Willian dominates in Aubameyang’s first game as FPL midfielder

FULHAM 0-3 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)
  • Assists: Willian x3 (£8.0m)
  • Bonus: Gabriel x3, Willian x2, Lacazette x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) delivered for his legion of FPL owners with a second-half strike in Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 3-0 win at Fulham.

Despite a quiet first half, the premium midfielder curled home a goal very reminiscent of the strike he netted against Liverpool in the Community Shield last month.

Crucially, it was Aubameyang’s switch in position that made his Gameweek 1 outing satisfactory for his 1.5 million captainers. A combination of a goal and yellow card would have made for just five points last season, but reclassified, it afforded him a total of seven, considering Arsenal kept a clean sheet.

There was some concern over Aubameyang’s positioning in the opening period, which saw him operating rather wide and tracking back a lot. Aubameyang’s defensive duties were a far from ideal development, not just because it initially limited his attacking threat but also because it meant he had to make several “forward’s challenges” on the opposition, earning him a first-half yellow card.

Furthermore, Aubameyang’s opening day goal was severely overshadowed by a surprise monster haul from new signing Willian (£8.0m), who is surely set to become the bandwagon midfielder for Gameweek 2.

The former Chelsea man was not even expected to start at Fulham, having missed most of Arsenal’s pre-season campaign. But he came straight into the side, displacing the in-form Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) and registering a hat-trick of assists. It could have been an even bigger haul for Willian, who hit the post with a free-kick in the 27th minute.

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) was another unexpected starter, at the expense of Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m), and he opened the season’s scoring in scruffy style. The Frenchman tapped home after Marek Rodak (£4.5m) saved an effort from Willian.

“[Lacazette] is in my plans. He is a player that I like a lot. But he has Eddie [Nketiah] on his back, or next to him I would say, he’s gonna push him and whoever is in better shape is going to play. The same for the rest of the team.” – Mikel Arteta

“It was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win and have a clean sheet and respect what the coach wanted. Everyone is happy. He wants us to be perfect. We worked in the week for this kind of game. We have a lot of big ambitions. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it is my job. I am really happy [at Arsenal]. It is only the press and other people that say I am not. I want to play and win titles. We want to be aggressive with and without the ball and improve every aspect of our game.” – Alexandre Lacazette

Willian was again the provider at the beginning of the second half, with centre-half debutant Gabriel (£5.0m) heading home his corner.

And he bagged a hat-trick of assists when Aubameyang converted his cross-field pass in the second half, the premium midfielder cutting inside Denis Odoi and curling home.

“With Willian I knew the performance would come straight away.” – Mikel Arteta

As a result, Fantasy managers are targeting Fulham’s defence for attacking returns moving forward. They face Leeds next, who exploited Liverpool’s well-documented ongoing defensive issues at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Despite impressing with the ball in spells, the Cottagers were suspect in defence at Saturday lunch-time. There was too much space afforded to an unmarked Lacazette for the first goal, Gabriel rose unchallenged in the box for the second and Aubameyang found it too easy to cut inside the right-back for the third.

Michael Hector (£4.5m) denied the FPL midfielder a brace by clearing an Aubameyang shot off the line in the 79th minute, as the Cottagers struggled to keep the scoreline respectable.

Reflecting on a tough opening day for his side, Scott Parker told the BBC:

The big lesson today is to understand the fine margins in this division mean you can get punished. At this level you have to be clinical and make teams pay and on the flip side the first time they get in our box and they score. I didn’t like the second half as much. The second goal was a poor goal. At that moment we have to understand how crucial it is and I felt we were a little bit weak and accepted it. When you are a team like us that has come from the Championship you can’t let defeat after defeat really cripple you. We are going to lose more than we win but as a team you have to keep learning and developing. It has been a quick turnaround for us. We have brought players in that will improve us and hopefully there will be more. We need to get them up to speed quickly. Set plays are vitally important. We looked a little accepting. There is a realism here. Teams that struggle in this league are teams that let things get to them. We may lose two or three on the bounce, the important thing is to not let defeats get to you.” – Scott Parker

Arsenal admittedly almost conceded instantly after an early error from Gabriel, who had not played a competitive match since March. The defender allowed an Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.0m) back-pass to go by him, which nearly saw Aboubakar Kamara (£5.0m) get on the scoresheet but the FPL midfielder was denied by quick reactions from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

However, beyond that, it was a relatively routine clean sheet for the Gunners as Arteta continues to transform them at both ends of the field.

While Gabriel will take plenty of headlines for his goal, Arsenal’s shut-out was, in part, earned in no small part by Rob Holding (£4.5m), who operated on the right-hand side of Arteta’s back three and is looking increasingly comfortable there. On the defender and defensive midfield team-mate Mohamed Elneny (unpriced), the Arsenal manager told BT Sport:

“Elneny is a player who has been excellent in training from day one. He’s a player I know well, having played with him. Rob (Holding) is another one is exactly the sort of player we want at the football club. He had a difficult time but he worked really hard in training. He’s playing really well.” – Mikel Arteta

There remains one slight caveat with Arsenal’s defence moving into Gameweek 2. While they were assured at Craven Cottage, Fulham did not offer very much going forward. It was Kamara who started up front for the hosts as popular FPL asset Aleksansdar Mitrovic (£6.0m) found himself on the bench following a slight injury from international duty.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Bryan, Ream, Hector, Odoi; Reed, Cairney; Cavaleiro, Onomah (De Cordova-Reid 75′), Kebano (Anguissa 63′); Kamara (Mitrovic 63′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, Gabriel, Holding; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka (Ceballos 79′), Elneny, Bellerin; Aubameyang, Lacazette (Nketiah 87′), Willian (Pepe 75′).

I might actually captain Salah again next week. Chelsea's have the same clown car defence as last season, aside from a geriatric Thiago Silva that'll slow them down even further.

You are telling me they were not soft pens first one extremely harsh, last one idiocy from a forward in the box?

If Aumbameyang got pens like that I would be saying the same.
          Really fortunate stuff..
If they are not soft pens I dunno what the world has come to.

Fat Frank had his 'fact' moment during the game after the restart. Had that sore-loser childish strop at the Liverpool bench who all just laughed at him. Then his comments afterwards were all about his regrets if his children had seen or heard it. No apology to Klopp. No class.
What all that equates to in my head is that he will still be seething about it and therefore has already lost to Klopp in the mind game game.
Plus Liverpool are awesome at scoring goals and that Chelsea defence ain't gonna stop them. 4-2 win for Liverpool at the Bridge incoming.

I went no Liverpool at all and captained Aubameyang.

That is one goal and it is not a sudden animosity towards him. That goal was caused by a set piece and he swung at it hit it sweet.
For all the talk of 'underlying stats' Salah's hattrick comprised of one well struck shot after a set piece and two extremely soft pens. 😀

Yeah but the pens were a joke, Worst pens I have seen given away for a long time.
First one harsh. second pure stupidity.
It was not even caused by a great solo run or piece of skill.

              Don’t get this comment.
They were fair penalties and you know he’s the main pen taker so you get that bonus with him.
He’s now scored in all 4 opening fixtures for the club. It’s just rare to get 2 pens in the same game.
So much for his ‘preseason rust’

Mate its going to be a long hard season for you if you keep this energy. Captain pick didn't go your way no big deal. If you are happy with your decision and think Salah captains are wrong why educate them? Results based thinking isn't going to achieve anything.

Did you not look at the manner of the pens?

Some a fella is hacked down blatant, to stop a goal.
Some and given for a harsh handball
Others players look for the pens by waiting for contact to fall over- aka like Michael Owen's tactic
Others are caused by needless pointless clumsiness.

what are you gibbering about? You can break down every piece of action into bad defending if you want. Look how Fulham defended the break for Auba's goal for example.
Doesn't change the fact that Salah was the best cap option and he delivered

Did anyone seriously watch both those games today and think that Auba was still a better option than Salah??? Mind blowing.

Salah was at his selfish best and looking to Mainly dribble until he lost it or scored try still could have had 3-4 fantasy assists on another day.

Auba looked okay but it’s just never as scary not owning/captaining him.

Not sure Bats will change anything - he'll stay central I believe. Ayew goes wide first perhaps. That was preseason story anyway

Ditto on Zaha - simply decided to wait to fixture turn GW5 in the end.

Much more unhappy I ditched Guaita because I needed that 0.5 elsewhere. Far harder to get back in. I% unbelievably

I was also the first on the site to have Mitchell when everyone was on Ferguson. 1% Mitchell was at the time. He'll be fodder soon enough.

Wasn't captaining Salah the upside chasing option? Going for someone with a high ceiling despite the majority going for another option, captaining Auba.

Coming from someone who tried to be ‘clever’ with the captaincy far too much in previous seasons salah was the obvious choice. Plenty of places to take early punts week 1, not having the best player in the game fantasy wise (since he’s been back in the league), playing for the best team in the league, in a week with no utd/city playing against a newly promoted team at home..........hmmm

I don't want to sound like captain hindsight but I did post before the gameweek as well. Salah was by far the captaincy stand out this week. Salah and KDB both returned over 8 points a game at home last season, there is a massive gulf between them and everyone else.

    Some takes after today's games:

    - Some people seem to be downplaying Liverpool, "they struggled against Leeds". I think it's quite the opposite: Leeds is a solid team. Salah looked sharp. TAA will only get better.

    - Elneny is an underrated player.

    - Newcastle will be just fine and Steve Bruce gets undeserved flack.

    - Eyes on Harrison, kid's the real deal.

Good observations. I'm on the same page. Leeds are a solid team for sure, and the Toon are back, finally, with players capable of playing good and effective attacking football. Fraser coming in with Maxi will only improve the threat.

      Mostly agreed

Bruce is slightly underrated but WH were horribly poor. Not sure how that defence will hold up without Dubravka when they get some pressure. Attack looks better but ASM is defo very much work in progress. Interested to see how the style develops.

If you don't have Auba, maybe yes, so you can captain Fernandes.
If you have Auba (and therefore a great C option for Wk 2), you could go either way. Saving a transfer to let the dust settle a bit is not a bad idea. I'm in the latter scenario where I started with Auba (more for GW2 than 1) and I'm strongly considering saving the transfer, even though Salah to Fernandes was the original plan for me too -- especially if Salah blanked (so as not to suffer the price drop). Now I think we have flexibility. Whatever you do, good luck.

Not unexpected at all. First goal was crucial. Palace play less attractive football than Burnley. No desire to keep the ball, think they had 27% possession or something, however, very dangerous on the break especially against our high line. We definitely struggle more against this type of team then we do against teams who will play against us as our high press is obviously far more effective.

I’m still unsure as to why the Scout had Auba captain, following an excellent Captain Sensible article (which made an excellent case for Salah over Auba).

The excellent episode two of FPL Black Box (Az and Mark) also made an open shut case for Salah.

Because lots of 'pundits' made a good case for going Salah less too

Absolutely atrocious. Really showed how variance can portray you as a GOAT when in actual fact you’re just on the right side

Sure it just seems like a strange move to go against the captain sensible article, which was written by a guy who got the second most points from a captain in 2019/20. The Salah pick was also backed up on Black Box by the guy who got the most captain points last season.

Has anyone checked if they all actually captained Auba? Can't be bothered to check myself....

It was a strange decision from the 'experts'. Long may they continue to promote the second best option!

Auba doesn't do as well on the road, and substantially so. I believe people were falling to a recency bias when leaning toward Auba, when it's not even remotely close that Fixtures, statistically, are more important than Form when selecting a Captain. Case in point -- Auba now a better C option in GW2 than Salah IMO, even though Salah was the statistically better option in GW1 (and despite the hat trick today).

Exactly. I’ll be backing Auba gw2.

What’s even more puzzling for me is Tom and Neal (based on price reveals) captaining Salah but choosing Auba as first choice captain in Scout Picks.

On paper it was the move to make. Not sure how many will follow through now though.

Hmm...Man.Utd 1.50 favorites to sign Thiago Alcantara.

Pool do all the bargain and other clubs come and pay like Werner case.
They end up at rival clubs, will be difficult season for Klopp.
