with White integrated they'll be more solid this season. He was a key reason Leeds were so solid last season.

Nyland - This is going to be a spot for him or Steer, whoever Villa's starter is.

TAA - Don't want to risk going without him, even though he might not be fit GW1. My strategy is no defensive transfers this season barring injury.

Davies - Love Spurs fixtures and the Jose second season effect. They improved defensively under him.

Vinagre - Marcal seems like a back-up signing, 2 mil and 31 years old, plus he's been predominantly LCB lately. I think Vinagre is safe at least for the short-medium term.

KWP - They became more solid post restart and I like their fixtures, despite his lack of attacking output. Solid 4.5 option.

Buur - Good chance of starting the season at RWB and no signings linked in that position. Going under the radar imo.

Salah - Will become Bruno after GW1, I'm really not convinced by him or Pool at the moment, to the extent that I'm not even captaining him against Leeds

Auba - Captain for the first two gameweeks, if he runs riot I'll keep if not I'll go to Sterling or maybe KDB.

Pereira - For the other 2 starting midfielders I've gone for players that "tick over" rather than explosive options. I think they provide best value; Pereira is the main creator in the WBA attack and with those fixtures will tick along nicely.

Gudmundsson - Missed a lot of last season but has great consistency when fit, actually think he's the best 5.5 option and not too bad a set of fixtures.

    Reed - Nailed fodder.

Kane - Seemed like the Kane of old post restart, looked alright for England the other day too. In as a placeholder while I monitor Werner, I'm not as convinced as most about the German.

Martial - Must-have at his price in my opinion. He had 6G 4A post restart which is a great return. Best Utd option, the focal point.

Adams - Better underlying stats than Ings post restart, coupled with good end of season form and good pre-season form. Also plays slightly more advanced than Ings and has nailed down a place in an attacking team, no brainer.

Yeah agree with this, it's Boly (mainly) that keeps the defense solid. I don't really think Jonny or Doherty are that great defensively

Maybe be the case, but even so, it's odd that I've not heard a single word about him. We get reports about the 4m defenders at Palace, Leeds, Everton, but this guy - not a dickie.

      Solidly reasoned.

      But too many blank GW1s.

Gudmundsson should become someone who has a GW in 1. Saka, Armstrong or ASM are preferred. KWP > Justin improves rotation with your defense. You can rotate Vinagre + Justin perfectly through the first 4 gameweeks and Justin is pretty much nailed on until Pereira returns in October by which point you can WC and or fix the defense.

I feel like Foden is a lose/lose trap.
If he start's against Wolves then everyone is going to get him in resulting in a price hike. The early transfers (for Manc players) are vital so i'm not happy using one on a £6.5m who Pep could easily troll us with the next week by dropping him against Leicester.
If you own him from the start (sits on bench) you risk missing out on points from a similar priced mid (eg Redmond) and need to rely on your bench fodder to score. If you do this and he doesn't start against Wolves then it was all in vein.

You could really say that about most of the city attack but they’ll be the ones to own.

Personally I feel Foden is being slept on. Could end up having similar game time to Raz.

    Hi Guys,

As everyone I am sure is doing, I have been playing with a lot of lineups. It seemed to me, by dropping Salah, (who is on decline and is the joint most expensive player in the game) from my team it came to life. Also with TAA gone (in the short term, till WC) instead of (7.5), (4.5), (4.5), (4.5), (4.0) which = 25m. I can get Dunk, Egan, Doherty, Taylor and Mitchell for 24.5m - and I am guessing that the 3 x 6.0/ 5.0 defenders will offer some attacking returns and outscore TAA and a load of 4.5 that wont come near Dunk or Egans yearly points. Their seems to be a big jump in Value from 4.5 to 5.0.

So what do you think for my side:

    Ryan (Steer)
    Doherty, Egan, Dunk, (Taylor, Mitchell)
    Auba, Son, ASM, Armstrong, (Soucek)
    Kane, Werner, Ings

I got 1.5 ITB for Son to Bruno
Then Auba to KBD in GW3 or even take a hit in GW2

Also have the flexibility to dump Kane to a 4.5 and move 6.0m, (plus the 0.5 from the KDB transfer), to my midfield and upgrade to ASM or Armstrong to a (12.0) if they come into form. But the reason I have Kane is cos of those fixtures, he is bound to score, plus Ings, the bonus of a none Salah side for me. I could drop one of my forwards and upgrade my defence or midfield, but why would I want to? I always go to my defence to scrounge for funds every season.

Going to have a reasonable bench too, with some rotation possibilities.

    Any good?

Why not consider Ings & Dunk => Adams (or even Mitro bcoz not a fan of double SOU attack) & TAA?

Thanks for the feedback. Worth thanking about. TAA will be in my team around GW5, I will shoot the wounded and allocate the funds. The only reason I would want to own an attacker that is under 8.5m is Brewster if he is on loan, or bench fodder. with Adams at 6.0m, i just see 1.5 to put somewhere else and 1.5 upgrading 3 (4.5) defenders is more value than the difference from a 4.5 to a 6.0 attacker

Nah Douglas is 3rd choice behind Dallas and Alioski. Not sure why 16% buy him, maybe it's cos they just copy each other.

He's second choice behind Dallas though sometimes Dallas plays on the right or DM and Alioski starts. He only started less than half of Leeds games last season so I won't pick him. Ayling and Dallas are the first choice wing backs.

He's got 47 goals in total but that's because he was playing as a winger and striker in his previous clubs then now switched to left back at Leeds.

Man City fans, do you think Torres will have a crucial role? He plays CM and RW which are very competitive positions at City, but 7.0 for an attacker of theirs feels criminal. Definitely not starting with him in my team but one I've earmarked as a potntial breakout star. He's gone quite under the radar.

    McCarthy Nyland
    Saliba Taylor Davies Justin Mitchell
    KDB Son Sterling ASM Armstrong
    Aguero Kane Brewster

How's this for GW2 forward? 0.5 ITB, aware the defence is weak but not sure who I'd want to get rid of in Mid or Fwd, Want Kane/Kun as feel they're almost differentials in what seems like a very midfield heavy template.

It’s a structure question primarily rather than about individuals.
There is potentially great value at both price points although I think there is a larger pool amongst the defenders to shuffle around with

Davies dire Egan Lindelof ake shaw Coleman saiss coach hector amn

      Vs

Saint Armstrong Diangana can’t think of too many more at the moment

      Prob doesn't really matter, but....

Many say Steer or Nyland, but even if one gets a game in GW1, they will be behind Romero and Heaton in the pecking order.
Button will be #2 in a rubbish team that won't get many CS, but there is a chance he'd take the #1 spot of the first-choice is out of his depth.
My pick would be the Peacock. He's #2 to Pope, so if anything happened to Pope he'd be a 4m goalie in a team with a strong defence.
