What now for Wolves assets after Soucek and Bowen deliver for West Ham?

West Ham 4-0 Wolves

  • Goals: Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) x2, Sebastien Haller (£6.3m)
  • Own goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.6m)
  • Assists: Pablo Fornals (£6.4m) x2, Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m)
  • Bonus points: Masuaku x3 Bowen x2 Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m) x1

Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) grabbed two goals as David Moyes’ first game as a work-from-home manager went spectacularly well.

The self-isolating West Ham boss watched from afar, while occasionally ringing assistant Stuart Pearce sat in the stands, as his side outplayed a set of Wolves stars who came with most of the Fantasy ownership and left with hardly any points at all.

Phoning in a performance has never been so effective – the Hammers had just 37% of possession, but did so much more with the ball – but from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, it was a disastrous night for the majority of managers.

The five most-owned FPL assets on display all played for Wolves. They scored two points. In total.

A sixth popular player, the 6.2%-owned Daniel Podence (£5.6m), didn’t even make the squad as he failed to shake off a shoulder injury picked up in the Gameweek 2 loss to Manchester City, as coach Nuno Espirito Santo explained pre-match – but not in Friday’s press conference!

“He was not able to recover. He had a knock against City, fell down on the ground. Hopefully it’s not serious.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

That game finished 1-3, but few would have predicted the Wolves backline conceding even more goals to a West Ham outfit with just one to their name across their first two fixtures. Not to mention how solid their defence has been for most of 2020.

That the Hammers did so was down to a superb performance from a well-balanced home team set up in the same formation (3-4-2-1) as the visitors, with lone striker Michail Antonio (£6.4m) putting in a heroic shift which went unrewarded in Fantasy terms.

The 6.2%-owned forward consistently tormented Wolves’ back three, either holding the ball up, beating his marker or drawing a foul, which allowed midfielders Bowen and Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) to run beyond him at pace.

This was certainly the template for the first goal which, based on events at other grounds over the weekend, could probably have done with a bit of VAR.

Antonio was upended by Willy Boly (£5.5m) and what looked like a brilliant advantage played by the referee, Martin Atkinson, allowed Pablo Fornals (£6.4m) to hit a through ball to Bowen, who curled a shot home from the edge of the area.

It turned out that a free-kick had been awarded and Fornals had merely taken it very quickly. Questions were raised: was the free-kick taken from the spot of the foul and was the ball still moving anyway? The answers were ‘not especially’ and ‘yes’, but VAR stayed in its box, the goal stood and West Ham never looked back.

Soucek caught the eye throughout with his brilliantly-timed runs from deep, and the opening goal inspired the budget midfielder to test Wolves keeper Rui Patrício (£5.5m) with a first-time shot from Arthur Masuaku‘s (£4.5m) cross and then a header following dogged work by Antonio.

The striker also forced a save from Patrício, with Fornals blasting the rebound over the bar from just eight yards out.

Such profligacy might have been punished on another day, yet home stopper Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was never really stretched, with Raúl Jiménez (£8.6m) subdued and the team as a whole producing no truly clear-cut chances. A truly rare thing for this Wolves team.

Even so, it was only 1-0 at half-time, but even a muscle injury to Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) just after the break failed to unsettle the Hammers, although Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on the right-back’s fitness situation moving forward.

“Ryan (Fredericks) felt discomfort in his left hamstring while supporting an attack during Sunday’s win and was unable to carry on. He underwent a preliminary examination on Sunday evening before undergoing a scan at hospital on Monday afternoon. The results of that scan confirmed our initial prognosis and he has already begun a programme of rehabilitation. Should everything go to plan, we hope Ryan will be available for selection again after the October international break.” – Richard Collinge, Head of Medical, West Ham

That’s because he was replaced by budget defender Ben Johnson (£4.0m) who, together with fellow wing-back Masuaku, continued to blunt the threat of Adama Traoré (£6.5m), Pedro Neto (£5.5m) and debutant Nelson Semedo (£5.5m) on the flanks, with the trio showing flashes of brilliance without any real cutting edge.

The same could not be said at the other end.

Having scored just once from four great chances in the first half, West Ham buried their opportunities after the break.

Fornals was again the provider for the second goal, after 57 minutes, when his low shot hit the post and Bowen was there to knock in the rebound.

The 15.8%-owned Traoré was hooked not long afterwards, although his two-point haul turned out to be the best of a very bad pack of Wolves scores.

The highly-rated young striker, Fabio Silva (£5.5m), took his place and five minutes later, it was 3-0, with the goal causing more fantasy anguish than joy.

At first glance, it was all very straightforward as Aaron Cresswell‘s (£4.9m) near-post corner was headed home by Soucek, with a deflection off Jimenez.

A few glances later, the strike was deemed to be a Jiménez own goal, downgrading Soucek’s involvement to an assist and handing a big fat zero points to the Mexican striker’s 23.7% ownership.

And just in case anyone was hoping their Wolves defenders might limp off with one measly point from their Sunday night of woe, a goal for substitute Sebastien Haller (£6.3m), who headed home a fine Masuaku cross in time added on, proved to be a manky bit of icing on a wholly unpalatable cake.

Nuno was clear in his post-match analysis, with three ‘bads’ and a ‘didn’t play good’ in just four sentences.

“We played very, very bad. We made mistakes, we didn’t play good and West Ham were better than us. Since the beginning, we were defensively very bad. We were not able to break them and in the second half, very bad.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

West Ham assistant manager Alan Irvine was, understandably, rather more upbeat.

“We were thrilled with the performance and delighted with the result and we’ll probably look back and think maybe we could have got more.” – Alan Irvine

He also handed out some praise to Bowen.

“He’s great to work with on a day-to-day basis and he works on his finishing every day, and I mean every day, and we feel as if he has got a very good future here.” – Alan Irvine

The future for West Ham, at least in the short term, is not so good, however – they’re about to embark on a four-match run involving Leicester, Spurs and Liverpool away and Manchester City at home.

That will surely force most managers to steer clear of their assets for now, despite Sunday’s excellent performance, with their fixtures easing in early November and looking really attractive from Gameweek 12.

As for Wolves, their immediate schedule (FUL, lee, NEW, CRY) offers plenty of chances for redemption, and FPL bosses seem to agree as Jiménez is currently among the most popular players for Gameweek 4 transfers-in, with far fewer getting rid of him or his team-mates.

West Ham United XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Balbuena, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Fredericks (Johnson 49′), Masuaku, Rice, Soucek; Bowen (Noble 88′), Fornals; Antonio (Haller 88′).

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Boly, Coady, Saïss; Semedo (Hoever 73′), Moutinho (Vitinha 73′), Neves, Vinagre; Traore (F Silva 62′), Neto; Jiménez.

Put these options in order of preference:

    1) Rashford and Rodriguez -4

    2) Rodriguez and Havertz

    3) Ings and Havertz -4

    4) Bruno and 6.9mid (Mount, Moura, Trossard, Soucek) -4

      Current Iteration:

      Martinez
      TAA / KWP / Lamptey
      KDB / Mo / Podence / Hamez
      Vardy / DCL / Jimi

      (current bench of Dunne/Mitchel/Bissouma 😐 )

Thanks. Only way would be downgrading TAA or Hamez - both I think are too valuable. And I really want podence for those fixtures — he's looks the real deal and cheap as chips.

    I bought Son at 9.0.

He rose to 9.1, my price stayed at 9.0- fair enough I know he needs to rise twice before I gained anything.

He then dropped back to 9.0, I thought my price would stay here unless he dropped again but my sell price is dropped to 8.9?

    How is that fair?

FPL is a marathon, but you still have to run quick!

Ranked somewhere aroud 100k, I hit the WC because I want to stay ahead. Made 6 changes and on this penal-deluxe team now with a fairly decent bench:

    McCarthy / Button
    TAA / Robbo / Taylor / Justin / Mitchell
    Salah / KDB / Zaha / Klich / Soucek
    Rich / Ings / Maupay

Any small things you would change, let's say in the 4.5/4 defender bracket or keeper?

    1. Limbo
      • 13 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

I don't think the Taylor pick is good RN. would rather have the pace of KWP or Lamptey - CS's being an absolute premium this season, even for more defensive outfits.

      1. bootsmanus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Good shoot, now I want Lamptey. Which means downgrading:

        A) Zaha --> Barnes
        B) Soucek to 4.5
        C) Maupay to Mitro/Bamford

        Probably sacrifice Soucek then, right?

        1. Limbo
          • 13 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

I hate owning Zaha, personally - but he *could* end up being great - maybe Eze will give him some ammo. And as you're not playing Soucek - I think he's a bit of luxury. But then having strong bench this season is definitely a good tactic if you're more of a risk averse manager. Depends on your outlook.

Both of my Picks. I do wonder if McCarthy's run is better tho. It is Villa afterall... Mings / Cash looked pretty good against Mitrovic mind you. But then... Fulham are soooo bad. Southamptons CS against Burley away more of an indicator of quality? (we don't have much to go on so I'm reaching)

          • 10 Years

I have McCarthy myself for the time being (haven’t wildcarded), and while the fixtures are nice.. I keep thinking back to how absolutely rotten they were at the back against Southampton. Villa seem like quite a solid outfit defensively, and Martinez is definitely a better goalie. But there’s probably not an awful lot in it really, overthinking!

Playing the highline was a big risk (as Hulked by Giggs below). Last season I thought McCarthy looked excellent. KWP too. Their big loss is in MF without Høj... time will tell but Saints have a habit of coming good, and Brighton/Villa going the other way.

Cover isn’t a guarantee - see their five goals against city for evidence of that. Vardy looks as good as ever this season, and castagne has been great (but I’d prefer owning double Liverpool defence). So probably one of those two over Barnes, based on what we’ve seen so far

Quite happy. Got 63 with Son my only injury. Ended up using my WC the night before the GW started as I had been taking a -4 to bring in Jesus, although most of my original picks got most of my points (Bruno cap, DCL, Robbo, Havertz). Only downside to an extent was my plan to bring in Vardy next week would obviously have been better this week but nah, thinking like that is silly. Would have preferred to hold my WC for at least a few more weeks but I feel generally happy with my team now. Just trying to figure out how to fit Son back in in a few weeks but I'm sure something will work out.

Wildcarded out Vardy, Ayling, Soucek, Harrison, Wilson, Trent.

Triple Wolves 0 points. Double city attack looked blunt. Podence benched. Son injured. Only success was Robbo getting 10 to save my week somewhat. 35 points, but would have been 65 without the wildcard. Appreciate some have it a lot worse!

      Good: GW finally over

Bad: From disaster GW2 to worst GW ever. 1.5m rank drop in 2 GW's. Total of 9 points from triple City+Son with Sterling (C), 2x0 points from double Wolves. Gave Werner one more chance on WC, instead of going with Ings. WC wasted, team in need of new overhaul. Why am I even playing, seems my judgment getting worse for each season passing

My sister works on a cruise ship, doesn’t get frequent internet, and doesn’t have an interest in football bar her Newcastle fan husband.

She scored 74 points courtesy of a Vardy captaincy, Rashford and Grealish auto sub for Henderson and Almiron.

Rough week after two good weeks previous. Knew it would be a nightmare after having 8 of the Scout Picks haha.

Bruno out for a hit (was so unimpressed with United in GW1 and thought they needed more time to get going). Brought in Son... massive fail.

Only bright sparks were 6s and 7s from the likes of Martinez, Digne, DCL and Trent.

First captain fail of the season with KDB.

The whole season so far has been a rough:

      - 36 points in GW2 - GW rank of 6.0 million (after getting rid of Son from GW 1!)

      - Played my wildcard - Got rid of Rashford, Adams, Soucek.
Got in Saiss, James, J.Rodriguez, KDB, Son (again), Zaha, DCL, Jiminez, and Bamford (who I benched!).

      - 28 points in GW3 - GW rank of 6.3 million.
3 players got 0 points, everyone blanked except 1 goal from DCL, 1 assist from Salah, and 1 bonus point for James.

Now at an overall rank of 4.4 million - my lowest ever??

Go back to last season, GW5 wc, mainly to get in a rampant KDB, in time for his monster haul against Norwich, only to get his benching against Norwich, and for a complete WC fail, total 25 points, and GW rank of over 6.5mill.

Fast forward to this season, again after the Monday display from City and Kdb, I think I need to get him in, and shake up my team.
End result - 30 points, GW rank of 6million - the kick in the death was removing Robbo and TAA from my team on the WC.

Morale of the story, next season I won't be wildcarding to get Kdb in!

Wednesday night: Covid outbreak in West Ham camp and Wolves has some amazing fixtures!

      Result: Vardy > Jimenez (-4)

Friday night: Podence may be injured. Jesus is injured, so Foden surely nailed now!

      Result: Podence > Foden (-4)

      Overall: Auba + Soucek + Vardy > KdB + Foden + Jimenez (-12)

      Rough:

A minus 8 taken to remove Aubameyang, Salah and Wilson for KDB (who I captained), Son and Jimenez.

Son hits the woodwork twice and then gets a hamstring injury at half time meaning I now need to take a hit to remove him. Richie also gets injured in the same match, meaning that when the most outrageous penalty call of the weekend takes place (and there was some competition), Wilson gets the chance to take it (only Newcastle's third shot on target of the entire season). He scores and after the game Brucie announces Wilson is now his appointed penalty taker. Later on on Sunday Jimenez scores an own goal for a 0 pointer. KDB of course blanks whereas Salah gets an assist. at least Aubameyang blanked (the only part of this sorry saga that went well).

So that's 20 points lost without even taking into account captaincy or the fact i need to take another -4 to remove Son.

There's more. Werner and Mitrovic and Burke and Rodriguez blanked. Vinagre worse with a 0 pointer.

I benched Ayling and KWP who got 13 points between them, meaning they scored roughly half of what my final score was (37-8). I was on a net 12 points before TAA and Robertson mitigated the damage slightly with hauls in the final game.

smooth: managed to scrape a draw in a mini league h2h match.

Klopp makes a good point on his decision to play a high line:

"We played a constant high line, how can you defend Aubameyang with a high line constantly? But without a high line, you cannot defend Arsenal."

The benefits they get from playing a high line outweigh the negatives of being more vulnerable on the counter. This is how Bayern won the Champion's League even though they were constantly cut open on the counter. It gave them huge benefit going forwards that made up for the huge vulnerability.

I think I've been a tad too harsh on Hassenhuttl when he insisted on a high line against Spurs. As we saw with Spurs this week, they look a very strong team. Yes a high line makes them vulnerable to counter attacks, but given Southampton's huge success in the latter half of last season, it was plain to see that it also has huge advantages for the Saints too. Many of us were predicting a top half finish for Saints for this very reason. Spurs were just very good and Saints were poor.

But with high lines like Saints and Leeds emerging outside the big money teams, we will hopefully start to see more exciting end-to-end football, and a lot more goals.

I disagree about Hassenhutl and Southampton. Their defenders are extremely slow and their keeper stays very close to the goal line. There is no way you can successfully implement a high line against any team who have a good passer and a fast striker/winger with those defenders.

I agree with your disagreement:). Southampton, from the personel perspective, is completely unprepared to play high line. First and foremost their defenders Bednarek/Stephens/Verstergaard are slow. Secondly, their forwards and mostly midifielders are unable to apply such constant pressure on oposite players to win ball high on the pitch constantly. It works well if you have up front such relentless and competent players such as Mane and Firmino, and if you beat them you must then beat Fabinho, Gigi or Henderson/Keita.Mane is so unbelivable player that he can press almost whole defensive unit by himself.

      Good point this.
Thing is though, whatever way you look at it Hassenhuttel was nasive in not switching things after Spurs scored the second identical goal.
Getting done 4 times with the same thing is unacceptable, even if the logic of the high line make sense for the most part.

You still need to be flexible and adapt imo

Saints' problem against Spurs, as Hass said himself, was not the high line in itself. It was trying to implement it without also pressing hard and fast higher up the pitch.

Nobody can do it like Liverpool (last night was ridiculous), but the high line requires a team effort starting with your front men. If not, you give the opposition time to pick the run in behind and can end up looking very silly.

Can’t play a high line with centre halfs slower than turtles, Soton failed to learn after the first goal, and conceded an additional 3 in the same way. Stupidity to say the least to not adapt mid game and notice that the high line wasn’t working

The other point they keep making on Sky is that VAR enables this - no risk of a marginal call going the wrong way. And Pool started it last season.

Still, you need recovery speed like Robertson/VVD (or Davies at Bayern) and, as said above, a proper keeper. I'd suggest Southampton trying to play like Bayern is a worry.

About a mil (wildcarded). Didn't keep any of the Everton lads who would have boosted it more.

Werner drops are gonna hurt over the next couple of weeks, though.

Probably a mistake as he's getting an absolute boatload of chances put on a plate for him, but I just think he's such a bad player.

Rodriguez, Barnes or Mahrez as a replacement for son?

I'm in the same situation and leaning towards Barnes (I don't have Vardy).

Mahrez if he stays oop, otherwise Barnes!

I went for Barnes based on his stats so far this season. Have a look in the members area for goal threat for mids.

Although if I didn't already have KDB & Foden I would have probably gone for Mahrez.

Interesting comparison on the members tool between KDB and Jimi (looking forward determine Captain).

Opponents aside, they are very close in the key stats. Kev edges it on all except xG from open play (only just).

Interesting is the heat maps. KDB more consistently advanced than Jimi who seems to have been a bit all over the place.

Also ... although Leeds are definitely a better outfit than FUL the xGC stats are very very close.

Summary is it’s not as clear cut as some make out!

Your team looks good. I always feel that unless you feel you have a need to make a change, don't do it. Never know what'll happen during next GW or the international break.

Everyone's team looks good, just not always getting the results we expect. Lucky this week.
I think you are right, I don't NEED to do a transfer, so might just save.
        Cheers

i know they're in very questionable form, but Wolves' short-term fixtures are so exceptional that I see Jiminez as a bit of a must-have.

Werner to Ings this week or go for a 6.5m striker after 2 gameweeks?

Can upgrade James/Saiss to Robbo if I go with the latter.

Is it tenable to go without KdB for the Leeds game? My only real way to get him in would be something like

ASM, Kane -> KdB, Adams [or other fwd in similar price bracket], -4.

I'm not sure that this really stacks up, unless I suppose you see KdB as a set-and-forget/season keeper.

    1. waltzingmatildas

I think KDB is a season keeper, plus Leeds *should* be high scoring. But this season, who knows?!

Wrestling with this dilemma too. Only way to get him in is a wildcard, and I wouldn’t be captaining him anyway (prefer Salah this week), so think I’m going to hold off.

Also I wouldn’t want to lose Kane with his fixtures.

yeah, it's tough. i spent a lot of time fruitlessly looking at Kane's heatmaps, trying to work out how deep he's playing and what this means for future points.

    Morning all!
Already shifted Son out to Barnes last night to avoid the price drop but now the question is this.

    Mitrovic to Ings for -4?

Ings could rise tonight which would price me out the move.
    Help??

Well what a woeful start to the season, all self inflicted, missed Mo's hatty GW1, spread the funds and opted for Puli, Havertz and Alli instead, all been down hill from there. GW3 WC produced 33 points. Currently sitting at 5 million, worst ever start since playing the game. Reckon I'll roll FT this week though, 2 over the IB could be useful. 1.0 itb.

    Martinez (Foster)
    Trent, Saïss, James
    Podence*, Raz, Foden, KDB
    DCL, Jim, Timo
    (Lamptey, Burke, Mitchell)
